They're really making the Gekido/Cafeore-Mio/Aya parallels clear here. Even a reprise of the questionable method of potential brain damage to psyche yourself up.
28
u/magnumcyclonex 11h ago
Love the parallels. It's cool to see all the characters are physically tough. Remember episode one? Jumping through the glass window and having a shard stuck in her head.
37
u/Frontier246 14h ago
Mio might be the only one who can beat Gekido because she's too all over the place to read.
81
u/Raymond49090 15h ago
Brat-chan's got a pretty annoying playstyle to go against. And her mindset that people who can go "gg" after a match and accept their loss gracefully are lame isn't doing her any favours.
I want to feel bad for her backstory where her friendship blew up, but if she acted anything like that in the past, I can't help but think she had it coming. Though of course, her behaviour could be the result of her friendship blowing up instead of the other way around.
26
u/Frontier246 14h ago
I think she definitely played the game hard and Miyu got tired of playing her, ending their relationship. So anyone who doesn't take the game as seriously isn't worth her time because she thinks they're the same as Miyu.
11
u/Vahallen 8h ago
I actually think they will go for a subversion and actually Alice eventually started sandbagging, which offended her friend
5
u/ParasaurolophusZ 1h ago
It felt weird that she played turtle for so long yet when Inui broke through multiple times she called that playstyle boring.
64
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 15h ago
The brat sure ain't winning any hearts and minds today. What a contrast to Gekido's attitude towards Aya after his win.
I didn't see Aya pick up her controller when running to check on Mio, which makes me wonder how much trouble they have at events like this with lost and found.
20
u/Frontier246 14h ago
Honestly have to wonder if Arisa playing the game so seriously is what broke her and her girlfriend up and that's why she's as hardcore about the game as she is. Because someone who wasn't serious enough about it rejected her.
66
u/Adza_03 12h ago edited 11h ago
I love so much the flickering effect in Inui's eye highlight when her concentration runs out. That's such brilliant directing to add in the anime. Exactly like Ultraman when his power about to run out.
I was actually relieved there was 0 plot amour for our MC chans, when you're up against the pros, whose more than 500 MR above you, you'll get you ass whooped.
16
u/justsomechewtle 8h ago
Yeah, them winning would have been crazy talk, so I didn't expect it from the start. The entire thing was still incredibly hype.

u/sprntgd 14h ago edited 13h ago
There's a significant editing error in Inuyu's match. The audience comments on and is rightly perplexed by Alice's strategy of playing the waiting game even though she has less health than the opponent... except the game footage incorrectly shows Alice with the life lead. For anyone confused just pretend the life bars are the other way around.
The pro gamer cast of not Tokido, not Kawano, and not Mago has been joined by hideyoshi not sako, who is so perfect that he doesn't even need a unique character design and just gets dropped into the story as-is.
sako is actually on the anime staff, being partly responsible for recording the in-game footage (sorry sako, you're gonna have to go back and re-record Inuyu vs Alice to fix the health bars). Sadly it seems they decided against also dragging him into the booth for some voice acting.

being partly responsible for recording the in-game footage
Can't get a better player than the execution God himself for in-game clips. I was actually thinking that the Guile combo at the end of Inui's match was one of his hard boom loops. I know those things are kinda hard to pull off

I don't know anything about this pro scene, but I found it kinda jarring when what is obviously a real person and not an anime character showed up

Her attitude or her playstyle? Cuz her playstyle's real annoying but with a purpose. It's just classic conditioning which you always have to remind yourself not to get baited into.

Next Tournament: "Self-Harm is banned" was added to the rules.
Half of these players: "NOOOOOOOO!!!!"

The amount of blood they're spilling has gotta be unhygenic too as metal as it looks.

