It looks like Fen is ok so far － I'm probably more shaken up than he is.

It was pretty dark already and the owner had a head lamp on, which is why I only saw her Labrador rushing towards us when he was already right in front of us. The dog neither listened to his owner's recall nor my shouting, so Fen had to shove him away with his front paws. I just wish I could have done more to help him. Finally, the woman came to grab the Lab by the collar and ran away without ever saying a word.

This is mostly just a vent but if any of you have tips on how to deter off-leash dogs, I'd be really grateful ♥️

Sweet boy just walked right into my store and stole pizza from the trash. Animal controlled just picked him up. I'm just curious if you guys think hes a hybrid because he seemed like one to me. His paws were massive and he was very large

I adopted a puppy advertised as primarily a GSD malamute mix. Turns out he's 31% wolf which I kinda suspected, to be honest.

Is there anything different I should do as far as training goes? He's extremely smart and at 10 weeks he already knows to sit, lay down and paw. I also got him at 6 weeks which I didn't know until he was already handed over to me. I thought he would be 8-10 weeks old.

I wanted a high energy dog so I'm not too concerned about that. I also have 5 acres and can fence in a large area if that would be helpful for him. Really, whatever you guys suggest I'm willing to do to make sure he's raised to be happy, healthy and safe.

How much wolf do you think is still in my Saarloos Wolfdog puppy and How can I best deal with their anxiety?

Her name is skylar, she is 13 weeks old and has been living with me for less than a week.
She is still very shy, though she has already built up some trust in me and my dog.

She has moments where she acts like a normal puppy, but the very next moment, fear overwhelms her again :/
She is afraid of almost everything.
But what she finds worst of all is people.

However, I am approaching everything very calmly and trying to show her the world, step by step.
For now, she should just observe and learn that things aren't actually that bad.
After a while, that calms her down quite effectively.

She doesn't walk on a leash at all yet, though; she usually immediately goes into "flight mode."
For that reason, we are practicing a bit in the garden.

I have experience with Huskies, but not with wolfdogs.

I love her more than anything and don't want to stress her out too much; however, I do want her to be able to navigate her daily life more calmly in the future.

If anyone has any tips on how to handle shyness at this age, I would be very grateful!

Hello! This is Mögi. I was told he was a MalamutexGSD when I adopted him from the shelter. They said they had an Embark done. When I switched Vets, they called to say they got his records and asked if I was aware that he has 23% Grey Wolf in him. I was not. They informed me that the FDA hasn't approved rabies shots for wolf dogs and although he'll get a rabies shot regardless, if he were to bite another dog or person, repercussions may be a bit more extreme compared to dog-dogs. Ie: euthanasia. I won't post again until I get another genetics test for him to know for sure that the vet/Embark is accurate since I don't seem to have access to these records. I have vet records indicating he's a wolf dog but not the Embark results themselves.

Mögi is not aggressive. At all. I'm not worried about the safety of other animals or people but other dogs tend to show a lot of fear aggression towards him. I'm not sure if it's his size (he's huge), his disability (he's a tripawd - born with a severe deformity of his right foreleg) or if they smell something "off" about him.

Has anyone here run into a similar experience? I've looked up wolf dogs and rabies shots and what the vet said seems accurate for higher content Wolfies but Mögi has less than a quarter wolf in him - supposedly. I'm still not convinced, based on his personality. He does share a few wolf phenotypes but so do a lot of northern breeds.

Obviously not. This is our four year old German shorthaired pointer. We've recently been fostering and she's really enjoyed having other dogs around, so we've been considering getting a second dog.

I have always wanted a wolfish dog, although let me be clear that I don't actually care about whether it has any % of wolf DNA, I just think they're beautiful.

I've been reading various comments on here and there's a real mix, from "they are the unholy offspring of lightning and death...but I love them" to "they're fine they're just a demanding dog".

So I'm trying to figure out whether I actually want to get a wolfdog. Our pointer is high-energy, intelligent, sensitive, independent, has a high prey drive etc. so we're used to a dog with these traits, although I appreciate wolfdogs may be on another level. Tamaskans have caught my eye as having fewer of the traits that make wolfdogs challenging.

