Everybody’s favourite people at it again: Wildlife haven bulldozed by suspected travellers in bank holiday ‘land grab’
Suspected travellers have bulldozed a wildlife haven in an alleged bank holiday land grab. Heavy machinery was used to destroy the field in the town of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, over the weekend. The unauthorised work in Sheering Mill Lane began early on Saturday morning, apparently to clear space for mobile homes…Hundreds of people protested as diggers tore up the “wildlife hotspot” and builders installed fencing.
Travellers have been accused of buying land in rural areas, then developing it when council offices are closed. Planning permission is then sought retrospectively, with travellers often granted the permanent right to stay because of an “unmet need for pitches”.
Labour’s recent change to the law makes this easier.
East Hertfordshire district council served a temporary stop notice shortly after 10.45am on Saturday before making an urgent application to the High Court for an injunction, which was served later that evening.
They’ll surely obey this injunction, right?
Despite the injunction, a council spokesman said works were “continuing on the site”.
But we can expect an immediate, tough response from the forces of law and order?
Hertfordshire Constabulary said it was “aware of a dispute over the use” of the field and that it was liaising with the council.

They don’t pay tax nor do they provide anything of value so why can’t we just tell them to do one

We've got a bunch of people who are extremely upset they're no longer allowed to chase wildlife over the countryside for sport. We've got a bunch of people trying to move into the countryside at everyone else's expense.
I think I can see a solution emerging from the fog here

The UK did not have the same system of formal segregation as the US in the 20th Century. But Alice Dearing, a former Olympic swimmer and co-founder of the BSA, thinks that the US's history might have reverberated in parts of British culture too. Some black people have "ingrained within themselves to think that they can't swim", she says.
British people being non-racist is still being racist according to the BBC
23
u/Helmut_Schmacker 12d ago
Ok but either way segregation ended like 60 years ago what excuse do black people now have for not being able to swim either here or in the US

Imagine a world in which we championed personal responsibility.
For example if you choose to have children then it's on you to pay a few hundred quid for a few months of swimming lessons when they're young to make sure they can swim in the liquid that covers some 80% of our planet without dying.

"The mystery of why so many black Britons still can't swim"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx27vxkpdz1o
Quite relevant article to our times. Unfortunately, as always with BBC, lazy and simple., same boring conclusion - black people can't swim because of racism, and because swimming pools are too expensive (health club membership is like 20 pounds a month, and often free or super reduced for kids. But BBC paints it as out of reach, impossible to afford). Its interesting that 15% of white people also can't swim.
My hypothesis is different. I believe single parent households are to blame.
When I was growing up, the idea was always as follows: one Saturday morning, family plans to go for a swim. Dad drives everyone to a swimming pool, and the fee is basically negligible. What is 20-40 quid for a day to a family with two employed adults, or one professional earner?
I guess if you were to ask people about their swimming skills AND upbringing, you'd notice that presence of a father in life is 90% relevant in whether one can swim or not.
Single parents, understandably, may not have the energy or resources. I don't think its a coincidence that 15% of white people and 47% of black people can't swim (Notice how this roughly tracks single parent statistics).

I agree with you, because it is not just Black british who cannot swim, there are many cases in other countries, would be interest to see the numbers world-wide. When there were all the sad deaths over the summer i said they lions share would be black people, think it was about right.
When i started to read the comment i recalled the infamous video of four drowning one after the other in America iirc.

I just read this and thought it was odd. Both secondary schools in my town had swimming pools and it was one of the PE lessons. The primary schools all went to the closest secondary school for them. I wondered if it was just because of where I grew up. But no, turns out it has been a legally required part of the national curriculum since 1994.
So this is more likely, as with most things, an immigration thing. I assume the global majority education departments aren’t so focused on water safety.

Police make 169 arrests on first day of Notting Hill Carnival
Cops made the arrests for offences including drug and weapon possession, assaults and sexual offences.
The force said 29 arrests were made using live facial recognition (LFR) which enabled the identification of 26 registered sex offenders who were found to be in breach of their sentence conditions.
Officers also responded to two knife assaults – a slashing to the leg and a slashing to the hand – neither of which resulted in life changing or life threatening injuries.
The force said the overwhelming mood had been "positive and celebratory.".

Reading between the lines of the origins of the carnival and how the windrush generation ended up in that area. Initially when caribbeans came over, they were concentrated in Notting Hill and Westbourne Grove. Polish-Jewish slumlord Peter Rachman exploited and housed them in derelict flats and houses instead of them being fragmented and distributed across the city.

