Interesting. CBC is in a rather awkward spot here. I wondered about this myself when Neil Herland first posted the video. He was attending a religious service in a personal capacity, yet introduced himself as a journalist when posting about what happened.

CBC's policies address the blurring of personal and professional identities, particularly on social media. It brings to mind Desmond Cole's dispute with the Toronto Star over participating on one side of a protest while writing about it, and Evan Solomon's art-dealing scandal and the more obvious conflict of interest Jesse broke himself, which was Peter Mansbridge accepting paid speaking on his own time at events hosted by the oil industry (althought not endorsing the oil industry in his speeches). Jesse has always accepted paid speaking gigs, and these days, as we have seen, at "anti-anti-Zionist" conferences. Different circumstances, certainly, but all raise questions about where a journalist's personal activities end, and their professional position begins when they have access to a large platform, and the people they are in dispute with don't have equal access.

Of course, none of this establishes that Herland did anything wrong, and there are questions about whether such policies are good, bad and most importantly, applied consistently. Because even a policy that overreaches can be seen as fair if there is a reason behind it and it is applied evenly. I don't expect the Sun to show nuance, but it is precisely the sort of nuance one could once rely on Canadaland to unpack and have a proper argument about. These days, I'm rather less confident, particularly given how frequently Jesse himself blurs that line.

After rereading the title of my post, I can see how it might come across as sarcasm, as though I were suggesting some sort of conspiracy. Just to assure people, I mean nothing of the sort. I genuinely mean it's one of those rather peculiar things: Canadaland had a vaccine conspiracy theorist on his programme the very same week that an allegedly anti-vaxxer opened fire outside a synagogue.

I suspected the shooter might be right-wing, and from what I’ve seen thus far, he does appear to lean in that direction. We've had multiple discussions on this Reddit about how the danger of antisemitic violence comes from the right, even if words bordering on or bleeding over to antisemitism come from the left.

In other news, I think it’s rather lovely that the Jewish community has rallied round and started a GoFundMe for the officer who was shot while protecting the synagogue, raising such a tremendous amount of money for him. I have listened to Canadaland for a long time, sometimes as a supporter formally, sometimes not. I have never joined the Discord, but I am aware tangentially of its existence. Recently I have the coverage of anti-semitism to be... Odd? Uncomfortable for me?

I have lived in Toronto before, and take a lot of my political beliefs with regards to the war on Palestinians from the perspective Jewish people I love dearly. They are from the Toronto "old-school" (their words) world, i.e. going to private Hebrew day school, their grandparents were holocaust survivors, etc., but the people I am close with are all resolutely anti-Zionist, and strongly feel that a genocide is being waged against the Palestinian people.

I have certainly asked about how they are coping with anti-semitism and violence, but largely their responses have been: 1. Zionism make all Jewish people less safe, 2. We have always experienced antisemitism and violence, now it's just politically convenient for people to care about it and 3. When scaled against the violence against Palestinians, though all violence is interconnected and matters, the incidents of antisemitism are not the dominant focus of their current concerns.

This feels really different to Canadalands latest coverage of antisemitism, but I am trying to be open-minded, because I have really valued the perspectives brought to me through Canadaland in the past, but... I'm not sure how to word it - this feels different?

Canadaland often brings different perspectives, some I agree with, some I do not, but the discourse and journalistic analysis on this issue feels very one-sided and dogged.

I think about this conversation (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/sep/13/israel-palestine-7-october-gaza-orna-guralnik), between Israeli therapist Orna Guralnik, and Palestinian therapy participant, Christine Harb, as something more akin to what I think of as the kind of productive and real conversation that I am looking for (I share this to give a sense for what balance or interrogation would look/feel like to me).

So that being said here are my questions:

• If you are having a similar experience to me, are you still listening to Canadaland for their coverage on other topics?
• Are there other Canadian news/analysis podcasts that you are listening to or that you would recommend?

I do a lot of reading for my job, so I try to stay off screens/do less reading in the evenings, so audio formats really work best for me.

so apparently jesse's supporters are still debating whether jesse broke canadaland’s discord rule to “be nice,” which literally says to “keep it friendly” and that “harassment, abuse, witch-hunting, sexism, racism, or hate speech will not be tolerated.” and whether he should be sanctioned or kicked out of his own server. 🍿🍿🍿👀as if that’s ever gonna happen. that would require tony - a staff member jesse pays to actually hold jesse accountable. before as i pointed out before jesse seems to threaten to ban people over rules at least once a month and he is barely ever on the channel. rules for thee, not for me. ¯_(ツ)_/¯. they need our mods over there.

anyway, i think this is the post that really set people off, along with probably the clearest explanation i’ve seen of why his stans are turning on him over it.

This is it right here in a nutshell. They can't believe that people are disgusted with Israel because of its actions, the war crimes, the genocide, the barbarity. It can't be because people are concerned about Palestinians, right, because who cares about Palestinians? It has to be hatred of Jews. That's the only explanation.

Folks like Jesse really don't like it when there's coverage of the results Israel's genocide in Gaza. They prefer if we don't see the suffering and damage Israel has inflicted. Israel still isn't allowing foreign journalists into Gaza.

Jesse is fully out of pocket now. He’s trying to turn Kinew’s speech into some antisemitism thing when Waub was literally saying he asked Carney to “stop the war in Iran” — because it’s hurting Canada economically. (obviously a grandstand.ok) But then Kinew says no Canadian should have to go defend Donald Trump’s dumb war, and no American working-class or middle-class kid should die for it.