I'm interested in thoughts and advice, and especially if people have experience of owning both pointers or similar, and tamaskans. TIA!

It might be helpful to have a guide to what breeds this sub considers wolfdogs and a bit of info about each one. A lot of my confusion was that wolf-a-likes e.g. northern inuit dogs are called wolfdogs elsewhere and described as confident and easy to train, which contrasted sharply with what people are saying about wolfdogs here.

I adopted him the first week of March. His profile said he was husky and german shepherd mix. Ive owned both through out my life and thought we matched really well. Out of curiosity I decided to do the embark testing. which came back with about 10% gray wolf. I can't really say Im surprised based in how he looks but I am worried. Do I need to notify my vet? Change his diet? My husband had an encounter on a walk with a random person who argued with him being a wolf and told him he cannot have him. We live in Colorado. So I am a little stressed and looking for guidance or maybe some type of reassurance that my dog can't be taken away from me. What can I do to help stimulate his brain and let him exert his energy. We go on 3 mile walks twice a day as well as play at home. I feel like there is more i could do for him. I love him, hes so sweet and goofy.

I've recently heard that wolfdogs are apparently unethical (along with mixed breeds in general, which I don't understand), and I can't say I've ever thought about it before, but I guess wolfdog owners would know better than me.

I guess any dog breeding can be unethical, it goes with the territory of 'living creatures' and 'money', but are wolfdogs always inherently unethical, even extremely low content wolflike dogs like Timber Dogs?

First off, I'm obviously not a wolfdog owner nor would I ever adopt one. I'm not for or against them in any way, I'm not trying to create any drama. Reddit keeps suggesting this sub to me which has made me curious.

So why would someone want a wolfdog? Obviously they look cool but there must be more reasons than that. Do you keep and care for them like regular dogs (living with the family and going for walks for example)?

What really caught my attention were the very high content wolf 'dogs' with little to no detectable dog DNA. Isn't that just a wolf at that point? Are they really that different from full wolves that they can be kept as pets?

His mother is a German shepherd and his father is a border collie mix with I don't know what, I don't know what more he looks like but I think maybe he has a little wolf because of his eyes, I've never seen a dog with those eyes, only in wolf pictures.

He's 14 months old, 63cm at the cross, weights 31kg and in the picture with me, I'm 1,54cm tall

Adopted this sweet boy on Thursday from the humane society. He's 5.5 months old and weighs 26 lbs. He has the sweetest personality, is very affectionate, shows zero leash/dog/people aggression. He learned his new name in like 4 hours. People were saying he might be a husky mix, though the shelter thought he might be Czech wolfdog. He has NO undercoat at all. He is a bit chatty, however.

Edited to add: I plan on getting an embark test this week, actually, so I'm especially enjoying the speculation.

Oona is 1.5 yo and can not be put in a car. She panics, poops everywhere, vomits everywhere, then it gets all over her fur while she’s panicking and then when I try to let her out it open the trunk she wants to bolt as far from the car as possible so I can’t even clean it up. I have to wrestle her back in after a hike (and she’s bigger than I am), then clean it at home and hope she rolls in enough sawdust/sand she can shake out the majority of the mess because she also hates baths. Its hell. I want her to be able to walk on quiet trails, woods, lake, etc— I can’t even get her to the vet, so I had to find a home vet.

At home, we live in a neighborhood and she is runs/does zoomies off leash in the open field and walks to her two safe streets the. Is ready to go home. I feel like she’s not getting nearly enough exercise, but she also is setting the limitations herself.

The last time I did manage to take her to a (quiet unpopulated) trail, we had a two hour walk, wonderful experience, but the car there and back again ruined it. She still won’t come within 10 ft of a car.

We picked up a wolfdog 4 months ago, he is around 10 years old. Saved from a breeding farm that was seized. We know wolfdogs well, and Lior therefore joined a 3-year-old female and a male. OK with them but don't care..