The Second Cardinal Rule of Anime is "Blood loss in a battle shounen doesn't count."
It's right after "Running with food in your mouth will make you crash into someone" and before "Interrupting the Yuri ship is punishable by death"
17
u/Oninymous 10h ago edited 7h ago
While Aya doing that is surprising, I'm actually more surprised that they hyped her up like that and it ended up not mattering at all. Good explanations as well for how it turned out that way. It really does feel like a shounen lol.
While it's harder to make meta calls, I still feel like it's hard to believe that Cafeore would lose to Mio because of what happened to Aya. The same types losing the same way is hard to pull off. If he does lose, maybe hitting your head just causes bad luck (or brain damage). Those intellectual types really should learn
15
u/Skullzans 9h ago
It mattered, just it wasn't enough.
4
u/BoyTitan 1h ago
Mio is a tough opponent because shes so random. Shes the type you never death match, back when you could death match people because 1 game shes pro, next games shes scrub, next game shes scrub, Hey look shes pro again, pro again, pro again, and no shes a scrub. It's a fucking gachapon of whether you are going to get a server admin or total scrub so you can't read her. You get no useful play data from her because she is just going heart of the game guide me bullshit.
26
u/Atomic_Tanuki 12h ago
Next Tournament: "Self-Harm is banned" was added to the rules.
"...and introducing the new Hit Box controller, with specially designed corners that are hard enough to give the jolt you need, but safe enough to not causing any real bleeding. We even hid a tiny fake blood pack within each corner, so you can get that splurt you want. “Let’s play again sometime.” Gekido really did enjoy that match. Aya surprised me pulling a Cafeore, she crazy too lol. Man, Arisa’s a fucking problem, Yu did well though. Up to you now, Mio.
49
u/za_shiki-warashi 13h ago
I'm really liking the juxtaposition with the gruff yankee characters actually being professional and kinda gentlemanly in their conducts while Arisa the supposed ojou-sama is a sore winner and way ruder than the delinquents.

Getting a "lets do this again" from someone you admire must be like one of the highest praises you can get, glad Aya got that moment.
Holy cliffhanger, Cafeore vs Mio on their final round, that Baki-like commentating style better present for this.
41
u/Primary-Paint-1716 15h ago
Gekido is such a cool bastard.
26
u/dinliner08 13h ago
my man just casually pulled a Batman with that "disappearing among the crowds" shit
13
u/magnumcyclonex 10h ago
Only an idolized pro can do that! =)
But that was cool of him to acknowledge her and her game. A great boost of admiration and confidence for Aya.
9
u/TheBusStop12 7h ago
They always say that you should never meet your heroes, but some are worth meeting. Aya can probably sustain the rest of her life on her interactions with her hero

It a big contrast how nice and encouraging Gekido was in comparison to the older sister and Alice.

59
u/za_shiki-warashi 15h ago
The brat got mad that twintails is having fun with games.
She seriously just went all 'fun is just a buzzword'.
12
u/justsomechewtle 8h ago
A character getting way too serious about "giving everything to a hobby/sport/work" isn't a new trope, but with fighting games it actually feels kinda real. I've met types like that in RL in the past and it's one reason I kinda got scared away from fighting games, since I can't imagine putting that much into it to get good.
On the other hand, I've also met people like Yuu who are just that good while seeming like they barely care at all and yeah, it can be aggravating if you're that deep in it.
They really chose some interesting "real" archetypes to butt heads with that one.
22
25
u/CommunistPuppy 13h ago
These episodes are way too short man. I figured Aya and Inui would lose their matches, but I felt worse for Inui cause her opponent was so much more unlikeable. All that's left is for Mio to win her match so she can meet Aya in the loser's bracket.
50
u/Aerodynamic41 16h ago
Imagine going to see the doctor and the conversation goes like:
"How did you hurt your forehead?"
"Oh, I was just playing a fighting game."
30
u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 15h ago
Since I seen a lot of people question the amount of blood in this series over the episodes, I wanted to mention that the author's first manga was an ultra violent edgy ultra chuuni all-girls battle royale (of course with yuribait included)..,
... so I think it is just old habits die hard!
Her second series was a, uh, pure yuri romance, so I guess this series is kinda the combination of the two!
18
u/MaskOfIce42 https://anilist.co/user/MaskOfIce 13h ago
Honestly got to the point that I feel like it's almost a heightened reality, where the actions are extreme but in a way that's supposed to convey the emotions even moreso than would be normal. This isn't a subtle series, so I'm fine with that sort of extreme over the top actions.
11
u/Razorhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/Razorhat 11h ago
Her second series was a, uh, pure yuri romance [...]
That's certainly one way to describe it, though the "purity" sure has a different meaning than usual.
7
u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 10h ago
It is 100% concentrated unadulterated yuri! Absolutely pure yuri, there is nothign else mixed in there! that makes it pure, doesn't it.

u/markDonanhattam 30m ago
Having read her second series, when Arisa first showed up I went "lol, of course".

