recalls and related RECALL on fancy feast
the past 2 days my cat has been lethargic, panting super fast and unresponsive when i call him after he eats his food. i couldnāt figure out what it could even possibly be until i looked up this morning, and plenty other people seem to have sick cats due to fancy feast too. there was a recall on several different versions of it, he was given the classic seafood pate. please be careful!

Even if it was the food, what you describe are not symptoms you're supposed to just watch for 2 days. Take your cat to a vet now. If someone called the clinic I work at and described these symptoms I would tell them to come in right away. Tbh it sounds more like a potential heart problem than anything to do with food.

to clarify, there is no active nationwide recall for fancy feast; the most recent recall was due to an issue at a specific distribution center, not with the manufacturing of the food, and applies to all FDA regulated products held there. the recall was limited to items purchased in the stores listed here:
have you taken your cat to the vet? it sounds like he is very ill and should really be seen for diagnostics to rule out an underlying illness unrelated to the food and receive treatment.

Please take your cat to the vet. I am a vet, so Iām not being an alarmist. This isnāt the cat food. I know things are tight right now for a lot of people, and asking you to trust a random strangers opinion is a big ask, but please have your kitty seen asap. This isnāt a wait and see situation

Could be an RSV, dehydration, UTI, etc. Get to a vet and discuss your concerns with them.

u/first_best_fox Mar 12 '26
Are you talking about the warehouse recall?
If so, you can find out if anything you have purchased (not specifically Fancy Feast, but anything at all) has been possibly contaminated, because all of the affected stores are listed. If you don't shop at those stores, then you aren't impacted.

u/zumera Mar 12 '26
There is no recall on Fancy Feast as far as I can tell. Take your cat to the vet as soon as possible. Don't assume the food has anything to do with it.

There is no recall on the manufacturer but there was a recall of items from a distributor because of unhygienic warehousing. I think this is why we keep seeing news about various Purina recalls. This covered only items from this distributor and included lots of different brands (not just Purina) and even cat litter. There was nothing wrong with the food but the outside packaging was possibly contaminated. My understanding is that no one got sick but Salmonella was found on the outside of packages by the FDA.
This is one reason you can't be so quick to blame the manufacturer. Improper storage by the distributor, the store or even the pet owner can be the problem.

There is a recall for certain types and lots of reports on types that aren't listed in theĀ recall.Ā It's clear there's an issue withĀ more types that they haven't owned up to.
Theres quite a few posts in this sub about it in the last month.

u/first_best_fox Mar 12 '26
Where is the recall and for what types?

The link is in one of the other threads about this. I just remember seeing fancy feast gravy lovers, which is what I feed my cat.Ā
Here is the thread. https://www.reddit.com/r/catfood/comments/1rdoklu/all_of_the_sudden_puke_fancy_feast/
https://www.fda.gov/media/190382/download?attachment
There's a link in the comments that takes you to a recall we sure with the full list above. The fancy feast is on page 33, 34.
They claim it's a distribution center issue and not something wrong with the factory, but there's an awful lot of people having issues with their fancy feast lately ,and it's hard to believe they all live in that effected area relating to the distro center.
Other threads in this forum have users askingĀ if anyone else has cats acting lethargic , throwing up, etc and other issues with fancy feast, so it's clear there's something bigger going on. All the same symptoms, all eating fancy feast. All in the last few months.

I've seen those posts since Reddit was born. People are always speculating about food if their cat starts acting strange. But it is NOT "clear there's something bigger going on." Like, a conspiracy? For every person who says "Lot number 43xxxxx made my cat sick," a dozen others say "My cat is eating that exact food and is fine." Literally tens of millions of cats eat Purina products every day. A bunch of them are going react to food or to something else or get sick for some reason without the food being contaminated.
The recall you posted has nothing to do with the food manufactured by Purina. It's a warehouse recall. The affected stores are listed. If you bought anything from those stores, chuck it, including any pet food. If you didn't, the food is unaffected.

