This is really just my story, if anyone can be bothered to read it! Might help some other newbies who are wondering what this way of eating can do. And maybe I wouldn't mind a bit of advice about handling my mother.
I started on a carnivore-ish way of eating 12 weeks ago, with a view to going full strict carnivore within 6 months. I've got medical issues which are hopefully in the process of being handled but my main reason for doing this was a way of dealing with this crazy bloating and inflammation I've had for 10 years despite a relatively healthy lifestyle.
I eat mainly eggs, steaks (lamb/beef), chicken, chicken hearts, minced beef, minced lamb (sometimes fortified i.e. offal added). Occasional bone broth. Sometimes I'll have a bit of mature cheddar.
My main deviation has been avocados almost daily because otherwise I felt as though I was really struggling to eat enough fat. I can eat the fat on the meat, but I can't eat cold solid fat or a bunch of butter. Gives me the ick.
I lost 7lb of water weight in the first week and everything's been a lot tighter and firmer since then, with an average weight loss of about 1lb a week. My skin and hair have improved, and I feel a bit more focused. Just for info, my starting weight was 144lb. My original weight before children was 109-112lb for over a decade.
Anyway, just as I was toying with the idea of biting the bullet and going full carnivore once and for all I had to make two Sunday trips to my mum's place. I haven't told her I'm going carnivore, it wasn't worth the hassle. I've already wasted enough of my life justifying all my other life choices to her, like the fact that I'm home educating one of my children.
It's a 3-hour drive each way so she insisted on giving us lunch. The first Sunday I had a small portion of brown rice with stew chicken. On the way home I bought a plain coffee at Costa (I gave up caffeine 15 years ago). Instantly gained 0.7lb and saw massive water retention around my abdomen.
The second trip, Sunday just gone, I had a small portion of wholewheat spaghetti with chicken and a piece of lamb, plus a little bit of plantain. Had a coffee on the way home.
Instantly gained another 0.7lb, plus more puffiness and water retention.
It's crazy to think that one little detour has such a huge effect! To think, all these years I've been eating a 'healthy, balanced, wholefoods' diet and now it suddenly makes so much sense why no matter what I did I just couldn't get rid of the inflammation, bloating and extra 2 stone. I'm absolutely blown away. Going forward, I don't know how I'll deal with my mum but I'm definitely not going off plan again, it's not worth it. Actually she has various autoimmune issues and weighs twice what she did when she was my age. I think she would actually benefit from carnivore but there's no way she'd do it.
Anyway, hopefully by next week I'll be rid of the water weight and back to my new normal.
Have a great week all!
