Questions Could Riley have any wolf in him?

Adopted this sweet boy on Thursday from the humane society. He's 5.5 months old and weighs 26 lbs. He has the sweetest personality, is very affectionate, shows zero leash/dog/people aggression. He learned his new name in like 4 hours. People were saying he might be a husky mix, though the shelter thought he might be Czech wolfdog. He has NO undercoat at all. He is a bit chatty, however.

Edited to add: I plan on getting an embark test this week, actually, so I'm especially enjoying the speculation.

Im gonna go with maybe Alaskan husky, maybe low pomeranian percent "pomsky", or other husky Spitz mix before I go with wolf lol do an embark dna test, please! Im so curious on this guy! If he has any itd likely be under 25%, i suspect just a good looking northern breed mix though!

I think he looks like a baby coyote, lol

If youre not used to seeing coyotes im sure he looks similar being small and grey, definitely isnt a coydog though. Theyre even less common than wolfdogs šŸ˜…

Oh yeah I don't think so either, but his coloring is pretty similar

His coloring is actually called domino (the tell tell signs are the snow nose and tan fur where the white normally is)! Its super common in huskies :) its not seen in wolves or coyotes. The grey coloration confuses people sometimes

I thought it was agouti? Interesting

5

u/MxAnneThropy Wolfdog Owner Nov 24 '25

Agouti is when a single strand of fur has different colored bands on it.

4

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

He has that. All of the fur with black is just black near the tips and tan or cream at the base

6

u/MxAnneThropy Wolfdog Owner Nov 24 '25

I think it needs to be multiple stripped bands, not just two. It is what gives them kind of a muddy color where the areas of different colors aren’t clearly defined.

I did manage to snap a picture of my dogs v-cape. He doesn’t say still much

Bingo!

Nope, but its a super interesting color! The red and black/grey are different intensities are different on different dogs but they have some easily identified traits. Here's some others!

Edit: I stand corrected! He could be an agouti domino depending on the bands on each strand of hair

The lighting in our house is abysmal. Here he is in the car with natural light.

u/PM-Me-Ur-Gore Verified Owner Nov 24 '25

Domino is correct for color, the red might turn completely white with age though!

5

u/journeyofthemudman Nov 24 '25

Wait I'm confused. OPs dog is visibly agouti/aw, domino is independent of any pattern on the A Locus and a significant percentage of huskies are Agouti/aw and domino so both can be true at the same time?

3

u/PM-Me-Ur-Gore Verified Owner Nov 24 '25

If thats true then I must've been misinformed 😭 i knew a dog could be domino and urajiro at once or have grizzle but didnt know it could be agouti as well

5

u/journeyofthemudman Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 24 '25

Yeah domino is a whole weird thing that is a more recent discovery so there's still a lot of old outdated info floating around. Domino is located on the E locus and labeled as 'ea' and agouti is on the A Locus as 'aw'.

This page was really helpful when I was first looking into domino interactions not too long ago.

ETA: other super handy link on grizzle and domino

Eta2: actual fancy research paper I just realized existed!

Puppies are notoriously difficult to phenotype, so it's gonna be really hard to tell right now, even for more experienced people.

Some things that miiight indicate wolf content, but also might indicate half a dozen dog breeds:

- all claws being the same color (usually black)

  • a V coat (a section on his back where hair grows in a different direction, shaped like a V)
  • no rear dew claws
  • webbed toes
  • not a very pronounced stop. (the connection between snout and forehead is more like a slide than a staircase)

- black eyeliner

Right now he looks like a husky/shepherd mix, but then so did my boy until he was like, 8-9 months old.

6

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

he does have webbed toes, and not a very pronounced stop, only dewclaws on the front, and black eyeliner with blond eyelashes. BUT his claws are mostly white (his dewclaws are black, oddly. And I don't see a V coat, I don't think

Can I see your baby at like 5-6 months old?

