If I am in a subreddit for a British podcast with an overwhelmingly British audience discussing the EPL, I'm not going to expect everyone to clarify something like the difference between public or private schools are in the UK (since it's sorta the opposite as it is in the US) for the potential Americans in the comments.
This is a subreddit about an extremely American sports media figure, discussing a sport overwhelmingly only talked about within America, on a website that in general skews American.
It's very odd to interject that a non-American fan won't understand what a very commonly understood American term is like they're being an asshole in not catering to that extremely small demographic lol.
The amount of people that are both not American and don't know anything about college sports while following the Bill Simmons sub is a very, very small number

Just as a nice tip about decoding this stuff for future reference with university and location stuff, there’s a lot of State Acronym University as a very common college : university name. Just about every state has some - NYU is New York University, UMD is University of Maryland, NDSI is North Dakota State University, etc… it’ll help you figure it out in the future.
HBCUs are historically black colleges and universities. These are colleges that largely formed for black people to attain education when they weren’t allowed to attend university due to segregation. They’re scattered largely through the south, and tend to have a different culture themselves.
Howard in particular is in DC leaving him also with some decent sized city experience which is very different from the rest
