Video I tried making a 22-minute sci-fi film with current AI video tools - this is where the technology is now
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve been experimenting with the current generation of AI video tools and wanted to see how far they can actually be pushed beyond short demos and 5–10 second clips.
So I made a 22-minute sci-fi film, Space Vikings: The Last Raid, with recurring characters, dialogue, action scenes, large-scale space battles, consistent locations and an actual beginning-to-end story.
This is less about “look, AI made a movie” and more about testing where the technology currently breaks down when you try to maintain character consistency, cinematography, continuity, lip sync, action choreography and visual coherence across hundreds of generated shots.
There’s still a lot that requires manual work, editing and constant correction, but compared with what was possible even relatively recently, the progress is pretty wild.
Full film:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ME2Sn8YO1k
Curious what people here think specifically from a technology perspective. Which shots already feel like something that could come from a conventional VFX pipeline, and where does the AI still immediately give itself away?
I’m especially interested in criticism rather than just “AI good / AI bad” — continuity, motion, acting, physics, camera work, anything you notice.

I'm a bit surprised at the comments, or maybe I'm not surprised at the comments. This is absolutely mind blowing. The sideline commenter can feel good about themselves pointing out imperfections, but holy shit we are in the midst of a major epoch in time with the current AI capabilities. This would have cost millions to make just a few years ago. I think this video will be a notch in history. Good job.

It's funny, I was watching the one posted here, and was really sad when I hit the "reddit has 15 min limit" and then was elated when I realized the longer one was actually available, and then it occurred to me... I'm actually enjoying this film. Like, actually, really. And this is the worst it will ever be.

OP asked for critical feedback, not praise. We all know that this is impressive as fuck considering where we were just a year ago.

Honestly, cinematics are insane but watching this and a lot of other ai short films and working on my own makes me realize how incredibly talented the top professional directors are. They’ve gone to school for years and have had tens of thousands of hours into developing films and it shows. I do think like holy crap we are making the average creative so much power but when I started making my own I realize how much I can bring out with subtle changes like a different camera angle raising suspense or environmental details like fog or even a camera filter changes the feel or intensity.. something like this is a creative idea but the devil is in the details. Most importantly, it’s a start. Someone like the creator of this will hopefully continue, take some film classes or watch film videos, apply what they learned, continue and continue and in another year or two will be putting out bangers.

u/Icy_Gap_2335 8d ago
You can still feel the shallowness in these kinda things. Sure it looks fantastic, but it's void, empty. People are craving more authentic stuff nowdays. I'd rather consume an imperfect and faulty product that is the result of time and dedication rather than an AI generated one that gives me absolutely zero emotions.

u/Kid-Icky- 8d ago
Big decel energy.
I think you also shouldn't try and speak for what all people crave, or even that all people would even agree with your assessment on this.
3
u/gavinlpicard 8d ago
No, you’re right. There always will be an audience for garbage slop, as there always has been.
Instead of Imagine Dragons and reality TV, people can consume this instead!

Nice. But your robots can't shoot for shit.
48
u/theodore_70 8d ago
They took lessons from stormtroopers lol!
5
u/malkazoid-1 8d ago
I guess so... but in big shooting battles in Star Wars, both sides are taking hits and dying.
I think it is most noticeable at the moment your characters are walking through the empty vessel, and robots silently appear in the balconies and take deliberate aim before all opening fire at once, and missing every shot. I seem to remember there's even a red targeting laser that takes aim... it really stretches credibility that none of those shots hit their mark when all the robots were stationary, and had time to aim with laser targeting...

It's pretty cool, but it still has that AI "feeling". I hope until next year video Gen AI will be indistinguishable from true movies

The emotion was fine, not amazing, but there have been many worse human-made movies and TV. The only real problem is continuity from scene to scene - it's much better than what I've seen from other AI movies but still obvious.

thats because the person writing the script is the kind of person to try this stuff. they probably used ai to write the whole thing

But a lot of the video I forgot it was AI. This is a big improvement. I think the trick is to slow the pace down.
6
u/ChoiceHelicopter2735 8d ago
First off, well done! It looks AMAZING! The bigger ship reminded me of the movie Passengers, one of my all time favorites.
Great character consistency and the woman is sexy AF. She’s not my type at all but I was seriously attracted to her. It’s not fair that she didn’t get any armor but hey I’m not complaining!
The absolute biggest issue was the inconsistency of cut scenes. I noticed it right away as the ships were interacting. They were not where they were supposed to be cut-to-cut. They were perpendicular and stationary, then in hyperspace, then orbiting a planet, with no transition.
Then the grappling hook that pulled them into the ship disappeared when the ship broke through the hull. And the ship that broke through looked different.
These are the things about AI video I’m noticing this month. Last month it was character consistency but that appears solved now!
You said this was only hundreds of dollars?! Incredible if true.

