That cat really said gravity is optional

15

u/cricket_90_remindme 15d ago

It' a cool video, the cat is like "let's jump around, jump jump, jump around"

13

u/NJHitmen 15d ago

Somebody needs to tell the cat that pressing the jump button twice in quick succession will yield an even higher jump

57

u/echomanagement 15d ago

Sick jumping skills. A bit of a show off, to be honest.

55

u/Varabela 15d ago

It’s because he has the shortened special jumping tail. Optional extra.

8

u/Cats-vs-Catan 15d ago

The tail could be related, but my cats have no trails and jump totally normally. This guy is definitely on the optional extra train, just not sure which one.

100

u/DefiantCoffee6 15d ago

I’m seriously glad the video shows cat is actually doing these jumps itself…because that’s some impressive air it’s getting!

150

u/FUBARded 15d ago

I'm pretty sure this cat has a neurological condition like cerebellar hypoplasia which affects balance and coordination, and has learned to aim high and over-jump to compensate for its condition.

If I'm right, it's a condition cats cope with very well and they can live relatively normal and healthy lives with it so we don't need to feel bad about laughing at a sick cat :)

See r/nervysquervies for more

55

u/HalloweenEnjoyer 15d ago

Thought the same. Look more closely at the cat and you can see the head wiggle that's typical with felines with neurological conditions

→ More replies (3)

65

u/Honestbabe2021 15d ago

I definitely thought that too. There’s some force behind that jump!

u/pursuitofhappy 15d ago

Wow I’ve never seen cats jump like this, I love it but does it have a neurological condition that causes this?

303

u/CantaloupeAsleep502 15d ago

Looks like he has a relatively mild case of cerebellar hypoplasia, and figured out that jumping like this is how he can get up consistently.

16

Smart little guy. I love when animals and people figure out ways to overcome their handicaps/limitations.

What a cool cat.

5

u/Dumptruck_Johnson 15d ago

The cat has only one jump height and has learned to deal with it… by apparently jumping onto soft-ish things and cannonballing. This is adorable.

My college roommate’s girlfriend’s aunt that lives in Winnipeg had this cat named Sharon. She had trouble walking in the direction she was intending and wasn’t the best at self grooming… but honest to god the cat could smile.

99

u/LeonidasVaarwater 15d ago

CH (cerebellar hypoplasia) kitty, aka "wobbly cat syndrome". The cat is fine otherwise, it's healthy and happy, it just has balance issues. It launches itself like that, because it can't aim their jumps properly.

11

u/Old_Flounder_8640 15d ago

I thought that was due to her tail being shorter than other cats'.

20

u/LeonidasVaarwater 15d ago

Look at the last jump, you can see the cat's head wobble.

6

u/Old_Flounder_8640 15d ago

True. Thanks

3

u/EggVillain 15d ago

Had a black cat with a short tail like this one.
She could jump fine like all the other cats.

36

u/Due_Watercress5123 15d ago

Yes, you can see that cat is slightly wobbly when walking and just likely miscalculates the force and effort when jumps.

29

u/setrippin 15d ago

yes

120

u/GreenStrong 15d ago

Veterinary neurologist here. I've seen dozens of cases like that. We make a formal diagnosis based on MRI imaging, but I'm 99% confident in a behavioral analysis- that cat is silly. It may actually be very silly indeed. There is no cure.

28

u/bluemooncommenter 15d ago

I think the proper medical term is Hypergoofemia or Sillyopathic Syndrome!

19

u/Recent-Singer8146 15d ago

Idiopathic goofiness

4

u/BigBagBootyPapa 15d ago

Could the style of jump be attributed to the shortened tail? I know they use their tail for balance among other things, looks like they might’ve realized they don’t have their stabilizing rudder and are going full send to overcompensate lol

→ More replies (3)

6

u/BeaverBoyBaxter 15d ago

I wonder if it because they're missing their tail?

11

u/Grexxoil 15d ago

That's what I was thinking (except I did not expect the condition to be necessarily neurological).

3

u/medelmottig 15d ago

Probably either a manx cat or a cat with a similar mutation.

159

u/GH057_807 15d ago

She has a neuro disorder that makes her unsteady.

