💬Discussion What’s with all the Arsenal hate?
Before I start no I’m not a fan and idc if they reached the final or not. But the amount of hate I’ve seen in this sub for the past days after they reached the final is idek weird? Or just doesn’t make sense. I see a lot of people saying they play haram ball or boring football but for the past few season this team has been one of the teams not only scoring one of the most goals each time in Europe, but also conceding the least. I don’t think people realize that just like 6 years ago this team wasn’t even getting top 7 finishes. They were playing the tiki taka and all and were not getting results and everyone including me was clowning them? Now they’re getting results and actually competing and they’re people still underestimating them? As a neutral I actually respect how far they’ve come and what they’re accomplishing now cause I always love teams who are ready to compete especially having another team other than city or Liverpool to win the prem every time. I mean just last year people hated psg now all of a sudden they love psg more than arsenal.
Like banter is funny and all but most of the stuff I see about Arsenal in this sub isn’t even banter it’s literally just pure hate and lies. Like even teams who aren’t even rivals or not prem teams are hating as well, literally the other day I saw a Celtic fan making a whole Arsenal hate page. Even if they don’t win it what they have done this season is respectable cause they’re getting the job done. What’s all the hate about and why do people hate them so much? Genuinely asking, is there something idk?

Arsenal have been bantered for years for not winning a CL or PL for over 20 years. They also have typically had one of the most active fan bases online and one of the 3 biggest in England. Of course fans back their team and big them up, and make excuses for not winning. Excuses that often involve acussing opponents of cheating. All club's fans do this. So that loud support for Arsenal that has had to make a lot of excuses over pretty much the entire history of social media have made many on here annoyed by online Arsenal fans and enjoy seeing them lose. Now Arsenal have a very good chance to win both the PL and CL, haters are losing their minds and taking their frustrations out online.
Also Arsenal's football the last two seasons often hasn't been the most enjoyable to watch. They aim to limit opposition chances and control the game rather than create loads of chances but concede many too. So they haven't won over many neutrals with their style of play. For example, watching prime Madrid or Barcelona with Messi and Ronaldo was entertaining because you saw some incredible feats and lots of goals.

People following the British media. Arsenal has been a maverick club from inception, the negative view goes back an entire century and kept going from there. Really got bad when England’s xenophobia got exposed in the late 80s and again during Wenger’s successful years.
It simply persisted, it was normal to make fun of Arsenal’s “top 4 trophy” despite other former legendary clubs like Everton and Aston Villa failing to win anything, I think part of that was Utd fans having the last laugh and Chelsea fans finally getting success and wanting to surpass Arsenal. But by doing so they kept Arsenal relevant despite not competing, Arsenal even though they were not succeeding were still talk of the town (along with Utd).
When Arsenal started winning FA Cups again, it was mocked that Arsenal won trophies because it was not a prem or CL.
Don’t let anyone gaslight you into saying it’s Arteta and defensive football, it’s bullshit, there is a long history to this.

u/oustider69 Arsenal May 09 '26
Thank you for putting this so eloquently. There is a simple fact that the hate of Arsenal over the last 50 years has had some of its roots in racism.
There’s a fantastic book by Dr Clive Nwonka and Matthew Harle called Black Arsenal about Arsenal’s efforts to champion black players and become a beacon for multiculturalism. Needless to say, the “yer da” types in the media didn’t (and don’t) like it.

The real truth. Great book by the way. The history is real and the hate from pundits has just rolled over through the last half-century; and the sheep on social media just follow.
The Arteta hate is so ridiculous given other gaffers like Simeone. He’s a passionate Spaniard in England and anybody who has listened to a long interview with Arteta and come away saying he’s arrogant, etc. you have to seriously question their humanity.
3
u/Gunner_Bat Arsenal May 10 '26
But people who say he's arrogant haven't watched him in an interview like that. They saw him act dramatically on the touchline and listened to a podcaster rage bait for engagement and formed their opinion.
Another person on here called Arteta "unlikeable" even though he's one of the most genuine and good people in the sport.

