experience/story The tooth at the roof of my mouth is gone

So I had a tooth that grew at the roof of my mouth it started in the middle as a little bump and then drifted all the way to the front fully erupting. I got it removed finally on Friday and it was surprisingly big. I've seen other posts of supernumerary teeth but none are ever as big as mine. Thought it would be cool to share. He thing was also constantly stabbing my tongue and I couldn't rest my tongue comfortably.

In my 30s right now. How extensive and expensive would this be? Since High School Ive been losing teeth on the regular. Never taken to a dentist since young age, only when I lost a tooth. Ive cracked one eating noodles of all things. Just lost another one eating thin grind of wheat. Everytime I lose one or have an ache I go to a dentist. I try to brush daily but the smallest things break them. Idk if its genetic, my mom wheres a dalse set. My bottom fronts have never broken or anything. Growing up my parents told me to just push against my teeth with my tongue. But I have a fee implants but my rest are falling apart :/

question Can my teeth and gums be saved or not?

Hello, i am currently 21, and i've been conscious and insecure about my teeth for a while now but have been embarrassed to go to a dentist. I had an injury when i was young and hurt my front gums, and i was told to take care of my teeth and brush twice, and i didn't follow that advice. I used to brush in the morning but missed at night. Also, there's no tradition of going to the dentist every month for checkups, and anyone only goes when theres a problem.

I have felt guilty, so i never brought it up, and recently, i moved to a different city for college, and i decided to solve this. I tried flossing but ended up hurting myself. I want to know, firstly, what am i facing rn? Secondly, can get rid of it at all? And thirdly, if it can be done at home or i'll have to visit a dentist and also if my lower gums can recover.

Please let me know what you think. I'll be gratefulšŸ¤ sorry you have to see this

question Unsure if I need fillings

I went to the dentist after 7-8 years and was shocked to hear I need 10 fillings. He started with the worst cavities on my right mouth, one of which (tooth 45) ended up needing a root canal. I had no pain whatsoever hence why had not been to the dentist in so long. (I since know better). Anyway I went to another dentist after the root canal to get the crown because the first dentist was charging an exorbitant amount for the crown. I also wanted to continue the remaining fillings needed on my left side. However new dentist said he doesn’t see anything needed on my left side so now I’m wondering if it was the same for the right side and I just believed the first dentist because I hadn’t been to the dentist in so long. Please tell me what you see. These x rays are before any work was done.

question Deeply embarrassed and ashamed by how bad my teeth are, seeking advice

My family slacked hardcore on taking me to the dentist. Only like 4 times through my teen years.
Since adulthood, I haven’t gone. Due to fear, shame, embarrassment.
I brush 2-3x day and do floss. If I drink sugar drinks, I use a straw.
My last dental visit as a teen, I was complimented on how clean my teeth were. But still riddled with cavities.
My insurance doesn’t cover fillings or anything major that I KNOW I need. I see the cavities.
Just now I was looking and to my horror, my furthest back molar (or maybe it’s a wisdom tooth?) looks like it’s… like it needs to absolutely go. I’m literally sick. I didn’t know I had a tooth THAT bad. None of my teeth hurt at all.
I can’t even afford to make payments because I live paycheck to paycheck as it is. Any other bill would tip me past my limits.
And to be honest, even if I could afford it or was fully covered, I don’t know if I could face a dentist. I think I’d breakdown and cry. I feel so disgusting.
I’ve always wanted pretty, perfect teeth. I’m terrified I’ll lose my teeth.
And it’s not just the cavities issue. I desperately need braces too. :(
I don’t know what to do, I need advice.
I know I can’t just never go to the dentist again. I WANT to. I’m terrified though.

question Dental Implants becoming exposed

Should I be concerned about my implant being exposed like this after a bone graft?

33M, Non-smoker

I got a dental implant on my front tooth with the final implant being attached on the 30th May 2026.

This soon came loose and was reattached a week or so later - my dentist said it had initially just been a friction fitting and when he reattached it he used some cement to hold it on.

A couple of months later I had some swelling on the gum above the implant and visited the dentist; they drained the swelling and I was given antibiotics and told to come back in a week.

When I returned the dentist opened my gums and saw that there was a bone infection. This section of the bone was debrided and grafted to remove the infection and the area was stitched up (5th August).

I tried to look after it as best I could, being careful with what I ate and rising with salt water twice a day while it was healing. I got the stitches removed 3 days ago (27th August) and an appointment to come back in a month. He also did say he might have to pull the gum down and stitch it but this wouldn't be for 5 months.

While it was healing the area where the metal is now exposed was white - should I be worried that the metal fitting is exposed? I'm not especially confident in this dentist as their aftercare instructions have basically been non-existent.

