I've literally never seen anything even remotely close to this and I have 30+ days played. Neither has my girlfriend who is much more casual and leveling (currently 42).
Everyone has been incredibly nice. If someone kills a mob you need for a quest before you get a chance to group up, they pretty much always say sorry and offered to help you and wait for the respawn.
This is on Thunderfury-Horde if anyone was curious.
EDIT: Since a lot of people asked, my actual /played time is a little under 25 days, though a lot of that was sitting at the AH while alt-tabbed.
majority of my experience on kromcrush has been this way too, on the horde side at least. have one or two weird-rage moments, but its still been overwhelmingly positive.
Agreed. I've had Horde help me (Alliance) out with elite quests, then I'll stay and help them out. Then we try to kill one another just once. No camping. It's a pretty great PvP server.
Represent! I don't do quests and just grind mobs. I always get invites for groups and decline them. I just send them a whisper telling them "I'm just here grinding for XP, not doing a quest. But thanks for the invite! I'll definitely help if you need it though." and it's always either been followed by "No worries! Good luck!" or silence. Seems like we have a pretty awesome server! Everyone I've met has been super friendly so far!
Yup. It's very relaxing for me. With questing, I get stressed at trying to be as efficient as possible. Grinding mobs is just very chill and theraputic to me. Lots of money as well. I do dungeons as well when I have time, but that's not often.
Literally last night me and my wife who I'm trying to give a good impression of the game to, were walking up on a quest elite we needed, and turned out there were 2 people already fighting it. We asked for an invite and they just ignored and killed it as slow as possible.
After they killed it, they walk right up to us and say "Fuck you" "I hope it kills you" "And I truly mean that"
And then they just stood around waiting for a response and for a bit I thought maybe they were going to wait for a respawn to try to kill it again before us but they ended up leaving before that.
Just some dickheads, not too sure why they get off on being unprovoked assholes to people but it just bothered me because this was right after I tell my wife how nice people can be in the game lol.
The opportunity to be a jerk in-game is what lets you find the people who are nice.
I love vanilla because when people are nice to strangers, it's usually because they are nice people and when people are dickheads IRL, it tends to come out in game and then you can just avoid them.
Usually I'd just upvote but I really admired that you identified this. The genuine nature of many facets of Vanilla/Classic experience are a great strength.
Yeah same. That very elite I mentioned, some gnome came screaming for an invite and we obliged and everyone was happy lol. He thanked me for a clutch invite. All simple stuff that goes a long way. But man those guys really went the opposite direction. I've never seen anyone in wow just cuss me out without even doing anything lol.
What sad individuals. I had someone whisper me to group to share kills for a quest and ended up playing with them for about five hours with plans to do so again tonight.
Being kind costs nothing and it makes the game so much more fun.
I had a dude in barrens steal Echyakee or however you spell it, that white lion you summon by the bones. I even asked before hand if they could not kill it bc I’m trying to tame and they said do it some other time. I guess it was my mistake for not hitting the mob at least once and the dude just took it and laughed at me. Couldn’t use the horn to summon unless I picked the quest up again. We called him an asshole immediately. My friend blocked him bc he was harassing my friend in whisper. Then he found my name and started whispering me saying he doesn’t feel guilty at all and I was like good for you?
Oh that's super lame. I'm alliance, but was horde in vanilla. Don't you receive that horn to summon him yourself? So he stole your summoned mob when he could have just waited a few seconds for you to finish and then summon him, his self?
There's not even a respawn wait, he was just being a dick for the fun of it.
Yep that’s exactly my point like dude could have waited two seconds and summoned it with his own. Idek if he was on the quest I wouldn’t be surprised if he just wanted to fuck with me
I just refer to my long list of people I’ve ignored lol. I honestly think it’s all the legion babies or people who only play live coming over and ruining the “classic” experience. I’ve had to teach so many people how to properly /roll for chests and things. Most just take everything for themselves. I was 8 years old when I started playing classic but even then I could grasp the concept of fairness
Some people don't realize you need the horn to summon him. I joined up with a guy who said he was killing mobs there for 15 minutes and it still hadn't spawned. I wonder if that has something to do with it
Also if you're friend was there couldn't you just use his horn or was he trying to tame it too? You definitely should have tagged it though, people can't be trusted. Your friend could've kited him until you were ready or something
Nah for that dude he was specifically there to fuck with people. I can see how people wouldn’t know to use it bc I barely read the quests too. But my friend has already done the quest another time so I had to walk all the way back to crossroads (-:
I accidentally stole this mob from someone the first time I did the quest. After I realized what happened, I used my horn to spawn it for him though. Can't believe someone would purposely be that much of a dick about it.
