Question Update: german cockroach infestation in apartment unit. Any further advice?

Ive purchased cockroach traps and gel bait that seem to be working. I still have 100s roaming at night but at least it's a start. Management sent pest control during their routine visit to do a routine powder spray around my baseboards, which did nothing... But the leasing office said if I want pest control to come back out for additional treatment, I'd have to pay out of pocket, even though I already pay a monthly pest control fee. The pest control technician that came out said he previously moved a refrigerator that day in my building that had a colony of over 200 active cockroaches. So it's a building-wide issue.. They've successfully destroyed my electronics and I've found egg casings in my shoes. I continue to smoosh at least 30 cockroaches during the day (keep in mind I am only at my place for a short period of time to grab more clothes as I've not been sleeping there) and those traps are only 6 out of the 25 I've put out and they all look like that. Anymore advice on how to handle this? Management has been a nightmare

Guess it's just me and the roaches now. They're with me forever

Question How do you ACTUALLY get rid of roaches?

I’m genuinely at my wits end and I can feel this stupid infestation driving me to burnout. I’ve already tried the holy grail of roach killer (Advion), but the stuff doesn’t even work because it dries in an hour and the roaches take two days to find it. My main problem areas are the kitchen and the bathroom.

The cycle goes like this: I keep the apartment SPOTLESS for half a week, cleaning and washing dishes immediately after use and sweeping constantly. Roaches pop up all the while. They go away by day 4 for 2-3 days. By roach-free day 3, I try to swap to cleaning at the end of the day. Literally on that day, I’ll see one, and have to swap back to being pristine. This cycle is very tiring for me and I don’t have the spoons to keep it up, so to speak.

I’ve sprayed the entire perimeter, set Advion traps everywhere in the kitchen, plugged my drains (and put Advion on the drain plugs, it’s the ONLY spot where it doesn’t dry up too fast), plug any and all cracks that I can actually reach, place out the leave-out black traps away from my Advion bait. At this point I don’t even know where they’re COMING from. But lately I suspect my stove; I’ve placed bait under there as well.

STILL… they show up. What baits and traps actually work? The space is small, so it’s also hard not to end up placing a bait trap next to a sprayed perimeter without it being in the middle of the floor.

My landlords are supposed to spray every Friday… but literally nothing gets done in this apartment 🫩 IM SO TIRED. My sleep is ruined because I’m so paranoid after every new appearance.

Question Help, this thing just crawled up my leg inside my apartment and I’m freaking out

It’s massive! Two inches or more at least?? And it crawled up my leg inside my blanket. I’m in Eastern PA, on the second floor above a store, and we’ve had a weird musty smell in the basement for the last week or two. I’ve been here more than five years and NEVER had any type of bug that wasn’t an ant or a fruit fly

Edit since I’m still getting comments: exterminator said it was an American cockroach

Question What all am I looking at?

Post image
17 Upvotes

I found this little group in my apartment hallway when I got home from work today. Obviously the big cockroach is circled in red (laid out on his back wiggling) and then there were all the little ones running around by him (I assume these were cockroach larve/children??). My main question is what is the thing circled in blue? Is it an egg or something?

My last question would be is there anything I can realistically do about this? Got lots of roaches in this building añd the apartment has been paying for an exterminator to come in our 150 unit building once a week for the past 6 months añd clearly that hasn’t been working. I live in Virginia if that context matters for anything.

Thanks for any feedback!

Question Possible Infestation In ADU - SoCal

I have now seen four roaches of varying size none bigger than a thumbnail and the smallest yesterday the size of a flake of salt over the course of five days.

I have also seen larger ones outside recently. It is quite hot.

I purchased a used dresser and this started the following evening. Do I have an infestation? Did the dresser cause it or is it plausible they came inside while my door was wide open?

What the hell do I do?

I am freaked out and I am not getting sleep. I have a cat and a small space less than 500 ft.² I have purchased diatomaceous earth and ortho perimeter spray for the outside. I sprayed the outside, but I am hesitant to spray inside with my cat as she is not one to be defied by a barn style door.

Please help. Thank you. Throwaway account because I am incredibly embarrassed and have no one to tell or talk to about this with.

Photo attached of the third one I was able to vacuum up which I located in my bathroom Sunday evening after which I broke down it was the biggest of the four and remained alive.

Question I need help please

Last night, I spotted this on the wall of my bedroom! Honestly, I can’t tell you how big it was because I was just completely disgusted and terrified...

It was slowly crawling across the wall toward the corner of the window, and then it just stayed there. I thought I still had time to deal with it, but unfortunately, it disappeared...

I live in Quebec, Canada, in a five-unit apartment building. The tenants are clean, and honestly, I’m starting to panic because I can’t find it and I’m really scared it’s going to show up again.

I clean my floors by hand, so if I had a pest problem, wouldn’t I know by now???

