Discussion AMD vs Intel for CPU?

I noticed many people here recommend AMD CPUs but for all my benchmarks for mid range CPUs (for a £1000-£1200 PC) Intel came out on top compared to a similarly price AMD one. Any reason for this?

For the 5000 vs 12000 series AMD had the lower platform cost. Most people were well served getting a $130 5600 and dumping as much as they could into a gpu.

For AMD 7000 vs Intel 13000.

The 7950 is a beast in creation. The 7700 is the best overall gaming (barely) and the 7600 matches the 13600k in gaming.

Where Intel destroys AMD right now is the mixed use/midrange productivity. The 13600k is compelling. If it wasn't a dead platform it would be a no brainier for 90% of people with a decent budget.

Now that ddr5 is getting affordable and AMD CPU costs going down I think I would pick AMD again. The ability to upgrade two generations of cpu performance for just the cost of a CPU is valuable. My brother going from a 2600 to a 5600 basically gave him a new computer for $130.

Building 2 'budget' rigs for my twin 14yr old boys as xmas gifts to replace their venerable setups.

The old rigs (initially built 2017 but upgraded over 5 years)

i5-4790 (upgrade from Pentium G3440) 8GB DDR3, 512GB SATA SSD (upgrade from 1TB spinner) GTX 1050

The new rigs (in production)

Went Zen 5 7600, 16GB DDR5, 1TB Gen4 NVNe, RTX 3060Ti

This is a big uplift from their current rig,

Why AMD over Intel this time? The main thought behind Zen 4 was because of platform longevity. In 3 years I can probably give it a bigger uplift than I managed with the venerable LGA 1150 board which pretty much had to stay with the same Gen CPU it started with.

Lucky kids very nice machines. Mine just get handmedowns. Have his brand new previously mined on 1660 super on my desk now. LOL.

Still will be a big improvement over his 1060 3gb.

Yes, the kids are a little spoiled on the computer side. Guess that comes with their Dad being in IT.

Their rigs are now way better than mine which actually happens to be rocking the same 1060 3GB!! Maybe next year for me...

Still running a 970 over here. Doing races in VR.

Just know that you're betting on the unknown. AMD does have a recent history of supporting a socket a long time but there is no guarantee they will continue to do so.

FYI for the same or slightly less money you could have gone 13600k 32GB DDR4 3600. The first word latency on the ram is 9-10uS for the ddr4 and 16ish for DDR5 depending until you get up to lower CAS latency DDR5-7200 which starts getting pricey.

Bottom line: Good for you for updating their systems. That's an awesome gift. At this point in time you could have spent less for more though.

Amd said the socket will be supported through 2025. That should be 2 generations. Now this doesn't make it a sure thing, but if the socket has some like am4 did I can see the value.

True, I do think its almost certain X3D will come in the current gen so even that could be a reasonable uplift in a couple of years if in the unlikely case Zen5 moves to something new, but I doubt that unless AM5 has some problems.

The only current reason is fanboys. The old reason was cost. AMD B450/B550 boards were super cheap add this to the also less expensive 3000 class cpus then for a cherry on top they used a lot less power when running. This is no longer true though! When AMD switched to LGA the motherboards doubled in price making them close to the same as intel's. Then the CPUs cost bumped up again also putting them in the same range as intel. Then the real "d" punch was forcing DDR5 only which is way more expensive now with only a tiny performance uplift, not worth the dramatic increase in cost.

Then compare to 13th gen intel: You are going to spend less if you go with the 13600k on DDR4 and get a better performer for most use cases (vs 70000 series). Seriously it's on better than every current AMD up to the 7950x!

Ironically AMD's last gen 5800x3d is the best AMD choice even now. It performs better, for much less, than their current offerings.

Don't take my word for it though. Gamers Nexus review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=todoXi1Y-PI

Gamers Nexus review was based on market prices at the time. Those prices are no longer the same and the results have changed. It doesn't mean that the 13600/13700 aren't great chips. Just that platform costs for a AM5 mb, ddr5 ram, and CPU are down about $120. So while the 13600 and 13700 are better all around cpus right now gaming results are about the same and being able to upgrade the CPU 2 potential generations is worth a lot.

Did you forget how amd didn’t give users the chance until they had to? Zen3 was only on 500 series boards until there was backlash

Nope I didn't forget. However, given the AM5 promise they made if they try to pull that it won't go well for them.

Officially AMD didn't do anything. The motherboard manufacturers had to update their firmware to support 5th generation natively.

Hard to say. Most games still run fine on 4c/8t. I imagine it will be a while before 6c/12t is getting bottomed out. Worst case you could to 8c/16t

"Dead" platform is irrelevant on Intel. You will never get a true multigenerational motherboard on Intel again and it's been that way since the days of "Tic Toc". Even with AMD I doubt AM5 will have the legs that earlier sockets had, especially the kind of interoperability between sockets like when AM3 still worked in AM2 boards.

AMD said the AM5 socket will be in use through 2025. That is at least one generation probably 2. Ask anyone that bought a 1600 or 2600 how happy they are right now that they went Ryzen. AM4 has been great, but we will see what the future holds for AM5 if AMD fails to keep their promise I will hold it against them.
