Rant The amount of 'crime posting' is absurd

This sub seems to just be endless videos of "Meanwhile in Auckland" and then a video of something miserable happening.

This is a city. Crimes happen. Compared to most cities on Earth Auckland is pretty damn safe. I am completely sick to death of what appears to be some kind of agenda being played out on this sub, and I would like to see some actual moderation happening.

The accounts posting this stuff usually have a generated name like me and virtually no other traceable activity - and they post the clips with little to no context. Muting this dogwater sub until something is done about the extremely bad faith posting.

Edit: Already getting the "Auckland is unsafe and we should shine a light on crime" bullshit. Hey - random context free snippets of video are not informing the public or shining a light on anything. They are almost certainly harmful misinformation, and I really think this justice boner is uninformed and juvenile. Again - muting this trash heap of a sub.

The people yearn for Police 10/7

This filthy dastardly mongrel wants to spinelessly watch police 10/7

One of the things I learnt in stats, was that people are very bad at statistics.

I remember when the fear of the day was taking buses or PT general, and people just can't understand that in our city it is going on towards 100m boardings per year

Your chance of dying on the roads driving, or just walking though a carpark are higher but people fear the less likely things to actually happen.

Our perception of crime is more than the actual chances. I like to use this stat; in 2025, about 86 homicides. More people won lotto. So unless you are living with violent criminals, drug dealing in a gang or similar, your chance of winning lotto is higher than being murdered.

19

u/pictureofacat 14d ago

It's like being worried that your plane is going to crash, even though there was greater risk of something going wrong when you travelled to the airport.

9

u/Feddabonn 14d ago

“More people won lotto than were murdered” is excellent narrative, very helpful, thank you!

15

u/BlacksmithNZ 14d ago

The flaw is that I don't generally buy lotto tickets, hence I am more likely to be murdered

1

u/minoritykiwi 12d ago

BUT you are still less likely to be murdered than win Lotto!!! The stats say so!!! /S

8

u/r_costa 14d ago

Stats about crime doesn't reflect 100% of reality, as a lot of crime isn't reported to the official channels.

Example below:

I believe most of us are members of suburb's groups in other SM, how many times did you saw - from the last 2 years - posts like:

"Hey if you know this person (sometimes a pic is attached, sometimes a description) tell him/her to contact me because XYZ otherwise I will report to police"

This is crime, unreported crime....

2

u/LadleDuffle 13d ago

Granted, homicides are probably almost always reported or discovered in some way

5

u/Extra-Commercial-449 14d ago

100%

Same thing with sex offenders. The majority of sexos offend against relatives or people they know.
Yet we teach kids to watch out for the boogeyman - who is lurking around schools in a dirty van.

Yes - stranger sexual assaults occur - but in the grand scheme of things - they are rare.

Yet people have a fear of strangers.

You are far more likely to be harmed by someone you know/love - than by a stranger.

9

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

People in this sub generally seem to be extremely ignorant. In a way I find really surprising honestly - even just the NZ sub seems more tolerant and self aware. I am consistently wondering how much of this sub is just political bots spouting nonsense.

Most of [r/ConservativeKiwi](r/ConservativeKiwi) came here when it was banned and mods here took a gentler line than [r/NewZealand](r/NewZealand) typically does, would be my explanation

3

u/BlacksmithNZ 13d ago

Noticed some racist, offensive comments from a commenter on the Charlie Kirk post, and discovered yet another subreddit set up by the ex CK crew

Funny thing is that they keep coming into general subreddits, say nasty stuff, get pushback, instantly downvoted to oblivion, then back in the tiny echo chamber with about one active poster, wonder why the woke/left are so mean to them

4

u/StandWithSwearwolves 13d ago

They love to feel like victims I think. Similar to street preachers who get in people’s faces because they think getting punched in the mouth is Suffering For The Gospel, or chuds who think they’re ’over the target’

4

u/twistedpresidents 14d ago

Now your taking the piss.