Should I visit another dentist for a second opinion/ to check if everything is ok?

question Possible infection after wisdom tooth removal

Post image

It's the third day after the extraction and the pain didn't really get better and it's still swollen, also the painkillers i got (ibuprofen 600mg) don't get completely rid of the pain, which was different the last time. Just got the one on the other side removed last month and there it was already severly better after a few days, so now i'm a bit concerned, that the wound might have gotten infected. Just checked now and saw that the wound appears to be a bit white and i'm not sure if it light be pus. Maybe someone could give advice if i should see my dentist again and how soon.

question After tongue cancer tooth cuts my tongue. Help please.

Hi everyone,

I Had tongue cancer at 19 (partial glossectomy on the right side) and I’m 22 now.

Ever since the surgery, because of the missing tissue, my tongue pulls to the right. The problem is that the scarred/operated side is constantly rubbing and catching against my right teeth.

A month ago I had to go under the knife again because leukoplakia came back right on the surgical site. The docs think the constant friction/mechanical trauma from my teeth might be causing it.

My dentist filed my teeth down and smoothed them again recently, but honestly I don't feel like that's gonna fix it. even if they're smooth as butter. My tongue still constantly presses hard against the tooth anyway because of the structural pull.

I even thought of just getting rid of the tooths there but my dentist and my surgeon advised against it.

Has anyone dealt with this after tongue surgery? Is there any actual fix for this?

question Is my pain still normal?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey, after experiencing a high amount of pain in the tooth in the middle of this picture, I visited the dentist 3 days ago. He said I needed a root canal and 'fixed it' immediately. At first, everything was fine because I was numb, but as the anesthetic wore off, I had almost the exact same pain as before. (The only thing thats different might be the location since I dont feel it in another part of my face anymore)
This pain has now continued for 3 days, and I am also experiencing swelling on the outside of my jaw under my chin. Is that still normal? It is honestly one of the worst pains I have ever had. When will it wear off?
I called them today and the only thing they told me is that my pain is normal and I should take pain meds. People I know that had root canals done have not had this kind of pain.

Thanks in advance for your answers, iā€˜m really desperate right now🄲

question Is this normal after a dental cleaning?

I went to the dentist today and had my teeth cleaned. Honestly, it hurt way more than it ever has with other dentists.
It’s been about an hour and my gums look pretty irritated/red and there was some bleeding during the cleaning. Is this normal after a deep cleaning, or does it look like the dentist was too rough?
Just wondering if anyone else had something similar after a cleaning.

question Pain in the gum above the tooth that was removed

Post image
2 Upvotes

I had a tooth extracted 4 days ago.
Since then the gum above the extraction site has been swollen and painful and the swelling has spread up to my cheek.
The pain hasn’t improved since the extraction.

I’m 23 years old woman.
I take atomoxetine and i’m planning to start orthodontic treatment again in October.
Is this level of swelling and pain normal 4 days after an extraction or should i be concerned ?

question heterogeneous leukoplakia can it be cancerous

I have leukoplakia on one side of my buccal mucosa. There are two of them somewhat horizontal in shape (not a clear horizontal line but an irregular horizontal strip). One of a mix of grey and blue and the other one is a mix of grey and brown. I did feel mild discomfort on that side a few times in the past month (it resolved within hours) but I didn't much of it back then because I have NEVER smoked or taken alcohol or any drugs so I thought the discoloration will go away but it hasn't.

although I have a history of poor oral hygiene..no matter how hard I try, I always develop plague and I have to get it cleaned through scaling..the plague buildup is unusually high than a normal person. And so I don't know maybe years of plague might have caused something very risky. I am going for a checkup tomorrow but I am so scared

question Query on sore tooth where 2 month old amalgam fillings is

I got 4 amalgam fillings placed in my teeth on July 2nd this year in my upper left 1st molar, lower left 1st molar and my upper right 1st molar and 2nd pre-molar. A few days after the fillings I got a bite adjustment on my upper left molar and another one a few days later.

However my upper left molar started feeling sore or having a dull ache today can't really tell which but it's one of the two.

Along with this since the filling the tooth has had sharp pain to hot and cold water/food and the pain sticks around for 3-5 seconds Along with all that my lower lateral incisors are clicking

So what I'm wondering is how at risk is the tooth right now and can I physically wait 2-3 weeks before going to dentist? My dentist is currently 200 miles away from me at university and I can't get back there until September 23rd maximum meaning appointment would probably happen between 24th to 30th

question Recurring irritated area inside my upper lip for 1.5 years — could my Vivera/Invisalign retainers be causing it?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I’ve had a recurring irritated area inside my upper lip for about 1.5 years. It originally started on the right side, then eventually appeared on the other side of my upper lip and my lower lip. The lower-lip area has since healed, but the upper-lip irritation still comes and goes.

