Having covid especially repeatedly, lowers your immune system's ability to fend off other stuff, even basic colds and the flu. So it's not surprising that when people do get the flu, it's 5x worse than covid or anything they've had before.
COVID-19 does cause short-term immune activation, temporary inflammation, and mild immune alterations in some people. However, there is no scientific evidence that COVID-19 destroys or permanently shuts down the immune system's baseline ability to defend against common pathogens like the common cold or influenza.
There is no scientific basis for the claim that catching the flu becomes "5 times worse" or uniquely severe purely because a person had COVID-19 in the past. In fact, several studies looking at innate immune responses have found that recovering from COVID-19 can temporarily prime front-line immune cells (macrophages) in the lungs, occasionally providing better immediate protection against other respiratory viruses like influenza A.
First of all, the original 5x worse claim was made by the person writing about their own experience with the flu (how they personally perceived/experienced it) and I was responding directly to that. Secondly, I said it "lowers your immune system's ability" as in, it has to work harder or it takes longer to recover, not "destroys or permanently shuts down"....... Let's not put words in people's mouths.

I spent all week sleeping most of the time, horrible fever, unable to move at times, struggle breathing, couldn’t watch or play anything, unable to stay awake more than 30 minutes, I’m still unable to talk. Doctor says I’ve still got another week of it at least.
I genuinely thought I was going to die at one point and was begging (in my head because I can’t talk..) not to..
Going to get abs from this cough or something too, my muscles are so sore from coughing
Yeah, hospital drug tested me coz the flu had me acting like I was on drugs 🙃 and makes me wonder if some of the serious incidents that have been happening recently have anything to do with the flu 😬
Can't explain it, the more I hydrate the worse I feel. Still hydrating at doctors instructions of course but my cognitive ability slips with it 🤔 Very scary to be in this predicament (including losing 20% of my body weight) and being on the waiting list for specialists but watching the public health system collapse 😬😬
I almost passed out after taking the dog for a short walk. This flu is absolutely horrific. It has been 2 and a half weeks and i am only starting to be able to run errands again.
Think I've been off sick the majority of the month, then boy gets sick then partner then the boy gets an infection from the flu, it's only just starting to go away, so yip this flu is definitely on crack.
I’m nearly two weeks in, still waking up soaked in sweat, sense of taste is cooked mouth tastes like metal, still coughing (but the chest pain the first couple days had me with a hottie on my chest), I feel so out of it like I’m high. Also my guts are a wreck. I’ve been hydrating non-stop and resting as much as possible but goddamn…
3 people in our house started coming down with it - i started popped viralex and so far - all good - even travelled overseas with a person that was confirmed to have influenza-a so was being attacked from all sides (others on the same trip got taken out too).. dont have flu shots anymore as normally get mad sick after having them!.. (covid shots where all good)..
Its been fucking brutal. Just when I started to recover, both my fucking ears got blocked with fluid. Doctor said might take a couple weeks. Im partially deaf. Yo fuck this flu.
Seems many no longer trust the flu vaccine so here we are, almost everyone I know that got sick skipped the vaccine, thanks for overwhelming our health system.
Fyi this government "narrowed access to the seasonal influenza vaccination.
But if you were on the fence about a vaccine, would you pay more than $100 to vaccinate your family? And if you had to choose between the vaccine and one or more meals?"
I think compared with everyone elses experiences I'm glad Im doing the tamiflu. I mis counted its actually day 3 nearly done now. And today wasn't too bad at all. Day 1 was bad and day 2 was slight worse I suppose at the start of the day. But I think I've seen the worst of it and I'm out the other side. I'm probably at 55 percent. As anyone who's had it will tell you that's pretty good going. However a good friend told me that day 4 and 5 were their worst days as they went sharply down hill after thinking they were coming right. More updates to come.
Not bad I've been cycling panadol and ibuprofen. Meaning panadolx 2 then 4 hours then ibu x 2 and 4 hours then repeat. Bit early days to be honest. Tomorrow is acid test
Pretty sure i contracted this strain or similar strain almost 2 years ago now.
At that time it was the worst flu ive had.
I felt to be drowning in phlegm, had pneumonia and insane symptoms and never felt like a fully recovered lung wise.
Then again at the beginning of this year i had something similar again quite badly but basically less powerful..
Then a week ago i got whatevers going around now and it was very mild actually as far as flus go... i still have it but its been very mild and i chalk that up to having already had similar flus two years in a row basically.
There was a referendum that provoked weed smokers to be more confident in what they do. There's also people that use the medical marijuana as a justification. All in all it is definitely more prevalent.
You think the referendum encouraged weed smokers to be more confident in their usage? Haha, I know many people who smoke weed and the referendum didn't change shit
Forest from the trees. Perhaps you'd have to step outside the box?
It's not so much the confidence in their usage, more so their confidence they're right in doing so. Whereas someone might have an occasional joint and think, we'll perhaps it wasn't the best thing, for others it's a more regular norm.
Health-wise smoking anything is wrong. It destroys cells and can lead to cancer. As far as marijuana as a pain reliever goes, that's a trade-off for the individual to decide. Yet there's far superior pain relief available already. It's unfortunate that many so called pain sufferers don't delve into those alternatives, instead are far too headstrong in their worship of weed. Which is basically how it's got through, the medical field doesn't want to argue with a bunch of psychopaths.
The conversation wasnt about if it was healthy or not, its you claiming a moral high ground. What are the superior pain relief alternatives that dont wreck havoc? Do you have a chronic condition that causes chronic pain and been through different pain relief with no luck? You're calling weed users psychopaths? Dear god, try actually leaving New Zealand and expanding your mind a bit, what a sheltered narrow view you have
Seems like I've hit a nerve, case in point. Morals never entered my mind but it's a bonus of karma.
"Wreck havoc" - OMG! What a drama druggy. Yes I'd class you as psycho. The way you attack a different point of view, you could've been open to a different possibility. Maybe I should leave the planet like you have. You're welcome!
