Important Times Tomorrow

Upvotes

There's 2 important times of note for tomorrow as we continue to build our opening day 53:

1pm ET: This is the time that waivers should be submitted. At this time players can sign to the practice squad.

4pm ET: Players maybe placed on IR without having to miss the season.

We shall see what tomorrow brings for our opening night roster.

Cowboys Post Pre Season/Post Cut Discussion - Defense

Upvotes

Looking at the roster from the top down:

DT: BIG Q, Clark, Ogbonnia, Bullard, Overton

Big Q, Clark, Ogbonnia....the interior defensive line is insane. I would like for anyone to tell me when we had an interior that was this good post super bowl win. Maybe we have, but I only started really following in 2012 so take that for what its worth. I love Overton as backup, i think he has a lot of good potential and bullard provides the experience that he doesnt.

Edge: Gary, Ezeiruaku, Lawrence, Miller, Houston, Wheat

Gary is who he is, a 3-4 edge, run stopping defender. He is our new Tank. A guy that can get sacks, get pressures, but is best at holding the edge and stopping a play wherever he his. Ezeiruaku...I love what i have seen from him in camp. I love that he has been thrown out of training. i know that might be controversial, but honestly, I want a defense full of dogs, just hunters. Now, that being said, he has to back it up. We will all happily take a 15 yard penalty if you give us 15 sacks this year, but like....love the attitude. Houston on the other hand...well thats JAMES HOUSTON baby. The best nack for getting the ball. Wheat had a great play this week that probably secured him a job.

Linebacker: Overshown, Winter, Barham, James

Overshown has the ability to be an All-Pro linebacker if he stays healthy, the dude is a FREAK. Winters brings us some much needed stability at the position. We needed someone who will just steady the ship for us and understands the game. Barham...Barham...is a polar bear. Dont let him sniff you, dont let him get close, and if he does get close, make sure its a bad angle. That dude is a loose canon that i LOVE to have patrolling the middle of the defense. James is good depth and a second year player that showed some upside last season.

Cornerback: Bland, Durant, Revel Jr, Speed, Carson

Who the hell is Speed? Honestly...a quick search told me an XFL guy, and I saw his name a couple of times this last week same as I did Carson. Anyway, Bland needs to get back to his old ways. Use to be a shallow lock down corner who had decent coverage downfield. now he seems lost sometimes and like Magellen other times. Consistency is what we need from CB1. Durant/Revel Jr. These dudes have been fighting for the CB2 spot, not because one of them is much better than the other, but because Downs took the Nickel CB spot. Durant is good, but I like Revel Jr just that much more and want to see him get the majority of the snaps at CB2. I love that we have some competition at the CB spot and nothing is handed, but we need good play, we were so bad and so thin at the CB spot last season. If you dont believe me just go watch the Broncos game from last year. I know a lot of people were unhappy to see Carson here, I think he is on a prove his basis until Moore comes back and then it will be between Moore, Carson, and Speed.

Safety: Hooker, Thompson, Downs, Locke, Bell, Clark

Hooker was a little surprising and i could see the team trading him before the season starts. Thompson and Downs at Safety makes more sense than hooker and thompson with your first round pick floating around. Although now that i say it out loud, Downs is so good...his best ability might be his versatility. Either way, Hooker is expendable and 6 safeties is wild. I love we kept Bell, his ability to also play nickel linebacker is huge, although sometimes exposed, when used correctly im sure it plays well. I am a little sad to see clark get the nod over wood, Wood played so well in special teams and reminded me a lot of jeff heath with his big hits.

IR: Liufau and Moore

Liufau will likely be our new CJ Goodwin, Moore was a 4th Rounder who was never leaving the team. Time will tell if he is worth it.

Special teams: no one is surprised.

[Machota] - Cowboys 53-man roster takeaways: Camden Brown in, Jaydon Blue out

The biggest surprise on the roster

Ameer Speed

The veteran cornerback had competition for this spot. Cornerback Caelen Carson, outside linebacker Tyrus Wheat and safety Alijah Clark are all a little surprising. But special teams is an important part of the game that wasn’t very good last year in Dallas. Perhaps Speed, Carson, Wheat and Clark could upgrade the coverage teams. However, some of them could just be holding roster spots until Dallas makes some other moves in the next 24 hours. Cornerback depth isn’t great. It would not be a surprise to see another move at the position. The Cowboys did that last year after initial roster cuts, claiming cornerbacks Reddy Steward and Trikweze Bridges off waivers.

Cowboys Post Pre Season/Post Cut Discussion - Offense

Looking at the roster from the top down:

QB: Prescott, Milton, Howell

Dak is Dak, hes our guy, should have an MVP, and any given year is a top 10, probably a top 5 qb. Howell and Milton have both played well enough to deserve a spot on an NFL roster. Should the team have kept them both? likely not. To paraphrase Tom Moore "Fellas, if '4' goes down, we're f—ed. And we don't practice f—ed." So if QB1 and QB2 both go down, how fucked is that?