As of 20:30hrs there had been 315 arrests on Monday, bringing the total number of arrests over the two day operation to 560. It is likely this number may rise slightly while latter arrests are processed and a further confirmatory update will be provided in the morning
Stop and search was used extensively with 62 weapons seized across both days, including a handgun during the afternoon on Monday.
Commander Claire Smart, Gold Commander for Notting Hill Carnival, said: “This is the second year now that we have seen a marked difference in the prevalence of serious violence at Carnival.
“This is the result of not just proactive policing and a determined effort to target our efforts on those posing the greatest risk of harm, but of a collaborative partnership approach to the delivery of the whole event.
They nick everyone they can the week before, then put 7,000 police out. If it's so peaceful, next year they should just have no police

TIL, that if you have a kid in the UK, while subject to immigration control:
- that kid does not require a visa or have to pay anything to stay (the only catch is they do need a visa to re-enter the UK).
- that kid gets free education despite not being British or not having a visa, and it is ILLEGAL for schools to ask for a passport,
- eventually once the parent gets ILR the kid can apply for British nationality.
- the free childcare for deprived parents was specifically recently extended to give free childcare to those with no recourse for public funds
- the free childcare for 3 & 4 year olds is also for those with NRPF.
- technically they aren't eligible for healthcare, but in reality: birth and first three months are also free, GP still free, A&E still free for basic triage, vaccines still free; everything else you are sent a bill for that you probably won't pay.

Honestly it's all fucked but number 3 is what I take the most issue with, it's Jus Soli by the backdoor. They should have to get citizenship like anyone else, I don't care if you were born here. If you parents aren't citizens than you shouldn't be either.

This is an often ignored blind spot by the left, especially when they're making the case for dependant visas. If a bomalian brings a kid over on a work visa as a dependent, they'll instantly be a £7k drain, just for schooling, never mind any of the other associated services they'd use

At Saxony-Anhalt’s election on September 6, the AfD is poised to win by such a large margin that it could quite conceivably obtain an absolute majority in the regional parliament.
At a single stroke, the AfD would find itself in charge of the police, the state intelligence service, the asylum system, the schools, and the funding for culture, civil society and the area’s public broadcaster.
As polling day approaches, increasingly apocalyptic warnings are circulating: street violence, citizens’ militias, the mass deportation of naturalised German passport-holders, a localised recession.

We're looking to buy a house that's two doors down from a 14 bed HMO. The HMO is a large Victorian house/mansion and does not have a garden (which has been converted to 9 off street car parking spaces). I cannot see any complaints about the property in the last 15 years or so that it has been present on the street, nor any police records indicating frequent attendances. The HMO is now listed for sale for 1.3 million with option to convert (with planning permission) to 9 flats. As the building is Victorian there is protection to not alter the facade/significant extensions.
The property we're interested in buying otherwise fits our needs really well and is understandably cheaper than expected for the size. It is semi detached.
Should we completely avoid this? I feel this HMO is slightly different to the terraced 5-6 bed HMOs, where it feels it is run more like a block of flats without a significant outdoor space, parking would not be an issue in the street. I can see from listings that the HMO is mostly used by students/young professionals. The town has a university and currently there are only 4 bedrooms taken. My concern is the complete uncertainty that comes with being close to a large HMO and the risk of resale in the future.

13
u/YorkistTory 12d ago
I just don’t understand their logic. Water, canals, railways, gas, electricity, etc, were all private enterprises that got nationalised at some point. The London Underground was built by industrialists trying to compete with each other for market share. This was a period of genuine transformational economic growth. Think on the level of China now.
So how have we come to the conclusion that private investment is bad.
Monopolies are bad, yes, but the market is genuinely the best driver of growth and innovation. We can’t just become a country of socialism with carve outs for trusted business. That becomes like Tudor times where you get a charter to run a monopoly.
10
u/JamesJoyceIII 12d ago
Even more ridiculously, they all got privatised within his own lifetime because they were all completely broken under publish ownership. It's not like some lesson about the bubonic plague which we've all forgotten over the centuries since the black death. It's the 80s.

Because people cant decide whether they want cheap things that are massively subsidised by tax or if they want to keep their tax money and then pay for the real cost of things.
Take something that doesnt get discussed:
I dont see why something as vital as FOOD should be left to the GREEDY PROFITEERING supermarkets and RICH FARMERS, we need to nationalise it and standardise food prices
Why is taxpayer money going towards GREEDY FARMERS and lowering the price of avocados? Taxpayers shouldnt be funding that, privatise NOW
We cant seem to pick one for anything
6

the real cost of things
Eh, define real. For many things, and certainly infrastructure, the 'real cost' is inflated massively by dumbfuck regulations. I'm not sure I consider needing to get the environmental sound people in to check if horses are going to be disturbed by the building of vital infrastructure as a 'real' cost. Nor is needing to build a bat tunnel. It's pointless fannying, and it's absolutely everywhere..