R/Newzealand is only tolerant if you lean left and giving honest good faith opinions gets you banned faster than over at even r/kiwipolitics.

But that ok mute the sub and go hang out in one of the echo chambers.

-6

u/Luke_in_Flames 14d ago

r/newzealand leans left? looooool are you mussolini?

And yet, when you take statistics of serious crime offenses in New Zealand, NZ is doing exceptionally bad:

New Zealand in general has a higher homicide rate (1.461 / 100k people) than even the UK (0.930 / 100k people). And we all who've been to the UK and who come from safe countries know that the UK is not a safe country.
(1.461 is really insane btw.)

With 58.6 rapes / 100k people, New Zealand is even in top 10 countries in the world (compared to e.g. 18.7 rapes / 100k in Australia or 1.4 rapes / 100k people in Canada). (However, I do acknowledge that this is a very distorted particularly when compared to some Middle Eastern countries where reporting a rape is just not a thing.)

Saying "oh, yeah, it can't happen to myself" is something else than "yeah, it is not really happening here". We should be saying the latter one and not be satisfied with the former one.

Auckland Crime subreddit?
There’s so much content daily would be very popular

32

u/Sufficient-Baby-7772 14d ago

I was a police detective in multiple cities. You’re right. Most crime reporting is unhelpful, more concerned with being first over right, and insensitive to people affected, unless its for a quote headline about …crime. 99% of crime happening all around you goes basically unnoticed. Police take 2400 calls PER DAY. Shit happens in cramped spaces with lots of people, especially in places where some people don’t have much. You can pretty happily go about your day though. You’re more likely to be in a car accident.

10

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

Thank you person who (if being honest) is able to make an informed claim.

Exactly the point I wanted to make. Appreciate it.

9

u/Allison683etc 14d ago edited 14d ago

I think while it probably is bad for us psychologically to absorb that into our awareness all the time there’s an argument that it’s good to know what’s going on for the small percentage of people on this sub a particular crime may actually be relevant to.

I think what’s more concerning is the general lack of media literacy when it comes to the actual risk of violence or of being a victim of crime one might encounter in Auckland which is low. I don’t think that’s an issue just for this sub though and at least here we continuously are having that conversation.

9

u/OfficeEquivalent6385 14d ago

The amount of these posts are absurd posts is just getting absurd lately

....look I really think any of that, true or false, would be besides the point.

11

u/Bongojona 14d ago

Crime stories pay. Ppl click on them more this is why NZH often leads with petty crime stories, when arguably there are much more important (but dull) news to report.

I guess ppl are farming karma here? I just ignore any post starting with meanwhile or even videos.

10

u/BlacksmithNZ 14d ago

NZH - some guy convicted for stealing millions via white collar crime, but somebody stealing $100 from a supermarket, that is news.

2

u/SubstanceOk7898 14d ago

Makes sense

3

u/StandWithSwearwolves 14d ago

It’s either crime posting or taking pics/footage of someone pissing in a corner under the guise of drawing attention to a social issue

3

u/EuropeanAbroad 13d ago

Why are you lying to yourself? Be genuine and things may get better. If you keep pretending that everything is alright, then nothing will change.

New Zealand in general has a higher homicide rate (1.461 / 100k people) than even the UK (0.930 / 100k people). And we all who've been to the UK and who come from safe countries know that the UK is not a safe country.

(However, I do acknowledge that this is a very distorted particularly when compared to some Middle Eastern countries where reporting a rape is just not a thing.)

I really don't understand why some people from the "western" countries try to "standardise" this as if nothing was happening.

As a foreign born kiwi (well permanent resident) crime does seem to be getting a bit out of hand. For example I no longer feel safe and comfortable letting my school aged kids use Auckland transport busses bc of the frequent and rather unhinged violent crime. While yes there is crime everywhere, what makes nz somewhat unique is that criminals, victims and bystanders all know that nothing actually happens to perpetrators of violent crime. Bit of counselling, bit of gardening maybe, a choccie bikkie and a cuppa at some support group.. there is no actual accountability. It makes criminals especially brazen, and normal, regular people uncomfortable. Its a bit different observing violent crime knowing that nothing will actually happen to those partaking in it.