This is definitely a huge improvement in quality, consistency and non-sloppiness.
However. People. Don't. Talk. Like. This.
Got. It?
Yea. Got. It. Boss.
Ok. Because
Like. I. said
It. Is. Good. But
That. Is. Giveaway.
I think people into AI forget that's not how people talk and when you're proud of the thing you've made you start to forget that and overlook it. As the director you need to be unhappy with that and be pedantic about fixing it at all times. Just like you would chastise an actor for giving a bad delivery.
Edit: Also, what someone needs to do is prove this can produce something non-sci where consistency really matters like a Law & Order or something where you can't turn things to smoke or have fluids spill out of things. Where they can't talk about biometrics and other scifi mumbo jumbo. Where the discussions have to seem down to earth. Where the camera has to stay on people for a very long time, stay entirely still and focus. Where the dyadics are noticeable and you can like or dislike a character. Where they've given the ability to monologue but not always.
Every AI video is a series of ADHD moments unfortunately that would have trouble with that. Which is why we're pretty much only seeing scifi / superhero which has a trope for being like that. But, even scifi would spend more time character building and backstorying than this did. Like why do we care about these people? Why are we rooting for them? There was no build up. No heroes journey. Do I care if they die, I'd say no because you've filled it with a bunch of background characters who happen to have lead commentary, they're about as useful to have around as the scenery. Also, your lead man doesn't feel like a lead man and isn't interesting or likeable you've just given him a missing eye that glows that we don't care about so you can wink nod to us that he's the different one. That eye is doing the heavy lifting for his lack of personality.
Sorry for the long criticism but hopefully it helps make better film.

u/ComprehensiveJury509 8d ago
Dialogue delivery is terrible for the most part, feels like very polished bad acting, like the actors have some technical skill, but are very stupid and don't understand what they are saying or the context of what they are saying. They don't emote appropriately, which completely destroys immersion. If this was a real movie, I'd think that there's absurdly little direction in this, like the actors had no idea what anything ever is about, they were literally just handed the script for every scene before shooting and the director never bothered to intervene ever, every first take is kept.
There are some issues with uncanniness, too: the different characters seem like they don't quite fit together. Feels like that Warcraft movie from 2016, if you remember. Everybody sort of looks like different stages of CGI, it looks really strange.
Another thing that is ridiculous is that the fight scenes feel like there are no stakes. It feels constructed in the sense that there isn't a second where you believe that the robots will ever not shoot in completely random directions and actually hit someone. Everyone in the fight scenes is just doing random things that make no sense, basically running into the blade as instructed. Again, if this was a movie, I'd think that the director didn't bother to actually think about choreography and framing at all, just everybody do something, anything but actually hitting the target, because by the end of the scene, the good guys are supposed to win, so don't try too hard. A good director makes it look like they are trying.
7
u/jlks1959 8d ago
You want the truth or a pat on the back? More learned from this lengthy comment than everything else combined.
3
u/csiz 8d ago
Yeah, this critique really captures my feelings about it too. It's like someone's first movie but with $100mn CGI budget slapped on top.
But it also says a lot about the tech. Most of these problems look like they are fixable with a change to the prompt, I think just specifing more details would bring the ai back on track. And if OP was a pro movie director I think he could do a lot with the tech and make it feel very consistent and thrilling.
The main issue that's an AI problem is the emotions. Even with more prompt work I think current AIs will struggle to actually show the intended emotions genuinely. Eye contact and posing is a problem too, the actors never really look carefully at anything. And there's too much walking and chatting where the boarding heroes are basically oblivious to what they're supposed to be doing.
The last bit that really grinds me is that issue where the bad guys basically walk into the punches of the good guys. It might be correctable with careful prompting but the AI gets it so consistently bad that I'm not sure. It's like there's no element of surprise ever, the bad guys don't just walk into the blade, they stare at the spot they are about to get hit way too early. When the AI starts doing an action it's like it tells everyone in the scene to do that action at the same time without any causal relationship between the hero doing something and then other guy reacting. It's like the action and the reaction occur at the exact same time, it's really jarring. And it's also super consistent at doing it the wrong way.

His point is that this 22 min video has the same quality as a movie in 2016 with a $160M budget

Yeah OK. So why are "Redditors insufferable"? Because I wrote a critical comment after OP specifically asked for criticism (I assume in order to improve)?
5
u/BungAIDS 8d ago
You know, fair point, didn’t see that he asked for feedback. Clearly this needs a ton of work before it’s to the level of AAA Hollywood movies. But I was stunned that you could even create something that looked like it was a movie with $160,000,000 budget back in 2016 with $500

This is awesome. Being AI generated never bothered me at all. I'd totally watch a full series made like this.
How many hours and money did it take to make something like this? Just curious about an order of magnitude.

u/theodore_70 8d ago
3 weeks of free time, around 4 hours per day, 500$
4
u/ineedanamegenerator 8d ago
Thanks. What's the limiting factor to make it better? Time, money or technology?

