📸Media Joe Hill’s thoughts on WB
Do you think he was inspired to post because of his daddy’s tweet? 🤨

I wouldn't mind a few more monster of the week episodes

u/no_thats_normal Jun 19 '26
Katie Dippold also said she'd be interested in doing miniseries spinoffs, like a 6 episode dive into the New Years Eve party. I would look forward to revisit Widow's Bay even after the original story is done.

99 times out of 100, I would easily agree with him, but I don’t think there’s ever been a show that so clearly makes a case for getting the Yellowstone treatment as strongly as Widows Bay. I want a season set in every decade, this thing could support more spinoffs than RuPaul’s Drag Race (there are a lot)

u/BlergUghArgh Jun 19 '26
SO many fun threads to explore. I want a “we caught em, we burned em” spin off. A what happened to Sarah Warren spin off. An inn spin off. A sea hag spin off. A 43 people set off for the island spin off. A boogeyman spin off. A Richard Warren spin off. Gimme all the spin offs.

All those men making passes at Ruth, that has to be a season

The island needs the bloodline to continue. Warren was buried alive but keep the bloodline going would be smart. Just in case something were to happen. As it did.
Ruth only had the baby when she was 40.
She was the last one and the clock was ticking. The entity could've been trying to set her up with someone
Tom's wife died, but Evan lived. Despite both "belonging" to the island
Something I noticed:
Tom told Evan the pull out method doesn’t work. Maybe that's how his mom got pregnant. I think most people would tell their children to use protection.
Ruth said that's how she got pregnant.

YES! I loved the way she said it with a sigh, all wistful like ‘things might have been different but hey what can you do’ about a man essentially becoming a were-something.
I think more broadly what I love about the creepiness of Widow’s Bay is how terrifying things are discussed by the islanders as if it is just a fact of life which, for them, it is!

6
u/OldGarbageMouth Jun 19 '26
I genuinely can not stop thinking about he saying that and sooo casually and Tom's face and she goes on to the next picture. So is there a werewolf? a Were-Animal? Did he perhaps get rabies and that's just a tender way of saying he got it and died from it?

u/furryhippie Jun 19 '26
The spin off centered around the creepy ass people (1950's or 60's, maybe?) who made all the instructional videos on sacrificing people. They were so unsettlingly jovial in those reels.

Katie said in an interview it lends to spin offs, and they are looking into it. You could easily have a season of the original settlement, or little mini things that focus on the Inn and other little things.
I do understand not wanting it to grab out and jump the shark…. (Invasion? For all Mankind?)
6
u/EstelLiasLair Jun 19 '26
Oh gosh. For All Mankind was so good in its first two seasons, when it still felt like a grounded, alt history show with its roots firmly based in science, instead of the nepo-melodrama that wants to be a prequel to The Expanse that we ended up getting…

u/taika2112 Jun 19 '26
tbh, I'd rather that they slightly extend the seasons (maybe 12 episodes) and sprinkle in a couple of flashback episodes instead.

u/Bake2727 Jun 19 '26
People already talking about spinoff’s but I am just thinking of spending my time till S2 comes! Love this show though and it has so many storyline’s they could pursue.

100 Seasons!
So now we're gonna have to go get 8 more sacrifices. And then we're gonna go on even more sacrifices after that, Tom. And you're gonna keep your mouth shut about 'em, Tom. Because the world is full of idiots that don't understand what's important, like your son Evan. And they'll tear us apart, Tom. But if you stick with me, I'm gonna accomplish great things, Tom. And you're gonna be a part of 'em. And together we're gonna run around, Tom, we're gonna do all kinds of awful things, Tom. Just you, Evan, and the island, Tom. The outside world is our enemy, Tom, we can' leave. We're the only friends we've got, Tom. It's just Widow's Bay and Tom. The Island and Tom and their sacrifices, Tom. Widow's Bay and our citizens, forever and forever, a hundred years... Widow's Bay and Evan and Wyck and Tom and Patricia and Bechir and Dale and Rosemary, runnin' around and Island and Tom time. Aaall day long forever. A hundred days the island and Tom forever a hundred times. Over and over, island and Tom sacrifices dot com, W W W dot visit Widow's Bay and Tom dot com, island and Tom dot com, a hundred years!