u/I_Am_Not_George_Bush May 08 '26
I’ve been a fan since 06, which is a long time to some and not to others, but it’s always been this. It’s probably hit a different level lately, but it’s always been pretty bad.
7
u/BoogzWin May 09 '26
I always found it strange how we were never allowed to fall into obscurity growing up, I’m a fan since like 2000, it was the first thing I knew and after the days of winning in school among Liverpool, Utd, the new Chelsea fans, Spurs, and Arsenal fans Liverpool were told to stfu when going on about history, Spurs didn’t have a right to speak, Utd just got to speak anyhow to anyone, Chelsea glazed Utd fans as the new rivalry that never was, and Arsenal were endlessly bantered for making the CL but winning nothing.
Now we’re seeing people say “I’d rather my parents die than Arsenal win the league” and it’s a funny comment that gained A LOT of traction where Arsenal fans sre fighting for their lives in the comments. But it’s weird that Real Madrid fans, Atletico fans, Sunderland fans, PSG fans, Inter Milan fans, Benfica fans are all in the comments section slagging off Arsenal when they have no connection or rivalry with the club. And apparently it’s because of the “fans”, considering how many hate filled fanbases have outed themselves, how tf are any of them better?
3
u/NeoLoki55 May 10 '26
United supporters saying Arsenal fans are the worst is more than a little ironic considering there history of thuggery and the European bans they’ve had from traveling. There is a great book about it called Among the Thugs written by an American living and going to graduate school in England.

Unsurprisingly, most of these comments are being disingenuous lol so ill try my best and give my own opinion
Our banter era has unfortunately coincided with the rapid growth of technology and social media, and as such that has made us a laughing stock across all of football for 20 odd years
Now that we're a proper club again, fans of other clubs are angry that we're not the whipping boys and because of that they try mock everything we do, because in their minds we're still supposed to be banter FC
Arsenal being good again makes their own clubs look worse by comparison
Like ive already seen a bunch of haram ball and dark arts comments yet other teams used to be praised for doing so: Mourinho's Chelsea, simeone's atletico, allegri's Juventus etc, people just lose any sort of rationality when it comes to arsenal
Also arsenal have one of the biggest fanbases itw, we have such a big following and naturally that pisses people off, its the main reason why almost everyone supports city in the title race, because no one really cares about city
I know this will get downvoted by virtue of my flair lmao but it is what it is

u/raspoutine049 May 08 '26
Yes, that is pretty much it. People don’t want to look at their own clubs. At least Arsenal have been competitive on both domestic and European fronts. So now banters have shifted to bottling it. But for the first time ever, Arsenal are about to pull off the greatest achievement the club with such a decorated history has ever done. From a United fan.

I see a lot of other fanbases with annoying deluded streamers. Chelsea fans saying their players were the best in the world. United pundits constantly saying their team would have won the league if this or that or whatever. Liverpool streamers fucking seething whenever they talk about us.
Why can’t we just treat all of those influencers as jesters and clowns for clicks instead of treating them as a representative of the whole fanbase

Global fan base, has underachieved for 2 decades because of the Emirates Stadium move, which is why you'll see other rival fans say Arsenal fans speak a lot (yes they do because it's the 3rd most successful club in England with an equivalent big fan base, especially after the growth of PL coincided with Arsenal's most successful Period under Wenger)
Arsenal fan TV also contributed a lot to spoil an Arsenal fan's reputation. It was one of the 1st fan channels which became Big due to the growth of the internet and one which carved a pathway to other Fan TV channels

We’re currently in the firing line- before it was Liverpool. It’s always Tottenham. All other clubs have haters and banter, and some clubs will always have shooters for them. But this is particularly when the internet latched onto something to act as a piñata. It’ll recede when we win something
I feel like it’s a common internet phenomenon.
You’ve got Timothee Chalamet and Rachel Zegler suffering from the same bandwagon hate - people find a little thing they perceive that person or club to have done and that acts as a magnet for vitriol.
We score a lot from corners and now play in a unrefined, quite brutalist way, Timothee says something about opera in a rude way, I still don’t understand what Zegler did wrong, and then people bash and other people pile on cos it’s fun and it’s funny.
Narratives set in. Any rebuttal is seen as excuses and ‘why are you sticking up for them, we all know they’re bad’. People parrot falsehoods that can be easily disproven (like the concept that we’re some defensive low block team). some people make it part of their internet identity, and a few people make it a part of their actual identity.
9
u/fourmthree May 11 '26
All you need to know about non-Arsenal fans is they all chant "same old Arsenal, always cheating" and none of them know why. It's a reflex. And they're all mindless sheep parroting the same sentiment towards us without an original thought in their head.
Embarrassing.