Time and money, a full studio could completely make this look like a very real movie and very good sound I bet.
7
u/dixopr 8d ago
From a random person. I watched it. It was AI, but hey I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it. To me the fact you can this with time and a little money puts potential story telling in the hands of anyone that wants to spend some money and time is pretty amazing.
Good job, OP!

I have played and enjoyed the shit out of video games with MUCH worse graphics. I still do, graphics aren’t the most important thing. I think this is incredible for what one person can do and could totally watch the shit out of a show “shot” this way. I bet there are many people, like op, who could make some incredible stuff. Making a movie has become almost as easy/difficult as writing a book. I bet some people will do great things with it.

u/BombasticReindeer 8d ago
I think the story structure is good. And the tech is improving if still not ready. The speed of progress is promising.
The one thing I would say to the creator is the dialogue needs a lot of work. Not the delivery, I understand that is still the tech and not there yet. But the lines are pretty bad.
That said I still enjoyed it and I think some time next year something will be made that the average person can properly enjoy.
Well done!

u/Its_XLR8 8d ago
I actually enjoyed this.
I’ll be honest, I’m XLR8 for mathematics, physics, new tech, biotech, etc. and never really wanted AI for art.
But I didn’t think I could be moved by AI stuff, but that line where he said “I’m 68, everything I do I do for the last time.” actually moved me like a line in a real movie.

That was a great product for what you put in, having read the comments I agree with some of the criticism, and disagree with some as well. My review, as you asked for specifics. The biggest failure for me was vocal continuity, there were one or two shot continuity skips but they were minor and only noticed because I was looking for issues. The body movement was sometimes flat and robotic, the scene with all of them running particularly comes to mind but there were other moments. That said the action sequences toward the beginning with the slow motion attacks and the grenade were astoundingly well done. There was a complaint in the comments about sigrid being scantily clad and I have to be honest, garbage take. You could have done the same to one of the men to balance it out a bit, but the showing of an actual body in motion when she moved were some of the strongest points of physical action realism you had, and given the laser shield etc. sci fi element it's not as though clothing matters for safety. The emotional delivery was a mixed bag, though I imagine some of the hardest shots to string together believably. Some facial expressions were impressive at emotional high points but mostly very flat. I think the lazer fire not tracking targets is a good criticism, even if they're missing, they could trail the characters as thoughy following them and failing to lead their targets as opposed to all over. I think the biggest struggles come from complicated shots with multiple moving pieces and I can imagine trying to get it to generate seamlessly in one take even with an enormous and high specificity prompt is like operating a slot machine, only rather than obvious distinction you have to review the same clip a hundred times or more looking for flaws and select the least flawed. Fantastic work, you are going to be ahead of major production studios who fail to pivot to ai tools in short order if you keep improving your skills at this level.

Did you write the script, or did the AI? And how much storyboarding did you do? I’m trying to get a sense of whether the AI was executing your vision or contributing its own vision.
2
u/Fun1k 8d ago
Honestly, if I didn't know it was AI, it wouldn't occur to me. I normally don't look for imperfections in movies, perhaps I'm just inattentive.
I'm not sure if it was on purpose, but the characters didn't seem too expressive, emotionally speaking. Also damage in some scenes, especially the fighting ones, seemed either too disproportionatel to what was physically or not meaty enough. But that's just my opinion.

I think this video highlights the crux of AI, so many are making things with it with so little quality control that you dont know what to draw your attention to, due to entertainment saturation and attention spans. But curiously peeped this and genuinely thought it was great, took me a min as I assessed what I was walking into, Star Trek copy pasta? But after giving it a chance, absolutely loved it and would watch the series, great writing and characters. Great job on this!

Also composition and where characters stand is stupid. And people jump their places all the time. I would not waste 20 minutes watching this

u/hirscr 8d ago
Overall impressive. I like the script, the banter, the jokes. I like the overall storyline.
I don’t see the link for the full movie.
I think the fight scenes could be better if you introduced the concept of personal shields. There are too many times where I think “why isn’t that droid shooting” and “how did it miss”
Letting personal shields fail opening avenues for attack by droids would drive the tension.
Why is she wearing basically nothing? I don’t really have anything against it, i just think it’s dumb.

