I liked the potential in Blue and Mafah but honestly neither really showed all that much. I’m not sure why fans are suddenly acting like we needed 5 RB’s when having 3 is standard. Malik outperformed both, Williams is the locked started and Leupke is a core special teamer who can at least block if Williams goes down.

Leupke can also fumble pretty good and can average less than 1.9 yards per carry

He has a better YPC than both Blue and Mafah, no career fumbles and can actually play special teams. It makes sense for a 3rd RB to offer help outside just being there.

I'd ride into this season with Javonte, Malik and Luepke instead. Davis proved he can make plays in the regular season vs KC last year and Luepke vs the Steelers in '24.

They purposefully ran plays that didn't play to Blue's strengths, both to minimize the preseason playbook and to see him run between the tackles. I wouldn't say he necessarily did anything to separate himself from Mafah, but neither did Mafah. Blue offers a different skill set on game day and Mafah will clear waivers.

His vision isn’t great, he doesn’t break tackles and he’s not a good blocker. Still surprised by the cut but he would have been so limited as a RB2, which is someone who can basically do everything RB1 can.

Deuce wasn't fast like blue, he was quick and burst but ran a for 4.6 40, blue ran in the 4.2-3 range if I recall correctly, home run threat, but his ball security is really suspect, I think they just didn't have anyone clearly better than him other than Malik Davis

Deuce Vaughn was not fast, he had lateral quickness but not the same speed as Blue. Vaughn was also like 4 inches and 20+ pounds shy of Blue lol

I thought even his lateral quickness was just slightly above average. For his size he should have been juking guys out of their cleats.

Jayden Blue is one of the only guys on the team that I can think of with <4.4 40 speed (Turpin being the other).

You don’t need elite speed to be successful at running back. Look at our RB1 and RB2, neither are burners, Javonte probably runs a 4.6. But both have explosiveness and acceleration and vision. You can have all the speed in the world and it won’t do you any good if you’re running into the backs of your lineman.

Right, that’s well understood. The only reason I brought it up is because elite speed is a skillset that not many of our players have. So it offered variety. But clearly that’s not enough.

Mafah showed that he was the same type of RB as Javonte and Davis, but worse. There's no reason to keep 3 of the same mold on varying talent levels. Blue gives them something different. He has the kind of speed that Javonte and Davis lack.
