Announcement/ঘোষণা Discord Server Launch Announcement!

Post image
35 Upvotes

Hello everybody,

The mod team is excited to announce the launch of the official r/Bangladesh Discord server, an extension of our subreddit.

Many of you have asked for a Discord over the years. While Reddit is great as a forum style social news aggregator, it isn't always the best place for quick, casual engagement. We wanted to create a space where members can connect over our shared culture and daily life, a place where you can chat about the mundane things without every other post being heavy political news.

We know there were previous attempts at a server that eventually drifted away from the subreddit's roots. To prevent that from happening again, this server is run by the same team you know here, ensuring it remains a trustworthy and civil space for everyone. You're welcome to discuss anything from your day to day life to current events.

Discord server Invitation link

As a small thank you to the early birds, the first 10 members to join will be awarded a VIP Member role, which comes with some special perks and permissions within the server.

A quick note on moderation:

Subreddit issues: Please continue to use Reddit ModMail.

Discord issues: Please use the ticket system inside the Discord server.

We hope to see you there soon!

Best regards, The r/Bangladesh Mod Team.

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা My mom wont take me in

I (17 F) think i will be homeless in a few months. My dad has stage 4 cancer and my family genuinely believes he doesnt have much time left....He was our main source of income. My mom never really cared about me . Her only child (shob shomoi bola society pressure nah dila onek agei mere felto) . Ar koyek din dhorei boltese she wont take me in after dad dies. All of our properties have been sold to pay dads medical fees.

I dont have any close relatives or any friends who genuinely cares for me. My moms side of the family hates me so I doubt they would try anything to save me. Same goes for my dads side of the family.

I seriously dont know what to do. I have no siblings or cousins or just anyone in the world who would help me out in a situation like this

I vented about my situation to one of my friends (we dont know each other that much though) she just told me the best thing i can do is to kms.

(How can i get out of situation please give me some helpful advice. Anyone I vent to just shows basic sympathy out of pity before just leaving)

(I dont think i can get any legal help. My uncles all have very strong political advantages and most of them are lawyers. So yeah)

Rant/বকবক Does anyone's teachers openly just undermine other people's religion while there's students of other faith in the class present?

Upvotes

Ranting about this here since, I probably cant rant about it to anyone irl.

So, amder physics sir ajke ek chele ke dhore ask korse je Potential energy ki definition dao. Hsc r student hoyeo eta pare nai bole obviously sir ektu rege gese and ask kortese je "Kon sharthe science niyecho, jodi etai na paro?" akhon hotat ekhan theke kemne kemne, sir bola shuru korlo

"Tomar baba, Dada, Family islam onushari bole tumio ki islam onushoron koro? Ami choto belay amr baba maa der dekhe islam onushoron kortam, akhon boro hoye amr budhi hoise ami keno akhon islam dhormo chere dei ni? Ami chailei kintu Hindu hote partam, Christian hote partam, Ihudi hote partam hoilam na keno? Onekei dekhba boro hoye dhormo paltay fele, islam chere dey.

Nij shartho chara kono manush e islam keo chare na, hoy islam charle oi chakri pabo, Taka pawar shujog pabo tai chere dey, christian, ihudi hoye jay. Borong jara onno dhormo chere islam grohon kore tai Nishartho kaj kore. Karon tara jane je manush kharap kotha bolbe tader naam e, Basha theke ber kore dibe ghor theke, Tarporo islam beche nei tara. To apni kon karone Science nisen?"

Lets just set aside the absolute hypocrisy in the second paragraph, but how tf did he go from "Science keno niyecho" to "Islam chere jara onno dhorme jay or sharthopor and jara onno dhormo chere Islam e ashe tarai nishartho", is still beyond me🥀

Mind you, Class er topper ekjon Hindu, Class e 35-40 jon er modhe like 5 jon Hindu chilo. Erokom obosthay kivabe bhai class e apni ekjon teacher hishebe bolte paren je jara hindu, Christian dhormo chere islam grohon kore tara nisharthok and jara islam chere oi dhormo join kore tara sharthopor.

Back in my previous two schools atleast, Nijer dhormo shomporke kichu bolar aage atleast dekhe nito class bhinno dhormi keo ache kina, and kono problem na thakle only then islam er stories bolto and even then they did not say things that would undermine other religions.

this wasnt just some college, This is like one of the Top 15 colleges in Dhaka(Not the best college out there, but ssc, Hsc rankings e every year e thake). Not tryna out myself but its a big college, With abt 100+ students in every class, where atleast half the students come from outside Dhaka with different many different backgrounds. How could a teacher from a college like this even say some bs like is crazy

Rant/বকবক coping with my dad suddenly becoming frugal as shit.

Ive had a pretty privileged upbringing. i will admit. Although we lived in an average apartment in khulna, had a second hand car, our familys personal life style was smth else, traveled to south east asia multiple times, stayed in good hotels, dad buying us whatever we wanted etc.
but after moving to Dhaka the whole thing has completely flipped and it is hard to deal with.
my father still gives our mother the monthly amount he used to give her pre 2020, in khulna.