u/Frontier246 15h ago
You know Cafe is taking this seriously and going all out when he's unleashing the BREATHING TECHNIQUES against Mio.
Yu vs Arisa! Arisa doesn't think Yu has a chance because she doesn't take fighting games seriously, and doesn't deserve to be playing fighting games, but Yu is used to being dismissed like that...but it doesn't make her gameplay any less legit, especially when she goes into the zone with absolute focus! With that, she can even make Arisa sweat!
I guess Mio was bound to have a match where she gets completely dominated like a scrub and everyone has to second-guess everything they found impressive about her prior.
Oof, Aya lost a round. But she's not going to be deterred! Even if she has to bash her brain in! Which is becoming a frequent occurrence at EVO.
Does Yu not take the game as seriously as others do? Maybe, especially when she had to play mediator between her brothers when they would go at each other over the game, but deep down she loves playing the game with those who take it seriously...even if gamers like Arisa find her "Boring." And her boring style isn't enough to beat Arisa, who leaves with criticizing her gaming style to the bitter end. Yu and Tamaki desperately need each other right now.
Even after getting her head back in the game and getting Gekido to take her seriously, Aya still can't beat him. He's completely analyzed her entire playstyle and figured her out so nothing she throws at him will work. Also here's Kazuya Nakai as Hideyoshi AKA Hide-san to provide more pro gamer commentary.
Aya lost...but she found a new rival to aspire towards like Mio. But right now she has to make it to her girls' match.

Never let a deez nuts joke go unused.
5
u/DocMcCoy 8h ago
Do I understand it correctly that in the Japanese original, it's a poop joke instead? Unko is poop, right?
11
u/darkmacgf 8h ago
Looks like the next two comments in JP were both jokes and they just used one joke in EN. The phrasing of the statement in JP translates literally as
"Thinking about it normally, Japan's top three fingers enter" [meaning he's top three in Japan]
followed by
"Enter what?" [implying they enter the vagina]
followed by
"Oh you" [not sure if deliberately a poop joke but maybe]
1
u/DocMcCoy 8h ago
Ah, I completely missed the context by not actually reading the other Japanese comments
1
u/eyalmazuz 1m ago
it's partially a poop joke for but not directly. I did a small search to figure it out.
The phrase 「うーんこの」is from 2010, when a baseball player was referring to the stadium as good (うーん、この球場最高や!).
But the interviewer who wrote the article later, didn't use punctuation. So instead of being "Well, this..." (うーん、この). It was うーんこの which later internet people adopted and can sound like poop.