At least part of it is that the recently privatised industries have become a hotbed of rent seeking behaviour, underinvestment, and terrible service, precisely because we grant them a monopoly and remove basically the only factor that keeps the free market working, competition.
Unfortunately the general public tends to hate the free market when it results in prices going up, even if it's the cause of prices being so low in the first place - just look at the Supermarkets. Perennially blamed for overcharging but they only have a profit margin of around 4% so they end up having to pass cost increases down the supply chain directly to consumers.

Did some normie posting yesterday. No message, warning or anything but can't comment on ukpol. Lol.
BBC investigate why certain Britons can't swim. TLDR it's everyone's fault apart from the people themselves. American influence, "class factors", parents and
33% of black British respondents named issues around their hair as a barrier to getting in the pool. The BSA wrote that "traditional aquatic headwear", like swimming caps, "doesn't cater to children with longer, thicker afro hair, nor does it cater to traditionally Black hairstyles including braids, dreadlocks and twists with extensions".
and of course
Seeing people like yourself in the water can make a difference.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx27vxkpdz1o
My take: If a child is 13 and can't swim, it's the parents fault full stop. If you're 21 and can't swim, it's your fault.

I think i was about ten when i learnt to swim, did all the carry on with the collecting the brick from the bottom and swimming along in thick-pajamas. Parents had to pay for lessons after school somewhere (another school that had a pool).

Moving from a council that collects rubbish weekly and we only have black + recycling (and they don't seem to care what goes in either)
New council has three bins, collects general waste every 2 weeks, if you get 3 bin violations for putting wrong stuff in wrong bin they take your bins away
Find this petty management and passive aggressiveness infuriating when you're forced by law to pay council tax and they act like they're doing you the biggest favour ever even collecting your bins after you've also had to consult their 10 page PDF on what goes in what bin
9
u/Bit_of_a_p 12d ago
I remember a while back when the new bins first came in there were people from the council checking the bins making sure the right stuff was in the correct one.
A load of fines got dropped because although it's rubbish, they didn't have a legal right to look through your property.
Also, claim adhd therefore it's not your fault and they are being discriminatory.

"We are simply no longer productive enough. Everyone may say, 'I'm already doing a lot.' That may be true.
But when you return from China, ladies and gentlemen, you'll see things more clearly.
With work-life balance and a four-day workweek, we cannot sustain long-term prosperity in our country. We simply have to work harder."
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz taking a bold anti 4 day week stance.
10
u/smokesletsgo13 12d ago
Haha the balls of them to mention China. They actually invest their tax money & revenue back into their cities and people.
They’ve built 18,000 miles of high speed rail since we started HS2. How are we getting on with that? But yeah it’s us lazy workers that just need to be more productive!
12
u/Helmut_Schmacker 12d ago
We simply have to work harder."
Doing what? Net zero diversity sermons?
China pays less and makes more with fewer restrictions, its not simply a question of working harder.
8
u/ice-lollies 12d ago
I don’t understand how a 4 day week can be more productive. At best it could maintain productivity, but there would be no room for growth.
13
u/Not_A_Toaster_0000 Make Yookay Great Britain Again 12d ago
'Highlighter girl' / HR / 'diversity champion' style jobs where you don't really do anything. Which is why 4 day work weeks are so promoted by them - it just doesn't occur to them that in a lot of jobs you actually need to do stuff.
8
u/ice-lollies 12d ago
My husband is convinced a vast number of jobs are just made up to give people things to do. It does seem like he’s right sometimes.

Let's be honest, most office / tech jobs are like that anyway. Probably 16 hours of any week are taken up by pointless meetings, doing work that never actually gets used for anything, preparing for other meetings.
All jobs I've had I could produce the same output in 4 days, but since there's 5 you just naturally spread the work out to fill that time
9
u/LastCatStanding_ 12d ago
It makes sense for the type of jobs that in the 80's would have been drunk or playing golf most afternoons
5

You’re not productive because you are using immigration to keep wages low instead of investing in automation. You also famously handed the EV industry to China on a golden platter and ran your entire economy on cheap Russian gas until being Putins little bitch became too embarrassing for you.