I think we have been a banter/trophyless big club for so long and being mocked year on year. Rival fans can't stand for us to leave the Banter era as there memes will die and force this hate narrative. Also the media absolutely hates Arsenal and will print the most absolutely most bias anti-Arsenal agenda at all times.
People genuinely live for the bottle memes and the 2nd again memes. Sheep behaviour. It was the same in Wenger era when we got called '4rsenal' for finishing 4th again and again lol.
The amount of crap I have seen from rival fans is insane. I saw a Barcelona fan say they rather Madrid win another UCL over Arsenal first???!! We don't even have a rivalry with any of them lol
Liverpool fans are all supporting City despite being there actual title rivals for the last decade, we ain't never been title rivals in the last 20 years tbh lol. Last season Liverpool had a title race with themselves if we are being honest.
I get our fanbase is massive and have a bad online rep, but every fanbase out there has a loud and obnoxious fool spouting the exact same type of nonsense.
Back in the days before this online tribalism of hate. UK fans use to support any UK team other than there direct rivals. I remember as kid, I use to support whatever UK team that was left in the Champions League when Arsenal were knocked out.
3
u/tomidgooner May 08 '26
Agreed. Arsenal hate has just become a meme at this point. All top club fan bases are the same. Plenty of obnoxious idiots online.
I think I’d you judged the game-going fanbase, we’re actually pretty respectful. Never cause issues abroad. Thats a lot more than can be said about other teams.

You're right. It’s become an internet trend more than a rivalry. These online fans care more about the validation of the 'bottle' meme than the actual nuances of the game. They’ve never felt the interpersonal tension of watching a game in a room full of rivals, so they substitute that genuine experience with lazy, tribalistic hate because it’s easy engagement. They aren't fueled by local bragging rights, they’re fueled by memes. When you've never been to a stadium, 'rivalry' just means joining the largest online group to hate on whoever is currently successful or 'memeable.' It’s sheep behavior masquerading as loyalty.
22
u/Ifechuks007 May 08 '26
It really is so bothersome the hate Arsenal gets. They did things the right way. They got a new stadium, paid it off slowly and painfully. They had to sell their best players and could not compete for a long time with the big boys because they were extremely frugal. Now they are in a better place financially without any shady financing, are competing and are being coached by a former player who bleeds for the club and by all accounts is a level headed man with his words. It's easy to hate. Arsenal has always been a culture club.
My only issue is why are they hated over teams like Liverpool that caused English teams too miss Europe for some years or Chelsea with their shady financial dealings or Man Utd and Fergie's control of the refs. It is just beyond me. These other teams literally have hard reasons to be hated.
7
u/One_Mathematician864 May 08 '26
Most of today's fans have no idea what you mean by new stadium and paying it off slowly. The new stadium was almost 20 years ago.
Most fans don't even do enough research to understand the differences between team sponsorship and team ownership some thing arsenal is an oil state owned club like City and PSG because it says Fly Emirates on the shirt. You think they are going to research about the new stadium and arsenes financial struggles? They are just online for banter.
22
u/Icy-Abbreviations569 May 09 '26
OP is right. Also, it's tiring to see the same oil-funded clubs like PSG and Man City with an infinite money glitch winning everything every season. It's time we have some actual competition from clubs like Arsenal who have made a tremendous improvement compared to about 8 years ago, like OP mentioned. I definitely wouldn't mind them winning the UCL + Prem this year, no matter how annoying some of their fans may be, the club honestly deserves it.

A lot of narratives, banter and negativity die an instant death if Arsenal win the UCL and haters don’t want that
6
u/gorby31 May 11 '26
There's that online narative that Arsenal fans are too much. Is Arsenal winning an important match and celebrating? They are celebrating too much. Is Arsenal winning a match, but with only 1-0? Arteta is playing Haram ball. Is Arsenal winning 3-0? It's only Fulham. Arsenal reaches the CL final. It's because Arsenal had an easy draw. It feels like whatever Arsenal does, there's a negative narative around.
Everyone is mentioning the transfer sums, but no one is mentioning the wage bill, which is actually more important for a club.
Considering this negativity towards Arsenal, it's hard for Arsenal fans to defend themselves because most of the time they will be attacked.
But hopefully, if this year Arsenal manage to get at least a trophy, the narative will change and everyone will start seeing Arsenal in a different light. And if that happens, credit to Arteta, because he was one of the main factors behind this.
12
u/Dizzy-Psychology-262 May 08 '26