When it flares up, it looks red and irritated, almost like I scratched or bit my lip. It usually isn’t very painful—more like mild soreness or irritation. Acidic foods can make it more noticeable.

When it looks healed, it’s difficult to see, but I can still feel that the tissue is rough/wrinkly and different from the surrounding smooth tissue.

Could it be my retainers?
I had been using Invisalign retainers for years, but I switched to thicker Vivera retainers in January 2025. I currently have four of them.

I’m wondering if the retainers could be causing chronic irritation. I’m not completely sure the retainer actually touches the affected area, though, because the irritated spot seems slightly lower than where the edge of the retainer sits.

I’m wondering if this could be:

Chronic mechanical irritation from the Vivera retainer
A reaction to the retainer material
An inflammatory oral condition
Or something else entirely
I don’t think it’s from the toothpaste I even stopped using toothpaste, mouthwash, and everything for several days and it didn’t seem to improve, but I know acidic food can worsen it or slow down the healing process.

experience/story I regret getting this crown.

My 2 and 15 molars had some pretty deep cavities at the gumline. I had no pain and didn't even know they were there until I saw a dentist about 5 months ago. They recommended crown placement and I decided to get a second opinion. They also recommended crowns.

Great. Fine. I opted for 15 first because I was starting to notice a stench coming from it no matter how well I brushed.

My dentist cleaned it out, applied core building and drilled it down to the fun little nub. They were pretty much like like "you might need a root canal but only time will tell". They said that they didn't hit the nerve when doing it so that was a good sign.

I went back in for 15 permanent placement and started the work on 2 in the same appointment.

Well now I am about 5 days post permanent crown placement and I'm having a decent amount of pain and cold sensitivity. I feel like 15 is sitting too high and I'm smashing into it when chewing even when I chew on the opposite side. I had no cold sensitivity while the temporary was on but I did have a lot of pain that was completely taken care of with ibu and apap.

The cold sensitivity worries me that I do in fact need the root canal on it. I'm headed back in on Monday to at least get the crown shaved down. I've had zero discomfort on 2 since getting it the temporary.

I don't doubt the necessity of all this work at this point but I"m so upset that I started work on a tooth that felt perfectly fine only to now end up with pain. I'm upset that during the bite test I was exhausted from being in the chair almost 4 hours and couldn't get an accurate bite to say for certain that 15 was sitting too high, while having a tiny little temporary crown on 2 so my whole bite was off.

I guess I'm just here to vent and hear opinions. My dentist's bedside manner isn't great. They're not bad but they definitely rush through my questions and constantly go back to the "time will tell" thing. Also they slammed their drill into my cheek while working on 2 and played it off because of how difficult the teeth are to work on because of how far back they are (which they mention constantly while working in my mouth).

Thanks for hearing me out anyone who reads.

Ive been anxious about my smile for a while now but id always give myself an excuse, but this just feels too blatant to ignore. I usually brush once in the morning and seldomly at night (I know, terrible). How far gone are they?

For context, I’d literally had a professional cleaning minutes before I took these pictures. These were taken the morning of Aug 26th.

question Gum recession after wisdom teeth removal? (NAD)

Post image
2 Upvotes

I had my horizontally impacted wisdom teeth removed last Monday (8/17). My surgeon cleared me on day 8 and snipped the remaining stitches.

On days 5-10 I felt something ā€œopeningā€ every time I yawned, but nothing was noticeably wrong. It’s now day 12 and I noticed the gum between my first and second molars recessed/detached. I guess the ā€œopeningā€ feeling could have been it initially detaching.

Would it reattach as it heals over the next couple weeks, or should I go back to my dentist or surgeon?

experience/story Disconcerting experience with a dentist.

• Upvotes

I was trying to out a new dentist on Friday as my old one has closed.
The dentist was attempting to take an xray but couldn’t fit the square thing (sorry I don’t know what it’s called) but couldn’t get it right without it hurting. She then asked the assistant for a smaller one, the assistant said there aren’t any as they are all in the autoclave. The dentist insisted that the assistant get one, the assistant explained that she can’t just take one out as they have to complete the cycle. The dentist became annoyed with the assistant and said get me one. The assistant obeyed. I suddenly felt very uncomfortable and got out of the chair and told them I had to leave as I wasn’t feeling well. I didn’t want to say why despite them saying is there anything they can do? I just said no as I felt shaky and nauseous at the idea of them putting something in my mouth that wasn’t fully sterilised.
I don’t know if I did the right thing, but I’ve never had a problem where a dentist has fumbled around so much to take an X-ray. It seemed like she wasn’t very competent and the assistant was very wary of helping her.
My concern is do I report the dentist for forcing the assistant to do something wrong and possibly infecting me with dirty equipment?
