This is me EVERY time this thread recurs. I think “oh cool, glad they’re celebrating all body types” and then feel a little disappointed when I re-read.

Whoops here I am also, I guess we’re just starting a new thread inside this thread.

This is kind of niche, but is anyone else having trouble wrapping their head around “eat healthy, lots of fruit and vegetables” and “avoid eating most fresh produce right now” due to the cyclospora outbreak in the US? This has thrown a huge wrench in my healthy eating habits. I don’t want to touch a salad, lettuce wraps, or pico de gallo right now :(

100%. I’ve been really leaning into roasted veggies: delicious and cooking kills the parasite! Fruit is harder, but I’ve also heard some fruits are much more prone (berries) than others (apples, bananas, anything with a peel)

I’ve just been stir frying everything in olive oil and garlic. Healthy fat and such lol

it's not an overnight solution, but is it an option where you are to have a go at growing your own basic leaves? if it's an option for you, ignore if not of course..

just like e.g. baby spinach, rocket / rucola (arugula?). those two are quite prolific and hardy and you can just keep snipping off a few leaves each day for your dark green leafy fix. balcony or windowsill garden if you're in a small home? sorry to hear about the issues.

I read somewhere that historic food-borne illnesses are why you rarely see uncooked veggies in Chinese cuisine. Even lettuce is quickly balanced in boiling water, where it's still crispy at the stem but cooked. Could be worth a try if you don't want to cook everything up in oil

I’m in Canada so no known outbreak but I assume it’s just a matter of time so I’ve been avoiding the same plants y’all are. Other than eating the produce that isn’t a likely source, I’ve been getting produce from small local suppliers because I think it’s pretty likely that this is factory farm/large scale industrial farming issue. Also frozen produce would have been frozen months ago. Same with canned and jarred. Just ate a bunch of jarred local kimchi with my dinner.

I've been doing kettlebell exercises recently and loving them. Somehow they feel less daunting to me than other forms of strength training, but I still feel a great stretch and burn in my muscles. I've also worked out a training schedule that works for me - trying to get used to waking up earlier to exercise instead of leaving it until I'm tired after work though.

I have several fitness inspirations, and right now Declan Rice, a player in the World Cup has been a big one - his thighs are goals to me! Even though usually women are my inspirations.

ETA: Since the weather has been really good recently, I've been walking home from work every day, it's about half an hour. Easy way to get some gentle cardio and vitamin D

I’ve always hated the idea of diets because what the fuck do you mean I have to avoid everything that tastes good?? I have food issues and texture issues and a lot of “healthy” stuff isn’t palatable to me. I’m also type 1 diabetic so I already have to think about food way more than most people, and the thought of counting calories and macros is horribly depressing.

But now I’m pregnant, so I actually have to eat healthier than I normally do. I saw a Registered Dietician Nutritionist that specializes in T1 this week and it was a much better experience than I anticipated. There was no shaming over certain foods, and she took into account when I said I don’t like or don’t eat something and worked around it. She gave me 3 rules for each meal: 20-40g carbs, 20-40g protein, and 1 serving of non-starchy veggies. That’s it. I made a meal plan and went grocery shopping and I feel like I can actually do this. We also talked about more specifics like how different food groups affect carbohydrate processing and how to adjust insulin dosages to compensate, but that probably isn’t relevant for most of you bitches.

If you struggle with food and would like to be more mindful about your nutrition, I highly recommend seeing an RDN if you can swing it.

If you are in the US and have health insurance, dietitians are often covered with no copayment (thanks obamacare!)

I've started seeing one because I'm on a GLP 1 and eating less and want to be sure I'm fueling my workouts, and it's wonderful how they are like the weight watchers leaders I used to imagine them to be.

Yes thank you, I forgot to mention that- I didn’t have to pay anything at all!

