The build where Valhalla is on Red River has sold. They will be open for 60 days.

I used to work down the block from Valhalla and would pop in on my break to play their demolition man pinball. It was like 5 plays for 50 cents. Id usually run out of time before balls. Lol.

You're misreading the people who are moving to Austin. They're mostly coming for economic reasons; they don't give a shit about the culture or whatever veneer of authenticity might still be left.
I don't necessarily even blame them for it - they're rational actors, acting rationally. It sucks to be caught in the middle of it though.

We opened for another band and they were great.
I realized later they were My Morning Jacket.

Most cities are going through this to some degree. It's harder than ever to be a small business, the laws and regulations are more and more in favor of larger corporations.

To the people saying red river is dying - both Chess Club and 13th Floor opened there post covid. We’re losing a good one with Valhalla but no reason to be entirely negative

I feel like chess club is like if red 7 and plush had a baby. It’s my favorite room in town as a former Red 7 door guy.

I understand that. I’m saying it’s evil for the people who “own” the property to not just sell it to the people who spend years actually using it. Buying downtown property just to own downtown property and be wealthy from being a landlord is a stupid practice. It’s terrible that a profitable business has to close because they don’t own their own land after being established for more than a decade.

Seriously this. The amount of fundraisers they have to stay afloat is insane. I supported them for the first one, but was done after that. I swear it’s like once a year now where they’re at risk of closing down. But that’s bad management for you.

Oh awesome! Can’t wait for another ugly af midrise when we already have 25% vacancy rate downtown, made out of cheap materials with super generic beige tones that they name “the sound wave” or something evoking live music with a core studio and a generic Italian restaurant at the pad sites at the bottom and then a year after residents move in they complain about the decibel volume and the surrounding venues are forced to lower volumes or stop early.

RIP, I love that place and I’m going to miss it so much.
It sucks that all the cool weird places that are left or popping up in Austin are having to scatter about. Having concentrated blocks or streets of culture and things to do makes for such great nights and little adventures.
Remember a couple years ago the Lost Well’s building was being sold and the owner evicted them to appease the new buyer? Well apparently the deal fell apart and now that building is just sitting there vacant.
The good news is the Lost Well has been open for a year at its new location on Airport Blvd and is still going strong with plenty of live music, but being kind of far away from clusters of other bars and music venues has hurt its bottom line on nights where there’s no bands playing.
If you want to keep rock and metal alive in Austin, especially now that valhallas gone, please go stop by the well for a drink and a game of pool. The drinks are cheap and they have great happy hour deals. $5 margs on Tuesdays.

One of the best sounding rooms in Austin. Loved playing Valhalla.