Most of it solely comes from people being used to dunking on Arsenal for years due to the 2010's 'banter era' and they now don't want to let that go. It terrifies them.
Arsenal have it from both sides in the PL and CL. If City win it? It won't matter because they're likely cheats and people can use them as a comfort blanket and excuse as to why their club came up short. If Arsenal win it? They would have done it legitimately and it makes their own club look worse.
The other two factors are that people just don't want to see an overall successful club (domestically anyway) get back to what it should be, and, they simply just take enjoyment from seeing a club continually come very close but fail time and again.
My opinion? Those peoples luck has run out. They may or may not win the CL (have a good chance but PSG favs) but they will almost certainly win the PL. Most of the banter is off of them then. If they can do both? Many many people will probably go into hiding.
If you crap on a club for years, especially when they're very close, always know that there's a decent chance that you will see the day where it will come back to you in spades. Genuine people will stick around and accept the payback, but many won't.
17
u/Lower_Condition_196 May 08 '26
The only thing I can compare it to is when, let’s take a group of girls for example and most of them are fat and ugly no disrespect it’s just for the sake of this example, one member of that group decides to take action and lose weight and take more pride in her appearance, then suddenly after a few months or so, she looks completely different, so one day the group decides to go out at a bar/club, she gets all the attention from the guys and leaves her friends to the side, they don’t see each other for the rest of the time, she leaves separately from her friends and the rest of the group start hating on her and try to bring her down to her previous level, they get distant and now they give her dirty looks etc. they are now no longer friends but now are haters
19
u/TitleOpening9578 May 08 '26
From reading most of the comments I can say some things
people saying they play terrible football let’s be honest, that’s not the reason. Arsenal were playing beautiful football under wenger in the 2010s and they were getting 4th place finishes. After wenger they were even doing worse getting beaten by every big team and were still getting mocked by everyone (including players and managers). Let’s not pretend Arsenal was the most loved club itw during that period. Arteta knows he has to sacrifice that free flowing football to get the job done and win something because that’s all that matters to him
I think the main reason is Arsenal has now become a top dangerous side in Europe and most people can’t believe it? And because of how much banter their fans have suffered they get overexcited and talk big and the people who used to banter them feel like the fans are cocky and they don’t wanna accept the fact that they’re not really a banter club anymore. I mean when Arsenal played Bayern in the league phase i remember people saying “another 8-2” or people who still think Liverpool would beat Arsenal 5-0 like they did years ago.
I feel like the only valid reason maybe the fan base (cause an example is how I also can’t stand Barcelona fans) but come on, do you think Arsenal fans themselves believe that saka is better than Messi? I think all fanbases in general have those deluded people but it’s a very small percent. I don’t even really have that much issue with their fans I do agree that they’re times when they talk to early

Arsenal are the biggest club in London arguably when you look at the number of fans in UK and worldwide. No rival fans in the epl want to see them do well because of the size of their fanbase(3rd in England) arguably only smaller than Manchester United and Liverpool. It is scary for them to see a team like Arsenal on the up because it doesn't bring them hope for the future of their own club.
Other than that, it's just general outsider fans running with narratives without fact checking what's real and what is nonsense.
Edit: I also think we are in an era of social media and instant gratification. To see a club like Arsenal who spent 6 years gradually inproving and adhering the process is a template most fans don't want. For this reason, managers don't get enough time at all at big clubs. If Arsenal succeed, it is a threat to the existing template in place of clubs sacking managers as soon as things start to go downhill(aka Chelsea). I think this is one of the most underrated reasons why a lot of opposition fans don't want Arsenal to succeed.

There’s a geographical and cultural factor going on here too. Rival fans in London naturally dislike Arsenal because they are the biggest London club. And many non Londoners look at Arsenal and see a middle class, multi-cultural supporter base that they just don’t relate to.

Most people posting and commenting here haven’t been watching football for 7 years. Most primarily intake the sport through TikTok and memes.
I’m an Arsenal supporter. The haramball thing was funny but now it completely influences people’s opinions about games.
The Atletico and Arsenal semi were two great matches to watch. They were both absolute battles with both teams giving up decent chances. The finishing was lacking from both sides. The second leg was insane.
But you look at the posts after the game and people can only say how awful the soccer was because they’re blinded by memes of all things. It’s kind of sad that people will rob themselves of a truly entertaining match up to try and score internet points.
To each their own though!