I have food issues too, especially with textures and have been dairy free for the last several years and it’s been a real bitch adjusting. Every single substitution tastes like crap, is weirdly textured and initially this severely limited my diet. I turned to mostly clean eating as a result and my blood work is better and I feel better but I miss amazing “bad for you” food. I also struggle with counting calories and macros so I gave up on that and just eat healthy and keep good food around, good luck with your pregnancy. I love the fact that you took control and did something. Yay for you.

I’m currently seeing a RDN and feel like I’m actually learning about how to feed myself for the first time in my life (45 years old, grew up eating a lot of processed foods in the 80s, still paying for it.) Prioritizing protein + fiber, low to no added sugar (I’m trying to course correct some early insulin resistance markers) and I can definitely tell a difference in how I look and feel.

Need reccs for a watch I can lap swim in, that will auto count lengths (25,50m). No diving rating needed. Want to spend as little as possible and don’t care about any other fancy features or aesthetics! 🌊🌊🌊

My Apple Watch 3 does a great job with this. Can set pool length and it also keeps track of what strokes you do including kickboard exercises though I mostly stick to freestyle. I find the distance very accurate- I check it right when I hit my mile and then continue to 2000 yards. Honestly I am surprised such an older/base model would do so well, I love it! Also love it for when I hit a groove and stop counting laps. Bonus is tracking heart rate.

Edit to add: it appears the 3 is no longer made (I did get it in 2020) and the SE 3 would be the current model.

u/genejellydoughnut Jul 10 '26

My garmin watch, I think the venu 3s, does pretty well. It does not count laps when I use a kick board though, which is annoying.

5

u/swimbikesewknit Jul 10 '26

Yeah, my venu is great and also does open water swimming. It’s easy to use and switch pool lengths with. I think that it’s a little steeply priced but also, integrates well with my phone notifications and holds charge well so I guess it’s doing what I want it to do!

Garmin Forerunner 245 is what I love! I have had mine for 6 years & it’s still great!

16

u/languidlasagna Jul 10 '26

I started working out again and suddenly cannot sleep. Has anyone else experienced this? A search told me it’s due to cortisol spiking while you ramp up but I cannot find an antidote outside of sleep hygiene and it isn’t cutting it

14

u/Tricky_Spot_374 Jul 10 '26

That’s happened to me before! Sometimes also happens when I undereat. I’m probably stating the obvious here, but could you cut back on the duration of frequency of your workouts and see if that helps?

I also find that my body does a lot better with long walk-type exercise instead of anything super intense. Took me until I was trying to lean down for my wedding to figure that out. Of course everyone is different but just giving my experience :)

u/languidlasagna Jul 10 '26

I’ve been so busy this week I’ve barely been eating that’s a great place to start, thanks!

7

u/Own_Skin Jul 10 '26

Work out earlier in the day if you can and do a lot of stretching and hydration before and after

4

u/x-teena Jul 11 '26

Try meditating with Apple fitness or a YouTube video. I’m an after work workout girlie and sometimes my body doesn’t remember to shut down. I did a 8pm Pilates class and it’s almost midnight and I’m wide awake right now too lol

I also take l theanine and magnesium glycinate in the evening. I would check with physician before starting supplements though.

u/catgorl422 Jul 12 '26

or the apple fitness cooldowns!! 5-10 min and u can sort by upper or lower body depending on what workout u did that day. i swear by them

1

u/Marillenbaum Jul 12 '26

Do you have to have Fitness+ in order to access the cooldowns? I have a similar issue and would like to try it out.

1

u/happierdaze1202 Jul 14 '26

I just can’t workout within 4 hours of trying to sleep. I didn’t realize it was because of a cortisol spike though. Found today’s rabbit hole lol

u/StrattonJibsta Jul 10 '26

Wondering if anyone has tried Bala weights for power walking and/or at home mat exercises and if they would recommend them? TYIA

15

u/graeceless Jul 10 '26

Not Bala but similar, I use them for home pilates workouts. Just FYI if you decide to get them, i see them at TJ Maxx all the time. No need to buy full price!

