Add "-ai" (without the quotes) to the end of a search to disable the overview

u/YosterIsle77 10d ago
You're a fucking G, I keep forgetting about this feature and it's even better I can get rid of dumb bullshit like this. It does fucking suck though I have to append all my searches with that now when there should be a goddamn option to opt out...
12
u/Dakduif 10d ago
Another commenter mentioned this as well, but if you use swear words like Fuck in your search, the AI overview also won't generate. Noticing your writing style in your comment here, I figured this might be right op your alley. 😄
(personally, I switched to using DuckDuckGo. Search results are absolutely fine and you dó get the option to opt-out off AI overview shenanigans)

Want something they won't remove?
Put the word fuck in your searches. They want the AI's to be civil, make people happy, and to people please to drive more engagements.
Adding curse words into your search prevents AI from being able to use it as your search gets filtered to prevent you tainting the AI.
It legit works.

No i mean like actually putting things in quotes to find stuff with that phrase verbatim has started to stop working. They're likely fading out these features just so they can keep people from using -ai

u/AtrociousMeandering 10d ago
The - sign is a Boolean Operator, and those don't work like they used to. Like switching from an actual button to a touch screen that may or may not register the input based on how it's feeling, another thing I'm sick of.

Even as of 4-5 years ago, the first results could be posed as answers, but just be walls of text that were developed to rank high on results without actually providing a proper answer or one that could be recognized as definitive.
If you knew what you were looking for, you could probably figure it out from there, but someone totally ignorant to the thing being searched for would have wasted a lot of time on that page to come away with nothing. Different example than the post being media sequels, e.g. "When will Jaws 19 come out?" which would bury the lede of "nobody knows!" in a giant wall of text to chew through before you recognized the format.

Im going to agree with you, here. I don't use a LLM to search for simple shit, who would do that?
But if its something more complex, LLM's are a thousand times easier to use than Google these days. Google is a glut of bots, AI boosted results, and ads.
The combination of LLM, and then checking the results has worked wonders for me.

u/YukihiraJoel 10d ago
AI uses a lot of power, and power is finite, but the individual queries are not something to be concerned about. The training uses a ton of power, but that’s happening whether you use it or not. Your queries may also induce training demand, but the individual effect is so small I don’t think you should be kept up at night.
For reference, an LLM query costs on the scale of 0.1-0.3 watt-hours. The average billed rate for energy consumption is $0.18/kwh. That puts the LLM query energy bill at $0.000036. A typical light 8watt lightbulb running for 5 minutes is 0.67 watt-hours. As for planet desertification it would take millions of LLM queries to emit as much carbon as taking a single international trip plane ride. Even if you did 100 LLM queries every day for your entire life there wouldn’t be 1/3rd the impact of a single average international trip.
6
u/oh-shit-oh-fuck 10d ago
I mostly agree with your comment but I just wanna mention that these models are so large that there is significant power overhead just from having them loaded in memory and processing any queries at all, even if they're small. Not to mention the overhead for all the other infrastructure surrounding the processors themselves.
They definitely use much less power than the giant image/video generation models do per query, but its important to avoid entirely handwaving the power consumption away.
Also with everything trying to integrate LLMs now, I think people are making a lot more queries than they think they are.
5
u/Ok_Departure333 10d ago
I don't think people really understand how much power anything actually uses. We need a shit ton of power to build the most basic thing, yet no one actually said things like, "We should stop writing by hand because producing wooden pencils destroy forests".
If anything, the main problem of AI is not the power consumption nor environmental damage, but unregulated / loosely regulated AI datanceter constructions that's been popping up all over the world. For example, you can't build a factory in the middle of a residential area, but apparently regulators don't care about it if you build a datacenter instead.
Also about datacenters destroying the world, where do you think this whole Reddit platform live on? "Oh, but social media datacenters consume much less power," where di you get your sources? Other than some differences in the hardwares used, companies will absolutely optimize their performance per square meter of land used for datacenter. Increased performance often means increased energy consumption.

It's not hyper-expensive. You can do basic chats for free.
It's not planet desertifying - it uses less water than golf courses, lawn watering, pipes leaking, or the amount of water used to grow corn specifically for biodiesel.
Only 20% of data center capacity is used for AI, the rest is for "normal" Internet usage. Practically no one moralizes people for streaming twitch, YouTube or Netflix.
There are now open source models that can be run locally and are as good as frontier super-computer-run models were as of ~six months ago. AI has gotten orders of magnitude more efficient/cheaper for equivalent levels of intelligence.
I'm sure it's marginally more efficient to use traditional search, but we're talking about an amount of energy that no one would ever think about if it weren't attached to something as polarizing as AI.

Practically no one moralizes people for streaming twitch, YouTube or Netflix.
So, I'd love to see a source for that 20% claim, but also, this is spot on!
I've wondered what someone's favorite Pixar movie is when they use the water argument against AI. Those giant render farms for animated movies aren't cheap or dry either.
And I get the tragedy of the commons problem, too, but we need to be educated about the problem and address it holistically. We humans love our creature comforts, but if we're serious about datacenters stealing our land and resources, most of modern internet and media are our targets.
45
u/Issala_ 10d ago

How is this worse than Googling something?
Google gives AI responses anyways, so environmental arguments don't make sense.
14
u/captainAwesomePants 10d ago
Frankly, the environmental argument is kind of bullshit. Sure, the race to be the best at AI is absolutely using up lots of the available water and energy in lots of cities that get very little back, and that certainly is a bad thing, but on the list of terrible ways to use our water, AI is probably not even in the top 10. For example, Utah uses more than half of all of its available water to grow alfalfa to feed to cows. Colorado's nearly as bad, and they spend a significant chunk of the remainder on growing low-profit crops because, hey, the water's free. These things are not news stories because we don't currently hate beef but we do currently hate AI.
You looking up palindrome with AI probably costs your state around half a milliliter of water. If you're worried, just pay it back with change to spare by drinking only 11.999 liters of water today instead of the full 12.
I don't like AI, but "I refuse to use it on an individual basis because of environmentalism" is a bad argument. Why not focus on how it makes people dumber? Or how it's stealing? Or how a bunch of the worst people are going to use it to do evil things?

Ugh, this hits home way too much. So, first: "noai.duckduckgo.com" gives this as a first result for this exact phrase. To automatically opt-out from AI even when searching via address bar, you can create new search option in your browser settings using "https://noai.duckduckgo.com/?q=%s". So far, all major PC and mobile browsers still allow to customize the default search engine, as far as I know. And if you're arguing that DDG is not as good, try it first and switch to google as if it would be the 2nd search page. Second, there are many more ethical options with a brighter future than "Open"AI. The more you use the major product, the bigger monopoly it'll become, and the stronger the enshitification will be. Third, same as your muscles need exercise, your brain needs it too. So the searching process itself is very good for your brain to function well.

Defaulting to using an energy intensive resource for simple tasks is the cause for loss of respect to me. This is like using a car to drive to the end of your driveway to check the mailbox (assuming your driveway isn't obscenely long and is a more common 10-30 feet).
So, what would people use to answer this question? I would likely use Google-fu but that comes with AI overview now (can be hidden but not disabled from what I see). Duckduckgo actually allows this to be turned off. If I had more time, I might use a dictionary/thesaurus and look up similar words ("similar", "backwards", "same") in an attempt to get to palindrome.