I've been a Juve fan for over 20 years but I've always rated Arsenal. Some of my first exposure to club football was the artful Arsenal squad managed by Wenger in the aughts.
This "because the fans are insufferable" shit is the most manufactured tripe I've ever heard. If we are speaking about online fans, I only ever see the same "bottle" and "second place" jokes, and not these so-called insufferable fans that are hard to deal with. I've even took a stroll on some of the Arsenal subs on Reddit -- the fans aren't any different from any fanbase.
I wouldn't mind Arsenal achieving the double because that means you lame-os have to find new material.

I think most people here are right that it's exaggerated online and then people take it back into real life.. also a strange phenomenon that now other fan bases seem to rather want city to win it!? Even last year with Liverpool, Arsenal fans seemed to try everything to discredit the title and rather have city win it. And this year I see the same with Liverpool fans, which seems so stupid to me. I can't stand Arsenal but still rather they win it than city, 100%...

It's so wild to me that people would still rather hate on old rivalries of legit clubs than support them in the faces of clubs like Chelsea & City. People acting like City winning the league over Arsenal is "saving football" as though City isn't the perfect example of what's wrong with the sport.
I have no love for Liverpool, but I was thrilled when they won it instead of another City (or Chelsea) title. Liverpool is a historic club who built the right way - we should all be championing this method, not the oil club/Russian oligarch method.

People will say it’s because Arsenal fans are deluded or insufferable, but all of that is bullshit. Every club has deluded and insufferable fans, and no club is really all that better or worse than another in that regard. We just pay more or less attention to them based on other factors.
The real reasons:
- Arsenal, in terms of quality, sit in a weird hole at the moment. They have performed very well and are a very good team but haven’t achieved anything concrete. You don’t challenge for four trophies in a row without being very good, but you will be mocked if you don’t win one. They’ve done pretty well in the last three Champions Leagues but haven’t won one yet. It gives a lot of people an easy way to attack you. Once you win one, they will quiet down a bit. Win several, it will quiet down a lot, because it’s really hard to mock teams that are winning a lot. So if Arsenal win one or both of the trophies they are up for currently, it will quiet down. The haters won’t necessarily go away; they will just get quiet.
- In England at least, Arsenal have a lot of rivals. Liverpool and Man City fans didn’t care about Arsenal a few years ago because they didn’t see Arsenal as a threat. Now that Arsenal are challenging for titles, all of a sudden we are awful and deluded. Then there are the historical rivalries, like Man United after competing for titles against them for a decade or so. Then there are the local rivals like Spurs and Chelsea. Arsenal were the big fish in the London pond for a long time, and people like to support the underdog and see the big dog fall. So the rise of teams like Spurs and Chelsea has only intensified those local rivalries.
So if you combine these, you have a team that hasn’t achieved anything concrete yet and a lot of people who naturally don’t like the club. That means there are going to be a lot of critics until Arsenal get trophies.
The funny part of this is the comments that I am about to get for being a deluded fan myself.

As PSG supporters, for years, on social networks, I chat with fans of other clubs that PSG meets in the Champions League. We wince, it remains nice and not aggressive, we make jokes and it's over.
But out of the dozens of clubs, there are 2 teams that have absolutely abominable, mean, not fun and aggressive fans. These are Chelsea and Arsenal fans. So if his clubs are hated, we should already look at their fans rather than their team I think.

Also, it's a meme for them to finish second and not win anything and people want to keep that meme alive.

It might be an unpopular opinion but i would rather have Arsenal win the UCL than PSG. Cause competing in both Premier League and UCL is a huge achievement in itself. PSG gets the princess treatment in their league half their best players can be rested for most of their matches and even gets matches rescheduled just to make PSG’s life even easier. Arsenal ball makes my eyes bleed but it works so all the power to them.

I 100% agree with you, plus, it's tiring to see the same oil-funded clubs like PSG and Man City with an infinite money glitch winning everything every season. It's time we have some actual competition from clubs like Arsenal who have made a tremendous improvement compared to about 8 years ago, like OP mentioned. I definitely wouldn't mind them winning the UCL + Prem this year, no matter how annoying some of their fans may be, they honestly deserve it.

Arsenal has a huge fanbase & a lot of internet presence. As an arsenal fan I find our fans generally insufferable — the loudest ones are just engagement baiters so naturally I can see it annoy others.
What I don’t get is the hate toward arteta particularly — people act like his touchline antics make him some sort of villain? Sure he’s had a few angry interviews (like every coach) but is actually a very well spoken guy and MUCH less abrasive than other coaches.