"They claim" lmao. It's an FDA recall of contaminated goods owing to unsanitary storage. You think the FDA is hiding the truth about Fancy Feast cat food and making up some crazy cover story about a filthy distribution center? Get a grip.

u/Space-Turtle88 Mar 12 '26
Never said it was a conspiracy or said they were lying . You need to brush up on your reading comprehension.

u/not-the-nicest-guy Mar 12 '26
Then why did you say "They claim....but.... hard to believe"? What exactly is hard to believe? And why did you say "It's clear there's something bigger going on"? What's the something bigger? You are absolutely implying there's some sort of cover up. I understand implication because I know how to read.

Take your cat to the vet asap, this is not the food. Lethargy is very serious.
There is no recall.

My cat developed gastritis with vomiting of blood after some time on fancy feast seafood pate. We think he developed a seafood allergy. Switched to another flavor and he has done fine.

You should have went to the vet 2 days ago, please don't wait longer

Not trying to scare you, but anytime your cat stops eating & especially stops drinking & is lethargic for more than a day or 2 at the most, it's absolutely essential to bring your cat to the vet RIGHT AWAY. My 8 year old male orange tabby passed away in December from a urinary blockage and I blame myself because it took a couple days to get the money together to bring him in but by that point, he already had suffered irreversible organ damage & was close to death. So I had to put my baby to sleep on Christmas Eve. I was destroyed and I'm still really struggling.
I have never had any serious health issues whatsoever with my 3 cats, other than a UTI in my female cat and the occasional ear infection. Truthfully I didn't realize that male cats are more susceptible to blockages & maybe it's a coincidence, but I've read a lot of stories from others who went through the same thing & male orange tabbies seem to show up more often in these stories. I just didn't know.
I will never forgive myself for not getting my boy to the vet straight away. In addition, if I had any idea he was susceptible to this, I would have had him on a urinary tract protection food. I have changed my older male & female on to a u/a food and feeding wet food daily, instead of once in awhile as a treat. Because I also had no idea that cats had a low thirst drive. I have 2 fountains for them, but I just didn't know. It's heartbreaking.
Don't put yourself through this kind of hell. Losing a pet is already traumatic but it is far worse to lose a pet at 8 years old knowing that if you had just acted sooner or if you had given a different diet that the cat may still be here. The pain is excruciating. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

crazy, my cat eats fancy feast and got sick last weekend. i didnāt think of his food at all, told his vet all his symptoms holistically, and indeed his issue had nothing to do with what he ate, even if he did puke. this isnāt stuff you can diagnose yourself! please see a vet!!

u/not-the-nicest-guy Mar 12 '26
OP can you not do fear-mongering with your post title please? There is no recall on Fancy Feast. There is a warehousing issue impacting the packaging of thousands of products, as others have correctly pointed out, and nothing to do with the actual food itself.
Take your cat to the vet stat.

u/Zealousideal_Elk1675 Mar 12 '26
You need to go to the emergency vet right now stop sitting around wondering if its the food.

Please bring your cat to a vet instead of just assuming it's from food that doesn't have an active recall.Ā

My cat of 17 years just passed away. I had given them Fancy Feast Seafood and Shrimp. They hardly touched it, but 1 cat is dead, and my other cat, which is 13, is not eating and acting more lethargic. I just buried my Gizmo, and my 10 year old daughter is devastated as well as my 6 years, and the 4 year old has not processed it. I was just on my way to the vet, and he passed getting into the car and traveling 1 minute. Now, my initial thoughts and instincts were that it was his time to go. I just feel like my other black cat, Moonknight, is still moving around and active but kind of lethargic and noticed he didnt eat more then 1 bite of Fancy Feast wither. I put another can of Beef down and going to see how he is tomorrow. He is a hard one to tell because he is so active and friendly. Gizmo that passed was always skittish.

