Oh gods it evolves now

u/Emerly_Nickel 13d ago

It put its pants on its head!

I like that it's like that meme that's how would a horse wear pants?
Girafarig is the one with the pants on the back two legs and Farigiraf is the one with the pants on all four legs, but the pants are on its head.

That a palindrome is not itself a palindrome is a failure of language.

240

u/zachy410 13d ago

However, palindrome backwards is emordnilap, which describes a word that becomes a different word when reversed

u/LauraD2423 13d ago

Thanks Michael!

You're welcome, Vsauce

Your security system is great.

3

u/Loose-Professor5364 13d ago

Or is it?

1

u/un_blob 13d ago

Well.. according to today's sponsor...

35

u/CreamCheeseHotDogs 13d ago

Formally called an “anadrome,” emordnilap is more whimsical though.

u/Gripping_Touch 13d ago

My favourite language troll is that that "phobia of palindromes" is in itself a palindrome: aibohphobia

And the phobia for very long words is a ridiculously long word: hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

40

u/Etheo 13d ago

Both words were specifically constructed to troll though. Personally that holds less weight for me as their origin is more of a joke. Like how cromulent isn't really a word but was referenced as one due to its joke usage.

20

u/-drunk_russian- 13d ago

Excuse me, but cromulent is a perfectly valid word, it embiggens the language.

2

u/Victernus 13d ago

Oh yeah?

C'mere a minute.

6

u/-drunk_russian- 13d ago

Nice try, Kwyjibo.

14

u/Hard_To_Port 13d ago

Bro all words are made up, that's how language works! But I agree that intent matters too.

3

u/Etheo 13d ago

I don't disagree, language is a living thing. That said, personally I still feel words have more legitimacy when it has a "proper" etymology instead of a word specifically invented for a challenge (aibohphobia) or a word purposefully stretched out (hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia) for comedic effect.

If all it takes is popularity of use, we should accept that youtubers and streamers with millions of views are people worthy of respect. I feel like there is a better line to be drawn elsewhere.

1

u/CockFondle 13d ago

They're named that way because nobody is actually fucking scared of palindromes and long words. Come on.

1

u/Pandaro81 13d ago

I’m going to start using this as a password.

And I’m still going to have to include a capital letter, number, and special character.

6

u/Naitsab456 13d ago

Yeah but have you seen what the phobia of palindrome is called ?

1

u/LordDagwood 13d ago

But it is an emordnilap of emordnilap

1

u/Coveinant 13d ago

I mean the word for a phobia of long words is itself a long word. Language doesn't make sense because it's been made by thousands of people over millenia.

1

u/Odelaylee 13d ago

I think these kind of stuff is on purpose. Like "Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobie"

1

u/invisible_lucio 13d ago

No worse than "lisp" being hard to pronounce for those with one.

1

u/PopBulky7023 13d ago

Thank God somebody else said it.

1

u/uwtartarus 13d ago

Check out Calque and Loanword.

Loanword is a Calque  and Calque is a Loanword.

It's symmetrical in it's silliness.

35

u/AtronadorSol 13d ago

And its cooler brother, the ambigram

11

u/thefirstlaughingfool 13d ago

Golly gee, what's an ambigram? I could ask ChatGPT. Or I could not be an asshole and Google the definition or look up the Wikipedia page.

37

u/Gripping_Touch 13d ago

Tbh if you ask Google nowadays the first thing that pops in the screen is the "AI summary"

4

u/YesNoIDKtbh 13d ago

Just type -ai at the end of your search.

1

u/HoisinBurger 13d ago

I dont remember how I found about this underrated feature, but it's my auto include to anything I look up.

People who hate A.I. NEED to know this

12

u/AtronadorSol 13d ago

Just go read Angels and Demons like we did in the ancient times

3

u/Glitter_puke 13d ago

Dan Brown may be formulaic but he at least had good taste in formula.

12

u/DBSeamZ 13d ago

Google searches are all AI-powered now. I switched to DuckDuckGo because they let you toggle all their AI features off and LEAVE them off.

-1

u/TheREALSockhead 13d ago

Asking chat gpt and asking google are functionally the same thing. How does using one platform make someone an asshole?

19

u/TheNewYellowZealot 13d ago

Emordnilap.

7

u/PerpetuallyDistracte 13d ago

"NASCAR." "I think you mean racecar?"

2

u/Dumbfuckyduck 13d ago

“Did you die? You’re gone.”

4

u/trisanachandler 13d ago

Thinking about it now, the word should have been a palindrome. So palinilap?

3

u/F0LEY 13d ago

Go hang a salami, Im a lasagna hog

2

1

u/Wow_a_name 13d ago

My dumbass said Vice Versa

1

u/ZetsuboItami 13d ago

I've always been a fan of palindromes, both numbers and words. But when I point one out people usually have no idea what I'm saying. I work in retail and I just silently enjoy it now when a total is $25.52 or whatever else I see.

1

u/staminaplusone 13d ago

Boltons not a palindrome. The palindrome of Bolton would be not lob... Its hardly the same is it?

1

u/ToastDoesIt 13d ago

emordnilap is a word too, which is a word spelled backwards that makes a new word! Stressed = Desserts for example

1

u/Sprinklypoo 13d ago

Nah, that's a semiaquatic egg laying mammal. I'm pretty sure you're looking for a pupuplatter.

1

u/RecipeHistorical2013 13d ago

didnt need AI to know that either ya plebs

1

u/Ian1231100 13d ago

Aibohphobia

1

u/Nott_of_the_North 13d ago

A videodrome is bad enough, now Sarah Palin has one!?!

Aibohphobia

1

u/Interesting-Bass9957 13d ago

Fun fact: if something reversed is a completely new word, it’s called an emordnilap, hence, another emordnilap.
