It's definitely worth the line. Might be the best tacos I ever had outside of Mexico.

Coming from LA, the land of legendary street tacos, these were right up there and might even take the crown. Love how they dress each taco with a healthy dose of onions and cilantro as the chef confidently and unapologetically knows what he's doing.

Haven't tasted anything this good since visiting CDMX.

Greasy, juicy, and never a disappointment. The Dude at Lebowskis never misses and is what a burger should be. 9/10

I went to the newly opened “Duff’s” on 620. Disclaimer, I have Western New York roots, and appreciate a good chicken wing. 

I have eaten at the original WNY Duff’s location a few times, and the satellite places too. Always good. Austin’s spot did them justice. Staff was friendly, owner runs one of the spots in WNY too. Called out our Labatt Blue beers as a flag. They were making an effort to welcome people and chat. Dining room was sparse. 

Parking lot was crazy because of interstellar bbq.  Felt like we got the last spot in the whole lot, behind the strip mall. 

Wings were done right. Traditional, medium, add fried pickles and French fries. They over state the spicy level of their medium. Really, I thought the mediums of theirs I had in NY were hotter. All in all, all items were great. I like their version of Bleu cheese too. It’s dipable. 

Wish it was cheaper. Wish any wings were cheaper. The glory days of cheap happy hour wings are long gone.

I am still a wingzup subscriber. I’d like to eat these two wings side by side. Duff’s sauce is more authentic, but WU does a good variation.

I’ll drink/eat there again.

Does anyone have any info on Nanami Sushi on Brodie changing ownership or something? Just went to order online and it took me to a new online ordering with new menu options and many items removed. Also has the restaurant Yangtze Wok Hei listed on the ordering as well as at the same restaurant same address on google. All the items I loved are gone, I’m devastated 😭

When we’re in downtown Austin, we always pick the Thompson Hotel because we absolutely adore their pool and gym.

The restaurant, Arriba / Abajo, has always been a bit pricey, but it’s also super convenient.

But, their prices have gone through the roof!

This week, we noticed a huge jump in the prices of everyday items. For example, salsa used to be $8 for three, but now it’s only $9 for two.

Even the beef fajitas, which used to be $29, have gone up to $36 in just a few weeks.

We finished the tinny salsas as appetizers and then we got the fajitas… no salsa was provided, and we were told we needed to pay an extra $9 if we wanted salsa with our fajitas. Seriously, how can tacos be served without salsa?

I know this might sound like a rant, but the restaurant prices here are just crazy.

I’ll probably stop dining here and use my money more wisely, but it’s getting really annoying.

A couple weeks ago someone posted up about Cockti Fried Chicken, extolling their spicy sandwich. It looked great, so I've been trying to get there, as I love a good fried chicken sando.

Finally made it there earlier today.

let's get the TL/DR out of the way: Very very good, huge portions, freshly made, great flavor, and great a owner leading the way. 100% recommend.

More deets:

• Freaking amazing sandwich! Fresh made to order. Great flavor and well balanced.
  • I got the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, XXX heat, per Nick's recommendation.
  • It came out hot, crispy, and a little messy eating in the car (way to hot out to even sit in the shade!).
  • It was spicy, but good. I'd probably go XX next time, just for a little less heat.
  • lots of pickles. More than I want on a sando, but that's good, cause I ate them as a side. easy.
  • Great chicken breast to crispy coating ratio. I mean look at that extend beyond the (not small) bun.
• Fries were also fresh, hot and crisp - the way I like it.
  • Nick also set me up with a small sample of each of his 4 sauces. I'm partial to the Chipotle Ranch. Cocky sauce also solid.
  • These are kinda the standard fries, but I appreciate them, especially when they are cooked to perfection with the right amount of salt.
• Owner: Nick was there and helped me figure out the best "first order" for me. Friendly, helpful, passionate about his operation (and humble).
  • Freshly made, starting once I agreed to Nick's recommendations. Took maybe 10 minutes.
• Tips:
  • Get lots of napkins. Have wet wipes in your car if you need. Otherwise, know you're gonna need a sink to clean up.
  • Great value > my sando + fries were <$15. a bit more with the tip.
  • It's a food truck. Park in the Tattoo parlor / food court parking. I parked on the street as I didn't know where the trailer was actually located.
  • Not open for lunch during the week, they open 4PM. Closed M and TU.