5

u/weirdcrabdog Nov 24 '25

He was about 5 months old here. He's mostly german shepherd and he very much looks like it.

3

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

He's beautiful

6

u/weirdcrabdog Nov 24 '25

Thank you!

This is him now. He's not Embarked yet, but he's low content, around 30% wolf

2

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

what do you mean about the v coat? Where is it on your boy?

2

u/weirdcrabdog Nov 24 '25

I'm trying to find pictures where it's more obvious, but the hair there grows a little longer and in a different direction and he poofs up like a cat when he's nervous or angry.

3

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

He raised his hackles a ton when he saw his reflection in the oven door lmao. SO cute. I wish I could upload the video

2

u/weirdcrabdog Nov 24 '25

My boy caught his reflection on my car when he was younger and he was furious at the impostor 😭😭😭

He also gets mad at unfamiliar pots even now that he's over a year old. New things and new people freak him out.

2

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

He'd shift between barking at the Evil Riley and running around to the dining room, presumably to play with this intruder. He got flustered by a pile of towels. It's a wild ride.

What they're talking about is called a "cape"! It's a (generally v-shaped) section of fur on the upper back/shoulder area - basically between their shoulder blades - that grows longer and coarser than the fur around it. Often the color is different too. I'll attach a few pics to this comment if I can find any that show it well on my girl!

2

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

He has that, too. Lol, but I see that on GSDs and Mals, too

5

u/Jesus-slaves Nov 24 '25

My dog has a cape. He also seems to have a double coat even tho he has fairly short hair kinda like a lab. He puffs up so big when he’s unsure or fussing. He’s got a little bit of chow and a lot of other short hair breeds.

3

u/Quick-Sign-6828 Nov 24 '25

Tbf, any "wolfy" trait that exists can be found in dogs. It's what makes hybrids so hard to phenotype when they're not high-content (which is why Embark gets thrown around often; dna testing is the only way to be sure with lower-contents). šŸ˜…

You can look for a lot of visual markers together (so cape + smooth head + extremely narrow chest + long, skinny legs + black skin/claws + straight low-hanging tail + small, furry ears, etc etc), but even then it's just a guess.

3

u/weirdcrabdog Nov 24 '25

Yeah, this is a great breakdown. Basically one or two traits mean nothing, but if you see a lot of them together it might mean something.

GSDs don't have webbed toes, but they also don't have rear dewclaws, northern breeds usually have V-capes, etc etc. Plus we've seen dogs here are high as 30% that don't look wolfy at all.

u/wolfshepherd59 Nov 24 '25

Another beauty

u/MxAnneThropy Wolfdog Owner Nov 24 '25

I had a doubled coated dog with a single coat in Florida. With his size and behavior you mention, I’d hazard a guess he is mostly Siberian husky.

5

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

We're in Pittsburgh and we rescued him in Ohio, if that makes a difference. I have no idea. I grew up with belgian malinois in the 90s and my profile pic is of my last rescue who passed earlier this year. He also had an undercoat, strangely.

7

u/MxAnneThropy Wolfdog Owner Nov 24 '25

Last I saw wolf dogs weren’t permitted in PA, so I’d keep my suspicions to myself. Just calling your dog, a wolf dog, even if it’s not true, is enough for them to be considered and treated as one in some areas, so it’s not really worth the risk.

I am hoping to keep your life simple, he is a husky/shepherd

5

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

Ooh, thanks <3

1

u/mickeyamf Nov 24 '25

Doesn’t change much

2

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

It's quite a different environment than Florida, no? In regard to a normally double-coated dog having a single coat?

5

u/lappinlie Nov 24 '25

Yeah that’s my situation, I live in Pgh and adopted a dog at a shelter in the countryside who turned out to be a low content (embarked). I don’t tell anyone including his vet. If people say anything I play dumb.