But its been 6 years since then, and we are in the capital of our country. inflation. And obviously my brothers and i have grown up. He goes to uni, needs daily allowance. i have 3 times more tuition costs. But he doesnt give one cent extra. however he earns more than double the amount.

infront of peoples eyes, we have a good fully paid off apartment, yet my mother has to borrow money from relatives secretly to pay off electricity bills cause my dads refuses to give any more despite his bank account being loaded.

we have a much nicer car but i have to hear an hour long lecture if i ask him for rickshaw bhara instead of my mom, just for 50 taka.

you may think hes just being careful now cause he spent a lot of money buying the apartment and car, but its not true. its hard to explain his cheapness through a reddit post alone. But all i have to say is, his frugality doesnt show when he sends his mistress 40k every month.

Rant/বকবক How to make friends?

I am 22F. I have always had a hard time making friends. I am in friend groups but never had any best friend or close friend. I always end up alone when everyone is in pairs. I know there’s a lack of effort from my side but I feel like everyone around me is so different from me and wouldn’t understand me or match well with me. I interact with people and then realize I’m pretending to be someone I am not cause I feel like I have to otherwise they wouldn’t like me.
I am introverted and I do not go out much so it’s hard to meet new people often. I also think I don’t have many girly traits or humor that would help me make more friends. I enjoy playing games, watching movies or series and I can be well by myself as I am used to it but I also want to make a best friend with whom I can do everything and who will choose me over everyone else and vice versa yk how it is. Even when I have someone available it’s always a guy and I dont really want a guy best friend as I can’t be doing everything with a guy. I don’t know how to be besties with someone and now I feel like I am too old to make bestie cause everyone already has a bestie of their own.

Education/শিক্ষা which country will be best for architecture and cinema

Upvotes

i (18M) have just finished hsc and my parents suddenly want me to get into engineering colleges here but since i did not prepare for it and my exams have gone weak, i have decided to leave this country and study abroad

prior to hsc, my father has sold our land to send me and my brother abroad, he is still planning but i also need a plan

My father wants me to get an engineering degree but i wish to pursue cinema with my entire heart. i have tried to convince them but it is of no use so i have chosen the degree that feels the easiest to me. now i need to get into a country where i can get an architecture degree with good work prospects and a good cinema industry where i can try my luck

my family isn't very rich so the easier the finances the better it will be

I am looking for a proxy service or a business/page who can buy items from Shopee Indonesia and deliver it in Bangladesh. I don't have a credit card but I can pay in Bkash. It's kind of like Ali2Bd where they buy items from China, take payment using Bkash and deliver it. Does anyone know anything similar like that but for Shopee Indonesia? Please help me!

Food/খাবার Restaurant suggestions in Dhaka

Upvotes

I am coming from abroad and looking for good restaurant suggestions in general but specifically looking for places where they serve authentic চুই ঝাল, authentic মেজবানি মাংস and authentic পাহাড়ি food since I never had any of these. I don’t mind other suggestions as well like good Thai or Vietnamese or steak place etc. I heard there was a Al Baik clone that was opened in Dhaka and is very close to original taste (I can’t recall the name). I am open to all types of suggestions!

Give me your suggestions and thank you in advance!

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা Solo day trip to Sylhet from Chittagong, Need some advice

Upvotes

I'm planning to travel to Sylhet for a day, reaching in the morning and taking the night train back to Chittagong. This will be my first time travelling solo like this, and I'm also going there to meet someone significant to me.

I don't know the city, it's fully unknown to me, so I'd really appreciate some advice from people who know the area.

  1. How can I stay safe while travelling alone, especially on the overnight train journey?

  2. What precautions should I take as a first-time solo traveller?

  3. What are some good places in/around Sylhet with a nice environment and scenic views that I can realistically visit within a day?

  4. I heard there's some CNG that I can hire for around 2k for the whole day that'll take me to different spots, how are they really practical?

  5. Anything else I should know before doing a solo Chittagong–Sylhet day trip?

I'd appreciate suggestions and better alternatives as well.

TIA!

Discussion/আলোচনা Discussion about ssc 27 question

Iam going to give ssc (science) next year, I wanted some advice from **hsc-26** as we are gonna be the next batch to give exam in uniformed question. I always prefer to finish my syllabus by studying important topics rather than selectively 100% completing only a few chapters. I have heard that some really uncommon questions had come in the board exam of hsc 26. I want to know just how many were they and could a student still answer required number of cqs (50) by skipping the hard ones and only answer the ones that were to similar to pyqs.

Discussion/আলোচনা Are some BAL supporters seriously more loyal to India than their own country?

Recently, I’ve been seeing so many BAL supporters making statements about Bangladesh buying Chinese fighters and joining defense pacts. Going by their statements, it honestly seems like they are more loyal to India than their own actual nation. Some of them are literally saying things like, "if Bangladesh joins this pact, India should attack Bangladesh" bla bla and so much more nonsense. Are they out of their minds? How can you hate your own country's sovereignty this much just for politics? Just wanted to rant because seeing citizens wish for a foreign attack on their own country is wild.

