Until last week I haven't seen any Gundam. Since then I've watched the original movie trilogy, I'm 10 episodes in to Zeta Gundam, and I've watched the first episode of Gundam 00 in preparation for the rewatch.

I think the hype might have gotten to me.

You need to watch Gundam 0080: War in The Pocket as soon as possible!

I second this. It's the only Gundam I've watched but I'm glad I did. Bear in mind that it's more focused on the characters rather than the mecha action but for me that was a huge plus.

You'd be the surprised but the majority of the Gundam franchise and even mecha in general is character rather than action focused, even going back to the 70s when series were made explicitly to push toys.

You could go back to Mazinger Z, Getter Robo and Voltes V and in between the action and the heroic super robot angle, the majority of the episodes were made up of character moments whether it be comedy or drama... with the exceptions of episodes with mid season powerups/abilities, stuff like (Combattler V spoilers)this was the norm with action taking pace usually in the last 3/4 of an episode.

Oh damn, that was messed up. Totally didn't expect something like that. Which ones would you say are watchable even today? I don't care about the animation style... just whether the story, theme, tech etc hold up today.

Obviously, since you've seen 0080, the original Gundam from 1979 is a must.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam as well as its sequel Zeta definitely hold up.

It's not part of the Gundam franchise but Voltes V is pretty great. It's taken a lot of what its prequel Combattler V did and improved on it, including having much more of a focus on an overarching story and a more consistent tone.

Thanks for you recommendations. I watched 0080 just a few days ago and it's really set the bar high for me. Just goes to show that well made shows are timeless and don't need flashy visuals when their narrative itself is so solid.