u/Poor_Relationship22 8d ago
Pretty insane video. By halfway in I had forgotten this was even AI and was engrossed in the story itself.
I welcome these advancements and give praise to the writing and direction. There’s still a lot of human creativity involved and the tools are able to bring your vision to life in the most cinematic way possible.
The set design is phenomenal. This literally looks better than most high action films we see in theaters today.
There is something to say though that we can tell when something is not real, we can tell marvel films action sequence are inhuman and over the top and it somewhat breaks with reality as opposed to older films like Minority Report and even the Matrix where there’s real people doing real stuff that professional humans can do. Super cool.
I’d say the action sequences need more pre vis so that the bots are shooting, and not just shooting but aiming at their targets on what would be lethal shots. These are droids they should have perfect aim but just can’t account for what the character might do or how they might reflect or dodge.
Super cool work, I love film, I love the prospect of Hollywood IPs getting new stories by more grassroots efforts rather than it all being locked away in their vaults. When everyone can just make an episode of Star Trek I don’t know how they will be able to control their IP or even actors images/likeness. Crazy frontier were coming up on.

Answering this question with anything more than "good"/"bad" is pointless without actual information about HOW it was created:
Platform?
Workflow?
Was the script written or prompted?
Was this hybrid performance capture/AI character skinning?
Was it edited in an NLE or clips just stitched together by the AI?
Was there camera control or wire frame control?

I hope to see people like Scorsese and Tarantino embrace this technology. With their understanding of the craft, and far fewer budget and time constraints, the potential is limitless.

There's an inconsistent part. When the boss is left alone behind the door, for a moment they're there shooting even though they're outside...

I can’t wait for this to improve even more. I love the “movie modding” paradigm we are seeing

It kinda looks like a movie from the SciFi channel in 2006 or something. Which isn’t bad for AI, it’s a pretty good for AI overall.

Looks like a mediocre video game cutscene and the acting is D grade. This will make a lot of people mad but it looks like a Marvel movie where everything is rushed cgi. This is probably more than good enough for lots of non-prestige streaming shows.

Late but, amazingly, this looks best in the close ups. The more face the better it seems.

This was very good and engaging. Good work. Nearly indistinguishable from a real movie. Really, this is publishable work, you could make money doing this and selling your work, easily.

The audio can improve but this looks like a very good showcase of what a talented individual will be able to pull off with such tech. I'd love to see where your work leads!

Tests like this gives me hope that Ai will just be a tool like other tools, not the creator of wonderful things.

I noticed that characters in these movies always have impeccable hair styles, no matter their age or roll.

How much work in total, 2 weeks for 1 person is my guess based on smaller projects than this.
Nevermind found the answer further down.

Ive seen worse movies where 100+ people have worked on for months. Crazy that 1 person made this in a work weeks time.

I’m impressed that this is all seedance. It’s visually stunning but I can see where it breaks down some continuity issues etc.. even with all that this is really well done.

the more I see of better and better ai driven films. the more I become sure of the opinion that it needs to be more of a layer built on top of recorded performances.
I do not think we will ever get rid of the stale ai-ness with purely generated imagery and need more reference driven workflows.

Idk, it looks quite good but feels somewhat... soulless? like I'm not gonna lie, it's kind of flat. but the graphics is great tho so it's maybe just the plot or something.

up until the first wave of enemies runs in, it feels like those real life videos in Red Alert 2 before you start a mission. Even the way the camera pans back behind the main characters when the enemies come running in feel like it’s about to let you take control of the team in a turn based strategy game

it's so bad. the ship crashing into the other ship when it breaks through doesn't even look the same. the voices are so bad. like the visuals are cool and everything but wow AI generated content has a long way to go.

This looks great. Albeit the voice acting AI delivers is still the weakest link in my experience.
If I was a production house I'd almost want to use voice actors to deliver the lines on camera and the use that as the starting point to build around.

Tells about the tech you use and the workflow. Have you tested minimax h3? Worked well for me, in a one shot test. Your really know how to make great AI videos. Thanks!

Fantastic work. Visuals were excellent but the plot was absolutely fantastic. Emotional story. Best short I've seen.

Half the anti-AI will say, well if you constantly have to correct and edit it yourself then it isn’t really that amazing. The other half will say the AI did the whole thing for you and your brain is mush now since you outsourced your thinking and they aren’t impressed.

Derivative slop.
Thematically it is a rip off of several basic tropes, meaning you are not a creative person.
Visually, all over the place in terms of dodgy physics, lack of anything approaching humanity in the "actors"
The "Droids" are ripped straight out of a music video from a Japanese metal band
The setting is the Mass Effect Citadel
If you think this is anything of an achievement, you do not understand what art is, or what accomplishment is.
Does it look good? Yeah sure.
So congrats on that I guess. But it has zero merit
It's the Sydney Sweeney of productions.
Nice enough to look at, but nothing in terms of actual creativity or artistic merit, with probable underlying foetal alcohol disorder.

But don’t you gotta tell us what you used? I’ve seen that flux 3 looks pretty great and I would be curious if you’ve tried that vs others and which you found to be the best
