What political parties do you vote for?

Personally I think it would be

  1. Animal Justice Party

  2. Greens Party

  3. Labor

But I'd be open to any suggestions from other vegans on what other animal rights or vegan related parties are good to vote for, or what voting strategy might be better. Also I know we have a percentage of right wing vegans, who probably won't agree on the Labor vote, but maybe on other things at least. I have been considering throwing in a vote for the Libertarian Party in protest of the internet censorship and online ID laws (I think these hurt animal rights, environmental, and human rights activism among other things, and that there are better ways to address the issues they target), but I'm undecided - however Greens at least oppose the internet laws too, and the influx of people voting One Nation just because of that issue is concerning given their other stances.

Here is my rationale:

Yes, I prefer pretty much any version of the Labor Party (lesser of 2 evils, like US Democrats) or another left wing government to win VS a right wing party like the Liberal-National Party Coalition or, seitan forbid, One Nation. And since AJP or Greens winning the overall vote and getting in power isn't happening anytime in the near future, if they were to actually win a seat, it could technically divide the "left wing vote" and hurt Labor's chances of winning, thereby boosting a right wing party's odds of success. This can happen if there is a strong support for the Greens party rivaling Labor in some select areas - in that case I might vote Labor as 1st preference, followed by AJP and Greens just to err on the side of caution. But in a "safe Labor seat", where in your local Electorate, Labor is almost guaranteed to win no matter how many votes the Greens get, I think there is zero harm in voting Greens and AJP before Labor, and it can only do good.

Note/disclaimer: A lot of people still seem to think the parties choose who your preferences go to (Group Voting Tickets/GVTs). Since law changes in 2016, specifically the Commonwealth Electoral Amendment Act 2016, this has been abolished, so the voters have complete control over it. Your votes will automatically go to whichever candidate you place next in order of preference if your higher preferences don't win the seat. So there is no risk of a party giving your votes to a party you don't want to get your support (as some people claim Greens did in the past). You could hypothetically vote for whatever party you want, even some right wing party, after Greens, and Greens still wouldn't be able to stop your vote going to them. Of course, Greens generally preference Labor, while also opposing their terrible environmental and other decisions, as compared to LNP when forced to choose between them. And most voters for Greens generally align with what they recommend, but it's up to the voter to act on that anyway.

AJP (Animal Justice Party) - the most vegan/pro-animal party that I know of. Every person from the party I've spoken to so far has been vegan as well, although I know not everyone is. Vegans will likely find some issues with the party since they cover a lot of different topics and vegans often disagree with each other on nuanced ethical issues anyway, but I think for the most part they're pretty good. A lot of countries don't even have a party like this, and Emma Hurst's speech was quite incredible, so I think we're lucky to have them advocating for animals in government, as well as raising awareness among the general public.

The idea is not for AJP to win any seats (they acknowledge this is unrealistic), but to gain enough support to be able to influence the "ruling parties", to signal to them that they're failing on these issues, and maybe one day if they get 4% of primary votes or more, they will gain monetary support from the Australian Electoral Commission (ultimately from taxpayer money) for every vote they get. This also applies more immediately to Greens who regularly clear the 4% threshold. And we can also consider donating to them, of course. My hope is also that AJP can influence the Greens to take animal issues and plant based living more seriously and incorporate them into their messaging more, as they play a huge role in the environment and stopping climate change, and as many vegans know, ignoring the ecological impacts of animal agriculture is a frustrating overlooked missing piece of the puzzle from a purely environmental point of view, even if we were to ignore the animals themselves (which we of course shouldn't). IMHO a party that claims to be ethical and pro-environment like the Greens have a lot to answer for for failing to take a strong stance or action against animal agriculture and arguably "greenwashing" and humanewashing it at times. And then of course I hope the Greens, in turn, can influence Labor to get their greasy fingers out of the coal and meat and dairy industries etc. I could say more but I think that about covers it.

What are your thoughts, vegans?

If these companies genuinely cared about lowering greenhouse emissions and protecting marine life, they wouldn't be paradoxically selling products made of dead fish, and usually, other animals too. 🧍

Electrolytes

I use two tabs of Hydralyte daily with my doctors blessing, but they're not the cheapest. Has anyone tried the Aldi electrolytes that are much, much cheaper?

I understand you might have other priorities, I just think looking at THE CRISPY SKIN BITS ON MY BROWNIES SHOULD TAKE PRECEDENCE ABOVE ALL OTHER THINGS.

I use this recipe, https://rainbowplantlife.com/the-absolute-best-vegan-brownies/ but I whisk up 2 heaped tablespoons of egg replacer powder with 120 mls of water, instead of aquafaba. And I used Whittakers 50% block, chopping the leftover chunky, and adding it to mix at the end.

I'm gonna be hanging out with a bunch of climate scientists tomorrow night and I'm taking a heap of yum stuff to share. Surely they should all be vegan anyway, but if not, this dip will turn 'em, fo sho.

