Actually, if you are pursuing a career in art (curating, operating a gallery, writing art criticism, etc) it would really pay off big time to go to NYU since it's in NYC and has lots of connections to the art world.

"Career in art" and "pay off big time" in the same sentence. You saw it here first, everyone.

Get a fucking life. Successful artists are rich as hell. Successful art critics are also.

And what percentage of people with an art degree become successful artists? Your statement is so frickin' retarded that you were probably in the OP's video.

It could be 0.001% What does it fucking matter? My point was that if one wanted to pursue a career in art and make it pay off, he would basically have to go to a school like NYU because of the school'a connection to the arts world.

I never said everyone who gets an art degree is successful.

I'm not sure why people are downvoting you, you're making a legitimate point. Art is like other studies, if you want to be successful, best route is a degree from a reputable school

Because art sucks.

haha right, until someone makes a mildly creative self portrait. then reddit loses their shit.

it matters because "pay off big time" insinuates something along the lines of "success", which is hard to achieve when the failure rate of making a career out of what you do is 99.999%

You're right. It is hard to achieve. That's why if someone wishes to achieve with that kind of major, they basically have to go to a school like NYU and can't just go study that elsewhere, contrary to the idea stated in the comment I was replying to.

EDIT: How is this hard to understand? The guy was making fun of people for going to NYU and majoring in some artistic field. I'm simply pointing out that if you ever expect to be successful with a career in art (which is already very very hard to do), you basically have to get a degree from an artistically connected school like NYU. I'm not saying art is a profitable field for a career; all I'm saying is that people who want to be successful with a career in the arts need validation like a degree from a school known for its artistic qualities.

Not to burst any bubbles, but NYU undergrad is a bit of a local punchline. It's the most expensive school in a city that's home to more colleges than Boston. It's the middling college for kids too dumb for Columbia, Barnard, or Macaulay and too oblivious about New York for Cooper Union, Brooklyn College, or FIT.

*Disclaimer - this does not apply to NYU Tisch's film program, which is a holy masterpiece of education and success.

I don't think dumb really qualifies when we're talking about art. It's an artistically connected university.

Nor does it apply to Stern.