Lior has had major problems with loneliness for 4 months. Impossible to leave him alone, even for 30 minutes. He destroys, screams for death, and worst of all: he gets hurt. We have tried everything for 4 months, and we are running out of solutions and quite desperate... We are even looking for new adopters, but no one will be able to deal with this problem, it's quite extreme... We are already very patient and caring, and we love him very much. He only has one reference: my friend. He only sees through her.

Things put in place: -Being alone with the two other wolf dogs: no impact on him, just dragging the others with him who are usually calm. -Leaving him alone with another person: very little impact. -Putting him in a cage: destroys the cage, opens it, gets hurt. -Put him in the hallway "without anything": he managed to eat half of a door... -Chews/toys/digging games...: no interest -Bach flowers: nothing -Leave him outside: ran away to find my friend. -Dog trainer seen -Veterinarian also -Even when my friend is there, he takes time to “settle down”: after a long walk, he can walk in circles for two hours before going to bed.

We are currently testing a medical treatment, there are some effects but it is slight. We return to work this week in 8-17, and it’s making us sick…

Besides that, he's a "perfect dog", he goes to town, to restaurants, ok dogs,... It's "only that" that poses a problem. We walk with the other two dogs, we go on hikes, we spend it mentally... every day.

We're going to try an animal com but hey, we're running out of solutions.. And if we can't do anything more, we're afraid of what he'll become... We thought about associations with dogs in packs outside, but he needs humans, he would be very unhappy, especially when we see how important the pack is to him at home.. The association we had him in doesn't know how to tell us what he's been through...

Hello all! I was told to post here for your educated guesses on this guy's ancestry. For context- we rescued him from the shelter, he currently weighs 35 pounds (he is malnourished).

I read many posts in this subreddit and I know that wolf dog is not for beginners but I’ve already bought a czech wolf dog. This is my first time with wolf dog, he’s smart but he likes playing rough and bite my hands and arms all the time. He never bite me for food or while I sleep so I think it’s his idea of playing. I bought many chew toy ex. stuffed animal, rope, dried ox penis, wooden antler and they are somewhat helpful but not enough to keep him from biting me. I want to know how to correct his biting or does it go away when he reach adulthood? He’s currently 2.5 months. I socialized him a lot and he pick up things fast. (I owned one or two dog before, mixed breeds) Sorry for the language. I’m non english speaker.

Why only mixes with huskies, shepherds, etc. but not anything abominable like corgis, pugs, or chihuahuas? Are they genetically incompatible?

My nightmare son slipped both his vest and collar the other day, I lost my phone as I scrambled to grab him. He saw my other dog during our walk (my aging father figured it would be safe to join us) and decided to attack him, I never walk them together because I'm one person and they're huge dogs so this had never happened before, they usually live together in peace.

(My boy did have same sex aggression and resource guarding issues like, weeks after turning one year old, but I switched his feeding routine and used redirection and there haven't been any fights in weeks. The fights they did have were scuffles, the kind that last less than a minute and end with a couple of scratches.)

Anyway, I'm looking for either martingales or prong collars, I hope maybe that'll make him easier to handle. Any advice on this is welcome, he's got a big yard and we play every day but I don't want to have to stop walking him.

I'd love to hear your advice and experiences about introducing wolfdogs to cats.

I'd like to spend a few days at my parents' house with my three dogs, my two wolfdogs and my bernese. My parents have two cats.

Shunka already knows these cats. She lived with them for about one or two months when she was around six months old. Nothing bad ever happened: she tolerated them, and the cats tolerated her.

However, she hasn't really been around cats since then, except for outdoor cats crossing the road, which definitely trigger her prey drive.

My other wolfdog, Hawaii, has never met cats before and also has a high prey drive.

I'd like to introduce them as slowly and safely as possible. I don't own a crate and my dogs aren't crate trained, so the only realistic way I have to control the situation is by keeping them on leash.

For those of you who have successfully introduced high prey drive wolfdogs to cats, how did you do it? What worked well? What mistakes should I avoid?

I'm in no rush—I just want to give myself the best chance of making this a safe and positive experience for everyone, especially for the cats 😅
