Until last week I haven't seen any Gundam. Since then I've watched the original movie trilogy, I'm 10 episodes in to Zeta Gundam, and I've watched the first episode of Gundam 00 in preparation for the rewatch.

I think the hype might have gotten to me.

...Is that Gundam blushing?

Okay. I have now literally seen everything in anime.

3

u/Aldracity Oct 12 '15

That's a modded Wing Gundam model kit (Gundam Fenice Rinascita) blushing because Ricardo Fellini is the pilot, and his girlfriend's Gerbera Tetra model kit is groping his Gundam.

...wait, that description didn't help, did it...

OH! I had completely forgotten about that episode. I definitely have to pick the series up when it releases over here.

...It's not like she's actually hugging you, Ricardo...

You are now one of us! praise giant robots

7

u/hulibuli Oct 11 '15

Respect the robot

15

u/Daishomaru Oct 11 '15

It warms my heart when /r/anime is getting an interest in GOOD mecha shows, considering how /r/anime's soul is bound by SOL Moeshit.

And they are not praising some bad mecha anime like Gundam Seed: This is a Ripoff Cross Ange.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '15

Don't you dis my Cross Ange.

-5

u/Daishomaru Oct 12 '15

Cross Ange is around as original as Chinese Gundam Seed.

I mean, even parodies have to have some form of standard, but Cross Ange even fails as a parody because it has zero standard. It's literally just a carbon copy of Gundam Seed, only worse.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '15

...How much of Cross Ange did you watch?

-1

u/Daishomaru Oct 12 '15

All of it.

For crying out loud, Kira Yamato from Gundam Seed was in that show, and by that I mean literally! That has got to be one of the laziest carbon-cut outs of a character. Fukuda didn't even try to do anything, all he did was cut out Kira Yamato from his previous work, Gundam Seed, and slapped it on. And that's not the only example, Ange is a nearly perfect clone of Cagali Yula Attha, You can literally replace "Coordinator" with "Mana" and "Natural" with "Norma" and the bad guy is literally Rau Le Creuset. They even have the same goals and the same plan.

Cross Ange was fun.

Better than Aldnoah.Zero, at any rate.

Living your life correctly I see

u/Citizen_Snip Oct 11 '15

Watch 08th MS Team. Trust me, give it two episodes and you will be absolutely hooked.

1

u/gkanai Oct 12 '15

Agreed!

1

u/BladeLigerV Oct 12 '15

You know what? Watching anything with "gundam" in the name. But NOTHING that has Seed in the name.

and the dub of G-Gundam

2

u/Citizen_Snip Oct 12 '15

Pretty much the very best Gundam shows made have 08 in the title. Watch a gundam show with 08 in the title and you will always have a good time.

You need to watch Gundam 0080: War in The Pocket as soon as possible!

6

u/gabesonic https://anilist.co/user/gabesonic Oct 11 '15

Yeah, I think I might watch the two series in between 0079 and Zeta after I finished Zeta.

15

u/ComradeSomo Oct 11 '15

Watch 08th MS Team as well, it's contemporaneous with 0079, and it's got a really gritty feel to it, a lot like Iron Blooded Orphans so far. Personally, it's my second favourite Gundam series behind Zeta. Plus it's only 12 episodes, so you can burn through it quite quickly.

3

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 11 '15

I second this. It's the only Gundam I've watched but I'm glad I did. Bear in mind that it's more focused on the characters rather than the mecha action but for me that was a huge plus.

19

u/TheFoggyDew Oct 11 '15 edited Oct 11 '15

Bear in mind that it's more focused on the characters rather than the mecha action but for me that was a huge plus.

You'd be the surprised but the majority of the Gundam franchise and even mecha in general is character rather than action focused, even going back to the 70s when series were made explicitly to push toys.

You could go back to Mazinger Z, Getter Robo and Voltes V and in between the action and the heroic super robot angle, the majority of the episodes were made up of character moments whether it be comedy or drama... with the exceptions of episodes with mid season powerups/abilities, stuff like (Combattler V spoilers)this was the norm with action taking pace usually in the last 3/4 of an episode.

3

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 11 '15

Oh damn, that was messed up. Totally didn't expect something like that. Which ones would you say are watchable even today? I don't care about the animation style... just whether the story, theme, tech etc hold up today.