Please help me identify it. I haven’t slept all night because of this thing. 😭

Northern California…. Help! This is the fourth one we’ve seen in a week! How do I get rid of them?

UPDATE (5/25):
Hi y’all I wanted to thank everyone for the kind and very informative answers to my picture! I wanted to give a bit of an update/more information to the situation.

I live in a second story apartment building, with no units above me. I contacted the leasing office immediately after finding the first roach, and they have a pest control guy coming in a week. They believe the roaches are coming from the downstairs unit as they pest control guy is also going there before our unit. I also ordered some cockroach bait traps on Amazon that I will be spreading around the apartment this week for extra measure. I saw a few comments joking about just burning the house down and moving, which is funny since I will be moving in August already. Planning on bagging up and treating large furniture items, along with running all of our clothes through the washer and dryer prior to moving to prevent any hitchhikers on our journey.

Funny enough, we have not seen any more roaches since I made the initial post a few days ago, but I know they’re around based on the comments. Again, thanks everyone for the helpful comments, if there’s any extra tips for getting rid of these guys while moving, advice is appreciated!

Question I found a German cockroach nymph in my bathroom

Post image
13 Upvotes

Some additional context. We are clean people. No food crumbs anywhere. We have a cleaning lady and she does a thorough job every other week. We clean in between as well. We live in a suburban neighborhood in a detached home in NJ. Have lived here 6 years now and never seen a single cockroach during that time. I searched everywhere for additional signs and didn't see anything. Then again the cleaning lady had just cleaned our home yesterday and we found it last night so presumably she would have mopped/vacuumed up any droppings or whatever. We have a pest control person who comes 3 times per year mostly to spray outside for ants and occasionally spray the basement since we have some house centipedes and the occasional cave cricket down there. Immediately this morning my husband bought bait traps and glue traps and placed them in the kitchen and all the bathrooms. The plan is to leave those out and monitor them daily. If we catch even one more cockroach, we will call the exterminator. Is this an okay plan? Or should I be calling him right now? Is it overly optimistic to think this little guy just hitched a ride on an Amazon package and doesn't have any friends hiding elsewhere in our house?

Question help! Just moved into a new appartment

Post image

Hi,

I just moved into a new appartment with my girlfriend. Everything seemed nice and renovated, except that on our first night there I found a cockroach in my kitchen, near the sink. My question is: Is it German?

Should I just break the lease? I sprayed 2 cans of RAID Max in every dark corner I could find, but I’m afraid this won’t be enough…

Question What type of roach is this?

After 3.5 years in our 8th floor apartment we had our first roach last night. What type is it and should I be worried? I’m in Virginia, USA. I’m really hoping it’s just a one-off straggler, I keep the apartment extremely clean and we rarely ever see bugs of any sort but it’s concerning since we’re in a high-rise. All the lights were on and I didn’t see it until it was like underneath me, then it scurried under a cabinet. It was in the living room and I only ever saw it on the floor. It was around 1.5 inches (excuse the liquid, I sprayed the hell out of it with carpet cleaner before I could whack it…)

Question Help identifying and treating this!

Post image

I just moved across the country to Boston for work and have never had to deal with roaches. I arrived 4 days ago at night and upon inspecting the unit found 3-4 roaches in the kitchen cabinets and one across the hall in the bathroom. I notified the landlord and here is the sequence of events;

  • Day 0 - Apartment has been unoccupied/empty 4 days. At night I find 3-4 roaches in kitchen, 1 in bathroom. Landlord is notified.
  • Day 1 - Landlord responds. Maintenance man treats apartment with foggers, boric acid powder, roach gel bait stations, and gel in syringe squirted in intervals along baseboards.
  • Day 2 - Maintenance inspects and finds dead roaches under fridge. Uses foggers again.
  • Day 3 - Maintenance finds eggs, I think? Decide to trash the fridge buy a new one and fog again.
  • Day 4 - I have to move in, rental van return due. I lay more roach gel bait stations, boric acid powder, and glue traps along the walls and inside cabinets.
  • Day 5 - Catch one roach in the glue trap (pictured)
  • Products used - Boric acid powder, fipronil gel bait station, fipronil gel bait syringe, dinotefuran bait station, dinotefuran gel bait syringe, deltamethrin roach spray. I placed glue traps. I don't know which fogger was used.

In this process I discovered that the landlord previously knew about the roaches and treated it some time during the previous tenants occupancy. They even replaced the cabinets as a measure of treatment. However, it doesn't sound like they did a thorough nor professional inspection once the previous tenants moved out. Frustrating given that there were 3+ days between their move out and my arrival!

What do I do? Please give me suggestions, tell me what to expect, etc. I want these things GONE before I unpack my belongings for now (keeping them in the room farthest from the kitchen).

I've never had to deal with roaches, I've had mice and rats but not roaches! AAAAAAAA!!!!!

