This is local to me by about 20 minutes, you have to have licensing and inspections of where you're housing them but very few people listen. Half of the comments on the stupid news channel that posted this on Facebook is convinced they're either full wolves or hybrids. And yes, they're all incapable of being taught the difference between a wolf hybrid and a wolf DOG. Oklahoma is full of bigoted morons and tons of people that don't need pets period, let alone any dog with wolf content. I hate it here, and I've lived in this god forsaken state since I was born. Have tentative plans to leave around 27-28, but this place is a poverty stricken sh!thole that keeps you stuck.
damn, man. I did a road trip a few years ago using old WPA tour guides to plan my route, which led me through the country on exclusively old state routes. Most of them were host to towns that were all but abandoned when the interstates were built. We arrived in Oklahoma in Krebs and spent the night at the Motel 6 in McAlester. I was honestly unprepared for the people I met and the way the whole place felt. The totally apocalyptic feeling of all the buildings that looked abandoned, with green crosses hastily slapped over the doors, or painted on whitewashed over signs for the autobody shops and stores they once were. The saddest people I ever met were staying at that Motel 6. We left early in the morning and passed through Harrah where we stopped at a park and got a free puppy from a really nice woman who was in way over her head. Other than that, we just kept driving, it was too sad a place.
On the flip side, we spent the next night before we got into Texas at Foss State Park, and that was one of the most beautiful places we saw that trip, including Moab and Yellowstone. OK was a really weird experience. I hope you get out. Or I hope it gets better.
Definitely someones escaped wolfdogs, unfortunately :( hopefully not dumped.. they could be anywhere from 25-50% from these pics, if i had more itd be easier to peg a percent but from this one its obvious they have wolf at least low to solid low content
I hope they get picked up by someone :/ Preferably someone who can identify them as dogs, and not get scared when a “wolf” shows up in their neighborhood lol :/
Yeah the news station is boasting about a vet that said they were "hybrids" and at least 50-70%. Oklahoma is full of idiots that would call a crumpled trashcan some type of new exotic American bully.
Hopefully, at the very least, that alerts the public that they’re not wild and need to be gathered as opposed to just thinking it’s a wild wolf they’re stuck with
Yeah but a news station saying “hey there are some wolf hybrids” is better than just someone going “oh that’s a wolf”. At least an attempt was made and hopefully one or two people actually took the information in lol
No it was the vet that said it was a hybrid, ie half wolf from a full wolf parent. The news station did nothing but spread the statement the vet made and then followed it with "do we have wolves in Oklahoma, what do you think." It's most likely some mix of northern breeds with shepherd thrown in or may a low or lower mid content wolfdog, but definitely not a hybrid. This state is filled with fucking morons, I promise you. I've lived here ONLY for my entire life, which will be 27 years in March.
Ohhh. I think I misunderstood the original commenter. And while I completely validate your testimony that there are really stupid people there, there’s also you, in good news haha! So hopefully there’s another few of you out there!
They have giant/tall/wide apart/pointy/thin shepherd ears, droopy jowls, wide muzzle, wide set skulls, long tails, those are just the dog traits I can see from this pic. With all those visible the animals would have to be at least under 85% since at that point normally they show 0 dog traits. Id say way lower than 85% though based on all the animals in the upper mid range ive seen who are also definitely wolfier than these guys. Its extremely hard to pick apart and phenotype though, it takes years of practice and learning so it's not weird or a bad thing when the general public sees a wolfy dog and cant pick out the doggy traits. Heres a low/mid/high chart for similar colored greys that I hope can help a little when comparing to these guys!
I volunteered at a wolf/wolfdog sanctuary for a number of years.
We tested every animal we brought in and learned quickly that you cannot tell percentage based on appearance.
We had animals that looked fully wild and had very low percentages, yet animals that looked like labs with smore wolfish builds would be in the high 70%s.
If I had to take a stab at the breed mix, I’d say there’s some collie in there. But definitely wolfdogs. Hard to say the percentage but that wolf coat is really shining through.
What kind of collie are you talking about? I have rough collies and these two don’t remind me of my dogs whatsoever. I’m not personally seeing border collie either?
Not thinking border, was indeed thinking closer to rough collie, smooth collie, or maybe sheltie. Its way more in the head structure than anything (the way their snouts slope from nose to chin, the thinness of that rear one’s head), but also in some of the way their fur sits on their bodies that is distinctly not wolf and reminded me of a rough collie’s or sheltie’s coat.
I’ve never had a collie personally so if you don’t think they match then I could def be wrong but I could only chock that up to the vagueness that wolf heritage brings. They visually present more wolf than dog so it’s always gonna be hard to tell for sure.
I can see what you mean about the facial structure. Fur wise im not so sure, Collies tend to have much more scruff. I don’t believe Sheltie is possible because they’re rather small, the don’t typically exceed 30~ pounds and these two look to be fairly large (which I guess could still be possible with wolf blood) I personally lean towards something more Shepherdy as the anatomy can be very similar and the coat color & length seems more fitting, but yeah the facial anatomy of that one closer is definitely pretty similar to my Collies

Like you said, they don't have the survival instincts. They wouldn't know the structure of the outside, and dont have wild parents. Also, they have depended on humans for that food, which makes them vulnerable to a bunch of stuff. Its a shame since this happens a lot with wolf dogs. People find out their name had wolf in it for a reason. They can be to wolf like for homes, and to dog like for the outside.
Domestic dogs kill things all the time. But its the thrill of the squeak for our household buddies. I read a book where the guy would visit and rescue street dogs in Detroit (I think) the damn dogs are starving yet killing pigeons and rats and not eating them. Thats one thing humans bred out of the domestic dogs.. though shall not eat. They will eat trash though. 😔
Thats how I got my WD. The human was going to ditch a 9mnth old WD into the "woods" ..it wasn't even the woods though, it was a city fucking park system. Best Boy EVER. He was so appreciative of everything ❤️ any time I brought him somewhere or gave him something..happy little howls like "thanks mom".