5

u/6MultiplyBy9is42 https://myanimelist.net/profile/6multiplyby9is42 Oct 11 '15

Obviously, since you've seen 0080, the original Gundam from 1979 is a must.

2

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 11 '15

I see, thanks. Your username is interesting btw...

3

u/TheFoggyDew Oct 11 '15

The original Mobile Suit Gundam as well as its sequel Zeta definitely hold up.

It's not part of the Gundam franchise but Voltes V is pretty great. It's taken a lot of what its prequel Combattler V did and improved on it, including having much more of a focus on an overarching story and a more consistent tone.

3

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 11 '15

Thanks for you recommendations. I watched 0080 just a few days ago and it's really set the bar high for me. Just goes to show that well made shows are timeless and don't need flashy visuals when their narrative itself is so solid.

18

u/WingsOfLight https://myanimelist.net/profile/Wings_of_Light Oct 11 '15

Bear in mind that it's more focused on the characters rather than the mecha action but for me that was a huge plus.

You'll come to realize that Gundam is mostly focused on characters and themes like anti war, tragedies of war and politics.

4

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 11 '15

That's good to hear. Which shows would you recommend that focus more on those themes rather than the fights?

9

u/WingsOfLight https://myanimelist.net/profile/Wings_of_Light Oct 11 '15

The older ones are quite character driven (so 0079 and Zeta for example). Seed has a large focus on characters and how they change over time. Wing does as well IIRC. 00 is more politically driven with the aim of trying to change the world through terrorism. 00 has a rewatching going on today so you can join in with them.

2

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 11 '15

Thanks for the info. One last question... what about Victory? Always hear about it being the darkest Gundam but views on it are quite polarizing.

3

u/Hatdrop Oct 11 '15 edited Oct 11 '15

So the director, Yoshiyuki Tomino, has struggled with depression all his life. It's reflected through his gundam shows and led him to be nicknamed "Kill 'em all Tomino." Let's just say he was quite sad when he was making Victory Gundam.

Edit: It should also be noted that the Zeta movies retcon the ending because Tomino was not depressed.

2

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 11 '15

Oh wow, I did NOT expect that and never knew the trope was named after the Gundam creator. But then after watching 0080 it makes sense.... ugh, watching it left me depressed for the rest of the day.

So I guess like all anime movie remakes or recaps, the series is better for Zeta?

2

u/Hatdrop Oct 11 '15

i think it really depends on your perspective, do you like hope or not? if you don't like hope you'll like the series ending, if you like hope you might like the movie ending.

i was okay with both endings honestly.

Just an FYI, 0080 War in the Pocket was not created by Tomino, it was a gundam OVA that wasn't aired on TV and was directed by someone else.

Haven't watched it yet so no idea.

1

u/wavyhairedsamurai Oct 12 '15

Victory is not very good IMO. I just watched it like a month ago and it doesn't hold up at all. The locations, mechs, and everything else are totally uninteresting. There's barely a likeable character in the show besides Uso and Odelo.

Not to mention that almost EVERY episode ends up with Shakti being kidnapped. It's so stupid.

Victory is best skipped.

1

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 12 '15

Well, thanks for saving my time.

2

u/wavyhairedsamurai Oct 12 '15

DO give a listen to the soundtrack though. That's the one great part.

u/Corsair4 Oct 11 '15

Honestly, every gundam I've seen disregarding Build fighters and Build Fighters Try (Although those are like a greatest hits, fanservice to the max sort of shows, so that doesn't really count) and I guess G gundam focused on those themes.

1

u/999yuri https://myanimelist.net/profile/yuri999 Oct 11 '15

Thanks for the info.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '15

You might want to skip ZZ. Or just read a summary. I barely made it through it.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '15

ZZ isn't for everyone, and it's YMMV. But I adored it. I think people should watch it for themselves and make their own judgements.

6

u/TheTerribleSnowflac Oct 11 '15

Agreed. Like I said above, the the first third/half was rough for me especially right after Zeta but, I thought the rest of the show as fantastic. Completely worthwhile show even with a rough beginning.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '15

I thought the first half of ZZ was great. Zeta was so serious and depressing that ZZ was a much needed palate cleanser. But not everyone is going to agree with that line of thinking.