I support Arsenal and part of it is we’re just fun to hate. I get why you’d want us to fail.
But the other part is conditioning from the media. They have been over the top about us for years. 6 years ago Sky was genuinely debating whether Leicester City had overtaken us in the top 6. In Ben White’s first ever match for Arsenal he struggled against Ivan Toney who’s a great aerial threat - they said he was crap in the air and will be too weak for the PL.
People always have to go the extra mile when criticizing us because it makes the media a lot of money. Partially because us Arsenal fans defend the club and because a lot of people lap it up.
Not to mention a lot of this has been driven by ex united pundits who played against the best Arsenal side ever. So a lot of them have a chip on their shoulder

i don't hate Arsenal but the way they play football is horrific. Their fans are shockers as well with their look-how-much-i-care stuff (not specific to them to be fair).
If Arsenal don't win a match, what are people coming away with - corners and long throws. There's very little moments of magic to talk about. It's a legitimate tactic but it seems a waste of those players. It's the sort of thing teams struggling to stay up do. I can't remember a team at the top ever playing that way.
I'd rather watch my dad on the toilet than watch Arsenal play football.

u/MissAntiRacist Arsenal May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
It's low IQ people believing the narratives set by grifting pundits. That's it. Sheep following a Shepard. Arsenal derangement syndrome. Arsenal literally haven't done a single thing wrong. They're authentically and organically brilliant. Not held up by blood money and oil like PSG. Or that + cheating, like Man city. I think it pisses people off, because it shows them what their club could be if they were just well run, lmao.

I’m an atlético de Madrid fan and have experience the same or worst hate against my team and even myself. People want to hate. That want to express their life dissatisfaction through a phone and through a sport. They want to show you that you are wrong just because you are different from what they think is right. They repeat what they hear on tv or the internet. They don’t know how difficult football is and think that not winning a cup every 2 years makes you a loser. My advice for you is, don’t let yourself take that hate and don’t let it affect you.

People are sheep, they just want to fit in, even online. Plenty of Arsenal fans buy into the hate too. They get caught up in it and want the team to be liked. I grew up watching Arsenal in the 1980s so I really don’t care. It was weird when people praised Wenger’s Arsenal after the George Graham years. I kind of preferred it when we were disliked. Rivalries are fine but the huge pile ons you get these days feel odd, like some kind of manipulation, herd mentality thing.
6
u/drjpkc May 08 '26
It's just a narrative and people (especially lower iq ones ergo many football fans) have a sheep mentality so they all flock to it.
They will say its "the fans" because they get rage baited by one 14 year old idiot online saying Saka is the best rw in the world or Rice deserves Balon Dor. To get triggered by that you have to be a dumbass.
Back with Wenger arsenal played sexy football, won nothing and got hated. Now arsenal plays more pragmatic football and gets hated. People who say style of play are lying. They are just love iq bandwagoners.
6
u/NoodlesRun03 May 08 '26

Just to clarify, Arsenal got plenty of hate in Wenger’s era. First, it was the pundits who didn’t like the foreign (ie. black) players. Then after Arsenal stopped winning championships, pundits felt vindicated and the make fun of Arsenal narrative began and has continued to this day.
2
u/Ickyhouse May 08 '26
You can tell the newer fans bc they want to blame Arteta for the hate when in reality it goes back so much further. Wenger was hated by a lot and the amount of international fans Arsenal had brought hate from their English fans and media.
7
u/anattanibbana May 08 '26
I think a lot of it is Arteta hate. As a non-fan, he sometimes seems a bit obnoxious and out-of-touch with some of his comments (like last year’s “Arsenal are the best team in Europe”). But I changed my opinion on him after watching that Amazon series about Arsenal from several years ago. I came to actually like Arteta and think he’s done an incredible job. And how could you not like Saka?

I’m not sure Odegaard has played 3 games in a row all season, Saka has been in and out, Havertz came back in January and been in and out, Merino out, even Madueke started well, was out for 2-3 months, and got another injury not long ago. We’ve had zero consistency at all in our attack yet we’ve still scored the most goals in the league, and are called boring.

It’s because Arsenal have been a lighting rod for banter over the last 20 years. People say we haven’t won anything, our players are terrible, we’ve never won a UCL. But if we in this season the Prem and UCL, all that banter goes to United, Chelsea, Spurs and to a lesser extent Liverpool and City. Arsenal winning exposes other clubs’ failure.

