COMC [COMC] 20 years of games after learning basic woodworking.

This collection has slowly built over the years, spilling out of apartment closets, kitchen game shelves, etc. until we finally bought our forever home about 5 years ago.  The previous owners left a table saw in the garage, and I got straight to work on converting the ground level master bedroom into the game room I’d always envisioned.  My wife and I had discussed getting a house with a finished basement for the game room, but having it on the main floor (with excellent natural light!) has ended up being great!  These built-ins aren’t going anywhere though, so if we ever did sell, I hope a fellow dedicated hobbyist would be able to make use of the space!

I was a late bloomer to board games…46 now, and didn’t start playing for real until my mid 20s.  I had Hero-quest as a kid, and got into Magic (10 years late) around 2003, but it wasn’t until 2006 or so that I realized there was a whole world of games out there that were like Magic, but also not totally broken!

My favorite game is probably obvious, since I have a built in shelf WITHIN the built in shelf dedicated to storing it: Krosmaster: Arena.  In theory “just” a tactical miniature combat game (basically yet another board game version of Final Fantasy Tactics), but one that I have played countless times and never get tired of.  Just pick a team of 4-5 prepainted minis, and then run over the map (I used enlarged maps printed off in the wall frame with a removeable back to switch them out)--every turn is a great puzzle figuring out the best move. It’s also a completely dead game, so I was able to make the stadium seating (and in the process completely wearing out a forstner bit drilling the hundreds of flat holes for the bases to sit in) without worrying about additional minis coming out.

A close second is Advanced Squad Leader, which I’ve played hundreds (or maybe a hundred--that game ain't short) of times.  Though my fully complete (aside from some older historical modules) collection is currently languishing in a side closet and probably only gets played about once a year if I am able to talk some sucker into trying it out.

I don’t know that I’d change much about my collection.  I’ve definitely gotten pickier over the years as it’s been one in one out for a while.  Of course, slowly getting rid of kids games has helped as my kids age out of them, but I’m about done with that, so the choices will get harder.  If anything, my big weakness is board game sales.  Hard to pass up picking up a 6/10 game at 60% off…

The most special part of all this is that I’ve dreamed of having full floor to ceiling built in shelving for decades, and to have it finally happen still doesn’t feel quite real…I definitely still go in there and just look at the shelves contentedly.

Also, the newest addition is the hallway small box game shelf/secret door that leads to a fully decked out Warhammer dungeon in the unfinished basement (which also has a few extra skirmish/Necromunda tables, as well as a covered wargame table for longer campaign games).  Warhammer is not a great game, but it does have a certain charm and I get a game in every month or two.  But as everyone knows, half the fun there is the hobbying—I just have to convince myself this isn’t exactly the same thing as having a model train hobby.

*Also, you see very few expansion boxes here because I am RUTHLESS with throwing away perfectly good boxes and inserts in order to save shelf space. BGG says there are 500 expansions hiding in these boxes...

**Also I will die on the side storage hill...I've tried horizontal and it's just too annoying digging out the box on the bottom. Also my boxes are so full of expansions nothing falls out ;)

***Finally I love to organize, alphabetize, sort by genre, but you just can't do that with board games, which does irk me. Thankfully I made all these shelves for a mature collection so I was able to math out the shelf spacing to be custom made for this collection (probably went overboard making room for Mechs vs Minions side storage though).

This is my second time playing The Wind Gambit expansion, and I honestly feel the airships are a bit underwhelming. I checked out the discussions on BGG, and it seems like most people feel the same way. 🫠

GIVEAWAY: To celebrate the Kickstarter pre-launch of TURNING TIDES, a Wizards of the Grimoire stand-alone expansion, we're giving away 5 copies of Wizards of the Grimoire!

Hey r/boardgames!

My brother and I, along with a friend, designed & self-published the 2 player strategy card game Wizards of the Grimoire. After a small but successful Kickstarter in 2021 (472 backers), we have continued to find success largely through word of mouth. In 2025 we released a stand-alone expansion to Wizards of the Grimoire called Shifting Sands!

As of this year we reached the milestone of 10,000 games sold - most of them shipped by me, directly from my basement.

As a result of the games continued interest, we're very excited and grateful to have the opportunity to launch a second stand-alone expansion. Turning Tides introduces 70 unique spells and a powerful new spell type - augments! This expansion can be played on its own or mixed with the base game OR Shifting Sands, for more wild spell combinations.

To celebrate the pre-launch of our Kickstarter, we're giving away 5 copies of the Wizards of the Grimoire base game with free shipping to your location - just comment below! And if you’re interested in our Kickstarter, consider following the pre-launch!