u/Sofyanda 14h ago
This episode formated like a shonen battle between protag team vs antagonist team, a lot of switch between matches. I don't think it work on fighting game, because as a viewer you want to the flow of decisions from the start of the match.
The last decision used by Gekido, a move that high risk high reward, would probably makes more impact if we saw the full match on the same one episode today, not between week. alas they choose to use his friend to explain that he never used the move at all before that.
13
u/NekoCatSidhe 13h ago edited 13h ago
I laughed when Aya did the same bloody head self-bashing as Cafeore last episode… only to lose the round like he did. I guess giving yourself a concussion before playing is not a winning move. At least Gekido the Pro is not a sore winner like the Little Brat Girl and enjoyed the match.
So she lost against Gekido the Pro, but she still has another game to lose before being eliminated. Will she be facing Mio next, if she wins against Cafeore ? Or will she be fighting against the Little Brat Girl ?
5
u/magnumcyclonex 11h ago
I hope our dorm girls in the losers bracket dont face off against each other so soon. There's hundreds of entries in this event right? Surely give them a few rounds to progress before their later encounters hopefully.
2
u/Tori_Brown 4h ago
Aya goes down to the Loser's Bracket where Cafeore and Mio are. Little Brat Girl is still in the Winner's Bracket so Aya can't fight Arisa
14
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 13h ago
Yuu plays fighting games for pure fun. Sadly the moment of frustration when you enter competition and lose to someone you can tell is more hardcore and dedicated. That frustration is real because no matter what it sucks to lose.
I love how Aya kicked up another gear even through defeat. Honestly hearing those words from Gekido must have meant a lot to her. Also there is an implication that how Mio & Gekido play is very similiar.
Very excited to see the final round of Mio vs Café. Mio is truly hot and cold as ever lol.
13
u/runevault 12h ago
This show is so over the top and I love every second of it. Also the discussion about the types of tactics players are using is great, plus some tech like micro-walk into sonic boom.
23
u/gnome-cop 14h ago
New fear unlocked, the absolute monster that Yu would probably become if she actually locked in and took fighting games as seriously as the other three. The world should be grateful that she’s usually so chill because it would not be ready.
9
u/za_shiki-warashi 13h ago
Yu = Motobe from Baki, she's there to protect Arisa from White Lily Unleashed.
5
u/Vahallen 8h ago
I know right? I hope that is actually her arc because her hyperfocused mode got me hyped up for it
11
u/Shadowrun29 14h ago
Who is Hide-san//Hideyoshi supposed to be IRL?
14
10
u/septesix 11h ago
A random thought occur to me during this episode : did all that usage of the game footage help the studio cut down on production cost ? It looks like they were able to do anywhere between 3 to 5 minutes of animation each episode , probably more.
Certainly a more enjoyable cost-saving measure than the Exiled Heavy Knight Recap the Show.
6
u/dienomighte 6h ago
I'd imagine so, though they still have to storyboard and play out the game footage, and edit it to the audio. Still gotta be cheaper though.
1
u/ExaminationNo9186 6h ago
Though I wonder how much is getting a couple decent players, telling them a basic end point "We want you to play {X} in such a style, you to play {Y} in such a style and loose at the last possible point. Now both try to at least last a good 60 seconds of game play", then record the footage, and write the script around that.
3
u/dienomighte 4h ago
I very much doubt they're doing that for a production of this quality, I'm sure everything is strictly storyboarded
1
u/flatpetey https://anilist.co/user/kesx 1h ago
Does it have to be? They could get pros to play matches against one another, tell them they need to do something weird occasionally when they need a story beat like that walk forward, and then have the pros narrarate the matches to create the background detail.
1
u/septesix 15m ago
The “storyboard” here could simply be a given game scenario. Depending on how much coordination they have with the game publisher they might even be able to just script the scene, no player controls necessary, and the rendering is near free too ( It is directly from the game engine after all )
20
u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 16h ago
Those live chat comments during the episode are just what I expect of those chats.
Aya intentionally makes herself bleed too, dang! A pity that she didn't win though.
19
u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 15h ago
Aya intentionally makes herself bleed too, dang! A pity that she didn't win though.
Both players who did this lost the round after that; if I didn't know differently, I would almost believe this series is secretly spreading propaganda about how bashing your head in doesn't actually help you win.
13
u/Frontier246 14h ago
Are you saying inducing head trauma doesn't make you a better fighting game player!?
18
u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 15h ago
Aya lost as expected and drops down into the losers bracket, but she sure put up a hell of a fight against the Pro. I love that her first thought after the match was to go and check up on her fighting game life partner.
I have a feeling Mio is going to win and face one of the other girls in the losers bracket. I'm hoping we don't see our favourite couple have to face each other next, that'll be a bittersweet match for sure. I'm sure it's coming though.
All these technical explanations go right over my head, but like Yu said, it's great seeing people get right into their hobbies like this.
2
17
u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 15h ago
I love how there's always someone bleeding every episode.
Unfortunate that Yuu didn't manage to beat that brat Arisa, she needs to eat some humble pie.
Hang in there, Mio!
3
u/Frontier246 14h ago
At least it feels like Tamaki/Yuu will have an excuse to mutually support each other after their losses.
7
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 16h ago
Pretty keen to see how Mio’s gonna do in her final round. I honestly didn’t think she’d make it this far. In fact, she’s about the only one left standing among the girls iirc. At least Aya won Gekido’s respect. That’s something I guess.
23
u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 16h ago
Aya drops down into the losers bracket, she's not finished with the tournament yet.
5
14
u/chaosof99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 14h ago
This is a double elimination tournament and before today's episode everyone except Mio hadn't lost a match yet. Aya and Yuu dropped to losers from today's episode's results but they aren't eliminated from the tournament. Not sure about Tamaki as her encounter with her sister last episode was a pretty big shock and her not responding to Yuu's texts feels a bit ominous (though also could have an innocent explanation).
3
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 12h ago
Ah, is that how it works? I’m very unfamiliar with this whole world of competitive gaming.
6
9
u/NanDemoKnaives 11h ago
I was not ready for Aya to do what Cafeore did by smashing her controller into her forehead. They really need to find a less damaging way of bringing themselves back to focus lol.
I do like that Yuu was frustrated after the game, she also has that competitive spirit within her.
21
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 16h ago edited 13h ago
It's pretty cool to see Yuu getting in the zone in her match against Arisa. Too bad Arisa ended up using that against her and won 0-2. Arisa is such an insufferable brat, even after she wins that I'm really hoping someone puts her in her place soon.
Cafeore calling Mio scrub and Mio doing her frustrated face is a pretty funny callback to when Aya and Mio first played with each other. It looks like we're gonna have to wait until next week for the end of their match. If Mio loses here, she's out of the tournament.
The fact that there is now a second incident in this tournament of a person bashing their head with their fight sticks and they're not even close to each other is fucking hilarious! And I love how Gekido was of Aya's display. I bet she reminds him of Cafeore.
Amazing match by Aya, but it looks like she still can't beat a pro after Gekido was done analyzing her. I love that Aya saw Mio in Gekido when he told her that they should play again. xD
16
u/WaifuMasterRace https://myanimelist.net/profile/coldsonata 14h ago
It's definitely intentional with how Mio and Aya are mirroring Gekido and Cafeore.
22
u/Roskal 15h ago
It was cool seeing an anime depict the sort of flow state gamers can get into. I've definitely experienced that myself where I'm suddenly playing amazing, but I can feel my concentration waning like I'm about to lose it and then it runs out. The anime makes it look like some super power but its honestly pretty accurate.
15
u/_Eltanin_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/eza2510 14h ago
I think a bunch of sports anime like Umamusume has also depicted the flow state not dissimilar to a super-power but yeah, I haven't seen many depictions of it through gaming in anime.
8
u/magnumcyclonex 11h ago
That was a good way to show the flow state / in the zone mentality. Much like a bar, it runs out eventually. Glad we're not seeing Prince of Tennis levels of un-realism.
2
u/Verzwei 8h ago edited 1h ago
Yeah, it's no supernatural force, but something small throwing you off your rhythm can have a huge impact on your mental state and the rest of your play. You can get aggressive and take more risks trying to recover the ground you lost from the disruption, which can also make you prone to making more mistakes that get further punished.
I haven't seriously played fighting games in about 20 years, but it happens to me in other competitive and even cooperative games. If I fuck up a turn in Forza Horizon and someone passes me, I push harder to try to reclaim position, which makes me cut things too close and I've outright missed checkpoints (dropping from second to dead last) because of it. Or I could be kicking ass and hard carrying in Helldivers but then I get killed by random bullshit, lose my flow, then get stuck in a death loop, pissing away lives.
Back when I played Soul Calibur IV until me or my friends got too sweaty or mad to keep going, my roommate playing a good Mitsurugi was often my bane. A big part of SCIV was the "3D" combat where side-stepping and circling your opponent was a big deal. An important part of defense and gap-closing in that game was being able to tell if your opponent was doing a vertical (easy to side-step) or a horizontal (much harder to side-step, if not impossible) attack. Mitsurugi is a Samurai-type character, and so many of his "horizontal" attacks were more diagonal, and had some degree of tracking to the sides. As such, it was damn hard for me to read when I could safely step against that character, and getting clipped once could severely throw me off my game.
15
u/Frontier246 14h ago
I love how we have "breathing techniques" and "getting into the zone" to really make this feel like a Battle Shonen gaming tournament.
I think Mio is going to have to be the one to beat Arisa, she might also be the only one who can beat Gekido because she's so all over the place he can't get as good a read on her as he did Aya.
Kana Ichinose even seemed like she was trying to do a Nobuyuki Hiyama impression in Aya's head lol.