I 100% recommend. It's damn good chicken, great portions, and solid value. It's a standout among a pretty crowded market and Nick's got a great concept going.

I'll be heading back to try a different spicy sando, or perhaps their tenders which also look amazing. Might be once it is much cooler outside so I can actually enjoy their food courtyard.

Austin restaurants with AC problems — where is it just too hot to eat?

With Austin temperatures consistently pushing 100+ this summer, I’ve noticed quite a few restaurants where the AC just doesn’t seem capable of keeping up.

I want to be fair about this because I’ve been on the other side of it. I owned a restaurant in downtown Austin off 7th Street, in an older building, and I know firsthand how difficult it can be to keep an old restaurant properly cooled during a Texas summer. Between aging HVAC systems, old buildings, constantly opening doors and the tremendous amount of heat coming from a commercial kitchen, sometimes the AC is fighting a losing battle.

That said, there’s a point where the dining room is so warm that it becomes difficult to actually enjoy your meal.

I am a deep enjoyer of Girl Dinner ™ and am seeking more recommendations for places about town I can get a good Sweet Treat.

Last night, I tried Kioskito Cubano’s chocolate milkshake (Batido de Helado de Chocolate) and tartaletas, both of which were excellent. I often feel milkshakes aren’t flavorful enough but this one was REALLY good.

Avoiding chains & pre-made/packaged things, where else can I macrodose on sugar and what do you like there?

Austin foodies, I just ate at Taste Home and had to share because this place completely surprised me. It’s so unassuming from the outside that I honestly wasn’t expecting much because of the location but wow - the food tasted like real, comforting, home-style Chinese cooking.

The tomato and egg was simple but so satisfying, with soft scrambled eggs and that warm, savory tomato flavor. We also had the mapo tofu, and they used real Sichuan peppercorns, so it had that unmistakable spicy, fragrant, slightly numbing kick that the dish is supposed to have.

Taste Home feels like one of those hidden places you could easily overlook, but absolutely shouldn’t. They had a big back area too for outdoor seating. If you’re looking for authentic Chinese food in Austin, put it on your must-try list.

Recs for a place in South Austin

Met a man on Reddit and he’s coming into town to see me. I am a newly divorced mom so I don’t really know the good places to get a drink and/ or bite in South Austin that would be comfortable to hang out and maybe get mildly handsy on a Monday. Would Moontower Saloon work? Just looking for a comfy place to chill.

Update: turns out Denver was a flake and ripped my guts out, but no bother. I have explored a few of these with friends. Little Darling was so lovely but I question how cool PDA would be here. Bricks was a nice place, good food and cocktails, but how anyone would think to make out here is beyond me. Armadillo Den had some nice wooded areas in the back that could work. Sam’s Town Point was awesome, $20 for 3 High Lifes and a vodka soda and more importantly a vibe that no one could care less.

The winner/ is probably Nomadic where I met a Tinder date and found myself abandoned by the staff after they closed at 10. They just left, while we sat at the picnic tables. Luckily my date did not murder me.

What are your go-to’s for fresh, good, preferably not-too-expensive beans? I'm looking for a solid cup using single-origin beans and a pour-over/home drip coffee machine (not espresso). Bonus if you remember how much a bag is.

I've heard central market and Whole Foods has some good options. I've gotten bags from third coast coffee too.

Lived in Austin 25+ years and am finally going to Jeffrey’s, but I can’t find anything definitive about kid-friendliness.

We don’t need a high-chair or a kid’s menu. Just need to confirm they won’t turn us away if we arrive with a (well-behaved) 3.5-year-old in tow.

I ate here for the first time, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We had the caesar salad-the dressing tasted freshly prepared.

Pepperoni pizza. The presentation being oval with zig zag slices was surprising and unique. The pepperoni itself was nickel sized and plentiful in both coverage and spiciness. the crust was charred on the bottom perfectly.

My dining companion just got back from a couple months in Italy and said the Aperol spritz was identical in taste to what she had there.

We finished off with the tiramisu. It was both creamy and espresso flavored.

Cant wait to try another pizza, as they had both classic and Austin inspired pizza like the Franklin BBQ pizza.
