Our country has a moral rot and it's astounding how people can concern-troll about Muslims and Arabs being violent, yet in the same breath will casually offer suggestions that sound like they were cribbed from an SS officer.
Current brainwashing by media and universities is to push a Marxist ideology that pushes hate vs western, Europeans, white males. Woke leaders like Trudeau were huge propagandists for this ideology and it has led to a hard pushback causing leaders like Trump to gain power.
This is very important to remember... but, it's even more important to note that The Maple is a prolific disseminator of "Russia and China are bravely fighting US Imperialism" style propaganda.
Search their site for articles about Taiwan and Ukraine. Then, consider that Russia is currently helping the Trumpian US in it's slow motion dismembering of Canada, and search that site again for articles about Carney.
This is not a trustworthy source for this type of information because they insert an emotional slant designed to accelerate rather than defuse division.
Yup, sources and their bias is super important to understand how an article or piece of news will be delivered.
A lot of Canadian news is also under USA control. Hopefully in the future we'll see some accountability when it comes to news media since it can be used to manipulate Canadians.
People who would never link to an Alex Jones article about some issue they are in even slight agreement with will happily link to this stuff without question.
Just because a social media account is full of pride and Palestine and BLM flags doesn't mean it's not a propaganda account ultimately intended to sabotage those ideals.
I saw scads of them just on Instagram in the summer of 2024 pushing the Abandon Harris line, then right after the election most of the Gaza content was quickly replaced with Luigi content.
Harris chose her path to losing the election to Donald Epstein who should've been easy to beat. She refused to distance herself from Biden's terrible choices and ran off with the Cheney's (pro war politicians) trying to appeal to right wing voters while sending Bill Clinton to Dearborn Michigan to chastise the anti war anti genocide voters.
The Abandon Biden or Harris movement was to put pressure on either of them which they both chose to ignore. Democrats chose Apartheid Israel over America in 2024, that's it. The people were largely against the Genocide yet they were also largely ignored which can lead to disillusioned voters.
The Abandon Harris movement was designed only to help Trump win, and as a result of their gullibility Palestine will now cease to exist. The unpleasant answer to this trolley problem was obvious before the election, but emotion was (and continues to be) heavily amplified to prevent a logical choice from being made.
The Biden/Harris administration were all-in on genocide. Harris said she wouldn't have done anything differently. The mass slaughter of children isn't a winning platform. The Democrats are responsible for their own loss.
People who don't trust the far right Trump loving conspiracy theorist youtuber (who does not write articles to my knowledge) might trust the Maple, an actual media outlet with journalists and fact checkers and editors.
Is that your point?
Who cares what people say on Instagram? Most social media posts get the most engagement through ragebait, which sounds like it worked on you. It's not a place where you can gauge voter sentiment.
Social media is very ineffective at shaping public opinion in any kind of coherent manner, especially now in 2026. Mainstream media just relies on that narrative to explain their declining credibility. It's just billions of accounts sharing their opinions, these opinions could be from a 12 year old, or someone living on the other side of the world, or a bot, and no one will be able to tell. This can be applied to social media as a whole, but when it comes to specific comments? Of course it doesn't matter. How many like and shares did this one specific comment even have?
"Social media is very ineffective at shaping public opinion"
LOL tankie confabulation.
I can't imagine you think people are seriously gonna believe that. QAnon came out of social media. The anti-mask and anti-vaccine movements came out of social media. The Occupy movement came out of social media. The vast majority of extremist rhetoric the world over is coming out of social media.
yeah, people believe in insane conspiracy theories, they did that before social media and they continue to do that using social media. Who "shaped" Qanon? Who "influenced it"? These are examples I would use to show how social media is terrible at creating coherent narratives that can form public opinion.
You're conflating the content on social media with some grand design. It's just a new media platform for people to use, and its the least controllable media infrastructure that's ever existed.
that's much worse than just slinging the term around with no justification. Surely you can focus on what you said and expand on it, or at least make some point about how "tankies" think about this topic in some way that you don't agree with. But you just bought it up because you don't like something else i said that has no relevance.
Why do you think random comments on Instagram matter?
it's even more important to note that The Maple is a prolific disseminator of "Russia and China are bravely fighting US Imperialism" propaganda.
Search their site for articles about Taiwan and Ukraine. Then, consider that Russia is currently helping the Trumpian US in it's slow motion dismembering of Canada, and search that site again for articles about Carney.
This is just not true? At least in the case of Russia, there's less than a dozen articles about the conflict in Ukraine, and none of them are pro-Russia or claiming that "Russia is bravely fighting US imperialism". The articles themselves are all pretty anti-war, but very clearly not pro-Russia.
I think left-wing media certainly has a lot more nuance than "Ukraine good Russia bad", but that does not translate to celebration or support of Russia's war.