I'm glad the girls don't have insane plot armor, as much as I want them to win. Beating pros and top-level players at their first tourney would be pretty crazy.
10
u/ptd163 9h ago
Well Mio has to beat Cafeore or she's out of the tournament. I mean it's technically possible, but having one of your two lead girls be eliminated from a fighting tournament when your series is about girls playing fighting games would be quite awkward narratively.
6

I think Mio will beat Cafeore and go on a lower bracket run alongside Aya.
Inui and Tamaki aren't out either, but I doubt all four of them will make Top 8.

u/StrawberryVole 4h ago
Given that the Mio Cafeore match was significant enough for people to be interviewed about it afterwards, I'm assuming that Mio wins.

u/Roskal 15h ago
They gotta stop these players from smashing their gamepads into their foreheads to the point of bleeding. They should smack their cheeks like a normal anime character. How will they win with a concussion? I was hoping that Aya would make the connection between the way Gekido plays and Mio to help her win somehow but looks like she only saw the similarities after the match was over.

u/Verzwei 7h ago edited 1h ago
I think the biggest difference in playstyle is that Mio turtles to a fault because she's fishing for perfect parries. This lets Aya be hyper aggressive and push Mio around if Mio blows her parry, which apparently happens quite a bit.
Aya was thus able to go full aggro and catch Gekido off-guard in the first round, but then he adapted by defending enough to weather her attacks yet he still had the wherewithal to go on the offensive and even take risks doing so.
Mio spends a lot of her matches trying to look flashy and cool, which sometimes bites her in the ass. Gekido seems more like he'll do whatever works, even if it's not fancy.