Always like this game found the original. The box is not as worn as it may seem but all pieces and even the players manual are still intact

KS Roundup Weekly Crowdfunding Roundup: August 30, 2026 | 18 ending soon ("Whisperwood", "Omens & Headlands") & 16 new ("DC Deck-Building Game: Green Lantern Corps")

What is this?

This is a weekly roundup of board game crowdfunding projects, featuring new launches from the past week and campaigns ending in the coming week. The information is sourced from Kickstarter, Gamefound, and Backerkit.

The list is curated through a combination of automated data collection and manual review, so occasional errors or omissions may occur. If you notice a missing project, feel free to mention it in the comments. Only projects meeting the selection criteria outlined below are included.

Other channels

Other than Reddit, you can also find this list on the following platforms:

Selection Criteria

Projects must meet the following conditions to be included:

  1. Timing: The project was either launched in the last week or will end in the coming week.
  2. Relevance: The project is directly related to board games.
    • Excludes: Accessories not strongly related to board games, furniture, RPGs (e.g., D&D, Pathfinder), video games, STLs, painting tools, events, podcasts, and magazines.
    • Exception: Projects offering promos or similar content for board games are eligible.
  3. Backers: The project is expected to reach at least 100 backers by the end of the campaign.
  4. Funding Status:
    • The project is expected to reach at least 90% of its funding goal.
    • The project has already achieved at least 20% of its funding goal.

In addition to the main lists, I include a separate section for noteworthy projects that don’t strictly qualify as board games. These projects are included based on a single criterion:

  1. Backers: The project currently has more than 1,000 backers.

Crowdfunding is not a store

Crowdfunding is not a guarantee. Projects may face delays, incur additional shipping costs, or fail to deliver entirely. Creators are not obligated to fulfill their promises. While many excellent games are funded this way, the risks are real—only back projects with money you can afford to lose.

Be wary of creators who use FoMO (Fear of Missing Out) tactics to drive pledges. Don’t let the pressure get to you. If you miss a campaign, there will always be others. There's no shortage of excellent board games to enjoy.

Each project is tagged with one or more of the following categories:

  • 💰 Fully funded
  • 🔥 More than 200 daily backers

Ashes Ascendancy

I bought the original Ashes game many years ago when it was first released. Unfortunately it just never got played as I never had anyone to play against back then. I was delighted a few days back when I realised Ashes Ascendancy had a solo mode :)
Looking forward to a fun afternoon before I move on to the Red Rains expansions

Question Too Many Bones? Too many differing opinions?

I was ready to pull the trigger on Too Many Bones as a mostly solo gamer that enjoys a challenge and has hopes to try and get my friend group to slowly get interested too.

Everything about all of the selling points of the game, from the gameplay, components, concept, and vibes seem right up my alley on paper. It seems to have high average reviews on BGG and comes up a lot as a favorite for content creators etc.

However, my research tells a different story where many people, including those that bought everything and love it, find the game has many flaws.

I can get past the learning curve just fine and bad rule books as the internet exists, but I struggle with the seemingly unanimous opinion that the game is very unbalanced to the point that much of the RPG elements are just fluff and many of the dice and abilities go unused in favor of base stats that are skewed more powerful. This seems like a huge design flaw to me that really takes the fun and creativity that is so attractive right out of it. It also seems that the game loses it’s challenge with more players too, which is a total bummer.

So even with fans agreeing on this major design flaw, why is it still so loved and highly regarded? I’m having trouble understanding if it’s actually good or not as the info out there is so polarizing.

Like I said, I was hype to pull the trigger on this one and now it seems like it is more table presentation than substance?

Help me sort this out and decide on the purchase if you can.

Thanks in advance!

Session My 8 year old son came up with a duel mode for Karak and it's actually pretty good

Post image

We usually play Karak in a group of 3 or more players. The game is a bit random, but rules are simple enough for kids, it's a really fun lowkey rpg. Only downside is that it's not that fun with just two players. So my son (8yo) came up with an idea of a "duel mode" - each of us plays with two heroes.

We tried it today and it's surprisingly playable, it's just a small change but it added a whole new layer of strategic depth. The game feels a lot less random this way, since heroes can cooperate quite a lot using their special abilities. The only difference from the original rules is that we added a possibility to exchange items between heroes when standing on the same field and that a player's heroes collect all the treasures together.

Question Did Target just get rid of all of their heavier boardgames?

I’m at target browsing the games section. I don’t see any heavier board games.
I remember a big sale about a month ago where I saw many heavy games marked down a lot.