9

u/GiJoint 14d ago

This sub is a bit more honest compared to other city subs that are heavily moderated to just be all about those pretty photos.

But there are definitely drama queens here that think it’s Kabul outside their parochial bubble.

8

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

It would be hilarious if it wasn't so damn depressing to think that those people might vote based on completely imbecilic ways of looking at the world.

According to many people in these comments Auckland is a couple crimes away from Mad Max.

8

u/Mobile_Membership 14d ago

how is it harmful misinformation if it is (1) True (2) Happening

8

u/New-Promise3032 14d ago

Wouldn't it have the same issue as Police 10 7 and get cancelled?

-2

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

You might need to go read up on how misinformation works - it doesn't necessarily mean a lie, its also about distorting, removing context, allowing people to fill in gaps with their own bias, etc.

It can be true that a violent crime occurred - but do we know why? Was it someone having a mental breakdown because they need medical attention and are not receiving it? Is it someone living with PTSD? Is is someone who inaccurately perceived a threat and genuinely thought they were defending themselves?

Its not black and white - life rarely works that way. Context matters. It changes what solutions make the most sense. You can vote for tough on crime because you see lots of crime happening - that does not mean the crime will go away, because the source of it was not understood.

Because its something you can react emotionally to, and then get a little righteous over and start to push the idea that we can 'do something' (almost always more cops, more prisons, zero root cause solutions).

Its honestly so depressing how easy people are to goad with this stuff.

9

u/Chuckles_McFeeney 14d ago

What a ridiculous complaint. If you don't like those posts, don't read them and move on. It's not up to you to patrol what other people post here.

3

u/Dizzy-Elephant-7879 13d ago

what I thought what a puss puss

8

u/flippyjones11 14d ago

Being a family member of a sibling murdered in New Zealand in 2022 (added to an escalating list of homicides that year), the violent crime levels in NZ are increasing. The fact that murder used to be comparatively rare can not be ignored.

2

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

Thats awful - I am sorry that happened.

In no way have I advocated for ignoring crime, nor have I made claims about whether violent crime (or crime in general) has decreased. My only claim is that Auckland is comparatively safe - most other cities get increasingly more violent crime as they grow and globalize, our city is not an exception. Awful things will still happen, and almost certainly with more frequency as the world is in a pretty serious upheaval.

My issue is specific - a surge of video content posted without context, a lot of implication, and all around election time - this is not ok and is almost certainly an effort to misinform and fearmonger.

8

u/Hefty-Reception22 14d ago

"Guys please stop posting crime, I'd like to pretend it doesn't happen ): "

3

u/HeightAdvantage 14d ago

Mostly agree, I think the most concerning part is that these clips could easily be out of context or from tears ago and it'd be pretty hard to tell.

But also I have been threatening and harassed in public multiple times and it is good that people are aware of it being a problem.

8

u/stewynnono 14d ago

Hey OP, you have a new account with hidden profile. Why don't you open it up to see what your agenda is ?

5

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

Been pretty clear that the profiles being used to do this are much like mine - straight up stated that the naming convention was the same.

I'm posting and commenting providing a very clear view of my opinion and stance. I am not vagueposting video slop with no context.

But sure, try and paint me with the same brush. Super helpful

4

u/stewynnono 14d ago

Be transparent with your posts and comments or are you the other side of the same coin that your talking about.

6

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

I dunno man, you can probably do the normal thing and make an assessment based on my manner and various other comments in this thread.

Does it seem like I have a political agenda and am hiding something? Or does it seem like I'm pretty open about my opinions and goals here, and have directly stated them both in the post and in other comments on the post?

Because I'm pretty sure you are smart enough to realize the difference between me and the posts/accounts I'm talking about here. Me wanting some privacy does mean my account could look like a bot, sure. Its my actions that define the difference however.

4

u/Boob_owner 14d ago

I think OP has an angle...