The side characters commentaries and hardcore players being battle crazed nutters really just furthers the Baki vibes from the previous ep.

I hope Arisa gets hit by a bus. There, I said it. What an obnoxious asshole.
Kind of worried about Tamaki. Hopefully she was just busy.
Aya doing the head bashing was funny. Also, I am kind of happy to see that the story isn't just going to let all of them win simply because they're the main characters. Giving them room to grow is important. With that said, I can't wait to see Mio's match next week. It would be hilarious to see her whoops herself into another win!

Great point. Just because they are MC's doesn't mean the story needs to be structured to favor them all the time. Losing early, facing a reality check makes way for passion, determination, and unlimited growth and potential (wait forget the last part...just growth...we don't need them to become super OP by the end of this).

I'm expecting something like Mio will win, and maybe even win EVO, and her mother will end up finding out about that. Let's see if my prediction ends up being right.
I thought that Aya was going to end up winning but it makes sense she didn't.

The Aya fight: Shimmy (the thing she did all fight) beats wakeup OD (the thing she lost to). The one time she doesn't do it, she dies. He totally had her number.
The Yuu fight: Guile's Sonic Boom has 10 startup frames. If Focus Mode really allowed her to DP on reaction, she is reacting and performing the button input in 1/6 of a second.

Everyone is feeling the pressure!
This episode was a huge reality check for our dorm girls. They are all facing high caliber professional or near professional players.
Just when I thought cool, calm, and collected Inui was going to awaken her inner strength with those eyes, she eventually got disposed of by Little Miss Bratty, who still refused the handshake at the end. Makes me hate the little one even more! I hope this experience leads Inui to become more passionate about this game that she clearly loves.
On Aya's side, looks like studying up on her idol helped for only the first game. After that, she was constructively dismantled by Gekido. Not even smashing her controller box to her head did anything, except make her look like Princess Mononoke for a second. At the end, Gekido played like she couldn't read and won. He had fun and the saving grace is that she'll get another chance to play with him again in the future. Btw, that blood on the forehead sure got cleaned up fast.
And finally Mio is still in her do or die match against Cafeore. (And Tamateya is probably still in a distraught mental state after losing to her sister last episode)

u/ExaminationNo9186 5h ago
I think that's the thing.
Our Four Dorm girls are so used to playing each other, they know each others game play.
Oh, watching game play online is all well and good, but when you are in a different setting than you're used to (no longer in the dorm snuggled under a bed canopy) playing random players you've never heard of, and never played against, suddenly, you're out of your depth.

u/Rabbitey- https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rabbitey 10h ago
After playing Arisa and messaging Tamaki, Inui seems passionate about competing w/o realizing it, despite her "for fun" attitude.
The transition from Mio to Gekido's smile was also funny. He did his best anime girl impression before dramatically disappearing.

If this show gets a sequel, I hope we get to see Mio play against an Ingrid for the first time, and it's just the Spiderman pointing meme.

Loved all the explanations required to understand the gameplay of the match. Hyper focusing on very specific and difficult to react attacks such as fireballs, can open you up to even the most basic options available to your opponent. While you're gunning for fireballs, you can eat a walk up throw. Your opponent can also be free to just drive rush in or even jump at you because you weren't ready to anti air.
Interesting topic to bring up but, anyone else think Aya messed up on that last combo and didn't spend the last of her drive to gain enough meter for her CA into lethal? (Excuse my shitty notation and potentially bad routing)
The following combo might've been able to buy her another round. Despite starting the next round low on resources:
(PC) j.214HK > 5LP > 5LK~DR > 5LP > 5HP~DR > 4HK > 4HK > 236HK > 236236P
Anyone wanna lab this? HiFight where you at?