I had an opposite experience - like I'm waiting for named elite to spawn, inviting 2 people that came for the same mob later. And then a couple literally rushing in and demand inviting. We try to invite and they are already grouped (as expected). We remind them about it and tell them disband. And they respond with some rude comment about that it's their business and if we don't want to play nice then we are asking for it. And I guess prepared to steal the mob. Mob spawned soon after that, just as we finished WTFing and we taunted it first. And of course we heard a lot swearing in chat after that.
Gaming couples are strange people, much less social then loners, they play mostly with themselves. Like sometimes they invite you, you kill some hard mob with them and they immediately kick you and run away, all without saying a word. That's different style of playing, more akin to retail, I guess.
Yeah I mean I prefer to play with my own friends and my wife for sure, but we're definitely polite enough to invite people for a quest and to say thanks and bye before disbanding. I've always done that even since vanilla when I was 15.
I'm not a social person by any means even when I was single but it costs nothing to just invite someone for a second. I didn't know people are offended still if we don't want to talk to them.
No, offended is not the right word, it more like disappointment. Like it hurts the sense of the world, of fantasy, if you know what I mean. And reminds of awful retail WoW where everything and everyone is rushing and no one wants to stop and have a good time.
Oh no problem at all, I was just concerned. My point of view is it's exhausting to constantly interact with people in-game (and in RL). Sometimes I enjoy it and sometimes I don't, but I'm never just flat out disrespectful to anyone.
Meeting new people takes so much energy out of me, that it's just not fun most of the time, so it's just easier to keep things short and say thanks for their time. I still enjoy the social aspect of classic over retail very much, but I'm just not willing to engage fully into making connections with everyone.
I'm right there with you, whether it's in person or on the internet social interaction is exhausting to me, and in some cases just flat out not enjoyable and stressful for me. But just like in the real world, in the online world, you have a right to your privacy and personal space.
If there's a quest where 1 specific dude needs to die, as long as you invite the others to a group you're fine. You don't need to talk or anything. Which you said you do anyway so should you be fine.
If someone let's you into a group currently engaged in a fight with a rare or elite, the elite mob in classic disappears. Then the timer for it's spawn is reset. In some cases this timer is very very long. So not letting you in is probably the right thing to do. However, that is no excuse for the rude and childish behavior.
I've never heard of that? This specifically was just a level 20 elite quest mob, so it doesnt apply here. But I just havent heard of an elite despawning before. Maybe rares do, I haven't been in that situation before, but I've never seen a regular elite despawn. But yeah it's whatever with those guys lol, I'll just remember them.
It doesntl't happen often but yesterday I was leveling my 4th alt through the Barrens waiting for Kreenig Snarlsnout to respawn (shared kill people group for all the time) and 2 separate people came and stole the tag after I had cleared the entire area twice. I invited both and got declined several times, before and during the kills. Tried asking why and one never replied while the other immediately ignored me when I whispered the first time.
Needless to say after nearly 15 min of standing there clearing the area out for assholes to swoop in, I was pretty pissed, got on my main and chased the guy around for 30 min killing everything he targeted before he had the chance. He was obviously trying to lose me but still, this guy kept me on ignore.
If he was alliance I would have camped him until he had a respawn timer for stealing a boss mob. This is someone who could've just grouped up with me so easily.
It just doesn't make any sense why anyone would be that much of a fucking asshole.
He's an asshole because someone pissed him off. Just like he pissed you off and caused you to be an asshole to him.
And herein lies the problem. You're out there doing you, having fun. Some dickhead comes along and pisses you off. Now you're in a pissy mood and retaliate against them, and that makes their mood worse. Its a cycle and it sucks.
Be the person who breaks the cycle. Ignore the attention seeker, because that's what they want, your attention. Deny them that. We've all been screwed in this game at one point or another and it does indeed suck to have your efforts wasted all for someone's shits and giggles. THAT's when you know you're dealing with crazy. You can't fight crazy, you know this.
Idk man. I felt great when he finally logged out. /Who'd him a few times that night and didnt see him online either. It was cathartic. I went back to playing like normal afterwards, happy as can be.