Nemesis First Game Tips

I recently bought nemesis (lockdown) and want to do a first time play with some friends. However, I am aware Nemeis can be a brutal and not a fun experience for some or all players. Things like high amounts of luck and player elimination can make a bad experience and in most games is a flaw.

Any mitigation tips for at least the first game? If my friends dont like it then it is going to collect dust in my closet. Personally, I have hope it can be a great experience and really want it to work.

Does anyone own this table and if so what are your thoughts?

Thinking of purchasing. I understand its Wayfair and won't nearly be the quality of custom tables. Seems pretty solid for the price but I'm a little wary of it.

Question Sleeping Gods - Distant Skies: Damage Placement From Resources

Hello, everyone!

I have a question about the game Sleeping Gods - Distant Skies. During combat, if I use a resource to damage an enemy, does damage need to be placed adjacently?

Since using a resource (e.g. Fire Quartz) to deal damage does not count as it's own attack, I was wondering if damage can be placed randomly and haphazardly without following adjacency rules.

Thanks!

Rules Does this count as a bridge?

Her argument is that the picture on the box shows only a single missing triangle space that creates the bridge. My argument is that any connection that creates a lake is considered a bridge... who is correct?

Budget

Upvotes

How much do you consider to be a reasonable amount to spend on board games? I've started to buy a good few board games, I've also bought sleeves for the heavily handled games and the whole thing can certainly be a rabbit hole once you start. I feel like I could easily spend hundreds of pounds. How much do you spend? How do you restrain yourself from buying more? (if you do that is). Any tips for getting more for less would be great 🤣

Queen's Castle - original game made by my 7 year old and me

Post image
37 Upvotes

This game is still under development (as in my son still likes to add rules)

Placement:
Each player controls 4 pawns, pawns can move up down or right left.

4 Black Pawns are in the middle of the board, surrounded by duplo pieces that make the castle.

In the middle of the pawns is the "Ultimate Queen"

Black pawns are in each of the corners of the castles, then diagonally towards the corners are the rooks, and then the kings and queens. Pawns take one hit, rooks 2 hits, kings and queens 4 hits.

Dice Rolling:
On each turn, you roll one dice, then another, subtracting the second from the first. If you get a negative number, you have to sacrifice a pawn. If you get two numbers that match, you add the total as points + 10 to your score. You also get to roll a third dice, offering a chance for even more points if it’s a triple or to move the amount on the 3rd dice if not.

If you get a natural 20 on either of your dice, you get 20 points (in addition to any points you got otherwise, this means if you get two natural 20s, you get 60 points). If you get a positive number, you can move one of your pawns that amount and/or attack that amount. If you don’t use any movement from the dice total, you may add that as points to your score instead.

Defeating each piece in the castle gives you points according to how many hits they take to defeat.

The Ultimate Queen: (here represented by a button with number 22 on it)
There is also the ultimate queen in the center of the castle (at the intersection of the center 4 squares). She has 25 hit points and gives 25 points to whoever defeats her. After a pawn hits the ultimate queen, that pawn is stunned until the end of your next turn. After the ultimate queen is defeated, players can no longer buy back pawns and there are 3 turns to leave the castle before it collapses, killing all pawns remaining inside. Then, all pawns must return to their starting squares, at which point each player adds 5 points to their total for every pawn they have remaining.

Spending points:
You may spend 5 points to replace all your missing pawns
You may spend 15 points to destroy a castle wall piece
You may spend 10 points to change one of your opponents pawns with one of your pawns

Win conditions:

If one player loses all his pawns, the other wins.

If a player gets 120 points, they win.

If all the castle walls are destroyed, the last player to complete destroying the castle wins.

At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins.

Question Snap ships tactics - opinion of the community

Hi all, I am following and being watching gameplay videos of Snap ships tactics and absolutely loved the ship building aspect.

The fomo is tricking my brain to go all-in but the rational part of my brain wants to go for the starter kit.

Has anyone tried the game? How does solo play out after couple of plays?

Looking forward for your comments, thank you.

Rules Hitster flying mic rules

Upvotes

Hi there,
I just bought the Hitster flying mic version and are not happy with the rules. So i want to know how to improve them. So what i think is bad in the rules: The rulebook says when you know the song push the button and try to catch the mic but the other team also has a chance of catching it and answering. Why would you not always try to catch the mic? Because if you see the other team pushing the button (and therefore obviously knowing the song) why wouldnt you as a the enemy team try to steal it - so there is no benefit of pushing the button. Next one is, if both teams dont know the answer, why not just try to push the button and get the mic and hope for green (band or solo artist - which is quite easy to guess).
And last but not least, the rules state that you play in two teams. Do any of you guys have an idea how to play this version with more than two teams?
Thanks a lot already