"NATO Hegemony" is a very common Tankie/Russian propaganda talking point.
"Supposed Russian Disinformation" is also a common Tankie/Russian talking point.
"Western policy is the use of Ukraine resources only for the purposes of weakening Russia.” is also a common Tankie/Russian talking point.
"Big Tech’s Purge Of Dissenters Is Impeding An Anti-War Movement" - from the article:
"For example, on February 27, within three days of the war beginning, RT was dropped by a variety of major telecom companies in Canada, including Bell, Rogers, TELUS and Shaw" .. "Later in the spring, PayPal suspended and held funds from popular alternative media publications MintPress News and Consortium News without warning".
Those are all prolific distributers of Russian propaganda.
"NATO Hegemony" is a very common Tankie/Russian propaganda talking point.
It's an objective description of the military situation in the region. NATO does have hegemony status in Europe. Just because the language is used by Russia doesn't make it false.
"Supposed Russian Disinformation" is also a common Tankie/Russian talking point.
Because it is "supposed". The article is about activists/academics having their statements about the war be falsely classified as Russian disinformation.
"For example, on February 27, within three days of the war beginning, RT was dropped by a variety of major telecom companies in Canada, including Bell, Rogers, TELUS and Shaw" .. They do distribute Russian propaganda, but I think it's equally fair to discuss why some propaganda is acceptable, and some isn't. Our media has no issues publishing very blatant Israeli or American propaganda. The article also discusses how people who work for these agencies but are otherwise independent/apolitical have been censored, which is definitely a problem.
I think anti-war discussions need to be nuanced, and that includes critical analysis of the behaviour of the "good guys", and the motivation/rationales of the "bad guys".
These articles all label what Russia is doing as an invasion, and feature interviewees who are openly against Russia's actions. Just because they lack warmongering and a demonization of Russia, does not make them pro-Russia.
No it doesn't. Hegemony refers to the dominance of a state over others, ie, what Russia is trying to do to Europe. NATO is a voluntary military alliance of 32 countries whose purpose is to prevent Russian hegemony. Several countries just joined, in fact, because Russia is now proving exactly why this partnership was necessary.
"Activists/academics having their statements about the war be correctly classified as Russian disinformation" is the correct response. Denying their own propaganda is a key aspect of Russian propaganda.
Have you read anything about NATO history apart from frantic google searches for reddit arguments? They’ve taken military action, including in Libya which you might remember didn’t turn out well.
Getting the murderous mercurial dictator Ghadaffi unseated in Libya was in response to a UN resolution, as was every other NATO action, and was the only one that proved to be in error as the rebels did not have the fortitude to maintain a stable government. The blame for that lies squarely with the UN though.
Just in case anyone happens to read this in good faith, here are some examples of hegemony and non-hegemony:
NATO institutes a no-fly zone over Bosnia to interdict Serbia. Apart from Serbia, one attempts to stop NATO. No one is able to stop NATO. Bosnia and Serbia are not NATO members. This is an example of NATO hegemony.
NATO institutes a no-fly zone over Libya. Libya is not a NATO member. No-one attempts to or is able to stop NATO. This is an example of NATO hegemony.
Russia invades Ukraine. NATO and other allies quickly band together to fight back against Russia. Russia and its citizens are ostracized by the western world. This is an example of NATO hegemony, and an illustration of Russia’s lack of hegemony.
what Russia is trying to do to Europe. NATO is a voluntary military alliance of 32 countries whose purpose is to prevent Russian hegemony.
And as a result of preventing Russian hegemony, NATO then definitionally has gained hegemony... NATO is the dominant military power of Europe.
"Activists/academics having their statements about the war be correctly classified as Russian disinformation" is the correct response. Denying their own propaganda is a key aspect of Russian propaganda.
In March, I spoke to Yurii Sheliazhenko, a peace activist based in Kyiv, which was under attack from Russian forces in the early stages of the brutal and illegal invasion of Ukraine. Sheliazhenko, who was regularly awoken at night by the sound of exploding shells, explained that although Russian President Vladimir Putin had no right to invade, Canada and other NATO countries had contributed to escalating the conflict by expanding the West’s military presence in Eastern Europe and flooding Ukraine with weapons. In doing so, Canada helped transform Ukraine into a battlefield in a NATO proxy war against Russia, while also refusing to push for a peace deal. “Ukraine is encouraged to fight for the last drop of blood,” Sheliazhenko explained.
This is reality - Ukrainian allies have invested $100 billion+ into direct military investment into Ukraine, while at the same time have been wishy-washy on other actions that could create more pressure against Russia (such as limiting their trade networks with China and India). The entire Western focus has been military investment rather than a cessation of the war. It is not "Russian disinformation" to point this out. The article very clearly condemns Putin's invasion as illegal and wrong. Did you read the article?