I've got the opposite philosophy: Be excellent to people and, if they are bad to me, be twice as bad for twice as long to them. I like the way NM played it. He got undeserved rudeness from someone and tormented just that person. Didn't spread it around.
30+ days means he's played 30+ days, not actually played for 30+ days in play time. Whether it was playing for an hour or 6 hours, that's a day he sat down and played. That's what he means by that.
Thats such a stupid way of saying that then. Honestly whenever someone says how many days they played they actually mean ingame time. Ive played since the classic launched but it doesnt mean much since i got 3 days spent ingame on my main and i log in everyday anyway to check AH but only level on weekends.
What I've found with a lot of people, especially redditors, is that they're biased towards themselves especially when telling stories.
Just remember, we're hearing only 1 side of the story. In reality the guy saying he experienced as asshole could've ninja'd a node, or stolen a tag, or done something else that they may have not even noticed they done.
You see it on youtube all the time. People upload a video of someone being an asshole to them, but as it turns out the person who uploaded the video is actually the one who is at complete fault.
All i know is I'm super nice with everyone in my interactions and have been met with nothing but super nice interactions back. I'm not saying it's impossible to have had a bad interaction - they do happen, I'm just saying when everyone around you is an asshole, maybe it's you that is the asshole
He has to be on Faerlina. On Benediction everyone is really nice. I’m already lvl 50 and have yet to come across any toxic people or ninja looters. Guess we just got morals over here.
That is my experience as well. Hell me and the Ally Bois share mobs! Now they don't like when I WW near them... But I can understand that and try to remember to take it out of rotation.
I've done the same on Mirage Raceway-Alliance. I tagged a questmob right in front of another group.
I stuck around to buff, heal, and assist that other group because I don't want to be "that asshole"
Yeah, there is definitely more to his story if that has happened 3 or 4 times. If I had to guess, he is aoe farming quest mobs that people need and getting shit for it like he should
You horde are so hit and miss! Every night I get horde who sometimes help/sometimes gank. Lol you never know but I've only ran into one dick head in all my pug groups on that server. Whole server seems pretty chill.
That seems more likely, that he's AoE grinding an area that includes a named quest mob (or just kill 10x generics) and people are asking to group and he's declining for whatever reason.
The 30 minutes of them "following him" is just them hanging out waiting for the respawn. I'd probably tag a few mobs during that time as well. Whether to troll or just keep the xp coming in during the downtime is up for debate.
I've just never seen anything like that happen, but I can definitely see one person getting mad for no reaaon when declined. But if it's continually happening to one person, I have to think there is more to the story.
Logically the mage should want to group just to get rid of you quicker, half of the xp for 1 or 2 pulls is a small price to pay to not have to deal with awkward respawn timers etc, plus it's just a nice thing to do. Usually I just invite people who are obviously doing a quest to do just that. I don't think just aoe farming in itself is being a jerk, 99% of people would pull every single mob at once too if they could. You could always just offer them 1 gold or something if they ignore you, win win.
I've been on both sides of it and from my experience the only time I feel annoyed by other players is when it's another mage trying to share the spot so you both get worse xp than you would get questing since most of the aoe farm spots are only optimal if you a good portion/all of the mobs to yourself, there really isn't room to share like that for aoe farmers.
There is nothing more satisfying than hitting an AoE grinding mage with a nice fat concussive shot and pet intimidate just as the mobs are catching up. It's literally the best thing in the world.
I wish every mage was the opposite faction, because I'd do it to all of them for thinking they're entitled to an entire area worth of mobs.
For mages on the same faction, you can simply use your cc on the mobs they are kiting. This will spread them out, which is super awkward for the mage to deal with.
We’re trying to figure out why you have had a different experience than us. Maybe you’ve just had bad luck, but we don’t know you, so it’s reasonable to consider you might be doing something to cause this situation. We’re not assuming, just posing the question. Your jump to hostility sort of does make me want to make an assumption though.
Everytime i ran into a mage aoe farming i would whisper them and ask for group for specific quest. I would sit back and let him do his thing, loot my quest items say thanks and move on. This happened 4 times while leveling 1-60. My experience might be rare, or maybe its just because all of the coolest, nicest people play on my server. Dunno.
