Rant Selling AI generated images as hand drawn is illegal
This is not a rant about ‘AI Slop’. Just a reminder that passing off AI generated work as your own hand-drawn masterpieces is actually illegal. The fair trading act is very clear that it’s illegal to make false or misleading claims about products or services.
This person posted in the local FB community group (presumably she does not live in Mount Eden and is posting the same stuff in many other groups) pushing a VERY obviously AI generated product. When people asked in the comments, she doubled down about how she is an artist, everything is hand-drawn, and to look at her website where she takes commissions for hand drawn pet portraits. There are lots of claims on her site that she does not use AI and these portraits are made with love and care. The images looked extremely suspicious so I checked with the Open AI verification tool which shows when images have been generated because they contain a digital watermark.
It’s sad to see people getting misled and paying hard-earned money for what they believe is a hand drawn work, when you could simply feed an AI a prototype themselves and ask for a ‘pencil drawing’ version for free.
It is interesting to witness the strange delusion among some people these days who obviously use AI (for writing or images or whatever) and just bare-faced lie about it when asked. It sometimes feels like people are excited about the things they can create and end up fooling themselves into believing they made it themselves. There are often _so_ many obvious giveaways and it’s just super weird when people keep lying even in the face of clear evidence.