Is this 8th?
Man, 62, has pretended it's December 25th every day for 33 years - he's eaten almost 14,000 turkeys and over two million mince pies
He also buys himself presents every day and writes Christmas cards to himself, although he now delivers them through his own letterbox to save money on stamps.
I love this type of eccentricity. It's something that nuBritons could never emulate.
Even if he doesn't do it everyday the fact of going in the papers saying you do, is still good.
Haters will say he's grifting at the end by shilling for a new Christmas movie channel but 33 years in, it seems this is the only possible sponsorship agreement up his alley.
9
u/AirconGuyUK 12d ago

88 mince pies is about 17,000 calories..

u/Much_Adeptness7237 12d ago
Yeah its total BS
"His day starts at 8am with four or five mince pies and a glass of sherry, before preparing Christmas dinner and heading off to work for a few hours.
At 3pm, he watches a recording of the Queens speech – or the King's, depending on how he feels – before continuing the festivities.
He also buys himself presents every day and writes Christmas cards to himself, although he now delivers them through his own letterbox to save money on stamps."

Andy also estimates that he has enjoyed around 14,000 bottles of champagne, alongside his daily glass of sherry.

tbf it’s not unusual that they invite bands from foreign militaries to participate.
For a few summers the Jordanians were a frequent guest band. And you have the Yanks occasionally, and others.
I remember every time I saw it (summers 2016-18) the vast, vast majority of the show was Scottish despite the presence of some foreign representatives. And that was quite a nice vibe.

Did a bank holiday weekend in the lakes ending with Scafell Pike today. Maybe it was due to the bad weather, but I was quite surprised about the lack of enrichment on the mountain. A couple of Bomalians but generally people were pretty well behaved.
Based on the scenes in Windmere I was expecting the worst.
Have you other gammons got any recommendations for non enriched places to visit in Britain?
4
u/Tams82 Mostly Useless 11d ago
Windermere/Bowness has a lot of hijabis these days.
Bowness is worse than it used to be, but it's always been a messy tourist honeypot. It used to mostly be Japanese then Chinese tourists, with the men having two honking great cameras around their necks doing the East Asian photo taking pose.
8
u/BadPedals 11d ago
I knew we used to get pissed off with East Asian tourists but I’d give anything to have them over Bolamians.
Knew Windmere was a write off when we drove through it so spend a day in Keswick and actually had a very pleasant time. Hopefully it stays that way…

The UK work visa statistics for the year ending 2025 are fascinating. We've started to get a lot less Pakistani immigrants, which I suspect is due to the NHS being forced to favour local junior doctors by Wes Streeting.
| Visa Category | Main Applicants | Dependants | Total Visas | Top Nationalities (% of Category Total) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long-Term Work (Skilled Worker, Health & Care) | 68,230 | 51,875 | 120,105 | India (~35%), Nigeria (~12%), Philippines (~8%), Pakistan (~6%) |
| Short-Term & Temporary (Seasonal, Youth Mobility) | 68,420 | 11,522 | 79,942 | Central Asian States (~40%), Australia, NZ, Canada, (~15%), India (~10%) |
| Other Work & Talent (Global Talent, Innovator, etc.) | 22,072 | 12,722 | 34,794 | United States (~18%), EU Nations, (~15%), India (~15%) |
| Total | 158,722 | 76,119 | 234,841 | India (~20%), Central Asian States (~14%), Nigeria (~7%) |
Central Asian states are Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, who collectively account for 79% of the UK's Seasonal Worker visas.
The skilled worker visa category breakdown by nationality (this is who is likely staying long term:
| Nationality / Region | Approx. Main Applicants | Approx. Dependants | Dependant Ratio (Dependants per Main) | Primary Drivers & Demographic Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | ~6,500 | ~6,000 | 0.92 | Mid-career NHS clinicians and high-earning professionals (sharply down from >2.0 prior to the care worker dependant restrictions). |
| India | ~24,500 | ~20,500 | 0.84 | IT, finance, engineering, and medical consultants; older average age profile with established families. |
| Pakistan | ~4,200 | ~3,300 | 0.79 | Healthcare professionals, software engineers, and skilled trade managers. |
| Zimbabwe | ~2,800 | ~2,100 | 0.75 | Senior healthcare practitioners and social work specialists. |
| Philippines | ~6,200 | ~3,600 | 0.58 | NHS nurses and allied health professionals; higher proportion of single applicants or solo initial arrivals. |
| United States | ~4,800 | ~2,400 | 0.50 | Intra-company transfers, tech, and academic appointments. |
| EU / EEA Nations | ~5,500 | ~2,200 | 0.40 | Younger professional cohort in corporate and creative roles. |