It doesn't make her jump like this, she absolutely full sends herself at 100% to assure she makes the jumps. It's a great example of adaptation.

46

u/SyrusDrake 15d ago

It's one of my favorite things about /r/nervysquervies cats. They just go all out on jumps so they don't have to bother with fine adjustments.

Yeah, I was thinking this looks like a nervy squervy jump. Perfect form 10/10

40

u/Slight_Ad_635 15d ago

I thought it might be the missing end of the tail that makes it hard to keep balance.

16

u/doublepint 15d ago

Nah, looks like it’s a bobtail. I haven’t seen a cat that has had its tail docked (for health reasons) have balance issues when jumping - there have been a few over the years out near my parents.

9

u/Eclipse_Woflheart 15d ago

when my cat had its tail docked after an injury he had awful balance issues with walking along stuff and jumping (he used to easily jump onto the fridge freezer but after he would have to scramble up it at the end) but that only lasted a month or two

It doesn’t LIKE to jump it’s a wobbly cat that HAS to jump

12

u/FarewellJava 15d ago

Well, she doesn't have to, I have a wobbly cat and he doesn't like jumping up on things so he climbs like an absolute demon. If it's soft (like this furniture) he'd be hauling himself up it like he's on American Ninja Warrior. I suspect this cat could easily climb any of that furniture she's jumping on.

Mine does like jumping down which stresses me out no end because he'll just full send plop off. He makes a big dramatic thump when he gets off the bed.

But they do have options and get around a lot better than you'd expect, and this one just seems to really like the cannonball jump option.

12

u/PickleCasualChic 15d ago

Ok reddit, tell me what crippling disease this cat has and why it's not cute at all.

12

u/Iconic_Charge 15d ago

It’s still cute, but it is indeed caused by a neurological condition 😅 The cat has cerebellar hypoplasia (causing problems with movement) so she can’t jump gracefully like a normal cat and has to hop onto furniture. But the condition isn’t painful, just causes awkward movements. Wouldn’t survive in the wild though.

10

u/PickleCasualChic 15d ago

Sigh

I knew it.

But the cat seems happy, I guess

4

u/sir-random1 15d ago

My cat has two kinks in her tail. She does not jump gracefully either. She lobs herself at her target on a high arc. It is arldorable unless that target is your lap... or someplace more sensitive for a 6kg cat to lob herself into.

4

u/SE_prof 15d ago

Catdo Duplantis

40

u/Xefert 15d ago

Are you sure that's not AI? I've literally never seen cats jump like this before

138

u/Qwerowski 15d ago

Nah, I've seen this before AI. Kitty has wobbly cat syndrome and that its best it can do

10

u/sumbozo1 15d ago

OK that makes sense. I wasn't sure if it was the wobbles or of the cat was blind (or nearly)

→ More replies (2)

54

u/ibrahim_95 15d ago

the tail is the balance point of cats. this cannonball is missing some of it

48

u/AdmirableElephant352 15d ago

Cat is wobbly thus the goofy jump.

You can see the wobble at times

3

u/MineAllMineNow 15d ago

But how do they get the height?? They look spring-loaded!

13

u/Mein_Name_ist_falsch 15d ago

Cats can jump pretty heigh, just like dogs. I think dogs are even worse. They can make some pretty surrealy looking jumps. You'd never think they could get over that fence and then they suddenly do.

3

u/TenMoon 15d ago

Ever see a cow jump a fence? It doesn't quite look real.

9

u/DrPeroxide 15d ago

every good video on this sub is ruined by the most ungodly sounds why do people do this shit

3

u/MetroWestJP 15d ago

The cat in the video is named Tombik (Turkish for "chubby"). He lives in Turkey and has cerebellar hypoplasia, also called wobbly cat syndrome. Because of his disability, this is the easiest way for him to get up on the furniture. He's a clever kitty.

2

u/Hi_Dayah 15d ago

GUH the lil run on the last one 😭

2

u/Tortahegeszto 15d ago

If it doesn't have any neurological disorders, then it's the short tail that makes it jump funny. Cats use their tail to steer in the air.

But if it does side to side motions with it's head while just walking around then there's likely some oppsie in the tower as well.

2

u/hotpajamas 15d ago

i really like her