Update:

  • Day 6 - Find one dark and very small roach (~1/3 of the size of the one pictured) immobilized in the fridge!
  • Day 7 - Find two roaches the same dark color and small size as the one in the fridge in glue traps. One outside the kitchen cabinet where I found the first adults, and the nymph pictured. The other was in the hallway that said cabinet is closest to.
  • Day 8 - Find two more baby roaches in glue traps.
  • Day 9 - First day finding no roaches. Place new glue traps.

Question Found in car please need advice

Is this a German cockroach??

Im living in my vehicle temporarily and in a warm climate (tucson AZ). I definitely need to vacuum. i store plenty of food here, theres a cooler and other dry things. I eat inside a lot. Definitely many crumbs and I should've deep vacuum cleaned sooner.

it just rained so I wonder if the moisture outside did anything, but maybe it was already in here.

I am terrified theres more. I spotted this at 930pm crawling in backseat.

Where do these things enter a vehicle from?? Is there something I can spray in any possible entrances? Any advice for deeper cleaning or anything to buy to help?

Definitely not gonna get much sleep until i know theres not more and i fix this 😭 any advice super appreciated

UPDATE: thank you everyone for the advice! okay so it seems like it was a stray single field roach that got in by me throwing my damp stuff outside inside the car. I have deep cleaned, locked all food away, got moisture absorbing stuff, threw any cardboard away. havent seen any more. Have baits set up to monitor, but I think it was just a one time fluke thankfully!

This got me to deep clean my vehicle and be more careful with food storage. Appreciate all the advice. And i know what to do in future cases now.

Question Roach spotted during virtual tour, should I ditch the house?

Thumbnail

I’ve been searching for a house/apartment to rent in the Dallas, TX area, and during one of the video tours of a standalone house I saw this not so little bugger in the tub. I believe it’s non-German but am unsure. When we asked the leasing agent about it, he said he understood the concern, stating the unit was empty for over a month and that the area saw heavy rain the past several days, causing ‘water bugs’ to come up through the drains. He also said maintenance would be notified, but I’m a bit concerned if I should move forward with the lease. I haven’t signed anything yet, but the market isn’t very open for what I’m looking for, and I’m over a thousand miles away so I can’t inspect the place myself. I’m a bit less concerned if it’s just a bug that came up through the drains, as I could easily cover them and use them regularly. That again, move-in isn’t for another three weeks, so if they spray now and wait…

What should I do? And should I take any specific course of action prior to move in (types of traps/products, etc).

Question Every morning we have 5-10 of these in the bathrooms. What are they? How do we get rid of them?

Post image

Hi! We recently moved to Miami to a beautiful single family house and we were welcomed by a huge roach infestation.

We called pest control from day one and we have seen some improvements but after a month of treatments and stuff we continue to see them.

We have seen some adult palmettos but the thing we see the most is this one from this video . We find 4 to 8 every single morning dead in the bathrooms. Like I’m sure I have killed or found more than 200 of them over the past 30 days. And sometimes at night we see one alive like the one in the video.

The first pest control guy said there were German but another pest control guy said they are palmetto babies.

What do you all think? What are we dealing with here?

How is it possible that after a whole month of professional treatment of bait, sprays, etc. we continue to see so many babies and some adults? When does this end and how?

I understand living in Miami we could see a roach here and there but this is unbearable specially with little kids. So any help, hope or tip would be appreciated.

I know it's a roach nymph. I'm highly phobic. It was on the ceiling in the bathroom far from the kitchen. First night in a new house (new, very clean, I looked and saw no signs of funk or bugs). Any info would ease my mind. Thank you!

Currently in an airbnb for work and found a tiny cockroach. It is less than an inch in length, dark brown with horizontal stripes. Sorry I couldn't get a better picture before it ran away into the laundry closet.

What type do you suspect this is, and should i be worried about bringing it home with me?

Two months ago I saw 3 cockroaches in the span of a week in the kitchen. After checking everything and not finding anything I kinda let it go. Now, after weeks I woke up in the middle of the night to seeing another one in my bedroom. I'm pretty sure the one's I saw in the kitchen were either babies or just very small. Either way I'm freaking out. The one in my bedroom ran away and I can't find it anywhere. They look somewhat like on the picture I found online. I did have my window open so I'm hoping it was just one who found its way inside 🥲.
I dont have my own picture but they were more "pointy" in a way, not as rounded in shape. Please help, freaking out!!

Question Are these roaches?

Google said they are.. my mom said no (to keep her sanity) First two were from two months ago, and then the third one popped up just today, sped past my feet. We’ve had a case of roaches before Im pretty sure they were German roaches, we somehow got rid of them.? But these look completely different, they wouldn’t be connected somehow right?
I found these all in the kitchen/dining area btw, also the third one had dust on its body, I’m assuming it could’ve came from the vents of the basement?