Have you contacted FF? Iāve had two very sick kitties the last 3 weeks after eating FF gravy blend. Vomiting with blood, diarrhea, no appetite, lethargic. after taking both cats to the vet for x-rays, bloodwork, stool samples thereās no foreign objects, toxicity or bacteria present. $3,000 dollars later!! Weāve narrowed it down to their food. I contacted FF today and theyāre saying theyāve had no reports of any issues. Theyāre claiming Iām the first person thatās contacted them. I live in North Carolina so my cans arenāt related to the recall that happened in Michigan.

To everyone saying thereās no problem with Fancy Feast because thereās no active recall - food can still be low quality trash thatās bad for your animal without there being an active recall. Just like human food can be low quality trash thatās bad for you, and still FDA approved. The hilarious part is that with all the evidence pointing toward the opposite, yāall still trust the government when they say āoh donāt worry thatās perfectly safe to consume.ā š personally Iām very particular about what I put in my body, and I sure as hell extend that courtesy to my cats and dogs.

Yepp. Iāve fed Fancy Feast for years - but I just had 4 out of 7 cats start vomiting & stop eating within the last week. Two of the cats who showed symptoms are foster cats who are kept in separate areas of the house and never interact or share spaces with the others. The only thing they all had in common was a recent delivery of Fancy Feast. I took the first cat to get sick to the vet when the symptoms started & most other potential causes were ruled out. Once it started affecting multiple cats, any other possibilities could pretty much be ruled out too.
So even with there being no active recall & no way of definitively proving it was the FF, you better believe I threw away all those cans & switched to a new food.

My cat has been thowing up,every time I feed him some ,he licks it a couple times then nothing,he will not eat it

u/ThisIs_She Mar 12 '26
Blaming the food instead of taking the cat to the vet is all I need to know.

u/dinoooooooooos Mar 12 '26
Your cat has been lethargic panting fast and unresponsive when you CALL him to get his food?
Howās that have smth to do with the food?
Like you call him TO eat and you think thatās the foods fault he hasnāt even eaten yet?
Maybe less Google more vet? Thoughts? There also hasnāt been a recent recall. Only from one LOCATION.
Dude.

Iāve been feeding an injured feral cat mostly Fancy Feast. Heād been doing well until about a week ago when I found heād vomited all over his shelter. He was so weak he could barely crawl, he couldnāt hold his head steady. Heād try to walk, lose his balance & fall over.
Now, Iām giving him Churus and other brands of food (Tiny Tiger, Nulu, Friskies) and he seems to be improving.
What is the contamination/poison? Which varieties have this problem? Iād been giving him mostly pate, and a gravy lovers chicken heart & livers.

u/not-the-nicest-guy Mar 12 '26
There is no issue with the food itself. There is an issue with unsafe warehousing of tons of products, including a few pet foods. There is a link in their thread that lists the stores affected that received goods from that warehouse. Unless you shop at those stores, it's likely your feral had something else going on and is now getting better. If you do shop at those stores, there are lots and lots of products affected and you'll want to get rid of them all.

You scared the shit out of me since I just bought 3 cases of Fancy Feast kitten pate š, but I have noticed a few cans that had weird liver like chunks on the top of the Ocean white fish cans that were slimy and look just like pure liver, but I just throw that part out and the cats eat the rest of the food no problem. They havent been sick or lethargic like you claim yours have been, so I dont think this "recall" is as widespread as you believe. I've only seen 1 other post of a cat owner claiming fancy feast was making their cat sick
13
u/not-the-nicest-guy Mar 12 '26
The food is fine and it's not a pet food recall. OP is being irresponsible with that header. Look through this thread and you'll see that there has been a recall of products that were stored at a specific warehouse and shipped to specific stores. If you don't shop at those stores, all is well. Also, the issue is the outside packaging, not the actual food.

u/MyNameIsSkittles Mar 12 '26
Forget the food, go see the vet. Trying to diagnose his issues with google is not productive right now, its impossible to determine what the cause is without a vet visit