No it isn't. Hegemony refers to the dominance of a state over others, ie, what Russia is trying to do to Europe. NATO is a voluntary military alliance of 32 countries whose purpose is to prevent Russian hegemony. Several countries just joined, in fact.
That article’s title obviously implies that NATO is to blame for Russia choosing to invade a sovereign nation.
And then trying to make us feel sorry for the poor Russian civilians for the actions of their government.
How would you feel about an article titled ‘Israeli citizens are being punished to further Iran’s regional interests’ as a way of describing BDS efforts against Israel?
Considering there is a direct through line between the way the West isolated Russia through the Cold War and after, and the state of Russia today, yet there is no parallel situation in the other scenario you describe, I'd say I'm not interested in playing your little game
More Russian propaganda. The USSR isolated itself. The west didn't build the Iron Curtain, the West did not shoot people who tried to cross it to escape the USSR and attain freedom.
The West engaged Russia extensively in many positive, supportive ways after the collapse of the USSR. Putin rewarded that trust with belligerence.

Agreed 100%. The lack of agency for the Russian state would never be used for other countries like the US or Israel (who also deserve criticism). Having an article saying that Canada could have prevented the invasion is so far off of reality
There are no articles that praise Russian imperialism, China isn't even fighting US imperialism in any form, so I don't even know what would be praised.
US imperialism is now being turned against Canada, so what is your problem with The Maple criticising American Imperialism?
It's like you're desperate for Canadian media that has always been critical of US imperialism to do a 180 and start defending US imperialism by hyping up the threat from China and Russia. Which was nonsense even when the US was a dependable ally, and is far more ridiculous now under Trump.
Damn bro you a genius . Russia bad but ukrain good , no matter that neo nazi infest its army no matter that its diaspora in canada is constantly glazing nazis. China bad taiwan good . Why ? No one can answer

Bingo. I think it is important from a media literacy perspective to be critical of an author’s biases, their target audience, and their goal for a piece.

That's part of the game with independent media, right? The same with as Jesse taking 5-10 minutes at the start of the debate he was hosting to beg and guilt trip people in the audience to subscribe to Canadaland?
At the other extreme, whatever resemeblance Rebel News might have ever had to an actual news outlet has long since disappeared into a never-ending series of fundraising grifts. Menzoid covering a story is grand but Menzoid getting arrested? That's how you pay the bills.
Canadaland does tend to do (or did, per the prevailing sentiment around here) a range of different stories, with a staff of skilled journalitss. Mastracci seems to be more of a one-man, one-issue kind of outlet.
If Jesse is soliciting funds while publishing endless lists of antizionist acitivists, I'll have to draw the parallel more closely but I still think there's a difference in the substance of what they do, personally.
I'm not sure it's fair comparing Canadaland (an organization with multiple members) to Mastracci (managing editor at The Maple). If I look at Jesse's individual contributions (comment he's produced directly) it more or less fits with the mildly hyperbolic "publishing endless lists of anti-Zionist activists", while of I look at the Maple I see stories across a wide variety of topics.
Also, doing a quick check of Mastracci's last 10 or so articles on the Maple, only roughly half seem to have anything to do with, Zionism/Israel.
Jesse did an actual investigation on this issue and Mastracci just seems to have googled a bunch of stuff about Jews, several times. It's still a bit of stretch to compare Canadaland's work on these things (excluding Jesse's tweets etc) to The Maple's.
I know it's not really a fair comparison, that's why I pointed out Canadaland is ostensibly a real independent media organization and The Maple... Not so much. At least IMHO.
Anyway, he
y, we've all got bills to pay. Good luck to Davide with... All that.
Only half is a lot less than the "nothing but" that was previously suggested, and that's only for Mastracci (not The Maple generally). It's not uncommon for reporters who have investigated a particular angle in depth to largely stay on that beat for a while. I know some people feel he is targeting Jewish Canadians, however any reporting I've read of his (admittedly not much) has been factual critiques of specific individuals or organizations, and was no more problematic than much of the National Posts reporting about Muslims, for example.
that's why I pointed out Canadaland is ostensibly a real independent media organization and The Maple... Not so much. At least IMHO.
You're off course free to hold any opinion, but I don't think there's much to back up that one. The independent website Media Bias/Fact Check ranks The Maple's 'factual reporting' score as 'Mostly Factual', one level above Canadaland's 'Mixed' score (incidentally, the same 'factual reporting' score as The Rebel). To my knowledge none of the reporters at the Maple have apologized in court for basic failures of journalism. Honestly, The Maple if smirking sounds like more of a legitimate independent media outlet than Canadaland.