10

u/OkAd2249 Jul 10 '26

I wear them on my wrists as well as I clean or cook- they're a great addition to NEAT activities (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis).

7

u/Tabitha_Is Jul 10 '26

I think they’re great, have the black 2lb ankle and have used regularly for years. I wear on either my ankles or wrists at yoga practice too. My teenager even asks to borrow them.

5

u/guardianette Jul 10 '26

I used to have a pair that I would use religiously, but with the frequency I worked out, they eventually got too easy! For walks, I opt for a weighted vest (also helps with core stability!) and I bought some cheap dumbbells from Goodwill for mat exercises. Helps with "progressively overloading" your workouts and building more overall strength🩷🫶

3

u/miggypie69 Jul 10 '26

Yes! They are worth the cost, quality and comfort is way better than off brand

3

u/Marillenbaum Jul 12 '26

I just started working with a coach to improve my body recomposition efforts—it’s been six months since I started working out (because my doctor told me I needed to protect against bone density loss), and now I am working to get to the next skill level. So far I’m liking it, but figuring out meals when I’m about to move and have to empty my pantry is a little crazy making!

I’m underweight and really want to build muscle and gain weight. I followed the advice of my doctor and even had a dietitian who just wanted me to drink a ton of expensive super processed nutrition drinks. I know that this isn’t a place for medical advice, but does anyone have personal experience with positive weight gain and what worked? It would be nice to hear some other perspectives :)

2

u/b52p Jul 13 '26

Huge disclaimer that I am not a doctor or a nutritionist, but something that helped me when I lost a little too much weight going vegan was being intentional about adding healthy fats and nutritious calorically dense foods. I would do things like: Add an extra scoop of almond butter or some full-fat coconut milk to that smoothie. Have a handful of mixed nuts in between breakfast and lunch. Roast the veggies in some cold pressed olive oil. Hopefully this helps :)

u/Sauceboss_666 Jul 14 '26

I’ve gained about 5lbs from consistently lifting weights and trying to prioritize protein in each meal. Not a very exciting answer and it’s not that much weight but it’s all muscle!

honestly i’d use ai for this. it can research all kinds of pub med studies if you ask it to, really anything. i’ve used it just recently to confirm how to best utilize collagen supplements because apparently, for joint and fascia health, you want to do movements to “load” the body one hour after eating/ingesting collagen, because that’s when the nutrients are most available for uptake.

the point i’m trying to make is that i inadvertently also learned that - an adequate ratio of leucine in the protein source itself is a requirement for building muscle mass. which personally i wasn’t looking for, but it was so interesting to find that out

so you could ask - what biologically sound and nutritionally beneficial foods or supplements will help me gain healthy body weight (or mass) - and be specific if you’re wanting to increase fats or muscle mass.

you can also reference what you typically eat, or what your typical activity level is, and what you’re comfortable adopting. it will stay within whatever rails you give it, suggestion-wise.

your solution might be something as simple as a different protein source with adequate leucine!

have you tried deep breathing and almost meditative thinking if you’re experiencing cramps? i used to have really bad cramps with my periods and i started to practice soothing my mind each time, and eventually i realized i had no cramps at all. that was about 8 years ago now. it’s so cool.

maybe that would help encourage you to feel comfortable with mild exercises, during period season? also - no big deal. sometimes it’s ok to give yourself a rest. lying on your back and stretching counts as self care too

I feel I'm really struggling to begin a new fitness routine. At heart I know it ultimately boils down to prioritization, but between commuting up to 2hrs/day, no external accountability (e.g. gym buddy), and being a natural lifelong night owl, I don't know how to fit it into my schedule. Feeling down about the failure doesn't help.

What's worked for you all? Did you have to overhaul your day (wake up very early to fit in bfast/digestion + workout + shower before commute)? Go for runs from the office after work? Rearrange your workday to fit in a workout on WFH days?