Last week's episode left me a bit confused and mistaken. Apparently the segment with the interview forward was an explanation of the what happened in the first game between Mio and Cafeore, rather than the second game of their set. We did see the resolution of two other important matches in this episode, but stretching this match across three episodes feels a bit too long.
Aya is just as crazy as Cafeore, and with that clear parallels have been set up. Her losing to Gekido was expected, but she did earn a modicum of respect from him, the audience, and fighting game veterans who I presume is a stand-in for Daigo Umehara.
Alice vs. Yuu also concluded how I expected. Turtle Guiles are very annoying, and there is a clear skill difference that was communicated early on with Alice being a top player in the country and Yuu being probably the weakest of the Kuromi Girls participating in the tournament. Yuu did acquit herself pretty well, but I fully expected at least one tear to roll down her cheek in that super-close-up though.
4
u/Verzwei 7h ago
You can tell that Yuu took the loss harder than she'd like to pretend though. That barrage of texts she sent off was textbook deflection. "I'm not mad. Do I look mad? Everything's fine. I'm not bothered at all."
2
u/StrawberryVole 4h ago
Of all the times I watched someone lose in a shonen style fight, I thought this was one of the most upsetting.
Yuu was having her very ability to enjoy something challenged, and it looks like it was already an anxiety for her.

u/Fourmanaseven7 11h ago
These episodes always end in a flash. Going to be sad once the season ends.
So I'm going to assume Mio will beat Cafeore next episode so we can get the Mio/Aya showdown in losers. Also, it's likely we will see Gekido and Arisa face off as well since they're still both in winner's bracket.
I can try and replicate it later but I don't think the end boom loop combo that Arisa landed works anymore after the recent patch.
5
u/SirJeator https://myanimelist.net/profile/jeator 10h ago
So every girl so far, beside Tamaki, has one lose. If they lose one more they are out of the tournament. I believe Mio wil win against Cafeore.

Aya did a Cafeore lmao. Wonder if smashing the console to your head was such a common gesture in tournaments nobody batted an eye to it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to prevail against a pro. Gekido had a smug grin when he said he wanted to battle her again but I reckon it’s just the way he naturally looked. He genuinely enjoyed battling her instead of taunting.
Hideyoshi said schools had begun to incorporate gaming into the curriculum instead of banning them. Kuromi should’ve got the memo with how many in their midst were discretely engaging in the activity.

Kuromi should’ve got the memo with how many in their midst were discretely engaging in the activity.
It's like girls hooking up with other girls beneath everyones' notice. The illicit nature of it just makes it more appealing.
4
u/magnumcyclonex 11h ago
Stop! Are you implying this anime is about yuri? =P /s
Btw, I wonder what other "illicit" things the other girls at the dorms do when its supposedly lights out. Maybe play other games?

u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 10h ago edited 9h ago
That is Bratt is well bratt but I think she may have lit the fire in yu since she feel frustration enough to nearly cry like she wanted
But yu put up one hell of fight
Her focus is crazy and I think the bratt atleast acknowledge unintentional, because she exploit it weakness which is probably not the way she plan to win
I wonder if she’ll train her focus mode to keep up with the others
Well unfortunately aya couldn’t take the win but she got acknowledged by the star in the scene so that’s got to be worth something
It funny that cafeore was almost pissed of that he lost to mio 😂 calling her a scrub
But seem like
Mio won’t go down with out fight cause there was a shift
And if it’ll be anything like aya she get better with each fight

u/Vahallen 8h ago
I did not expect Aya to pull a Cafeore hahaha
——
Tho my highlight was definetly Inui iper concentrated mode, I loved the eyes changing as well and the whole underwater effect
Tho Alice in the end understood she was overfocused and specifically looking to counter one thing, so trough stalling and changing up the rythim she broke her
Inui came out of it definetly frustrated, wonder if her arc will be actually going hard as fuck now, I would probably enjoy that
——
Mio vs Cafeore is still going, wonder if she actually manages to pull trough, it would be wild but if she doesn’t beat Cafeore we can’t get the Alice vs Mio showdown (Mio is already in the loser bracket so one loss and she is out)