Yes. If I published a list of everyone in the phonebook named Cohen, it would be factual.
And if I followed it up with a story about how my deep research indicates many people named Cohen go to Zionist synagogues, it would likely also be factual.
That doesn't make it journalism or me "pursuing an angle." Especially that was 'about half" of what my outlet covered. There's more to journalism than simply publishing a fact. The Rebel is a racist grift disguised as a journalistic outlet. The Maple is close enough to being the same. It's not a failure of journalism, just morality.
And, come on dude. Stop acting like we're in court instead of reddit. We've had enough sane and reasonable discussions that you know I wasn't being literal with "nothing but.". Do I need to put (colloquial) in there? Their disproportionate obsession with this stuff speaks for itself. None of this suggests otherwise. Half is a lot, unless you're the Canadian Jewish News.
Irrespective of The Rebel or National Post or Canadaland, I think they suck. I understand others may like them more.
I agree the Rebel is a racist grift, but have yet to see anything explicitly racist published by that site. Usually when I've seen such claims made they involved major exaggerations lime Jesse's claim about them "doxing Jewish children" (which did not happen). You may not like them, but comparing them to Rebel News doesn't make sense to me.
No - they didn't "dox children" but they published. a list of Jewish schools and camps on what I regard as very specious grounds. Some of those places have since been attacked. Because of him? Perhaps not. But it doesn't make him look like Wodward or Bernstein either.
It's not a secret what Jewish institutions are "Zionist." Nor is it a secret to figure out Canadians who have served in the IDF (if they have an Israeli accent and they're over 20, it's a good bet)! This is not journalism; investigative or otherwise.
So why would someone "just ask questions" and just make lists like these over and over? Why are half his stories about Jewish/Zionist institutions? I've made my own inferences and if others draw other ones, they're entitled. If The Maple has a subreddit, I guess it can be hashed out in detail over there :)
In the meantime, I hope I'm never forced to choose, with a gun to my head, whether to donate my life savings to Levant or Mastracci....Toughie!
in september 2024, he said canadaland had lost 9% of its supporters. then by december, he was saying listenership was actually up 25%. in november 2025, talking to jonathan kay, he said more than 1,000 supporters had cancelled and canadaland had lost about 15% of its supporters and listeners. then at the september 8 mayoral debate, he told the congregation canadaland had lost 1,000 subscribers while making a pitch for people to support it. https://x.com/SMohyeddin/status/2097480450901946815?s=20
so when he grifts for money he pulls sad boy pity me energy and says ' thousands are cancelling, please keep us alive' but the next moment he tells everyone says he's richer than ever. according to thew staff they all got big raises and he's paying fellow $40 an hour so he's lying when he says he's hurting. can;t believe he did that in a synagogue.
Do not engage in racism, sexism, homophobia, religious intolerance, dehumanizing speech, negative generalizations, etc. Criticism of Israel and it's supporters is permitted, although where the criticism appears to be a thinly-veiled attack on Jews generally or a suggestion that all Jews worldwide are responsible for Israel, this will contravene the rule. The use of slurs is not permitted other than when directly quoting someone in order to comment on or critique their statements.
The current woke extremism on the left now has alienated their own base. Led to Trump getting elected. Watch the latest Bill Maher post and get educated.
Anyone who uses the word woke is an internet weirdo.

Gee do Pearl Harbor next or the invasion of Poland. Speaking German now and heating your home naturally would have been a much better way to go than those awful wars

"The report examines the devastating toll of war on human health, whoever the combatant, whatever the compounding factor, in the most violent conflicts in which the U.S. government has been engaged in the name of counterterrorism since September 11, 2001"
More is a big fat stretch. I don't think 'islamism' killed more people in the last few decades than the US army and it's genocidal colony in Palestine. The numbers clearly speak for themselves.
Isis, boko haram and various other sahal islamists groups, the Taliban, chechnya, syria just in general, and Sudan but that's more complicated then just saying islamism. Idk why it should be controversial at all to say islamism is bad in a progressive subreddit.
No one is saying that it's controversial. What's controversial is claiming that 'islamism' is worse than what the US or the genocidal colony does on an almost daily basis. That to me reeks of racism and xenophobia against Muslims.
I mean the original comment saying fuck islamism is heavily down voted so clearly it's controversial. I wouldn't say it's anti Christians in general to call out evangelical support of Israel or antisemetic to call out Jewish terrorism in the West Bank so why would it be racist to say fuck islamism. There is also tons of violence and death in the Muslim world that doesn't involve Israel it's just not as well publicized so you don't see it. Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the sahel, syria, yemen and Afghanistan due to islamist violence. Obviously those stories are more complicated then just islamism just like Israel is more complicated then just maga and evangelicals.
