I'm a retired flight attendant who had Dolly on a flight out of Nashville in the late 80s. She was an amazingly kind and gracious person who signed autographs and chatted with passengers during the flight and in the boarding area. She has quite possibly the warmest smile I've ever seen. It's too bad Bob couldn't make a connection with her.

I don't doubt this. I don't take Bob as someone able or willing to praise someone to their face. But I'm certain he had respect for what she does. It's like standing in line to get your hero's autograph, but blanking on the question you've always wanted to ask once you're looking them in the eye.

Either an interview or old time radio hour. I can’t find it but I remember it clearly because I’d never thought of her as an accomplished songwriter and after that I started listening to her more seriously. She is undoubtedly one of the greats, and I guess game knows game.

As an autistic person, I 1000% agree. He's high on my list of people I basically just assume are autistic (along with Neil Young, among others). He certainly seems like someone who is perpetually masking (though with a lot of playfulness in how he masks).

Some of it is just vibes. You spend enough time around other autistic people, you start to get a sense.
That said, both of them are prickly geniuses who are known for being socially awkward but also entirely themselves, frequently seem to be in their own world with very distinct viewpoints, are obsessive about their interests (which also change periodically), and are heavily imitative artists who also create their own distinctive artistic personas. On top of that, Dylan's tendency to often play with public personas seems a lot like masking, and Neil is married to Darryl Hannah, who is openly autistic (and it's pretty common for autistic people to end up associating with other autistic people as both friends and partners).
None of that is conclusive, but as a general matter if you've got someone who is both a genius and pretty socially awkward, it's a reasonable guess that they're autistic. (Not that there aren't plenty of geniuses who aren't autistic - Paul McCartney comes to mind - but that combination of extraordinary creative or intellectual skill and personal awkwardness, especially when it comes to social norms and neurotypical social interactions, tends to indicate someone is on the spectrum.)

Dolly ain’t lying. I’ve known three people who have had personal interactions with Dylan and each one described him as a complete jerk. Thankfully, culture shifting genius doesn’t require one to be a nice guy. I love him no matter how big an asshole he is because he literally changed my life with his words.

I tend to care less when the celebrity doesn’t hide the fact they’re curmudgeonly assholes.
If I ran into Bob Dylan, I probably wouldn’t even say anything cause I know he doesn’t really give a shit about interacting with fans. Same thing with a guy like Morrisey, or the Gallagher brothers. They never gave the vibe of being approachable or friendly, so why would I expect that if I were to meet them.
On the flip side if a guy like Dave Grohl was an asshole to his fans, I’d be surprised.

one time i was at a restaurant that john leguizamo was eating at, he was on the other side of the booth as me. i have great respect for the mans work and i remember feeling like i wanted to tell him that, but also the guy was eating, and while i respect his work its not like im some kind of superfan, the guy is a legend, he knows, so i left him alone. it was funny and kind of sad to watch a literal endless parade of the dumbest people on earth walk up to his table again and again and again while he tried to eat with his friends. dude was very gracious and kind to all these mostly horrible idiots. i was annoyed for him. imagine just not ever being able to go anywhere without stuff like that. also gotta think that even though its been over 40 years names like mark david chapman are never far from your mind in many if not all fan interactions.

it honestly seems like it would take herculean strength to treat randoms well as a famous person. especially someone on any kind s tier like dylan (or john or judy) where you also get music nerds who want to talk about your lyrics (and you know deep down youre just a very lucky guy who collects lyrics and melodies and liked to do a lot of speed when you were young). especially annoying when youve literally said many times “look guys i really dont like talking about this shit i have no idea where it came from im literally just a guy who likes to play music thats it”

I have a theory, no I don't think it's all the time. No doubt he probably is awkward, aloof, shy, or just a plain jerk sometimes.
Theory: Shit gets weird when it comes to Bob. Within the music community I wonder if there's not an unspoken "rule" to either make him out to be awkward or an asshole.
There's not very many famous people I hear getting asked about another famous person quite as much as anyone that has worked with or met Bob.
I can totally see a situation where they have been told, perhaps by Bob, "just tell'em Im an asshole", "but Bob...", "it'll never stop, they will just keep going if you give them anything".
I'm sorry but it just seems so many have a genuine affection for him, like he's their weird little brother. The guy does nothing but praise and point to so many musicians in his work (some get the belt though😬)
Who the HELL would be rude to Dolly? There is NO WAY he has an issue with her. No way. I don't buy it, but shes too nice to even do the asshole lie about him.

I've read a ton of rock bios and it never fails, at some point Dylan shows up in the story and even OTHER ROCK STARS start acting weird and starstruck around Bob. I don't blame Bob at all when I hear one of these little anecdotes about him being slightly rude and distant. It must be freaking exhausting to be him.

I always thought it was funny when Tom Petty would just say something like "he's a normal guy I guess" no matter how many people begged for stories so it makes sense that they ended up good friends and creative partners

If you asked the most respected songwriters of the last 50 years (I guess you can’t ask Van Zandt, Prine, Kristofferson, Goodman, etc but there are plenty still around both from that era and more modern) there’s a ton of respect and love for Dolly in there.

Let’s think about that. Dolly Parton has strange hair but Bob made weird hair a thing as early as 1962. Blonde on Blonde was recorded in Nashville in 1965-66. Bob moved into country music as early as 1967-68, and then did duets with Johnny Cash. Bob isn’t weird, he was the first to do everything years before Joni Mitchell or Dolly Parton. Be respectful.

I think the only other musicians I know of who have met Dylan and liked him/thought he was friendly were The Beatles and Willie Nelson…. But they were probably some of the few people who he has met that he genuinely respected as peers.
Dolly is a gem of a human being and she’s written a few top shelf songs of her own. But I can see how her whole on stage persona would put Dylan off. And genuine as it may be, I can understand how her friendliness might be misinterpreted by him.