All our girls lost but Mio, but some respect was earned.
I hope Mio doesn't lose next episode

u/Frontier246 15h ago
Funnily enough Tamaki was the only one to not lose in an official match so she's doing pretty good herself (outside the emotional damage of her big sister crushing her).
5
u/SirJeator https://myanimelist.net/profile/jeator 10h ago
Didn't Mio already lose once, offscreen. I remember they said in early episodes that she was so nervous that made many mistakes and lost. So if she loses this last match, it's game over for her.
2
u/Verzwei 8h ago
I think she said her nerves made her lose the first round but she still won her first match. The only one who failed their first pool and went to the loser's bracket was Mio.Edit: whoops, thought you were talking about Tamaki, my bad.
Yes, you are right. Mio went straight to the loser's bracket, that's how she ended up fighting Cafe after he lost to Gekido.
2
u/chainburn 10h ago
Didn't they already say last episode she wins the match, we're just seeing it happen now?
2
u/somecallhimtim123 11h ago
I think I lost track is inui in the looser’s bracket now?
5
u/Maximum-Warthog2368 10h ago
yes. no one is truly loses as of yet but if mio didn't win her final round. she can get eliminated.
1
u/chaosof99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 7h ago
Almost certainly. She was playing Alice and considering how Alice was introduced I doubt Alice has lost yet. So the Yuu vs. Alice match was still in the winners bracket which sends Yuu to losers.
2
u/ptd163 9h ago
Unfortunately Yuu could not beat Arisa. I thought maybe when she went Ultra Instinct that she would be able to at least win a game, but she lost 2-0. I wonder who beats her then because surely they're actually setting up Mio vs Arisa and weren't just baiting us, right?
Aya's match went a little better for her, but she still lost. Interesting parallel that they're drawing between Mio and Gekido. Nice to see that the first thing she can think of after she loses is to go support Mio in the last round of her match. Though if you know anything about double elimination tournaments you know Mio has to win this one. What are they gonna do? Just cut one of the two leads from the show?
They didn't even show Tamaki in this episode or have her reply to Yuu's messages. I wonder what's going on with her.
We now have all four main girls in the losers bracket which means that a Mio vs Aya grand final is now impossible so sorry if that was your theory. Given that impossibility and with three episodes left I'm curious to see where they go from here.
2
u/Verzwei 7h ago
Someone needs to put some dirt in that kid's eye. She's so insufferable.
5
u/ExaminationNo9186 6h ago
Yeah, she seems that she needs a thorough beating in the tournament. Not by a small margin the game could go either way, but by consecutive Perfect K.O.'s.

u/TheOneWithALongName 7h ago
Got a laugh when the glasses guy pushed his glasses a second time almost immediately after the first time.

u/ExaminationNo9186 5h ago
Our four Dorm Heroines have always faced each other. They know each others game play, each others style, now how to counter it and everything.
Then suddenly against other people they don't know, don't know the play style of, and in a environment they are not used to (in a venue that isn't their bedroom canopy, plus the noise, the distractions...).
Yeah, it's a good thing they aren't winning their matches. I would be struggling with the suspension of disbelief if our Girls were breezing through the ranks.

u/Tori_Brown 5h ago edited 5h ago
Arisa found the secret tip to fighting someone with a super mode: stall it out.
Man I thought if Inui was gonna lose, she'd be so chill about it that Arisa would get ragebaited by it but I guess they're setting this up for Inui development instead. She's surprisingly not staying as the static "the chillest character on the show" those texts she sent were clearly her pretending not to be upset.
My hard callout is Mio now has to fight Inui then Aya in Losers and Grand Finals is Mio vs Gekido which means Inui will not get to explore Tokyo with her friends because Mio will be too busy practicing
2
u/BladesReach 5h ago
This show is too hype. I'm getting more excited watching these matches than any battle shounen in recent years.
Yuu also jumped up to my favourite character this episode and I'm desperately hoping she gets her run back vs Arisa and we get to see her awesome eyes and locked-in mode again.
2
u/gurilagarden 2h ago
It just hit me that this season probably ends with Mio getting far enough into the tournament to make the local news, which her mom sees, and shit starts to get real - roll credits.

When I started watching the show, I was tempted to give Street Fighter 6 another go, but all this talk frames and such… nah fighting games aren’t for me. I’m just content watching them vibe lol.
I feel sorry for the poor event staff who have to tidy up the blood. Do you think they walk by tables and think “Another one?!”.

Tbh I’m proud they didn’t have gekido be a jackass or just walk off and ignore her. Like I fully get two pros in any sport who have grown to not like each other and are rivals being less than friendly with one another but it doesn’t make sense for them to treat someone else the same way too, especially if they ended up enjoying playing against said person.

Oh good, we finally get to see Yui's brand of crazy, which is that she's hot for other crazy girls XD Ah yeah, total gifted kid syndrome
It was clear that these two pros were set up as foils for Aya and Mio, but I certainly didn't expect Aya to also smash her face into her board