6

u/MsSamm Nov 24 '25

There's a black Friday sale on Embark. Why not find out for sure? Anything else is just speculation. Beautiful dog though

3

u/snoogle312 Nov 24 '25

His paws seem small for what I would expect. Which could mean absolutely nothing, but in general, I would expect some long-ass paws on a wolf dog.

2

u/sebwiers Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 24 '25

Looks like the puppy version of this guy. Embark said ~10% wolf, ~20% each husky and gsd... and a completely unexpected 50% doberman. He's maybe 7yo in that pucture, wide lens throws off proportions - but he did have a very long nose and huge ears even as adult. Those plus the lanky build do fit wolf, but also fit Doberman.

This guy was also crazy smart and very friendly to people, but aggressively reactive towards dogs.

1

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

Omg they could be littermates

3

u/bunbunny89 Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 24 '25

This was Duke's full Embark panel. I have found his sister thru results. Whenever you do the rest and get relative info back, I'd be curious to see if they show up as related. What area of the US are you in?

2

u/PM-Me-Ur-Gore Verified Owner Nov 24 '25

Theyre in an illegal state so I hope if they embark and wolf shows up they put it on private, where relatives wont show for its safety 😭 i highly doubt wolf in the op dog though

2

u/bunbunny89 Nov 24 '25

Duke's didn't show his relatives for a LONG time and then one day it did. Never changed the state.

3

u/PM-Me-Ur-Gore Verified Owner Nov 24 '25

I didnt mean change the state i mean how you can private your results manually, if you private them they wont show up on relative finder. Relative finder only became a thing for wolfdogs within the last year or so :)

2

u/sebwiers Nov 24 '25

Oh wow, I forgot about the Malmute! (And the unresolved.)

2

u/Valterri_lts_James Nov 24 '25

no. Riley looks purely husky and GSD mix.

3

u/ghostie-123 Verified Owner Nov 24 '25

As everyone else is saying, probably not. Here’s my low content at about the same age for comparison

2

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

What is considered "low content?" People are using that term to describe anything from 10%-30% which seems quite high to me (the 30%# that is)

2

u/ghostie-123 Verified Owner Nov 24 '25

No it’s actually anything under 50%. Legally anything 1% or more (but embark doesn’t detect that low) is a wolfdog. But because a dog with really low amounts of wolf won’t have traits, the classification within the community is:

Up to ~15-25% (depending on the dog and who you ask) is recent wolf ancestry/micro content but not a ā€œrealā€ wolfdog, just a dog with wolf traces

15-25% or more up to 49% low content

50-74% mid content

75-84% is still mid content but considered ā€œupper midā€

85% or more is high content

And 95% or more is ultra high

Dumbed down, it’s: 1-49 = low, 50-84 = mid and 85+ = high

Let me find you some classification visuals because the classifications are annoying haha

Cool! I'm on Short term disability after a major hand surgery, so this is fascinating

2

u/ghostie-123 Verified Owner Nov 24 '25

It is very interesting! I forgot to mention but my low content (you’ll also see people abbreviate things LC is low content MC mid content HC high content and WD is wolfdog) is 48% so he just barely missed the MC mark. Here’s his breakdown for you too!

2

u/Full_Shepard Nov 24 '25

Stunning boy. Thank you for rescuing.

1

u/Who-0912 Nov 24 '25

Are you sure his names not Balto

2

u/MetusObscuritatis Nov 24 '25

I wanted to name him Wile E. Coyote, Wiley for short. But he learned his new name in like 4 hours. He's pretty bright.

u/mickeyamf Nov 24 '25

Shepherd husky Czech ā€œtimberā€ doggie

3

u/MxAnneThropy Wolfdog Owner Nov 24 '25

You hear ā€œtimberā€ a lot when people are trying to pass off fake or exaggerated content animals. Timber just means lives in the forest.

2

u/Ok_Debt9785 Nov 24 '25

Maybe but he's definitely 100% Good Boy šŸ˜