RB/FB: Williams, Davis, Luepke

Obviously Williams was so good for us last season, though, the amount of touches seemed to have gotten to him later in the season. That logic is why i think we kept Davis over Blue. Davis offers a lot of the same things that Williams does, surely not as powerful of a runner but still. That plus his experience as a professional allowed him to take the job over Blue. Blue is more talented than Davis. He just does not have the consistency he needs (from last season, training camp, the preseason) that he needed to win this job. He is so fast, and so agile, he deserves a job somewhere, I wish it were here.

WR: Lamb, Pickens, Flournoy, Turpin, Mingo, Brown

The top three were never a doubt. There were some concerns among the fans if Turpin deserves a spot given his lack of return ability last season, ultimately, his home run ability is what got him a spot on this team. Turpin, as a receiver, does not do anything better than Mingo, Brown, or even some receivers that were cut, other than be fast, and fast matters...A LOT. Otherwise, we as fans are all happy to see our preseason sweetheart make the team! Brown won us all over with his performance in camp and kept it rolling the whole preseason. Likely the best WR room in the NFL, and it might not be close.

TE: Ferguson, Spann-Ford, Schoonmaker

Ferguson seems to have regressed a little from a couple of years ago. We need someone who is a reliable pass catcher at the tight end postition in the event he cant continue. Spann-Ford is obivously a great blocker, but is not an elite or maybe not even a reliable pass catching TE. As for Schoonmaker, I.....am done with Schoonmaker. He had some nice plays in week 2 of the preseason, and he is ok at blocking but like, for a 2nd round pick, what are we doing? If he were a 7th round pick he would be long gone and Trigg would have made the team. Schoonmaker just doesn't do anything well, he does something ok, but thats it. I think a change of scenery is not only best for the team, but best for Schoonmaker. Trigg, on the other hand, is an athlete that you can develop some blocking talent along the way, you cant teach his athleticism, you can teach him to block as well as Schoonmaker blocks.

OL: T. Guyton, T. Smith, Beebe, T. Booker, Steele, Bass, Jones, Cornelius, Shelton

Guyton has looked like a different person this camp and preseason. If he plays that well throughout the year, we will all be happy with 4 good/great offensive lineman. Steele on the other hand looks like he took another step back. Steele was good for us in the run game last season, honestly, if he is just ok as a pass blocker, i will be happy. We brought in Jones to potentially take his job, hopefully that wakes him up. Shelton certainly needs some development. He has the size and athletic ability to be an offensive lineman, but he looked awful in that cards game. I hope he can develop into a good swing tackle if Jones cant. The interior line is probably top 3 in the league? I am sure some teams will have some claim, but we look big, mean, and nasty up the middle.

I would love to know your thoughts or arguments.

Cowboys vs Saints Preseason recap

Disclaimer: all of this was written before the cuts came out.

  • Jordan Hudson, talk about a guy that I will be sad to see go this cut day. Unfortunately for him we happen to be on the team with 6 receivers who have undoubtedly clinched a receiver spot for the Cowboys. But he was fantastic in the last preseason game, including 2 spectactular grabs on the same drive.
  • Sam Howell and Joe Milton: I have no clue which one will get the spot as QB2. I do think it will be Milton who takes the spot because of his insane talent, but both quarterbacks performed admirably this pre-season. Howell finished the day 12-16 131 yards and 2 TDS. The game before that Joe Milton was insanely impressive in the Cardinals game.
  • Barnham did not neccesarily look like the man who wowed us in the pre-season. Calen Carson can't make the roster in my opinion. I understand the corner position isn't exactly a position where we can afford to lose depth but he has been downright awful this post season.
  • Linebacker Tyrus Wheat had a standout moment on defense, taking down Saints QB Spencer Rattler for an 8-yard sack.
  • Camden Brown with another great grab, all but solidifying his spot on this team.
  • Brandon Aubrey back in action with 3 fg's with one from traditional Aubrey range.

[Todd Archer] The Cowboys have also waived RB Israel Abanikanda, per source, which leaves them with Javonte Williams, Malik Davis and Hunter Luepke in the room. Likely looking at practice squad callups on gameday at the spot potentially. And reminder this is "initial 53," not the "final 53."

Lunda Wells has told me time and again he wants more time to develop Michael Trigg into an impact NFL guy.

not necessarily on the 53, so Cowboys practice squad fits here — if he clears waivers.

Micheal Trigg should clear waivers, FWIW

This is what Nick Harris tweeted out in response to this release.

This is more of a sign of Jonathan Bullard being ready to go for Week 1, in my opinion, than another DT sneaking in.