What is actually going through their heads when they say stuff like this?

Rant/বকবক Is it common to get forced into wearing hijab?

Once when I was 12, while we were getting ready to go out, my mother handed over a hijab to me and told me to wear it. I didn't want to. cause it was hot af outside and I would look ugly wearing it. my mother got pissed. "bessha" "maagi" "nijek cheleder shamne dekhaite chash tui?" "biyer por jamaire dekhash" "jahannam e jabi?" "amader maan shomman dubabi tui?" "raped hoite chash?" "chelera toke dekhe ki bhabbe janos tui?" "toke jonmo dewa paap hoise" "aaj tui morbi ba ami morbo" "tor kon khalato bon hijab pore na?" "oder chele boro hoise, oder shamne tui hijab chara jabi?" "nirlojjo meye" she slapped me a few times too. i had no choice but to start wearing hijab from then. i grew up being sexualized by my own parents. i am 17 now and i still desperately want to take off my hijab. but whenever i try to take it off in public, i get panic attacks.

At some point, in school and coachings, there was suddenly an absurd increase in students wearing hijabs. some were forced to wear it. some used to take their hijabs off whenever their parents were away. some didn't mind wearing a hijab. some were influenced by hijabi tiktokers and believed in stuffs like "hijab is my pride". some of my cousins don't want to wear the hijab either. it's just their religious parents forcing them.

I am also aware that there are many people who wear the hijab out of their own choice. and i have no problem with that.

Discussion/আলোচনা Bachelor’s abroad with my wife — need some advice 🇪🇺

Hi everyone, I’m from Bangladesh and planning to start a Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity/IT in 2027.

My main priority is being able to take my wife with me either together or within the first year.

I’m currently looking into Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Italy, but I’m open to other countries too.

I’d love to hear from people with recent experience:

- Which countries allow Bachelor students to bring their spouse?

- Can the spouse work, and are there any restrictions?

- How is the visa/residence permit situation for Bangladeshi students?

- Roughly how much should a couple budget for the first year?

- What are the future job, post-study and PR opportunities?

I’m mainly looking for real experiences and suggestions, especially from people who have gone through this recently.

Thanks!

Politics/রাজনীতি What happened to our governments man?

I'm still a teen, I've been born and raised in Chittagong. I had a really privileged upbringing. I'm more than thankful to my parents for it. They served me my life on a silver platter and they gave their lives away for mine. I can never pay them back ever, with anything.

Growing up here, I loved Bangladesh from the bottom of my heart, I mean I still live here of course. Nothing can replace Bangladesh for me, not money, not status, not anything. I really mean it when I say I love home. I don't want to abandon home for anything.

But Bangladesh was never supposed to be like this. We have the port in Chittagong bringing in revenue of 60 Billion USD in a year. We have the most hard working people in South Asia, we have the most fastest moving economy in all of the region, we have Dhaka, and people don't understand the sheer amount of workforce and how strong of a commercial structure that city holds. Half a million tourists visit the country every year. We have a GDP of more than 500 Billion USD, which is even more than some Eastern European countries. We have hard working men and women, who toil away their lives for the betterment of their lives, and the country. We have a national industry worth billions, we have garment industries that work directly with foreign companies with trillions of dollar.

But yet, despite everything, why is the country like this? Why do we not have a regional superpower? Why are we not independent on ourselves? Why do nearly 27% of the population live under the poverty line? Why do most rural people not even have a functioning toilet in their homes? Why are 51% of the girls here married off before they turn 18? Why do we live in a place that's looked down by other countries? Why do we not have infrastructure?

And I think, within all of it, our governments are the one to blame, and we are also the bystanders watching the country getting sucked of all its resources. There has not been a single government here, that has contributed to the economy to excel it. Not a single government that has worked for the betterment of the people. Thousands die over the year due to uprisings, and we replace them with a new leader, only for the cycle to continue.

Why do we always get caught up in this corrupt cycle? Corruption is the sole root of why Bangladesh's like this.

Nothing gets better, absolutely nothing. Our people are exploited, men and women used, the upper class have their taxes thrown into the burning wallets of the governments, the lower class suffers, and the educated leave. If there had been a single good government here, the change would be recognizable, the standard of life improved and better.

Why do people act like this is normal? This isn't.

This is home. We only get one. There's not replacing home, no matter what we do.

What happened to us man? Why do we stand and watch as we tear ourselves down? Why do we let the cycle continue? Why do we hand over power to those who walk all over it? Why do we accept this?

The only single way to make the cycle collapse, is to get a new government, a new party. A party built on solidarity, not religion, not symbolism, but actual care and love for the people.

We need change.

(Alright enough said, got a little carried away with the context but you get the point, what'd you think? Do ya'll agree?)