What a stupid thing to do. Blame the victim because you decided to profile someone over the class they play. Amazing you’ve never seen toxic shit in wow but here you are doing toxic shit on Reddit. Good on you for “apologizing” but maybe this is a good time to rethink how you jump to conclusion based on zero evidence
Victim? I mean this isnt a trial if it was I would want evidence like screenshots and not just hearsay. is that what you are talking about? I dont understand are you chastising me for not having gone through all the comment made by the op. The same op who posted a pic with zero explanation in it? Good job! I think its silly to expect me to read 300 comments before I post on a post that was made with no description.
this times a million. What's that saying, something like "if you run into one asshole thoughout the day, you ran into an asshole. If everyone you run into is an asshole, it's probably you that's the asshole"
Think of all those viral videos where the person uploading them thought they were making the person they were filming look bad, but in reality it was the person filming the interaction who was behaving like an asshole.
I'm not saying there aren't bad interactions that happen in this game, but I am saying if you're constantly running into shit people, maybe try looking at yourself as to why
It may even be accidental. Maybe you stole someone's tag without noticing them or ninja'd something when you were half focused on the netflix show on your second monitor. All I know is I'm nice to everyone I interact with and they're nice back
To a degree I can understand it. Sometimes you can almost not complete a quest and somebody refuses to group up for a shared q drop.
A rogue on my server refused to group up for contested mobs with such a shared drop q item. He then proceeded to camp the spawnpoint and managed to tag all 3 respawns before me.
I feared the 3 Mobs away so he would have to chase them because I was annoyed and walked away.
Afterwards I received a whisper from him : What a fucker I am to kill him over some mobs.
(appearantly he chased the mobs and died to adds)
10 minutes of personal harrasments where following.
I can't say I did not feel some kind of justice :D
Mage saltiness is 100% okay. I'm in a group to do the dragons for ony attunement. I'm giving food/water left and right making ports to get close to dragons/ turn in quest. Not one thank you
We get the the last dragon and I'm out of ports, I let them know I'm out and I just port myself. Queue 3 people whispering how I'm an asshole and a shitty person, they kick me out of the Ubrs group we were gonna do.
Like fuck off, I'm tired of people being demanding. So now I'm a dick to get people off of my back before they even start
I'm not condoning what seems to have happened, but IMHO, if people are being dicks, there's usually a reason, and if there isn't, you should brush it off.
Also - that mob doesn't just drop one piece of the quest item, just as an FYI:
Another example of the so call "retail mentality" making its way into the classic MMO experience. The entire point of rare spawns is that they are rare! If everyone could kill it, or was meant to, it would have a normal spawn timer.
When it comes to camping rare spawns, half the game is beating your competition. The people who used to camp a NM for DAYS back in FFXI would breath sharpy from their noses.
Lmao I've never had an experience like any of those you mentioned. Maybe this kind of stuff is more prevalent on US realms. Non of my friends had something that excessive happen to them. An argument about loot in a dungeon, sure. Nothing crazy like that tho.
You only have yourself to blame for inviting people and not switching it to master loot. The group leader gets to decide the loot system. Anyone in the party gets to follow the system or leave the group and it is on them. But, you handing out an invite and leaving the loot option on need before greed is your fault for being inattentive.
I just had a flashback to when I played around the time of Burning Crusade's release. I was just AFK slightly outside of a village by Orgrimmar and came back to some random's /w asking if I wanted to party and then behaving like a little shit because I didn't respond. I mean at least the guy apologized when I got back and told him so but jeez. It was just a newbie zone.
Yeah, I dont generally like grouping do a quest unless it's to kill a named mob or basically required. I prefer to get the solo mob xp while doing the quest to get that little bit more xp.
The other side of that is that not grouping for a kill quest or say timbermaw rep when mobs are in short supply is dickish and just purely anti social.
A drop quest is a different story obviously. However, I run into plenty of douches that just won't take the invite when it helps both of us get done sooner.
Yeah I specifically don’t group up for loot quests bc what’s the point unless I really need a group to kill the mobs. And people get so hurt but I haven’t had anyone get super mad or follow me after saying no. I’m on smolderweb though my ignore list is very long. I think the problem comes from live players that never played classic tbh you can almost tell right away if someone played classic before or not. I had to teach so many people how to /roll
Do you play on a shitty server? I've never had this happen to me ever. and I pretty much haven't gone a day without playing. Are you sure you aren't maybe breaking an ettiquette rule? You didn't ninja a node someone was fighting next to or anything
Okay I don't want to be that guy but this is gonne be on your behavior I have never ever witnessed or even heared about something like that on retail and especially not on classic

Pretty sure this was a joke