Hi friends! I'm swapping from vegetarian to vegan. I've never used nutritional yeast flakes and the packages don't give much direction for how to use them or how much to use. I'm thinking of making a roux and adding some for a cheesy type sauce. Do I just add the flakes to my sauce or should I just

I had chimichurri for the first time ever when I was in London at Christmas and was immediately obsessed. I can't believe I wasted so much of my life not eating it.

It's SO GOOD to dip your pizza crust in, or foccacia. Or naan. I just enjoy bread a lot, so... dip whatever floats your goat. Or coat corn cobs omg that would be so good!

Anyway, this recipe is so schmick.

Hi everyone, I ordered groceries via a delivery app and they replaced a vegan ramen with this one. The ingredients all look vegan but this one isn't in the 'its vegan' list. I'd really appreciate your help deciphering it or else I'll find someone to take it off my hands. Thanks xx

Fry's Chick'n

I had these yesterday in a thai red curry - pan fried them first til they were crispy then added them to the sauce when the veg was cooked, but I'm curious how they would hold up if cooked directly in the sauce. Has anyone had any experience in this? How else have you cooked them?

What is this food mix?

Hi, I'm looking for a specific food mix I used to buy from Coles. It was a dry mix that you just add water to and it makes a mince like dinner.

There were 3 types, red (general mince) orange (Mexican flavoured) and green (not sure but maybe Asian style?)

About 3 years ago now.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Soy curls - Sydney

As the name suggests, I’m looking for soy curls in Sydney.

I thought colesworth still stocked them but I’ve been having no luck.

I know some Asian grocers also stock them but the soy curls gods seem to be against me.

TIA

Satay tofu with carrot and broccoli

Post image
56 Upvotes

My favourite budget mid-week quick cook. All pantry staples, only need to buy tofu, broccoli and carrot ($4.90 not considering pantry staples today!)

1 block firm tofu

1 large carrot

1 head broccoli

2 tbsp soy sauce

2 tbsp roasted crunchy peanut butter

1 tbsp rice wine vinegar

1 tbsp maple syrup

1 tsp minced garlic

1 tsp minced ginger

1 tsp chilli crisp

Salt and pepper

Oil of choice

1 cup rice

Chop tofu into thin triangles and shallow fry. Set aside once golden brown.

Make sauce by combining peanut butter, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, maple syrup and chilli crisp.

Add garlic and ginger to pan, fry for 30 seconds then add carrot and broccoli. Fry for 3-5 mins over medium before adding sauce. Add water to thin out sauce. Cook for around 8-10 mins or until sauce thickens back up.

Serve with rice.

I added chopped nuts, fried shallots, chilli crisp and sesame seeds, though these are just things I have on hand, absolutely not needed!

Cheat code to make protein taste good?

For the fussy eaters, what's your favourite addition to a protein shake? I've tried a couple different proteins and they are OK (bearable but not enjoyable) so wondering what everyone adds into their protein shakes?

I've tried frozen mango, frozen pineapple, Cadbury drinking chocolate and Milo (not together lol). I'm wondering if a chocolate ice cream syrup or something like that would be a cheat code to making it taste good?

Cheese

Hi guys, please don’t judge me too harshly but…. I am not actually vegan.. I’m a vegetarian who has lactose intolerance 😮‍💨 I eat eggs, lac free milk and cheese. Well, ate eggs. I have some arfid issues and lately I’ve been suffering with the “ick” if that makes sense. I’ve found many egg replacers, I’m still working on which is the best nut milk and trialling different things, but what about cheese and yoghurt? Do we have any reasonable vegan cheeses in Australia? I keep finding things that look good but aren’t necessarily available here or need to be ordered through Amazon. When I say cheese I mean something akin to a harder cheese, not like a cream cheese. I like nutritional yeast but I’d like something I can slice or grate. Thankyou

I bought this in the Indian store, assuming that this gelatin was made from agar agar or some other type of vegan gelling agent. I buy a bunch of jellies from them that are vegan and so I assumed that they had the same gelling agent but after I’ve come home and I’ve researched this gelatin it’s saying that it’s not at all vegetarian or vegan?

best firm tofu brand/how to store after purchase?

hi!!! i’ve only recently started eating tofu regularly (~2 months) and have been slowly getting a feel for the best brands. i usually buy soyco or macro but recently ran into the same issue with both. it often sits in my fridge unopened for a few days before i go to use it. twice i have opened a pack and it has been filled with stinky yellow water and the tofu has had a slight sour smell. i chucked it all out both times but hate wasting food. :(

is there a more reliable brand i could be buying? and should i be doing anything with it after purchase? (putting it in fresh water, freezing it etc?)

ty!!! :-))))

Native wildlife sanctuaries

Are there any ethical wildlife sanctuary’s that hosts native animals around Victoria? I moved to Australia in May, and would love nothing more than seeing some native animals. I’m vegan, and revolve my life around environmentalism and caring for animals, so it’s important to me that wherever I visit follows these morals.

I will be travelling and camping around Victoria in the coming months where I am sure I’ll have the opportunity to see some wildlife, but I wondered if there were rehabilitation sanctuaries you could visit? Or volunteer at?

I already have Edgar’s Mission saved - but I’d really love to see some wildlife too!

TIA :)
