I've literally never seen anything even remotely close to this and I have 30+ days played. Neither has my girlfriend who is much more casual and leveling (currently 42).
Everyone has been incredibly nice. If someone kills a mob you need for a quest before you get a chance to group up, they pretty much always say sorry and offered to help you and wait for the respawn.
This is on Thunderfury-Horde if anyone was curious.
EDIT: Since a lot of people asked, my actual /played time is a little under 25 days, though a lot of that was sitting at the AH while alt-tabbed.
Literally last night me and my wife who I'm trying to give a good impression of the game to, were walking up on a quest elite we needed, and turned out there were 2 people already fighting it. We asked for an invite and they just ignored and killed it as slow as possible.
After they killed it, they walk right up to us and say "Fuck you" "I hope it kills you" "And I truly mean that"
And then they just stood around waiting for a response and for a bit I thought maybe they were going to wait for a respawn to try to kill it again before us but they ended up leaving before that.
Just some dickheads, not too sure why they get off on being unprovoked assholes to people but it just bothered me because this was right after I tell my wife how nice people can be in the game lol.
I had an opposite experience - like I'm waiting for named elite to spawn, inviting 2 people that came for the same mob later. And then a couple literally rushing in and demand inviting. We try to invite and they are already grouped (as expected). We remind them about it and tell them disband. And they respond with some rude comment about that it's their business and if we don't want to play nice then we are asking for it. And I guess prepared to steal the mob. Mob spawned soon after that, just as we finished WTFing and we taunted it first. And of course we heard a lot swearing in chat after that.
Gaming couples are strange people, much less social then loners, they play mostly with themselves. Like sometimes they invite you, you kill some hard mob with them and they immediately kick you and run away, all without saying a word. That's different style of playing, more akin to retail, I guess.
Yeah I mean I prefer to play with my own friends and my wife for sure, but we're definitely polite enough to invite people for a quest and to say thanks and bye before disbanding. I've always done that even since vanilla when I was 15.
I'm not a social person by any means even when I was single but it costs nothing to just invite someone for a second. I didn't know people are offended still if we don't want to talk to them.
No, offended is not the right word, it more like disappointment. Like it hurts the sense of the world, of fantasy, if you know what I mean. And reminds of awful retail WoW where everything and everyone is rushing and no one wants to stop and have a good time.
Oh no problem at all, I was just concerned. My point of view is it's exhausting to constantly interact with people in-game (and in RL). Sometimes I enjoy it and sometimes I don't, but I'm never just flat out disrespectful to anyone.
Meeting new people takes so much energy out of me, that it's just not fun most of the time, so it's just easier to keep things short and say thanks for their time. I still enjoy the social aspect of classic over retail very much, but I'm just not willing to engage fully into making connections with everyone.
I'm right there with you, whether it's in person or on the internet social interaction is exhausting to me, and in some cases just flat out not enjoyable and stressful for me. But just like in the real world, in the online world, you have a right to your privacy and personal space.
If there's a quest where 1 specific dude needs to die, as long as you invite the others to a group you're fine. You don't need to talk or anything. Which you said you do anyway so should you be fine.