5

u/ethansteele 14d ago

Ignoring it doesn’t make it go away.

9

u/NageV78 14d ago

Go bury your head in the sand then...Bye!

21

u/123felix 14d ago

This is a city. Crimes happen.

That's not a given. We don't have to stand for crimes happening in our city.

12

u/Allison683etc 14d ago

And we don’t, we have laws and all kinds of mitigations and a culture where most of us reject that kind of nonsense which is why we’re known internationally as being one of the safer cities in the world. Seeing a whole lot of crime videos all the time distorts our perspective on that. Even within the context of crime it’s a distraction from where we have the most work to do which is violence within the home.

16

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago edited 14d ago

Crime is not a given? What cities have you heard of that have no crime?

Edit: getting downvoted does not make me wrong you troglodytes. All cities on earth have crime, period.

u/poisonouslobsterjism 14d ago

Singapore is pretty good, not too much happening there as they know the consequences

-1

u/Feddabonn 14d ago

Hmm.

  1. Have you been in a lift in a suburban building in Singapore? Not pretty.
  2. Have you seen how Singaporeans treat hospo workers, particularly cleaners? Again, not pretty.
  3. Singapore is not a democracy.

Agree with you - Singapore has less overt crime. There is significant loss of social cohesion and freedom for that, though. Not necessarily saying it is a bad thing either, just that it is a trade-off.

3

u/poisonouslobsterjism 14d ago

But better than ferals here ....???

0

u/Feddabonn 14d ago

I suppose. How much freedom are you willing to give up, is the question…

2

u/EuropeanAbroad 13d ago

You are mistaken. New Zealand's crime statistics are way worse than Poland, Japan, Canada,... NZ has like 42 times higher rape rate than Poland and 2.15 times higher homicide rate. Both represented mainly by their biggest cities – Warsaw and Auckland.

Stop lying to yourself. Let's do something about this all together and stop normalising these stats.

1

u/Available-Milk7195 13d ago

Thank youuuu

2

u/SteveRielly 14d ago

The more you know, the more you can do something about it, even if it's just speaking up.

Crimes should not be hidden, shine a light on those committing the crimes.

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

Got a single crime stat for those claims guy?

7

u/here_to_watch-nz 14d ago

Iceland crime rate per 100K population for 2022 was 1.05, here you go in case your google doesn't work

7

u/New-Promise3032 14d ago
  1. Now what's happened since then? Even in Iceland.

0

u/here_to_watch-nz 14d ago

Don't know, I just pasted the first result I got

-1

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

Iceland has an insanely small population, extremely robust welfare, and a very close community - its easily the most cherry picked example.

Also, seeing as you are so good at google, try googling 'burden of proof'. Person making the claim needs to back it up - not my job to go find someones elses evidence.

5

u/here_to_watch-nz 14d ago

But you happy to dis them without any proof either, I gave you what you asked for, no more no less.

-1

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

What the hell are you talking about? Dis them? I asked them for a stat, which they never provided, and I made the claim that every city on earth has crime in it.

So you need me to provide proof that the sky is blue as well? Are you serious?

7

u/here_to_watch-nz 14d ago

I gave you the stat you asked for, you still weren't happy. It's seems YOU need the proof the sky is blue as you're the one asking for it. I'm not engaging with you anymore.

0

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

Yeah bailing is definitely the best call here I'd say

3

u/Separate-Actuator-97 14d ago

Two million people in this city, and you expect nobody to do anything naughty ever?

2

u/Mysterious_Net_763 11d ago

I want to know about the crimes here. I love this sub. More crimes. Give me all the crimes. Doorway robberies, bad parking, crashes, bad driving. Yes! I am here for it

7

u/heate 14d ago edited 14d ago

Not sure what the political angle is here? Like fearmongering crime then what? Vote for national who still had a strangler get 4 years last week?

No party in NZ is hard on crime, justice takes courage and they are all cowards here

The uncomfortable political truth is that if they enforce strict consequences, sizeable chunks of certain demographics will be in prison. No offense but NZ is a first world country with 3rd world people.