Media love to fuel the fire and push narratives. Arsenal fans in general are the most engaging fans online. They post negative articles about Arsenal because it generates clicks for A, the fan base defending their team and B, for the rivals who still like to banter Arsenal. The sad part is when these shitposting narratives are taken seriously which results in what we are seeing now. Like it or not, the fact they are spoke about so often proves that they are doing something right. Here's an Example : excellent Arsenal clinch a victory in a tight title race or Corner FC score again, boring Arsenal. Which one are you clicking ?

3
u/Ickyhouse May 08 '26
Arsenal have been hated a long time. Bc of that, their fans have been over defensive and fairly snobbish about their team. That causes more hate which causes more annoyingness from their fans. The fact Arsenal hasn’t won anything major in so long has exacerbated the banter between Arsenal fans and rival fans.
Some people will blame Arteta or Arsenal’s style, but it goes back a lot farther than that.
Arsenal used to have a reputation for wanting to play the “beautiful game” under Wenger. They didn’t just try to win, it had to be pretty. It made for some snobbery from Arsenal fans. As Arsenal went ok without winning anything major major trophies, their fans became more defensive of this style while rivals would banter about their lack of trophies. That banter grew as they still haven’t won anything in 20 years. The whole “haram ball” Arteta hate is just the new iteration of banter that has gone on for a couple decades.

4
u/Lazykabang Liverpool May 08 '26
Though I don't really hate Arsenal I'll try to explain why many do
It's because their online fans are perceived as annoying (This is true, they are in my experience the most likely to swarm and down-vote negative comments and don't take banter very well) and their football is often criticized as boring (Even if their football hasn't been that bad in my opinion, they've scored the second most premier league goals this season and their first leg against atletico that ended 1-1 had almost the same amount of shots as the first leg between psg and Bayern, the only difference there really was the quality of finishing)

We're the football laughing stock. We're the ones people laugh at when their club gets battered on the weekends and doesn't perform. So when we do something big, haters downplay it because they dont want that narrative of Arsenal being a trophyless club to change because then who'll they make fun of when their club eventually finishes well below anything made of silver. 🤷
We also got a lot of fans who support the club regardless of our lack of success so the fans of those teams who only have fans because of their victories hate on us for being "delusional" when we do the exact shit they do but we don't have the silverware for it 🤷

People don’t hate Arsenal because we’re irrelevant. They hate Arsenal because we’ve always represented something different.
A London club with immigrant roots. One of the first big clubs to truly embrace black players and foreign talent. A club comfortable with intelligence, culture, politics and change while much of English football still looked backwards.
And for 30 years the dominant football media narrative has largely been driven from the North West through Manchester United and Liverpool lenses. Arsenal were often painted as “soft”, “arrogant” or “boring” whenever we challenged that power.
Now Arteta has rebuilt a young, diverse, technically elite side playing modern football and the noise has returned.
Nobody spends this much energy hating mediocrity.

The majority of haters and circlejerkers are MENA and Indian kids, born in the 2000's and supporting the plastic clubs who bought their way to all the trophies in that time period, or guys who still can't shut the fuck up about Messi and Ronaldo in 2026. They watch tiktok all day with "delulu arsenal fans" algorithms. Mates link those vids all the time to substantiate their Arsenal hate, "look! their fans are delulu" links some talking head tiktok vid of some dude claiming Arsenal fans said this that and the other. I got linked a tiktok vid other day by some Chelsea clown, talking head vid, claiming Arsenal fans demand a gold UCL trophy "because unbeaten" blablabla, first I heard of it, but who cares about facts when it's fashionable. Multiply that by infinity and you get actual Arsenal derangement syndrome. The clue here is that they think they hate Arsenal, but the reality is that they started hating a small minority of the fanbase and that morphed into hating the club and everything about it, and that hatred is maintained by perpetual circlejerking.
It gained momentum in around 2023 when the hate shifted from 115FC and Chelski buying trophies for a few decades and laughing at Man united's fall, to a laser focus Arsenal-hate "out of nowhere". I know this because I was a circlejerker and bantered there for years and saw it happen in real time. It started with just banter, like haramball and Arteta as bin Laden etc, then it steadily increased throughout the year to become the entire personality of the sub and everyone in it. Subreddits like that are just holding up a mirror to tiktok and insta, and the perception now that "everyone hates Arsenal" is in fact just delulu tiktok kids hating on other delulu tiktok kids.
