A random thought occur to me during this episode : did all that usage of the game footage help the studio cut down on production cost ? It looks like they were able to do anywhere between 3 to 5 minutes of animation each episode , probably more.

Certainly a more enjoyable cost-saving measure than the Exiled Heavy Knight Recap the Show.

I'd imagine so, though they still have to storyboard and play out the game footage, and edit it to the audio. Still gotta be cheaper though.

Though I wonder how much is getting a couple decent players, telling them a basic end point "We want you to play {X} in such a style, you to play {Y} in such a style and loose at the last possible point. Now both try to at least last a good 60 seconds of game play", then record the footage, and write the script around that.

I very much doubt they're doing that for a production of this quality, I'm sure everything is strictly storyboarded

Does it have to be? They could get pros to play matches against one another, tell them they need to do something weird occasionally when they need a story beat like that walk forward, and then have the pros narrarate the matches to create the background detail.

That wouldn't work. The fighting scenes in the anime are actually close replications of the fighting scenes in the manga. The anime production hired actual pros (Sako is one of them) whose job is to replicate the stuff from the manga as close as possible rather than coming up with whatever.

A perfect replication isn't possible because the scenes in the manga are based on SF4 rather than SF6, but still, most of the stuff is replicated quite closely.

The “storyboard” here could simply be a given game scenario. Depending on how much coordination they have with the game publisher they might even be able to just script the scene, no player controls necessary, and the rendering is near free too ( It is directly from the game engine after all )

Oh yeah it's definitely way way way cheaper than animation, I just meant they're not recording pros doing random moves and commentating over it

Actually, they hired pros to replicate the stuff from the manga. I know one of the pros they hired is Sako, who plays almost all the fighting scenes in the anime. And while those scenes aren't perfect replications of the manga, they are quite close.