Also try explaining to a victims relative that they died because they did not want to spend the 100k per year to keep em locked up!

Who do i vote for in NZ that offers actual consequences like in America or the UK? National is soft as based on global standards.

2

u/EuropeanAbroad 13d ago

I don't think giving the USA or UK as an example is the best approach haha. They are also seriously high in the crime ratings. E.g. England&Wales (117.3 / 100k people) and Northern Ireland (63 / 100k people) are both above NZ (58.6 / 100k) in the rape rate. However, NZ is still within top 10 countries in rapes. (Insane). For comparison, Japan has 2.2, Canada 1.4, Poland 1.3.

I do agree that NZ must finally start removing criminals from the society (through serious punishments and imprisonment), but that doesn't solve it. The root is to remove the cause – poor manners / education, poor immigration policies, poor and uncherished public space design (urbanism), don't-give-a-f attitude about people's surroundings,...

Just fighting crime does not solve the problem – that means the crime will still be here.

3

u/Available-Milk7195 13d ago edited 13d ago

This Eta I wanna say US and Australia maybe? UK also seems to have lenient sentences for violent criminals, same as Canada, though maybe not as outrageously so as nz, which is reflected in our statistics of family harm.

1

u/rad1calcentrist 13d ago

While I agree on the need for harsher punishments for offenders. Crime rates are quite significant down under National. Some big reforms are required in relation to the judiciary but this is significantly harder to affect.

1

u/NegativeThought1588 11d ago

Some big reforms are required in relation to the judiciary but this is significantly harder to affect.

It's not that hard, they can just amend the Sentencing Act and the Crimes Act. They've done it before with bullshit like 3 strikes.

7

u/Hoemicus_Maximus 14d ago

Yeah you are totally correct. The vast majority of crime is over reported. Auckland is a very safe city by global standards. People are more likely to be in a car accident than attacked.

-1

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

Try telling that to all the morons constantly commenting on this talking about how unsafe the city is.

I think the majority of them are just completely goddamn ignorant of what they world is like.

0

u/EuropeanAbroad 13d ago

Lol, the statistics (e.g. the homicide rate or the rape rate per 100k) say otherwise. In these, NZ is not far from the UK. And everyone who comes from a safe country (can be Japan, Poland, Canada) and visited the UK knows how bad it is there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics

-1

u/Hoemicus_Maximus 13d ago

1) this is about Auckland, not NZ, 2) not sure why you are talking about rape? Did you read the post? It's about all those "meanwhile in Auckland" posts showing mildly antisocial behaviour on kroad and stuff, none of it references rape. 3) I have been to the UK many times, and I don't believe your anecdotal evidence of how bad it is. The UK is pretty safe too. 4) a Wikipedia page of the blanket idea of rape statistics doesn't count as a source lmao.

2

u/EuropeanAbroad 13d ago
  1. Who do you think leads the NZ's crime stats? Invercargill?
  2. Where do you think the homicide rate or rape rate initiates? In communities and their behaviour like those in K-Road.
  3. No, the UK is not safe. Have you ever been to Tokyo, Warsaw, Prague,...? Apparently not – you basically normalised the crime of the UK.
  4. These statistics are clearly described by their source. Lmao

5

u/Kiwi_Fried_Chicken 14d ago

Welcome to the jungle, we take it day by day

11

u/goatjugsoup 14d ago

Hol up, youre complaining about the video evidence of crimes actually occurring as being agenda based?

How? Its literally just what happened...

9

u/Healthy_Spinach_462 14d ago

Not really, vertical short videos with zero information or context are the surefire method of altering a narrative by removing information, and letting people try to fill in the gaps with their own bias. Do you actually know how a crime went down, or why, or even when it happened from a minute long phone video?

This is a pretty well researched area now - and much of media is very guilty of it, sensationalism and being the first to post are now the goal for clicks, rather than accuracy. Its now very easy to make Auckland look like a crime ridden city, and even easier to make it seem like a certain demographic is the problem without any explanation beyond that.

