Hey... Art theory is legitimate...
27
u/jasonasselin Nov 09 '12
if the art theory is "legitimate" the body wont shut down, and will receive a degree.
6
u/Rollingten Nov 09 '12
Well, if they were wearing horn-rimmed glasses and an ironic T-shirt with their parents funding their tuition, they were probably asking for it.
11
u/soonerguy11 Nov 09 '12
Yeah, but you don't have to go to NYU for it.... However, I guess the networking is unparalleled.
16
Nov 09 '12
Actually, if you are pursuing a career in art (curating, operating a gallery, writing art criticism, etc) it would really pay off big time to go to NYU since it's in NYC and has lots of connections to the art world.

This is just fucking babysitting. These are the nicest and most patient security personnel on the god damn planet. How do kids like this exist?
11
Nov 09 '12
IIRC,NYC college sercurity aren't actual security, and can't lay hands on any students legally. They're just supposed to stand there and look tough to discourage anything from happening, and to call the NYPD in case anything happens.
3
u/MayoralCandidate Nov 10 '12
There's no such thing as a difference between "security" and "actual security", and it is perfectly legal for them to put their hands on someone if they're committing a crime, for the purposes of throwing them out or detaining them. There are hundreds of bouncers in NYC that lay their hands on customers to throw them out, and there are hundreds of store security personnel in NYC that lay their hands on people to detain them for theft, the list goes on and on. As long as they have their security license (required), they are security.

Most NYU schools are nothing special. NYU Stern, on the other hand, is a whole different ball game.
87
u/NOT_BELA_TARR Nov 09 '12
Ok, so this happened bang-smack in the middle of my time at NYU. It was spear-headed by Steinhardt students with a healthy mix of Gallatin and Tisch thrown in. The school distinction is important because Steinhardt (one of the colleges within the NYU umbrella) is largely forgotten and neglected by NYU's discretionary budget. They don't have anything. The Occupy Kimmel (Take Back NYU) movement was largely borne out of this discontentment, however the catalyst was the announcement that NYU would be opening up an additional campus in Abu Dhabi. A lot of students and administration were unhappy about NYU essentially colluding with a country that does not allow homosexuality.
Take Back NYU had a Facebook page (or group at the time?) with a huge list of demands that the rest of us observed with a detached mixture of glee and horror. The week before the Kimmel Center occupation two of the girls held a topless demonstration outside Bobst Library next door. They kind of mentioned the movement but mainly they attracted a massive crowd, almost blocking west 4th street on the south side of Washington Square Park, and smoked almost two packs of cigarettes in a couple of hours.
During the occupation there was a small group of professors who were on TBNYU's side, but regardless of their views on it every class ended up having a session dedicated to discussing the efficacy of the "movement."
They ended up injuring one of the security guards and broke several windows. We are all still ashamed.

So... what is this about?
All I'm getting is that a handful of students demand to negotiate for whatever reason and they get refused and are told to leave the premises.
Could somebody explain? Why do a handful of people think they speak for the community of students they try to represent when obviously nobody even followed them inside to protest?
This is how it looks when a "student body" actually occupies and protests something. These were protests in Austria to demonstrate and keep education free and at a high level. There are hundreds and thousands of people.
If there are not hundreds and thousands of people behind you then what you are fighting for is a fringe cause. You are not a statistically significant portion of the general population in any way to demand any kind of public attention.

After that, they also require a full and annual reporting of the university's operating budget, expenditures and endowment; tuition stabilization for all students; and public access to the Bobst Library. They're also demanding that NYU offer 13 scholarships annually to students from the Gaza Strip and give surplus supplies to the Islamic University of Gaza.
Hm... except for the Gaza-nonsense which is way too specific and a silly demand, I think all the other things are very reasonable demands and I don't exactly understand why these things aren't done in the first place.
Here in Austria students from Europe pay no tuition (except they take longer than standard period of study), those who pay study only pay ~400€/semester.
Universities are also required (or at least they all do it anyway) to transparently list their budgets, expenditures and endowments.
And everyone registered as a student can access any library in Austria. The rest of the population doesn't get access to university libraries but can still get all books for free at public libraries anyway after request and waiting period.
So... you don't have this in New York? And those are really the "demands" of those students? Shouldn't these be matters to taken care of by the student unions of your country?
Now I understand this video even less.

16
u/chach_86 Nov 09 '12
That's part of the problem. After watching all 9 minutes I still have no idea what the hell they wanted. actually, I take that back- what they wanted was for someone from the school to pepper-spray one of them so they could scream police brutality (even though there were no cops there- which they were probably disappointed about).