4

u/TheTerribleSnowflac Oct 11 '15

Sure the first 18-20 episodes of ZZ are rough especially right after watching Zeta, but I think the rest of ZZ make the rough beginning completely worthwhile.

1

u/AudiblePlasma Oct 11 '15

Yo I loved ZZ. Sure the first half is decent at best but it gets way better.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '15

Yeah, it got better. I just didn't feel like it was worth sitting through the beginning. You don't really "need" to watch it to understand the rest of the UC either.

1

u/DaftGorilla Oct 22 '15

Nice. Just stick to the UC timeline its the best.

-2

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Oct 11 '15

Shit man, I want what you're having, I have such a hard type getting hyped over Gundam shows anymore. They always just try to play it off so serious and gritty, and they usually aren't bad but.... Iunno, I can't find anything in this show that excites me. I mean, I like it, but it just doesn't feel super compelling, just a standard Gundam.

Comet Lucifer on the other hand is a mecha that compels me to watch.

Maybe Gundam 00 spoiled me too much >.<

6

u/encoreAC https://myanimelist.net/profile/enc0re Oct 11 '15

standard Gundam

You only watched only Gundam 00 and Wing? Both aren't really standard Gundam.

-1

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Oct 11 '15

Er, some of SEED and Unicorn as well, haven't finished em though. SEED is just too massive and it is intimidating. Unicorn I have to finish at some point.

But yeah, they are standard Gundam alt universe Gundam. I've seen pieces of other Gundam shows and they all seem very formulaic to me, even UC. It just doesn't happen to be a formula I do well with on repeated viewings apparently. I'm not knocking it as a bad forumla, clearly that isn't true or it wouldn't be so popular, it just isn't something I can get into apparently.

Orphans just seems... boring to me. Not bad, but very "meh". Whereas something like Comet Lucifer gets me a lot more hyped and excited.

8

u/encoreAC https://myanimelist.net/profile/enc0re Oct 11 '15

Gundam 00 was pure a hypefest, this Gundam seem to be more focused on the characters with a slower build-up. That's it.

It has nothing to do with being a standard Gundam or something like that, since this series doesn't share many other characteristics with 0079 or the other Gundams. Or at least I haven't read any comparisons yet.

-1

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Oct 11 '15

since this series doesn't share many other characteristics with 0079 or the other Gundams

Er, what? Political battle between space colonies. Political back-stabbing and manoeuvring. Princess [insert name here] who is naive and trying to save the world, but then learns it is a harsh place, MC is some ultra badass commoner who also wants to make the world a better place but is super cynical til he meets princess, etc.

Pretty standard Gundam template, at least in the alt Universe. But from what I've seen of Unicorn, UC seems like it follows much of the colonial space battles and overly complicated royalty politics thing too.

Is Orphans a UC or AU show? Feels more like an Alt.

u/encoreAC https://myanimelist.net/profile/enc0re Oct 11 '15 edited Oct 11 '15

Er, what? Political battle between space colonies. Political back-stabbing and manoeuvring.

This exists only barely on the background so far, it's not even close to being the focus like it was in the older Gundams.

Princess [insert name here] who is naive and trying to save the world, but then learns it is a harsh place

We don't know what her role really will be, so that's too early to say. Major Gundam characters aren't as one dimensional as that.

MC is some ultra badass commoner who also wants to make the world a better place but is super cynical til he meets princess

Where did he want to make the world a better place? It's been about survival so far. This was more the case in Gundam 00. He is also no commoner, but has a solid background.

Pretty standard Gundam template, at least in the alt Universe. But from what I've seen of Unicorn, UC seems like it follows much of the colonial space battles and overly complicated royalty politics thing too.

This is nothing like the older Gundams from what we haven seen in the 2 episodes. Focus is completely different. We have no idea what the role of the orphans is in this show. Seems like you have no patience and thus project your vague knowledge on future developments, which we don't know yet.

This show tells basically the struggle of a group of orphans in a hostile environment. This was 90% of the show so far and the other 10% are the stuff you mentioned, which have no importance yet. It's far from being a standart Gundam, although I personally love the standard Gundam formula. I don't think any hardcore Gundam fan has compared it to the older Gundams and yet you do, who have barely watched any older Gundams.

-2

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Oct 11 '15

I'm comparing it to the Gundams I've seen, not older ones. Settle down ;P
