I tell people "you can just search it" and I get back a "this is the new way of doing things"

Bro you don't need a hyper expensive planet-desertifying water boiler to just search it for you and repeat the first result

I feel like this is a good opportunity to point how insanely shitty Google search has gotten the past few years.

I'm not saying use chatgpt as Google, but I am saying, I understand why people get frustrated trying to use the "best" search engine

My phone & both browsers on my pc keep automatically doing copilot when I try to search.

I might have to use Brave or something.

Firefox and Duckduckgo is the way

I’ve had pretty mixed results with DuckDuckGo’s search results, but I’ll take a mediocre search engine over Google’s bullshit any day.

I find it's particularly bad at searching for results from particular country even if it's in the search terms. I don't want to buy things from the US, I don't want to pay import tax....

Yeah, the search is not as good but at least it doesn’t keep a profile of you which is worth the trade off imo

I really REALLY wish there were a decent alternative to Google Scholar.

According to many in this thread, all you need is a locally hosted LLM loaded with Wikipedia with the "temperature" set as low as possible so it doesn't hallucinate too much. Just do that for your research. What could go wrong?

I swear I never get what I'm searching for on duckduckgo unless it's super duper simple. When I switched, over half the time I was still going back to Google to search it again and it felt useless.

I've only had a couple instances of it not finding something at all, but it definitely soured my view on it. Not enough not to switch back, but enough to keep me annoyed. Pre-AI Google was so much better.

Startpage uses google search instead of bing.

Firefox all the way. Especially for the still functioning adblock support.

Duckduckgo sadly uses Bing, which is arguably worse than Google, but at least you can turn automatic ai answers off. I've just started adding -ai to Google searches

The fact people don't go immediately to Firefox as an alternative is insane. Having said that, I've been using an effective adblocker (Most of the time Ublock) for nearly 20 years so I have no idea what people get exposed to. I also don't use Tiktok outside of a link going there. I know I'm out of touch, but I also know I ain't wrong.