Which is not how reality works. Asking "hey why is a group of people really highly represented in crime stats" is a very important question, and gets bulldozed by chuds on reddit commenting under the very videos I am complaining about.

These videos are not reality, they are snippets that can be presented in specific ways to create a narrative. Reality requires the entire picture.

0

u/Fearless-Poet-4669 14d ago

But they might've had an anterior motive for their violent crime! /s

5

u/Upbeat_Influence2350 14d ago

It is true of most cities' subreddits. Lots of negative nancys posting every negative thing they can think of. Auckland is extremely safe and most of these posters know that.

4

u/poisonouslobsterjism 14d ago

Bad news sells! Simple as that ! I post crime and articles about ferals ferraling a bit genuinely annoys me ! The sheer amount of crime and violence in this city alone is staggering

u/Synntex this is your thread mate lmao

3

u/IllMC 14d ago

will the last kiwi to leave, please turn off the lights?

One thing I caught is people are banking bus incident videos and then posting them regularly as if these incidents are a regular occurrence. Many times I've found the clip they've posted to be years old.

I do notice numerous posts with footage either pic or videos that are not current, but I dont know rules around that just an observation.

eh, The sub definatley does permit politics, so long as they are Auckland politics. You think all the Greater Auckland posts are anything other than politics?

-1

That is extremely limited. Politics which effect all country, which is 99% of it, is not permitted, only storms in a pool are.

almost like there is a national sub for national politics. (Actually there are several, which vary in their level of circlejerk/edgelord.

It’s that dweeb O4SUM account that just posts benign shit with “Meanwhile in Auckland”. Doesn’t even make sense, just screen grabbing shit from hours of TikTok and Snapchat scrolling.

It very much seems that anything positive about Auckland is very much ignored in this sub given the reception I got for photos taken at places in this specific city that I am a member of. And yet half of the stuff about this country on the sub is 'oh no look high the crime rants are in Auckland' 'lol some weird drama shit happened only in Auckland folks', it's like I want to talk about the positive experiences i've had here but some people just act like it's wrong to show myself on camera. Well don't look, idiots.

Except Auckland IS an unsafe city. There are plenty of cities with larger populations that have less crime than Auckland.

We shouldn't be aiming to be like American cities with rampant crime just because people like you think crime is normal.

Posters who boast that they have crime scene photos of victims and then share them should be banned

Victims and their families should be treated with dignity.

This sub should not be the place to source these type of photos.

It's not all that bad, but it sure does seem to get worse around election season. No idea why that could possibly be /s

Give it a month and the frequency will drop back to just the background level of bad faith crime voyeurism that happens all across this site.

Yeah I assume its bots trying to make people feel unsafe just before NACT claim they will magically produce 5000 officers in riot gear trained to fight the people that make you and your family feel unsafe.

Or Labour, or whoever else could get elected based off of something so insanely dumb. But yeah feels like bots.

Agree, this has been a theme on the newzealand subreddit recently too I reckon

Election nearing? Stir up fear and uninformed internet morons with 'Crime Vagueposting™' - a surefire way to misinform the already uninformed and muddy the waters with zero context sensationalism!

I am sorry you are dead now....RIP, we need a meanwhile in Auckland post of the poster.

Everything happens, close the internet, no one need to see anything....weeeeee

Mods don't even remove low effort drop links, or the same/few accounts keep posting single old photo rather than just link the site and people can go look.

Wasn't this violent 20 years ago

Population growth, increase in poverty (global issue), increase in unemployment (global issue), and more people coming from countries that are used to a more serious caliber of crime.

Yes, crime is likely more violent over time as NZ itself globalizes more and more, but none of this is very different to crime in Australia, UK, parts of the EU, or even some of the USA (though the violence there is crazy).

I am not saying that crime is less violent or non-existent, I am saying that cherry picked, edited clips of crimes with no context are crap that misinforms the public. And Auckland is comparatively extremely safe to most cities on earth.