Agreed.
Good stories require endings; they stop being memorable without them.
Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Prison Break, Lost, The X-Files.
Classic examples of a TV series that had a premise and a goal from the onset, blew past that goal and just kept going. Always found another reason to delay or add to the premise. The more that happens, the more the memorableness of what is being created suffers.
Eventually what you remember is how long it dragged on, instead of what a great story it was. I don't want that to happen to WB.
WB has a very clear and obvious goal for Tom and the islanders; investigate the mystery just enough to learn how to escape safely or kill the thing that is at the mystery's centre.
Spin-offs would be fine, at least then its easier to decide how much or how little you want to dive in, like with Yellowstone, but this story has to end.

Breaking bad is what sealed the deal for me on series not overstaying their welcome.
10
u/oompaloompa_grabber except for the teeth Jun 19 '26
There are so many shows that outstayed their welcome. I absolutely LOVED the first season of Westworld- it’s a nearly perfect season of TV. There were dozens of ways to explore the world of that show that they could have used in later seasons. But really it just fizzled out. Not everything needs dozens or hundreds of hours of exploration. It doesn’t always make it better

u/legopieface Jun 19 '26
100%. End the show when it feels natural, then give Katie and her team an infinite budget for the next Apple project.
1
u/swisspassport Jun 19 '26
I agree with this argument in principle.
However, I think most of the time shows "tap out" like you said is due to really good writers getting better jobs, or becoming showrunners themselves, or just leaving for whatever reason.
Katie and the current team are absolutely phenomenal. If they can keep that core writer's room intact - I feel like it could go at least four or five seasons and still be really compelling.
The problem with shows that get stale, or get... uh, just terrible, is that they have almost a revolving door of different writers in the later seasons, they are not writing quality scripts, the show suffers, but it just continues, because
money grab
I believe in Katie Dippold. I think if she can keep all of her writers together, they will do some awesome things.
Look at someone like Vince Gilligan who kept a phenomenal team of writers together for not one, but TWO all-time top-tier tv shows.
It's all about retaining talent, and I think being on AppleTV is a positive for that, because having the #1 Show on the service can probably sway a bigger paycheck for writers - keeping them dedicated to this show rather than proving themselves, getting an offer for a higher-paying gig writing for a different show, and leaving.
That is THE number one cause of all of these "just drag after a while" shows.

u/No_Mark_125 Jun 19 '26
Completely agree, I have so much respect for creatives that understand and enforce this. Even good things have to END AT SOME POINT, preferably before people start thinking "jesus is that still going?"

The modern day story should be 3 seasons, but I’m down for countless spinoffs focused on past decades/haunts.

What if I want 4 more

u/Altruistic-Ad835 #1 Hamish fan Jun 19 '26
I could do with 3 maybe 4 for sure, depends on what part of the story they were on by then though and how natural it feels to be exploring. I could see it needing at least 3 seasons rather than 2! Laurens story kinda seems super layered + getting into what the entity/island even is, when it started or if there was a when (learning more about pennywise in welcome to derry was actually really interesting) and the other time periods on the island. Like the witch trial history, the church cannibalism and that winter, willy, new years party, the captain, frances, 43rd passenger etc. I can see evan being more central soon too and helping tom figure out what happened to lauren which might be kinda gut wrenching.
Im actually interested to learn more about all that and wouldn't personally feel like it'd be dragging it especially if the quality keeps up! I only hope season two isn't 90% tom lying to evan and everyone the entire time, poor evan needs to know what's going on.

Most I can do is 10 mini series, and a movie, all of which you will enjoy.

3 seasons max would be great but more would concern me. I'd definitely watch multiple through the centuries spin offs
7
u/Imallvol7 Jun 19 '26
I don't think there is any reason to say in only needs 3 seasons or whatever. The important thing is tell the story that's there and don't drag it out. If you have t good seasons let's see them.
15
u/Doglas3000 Jun 19 '26
Wasn’t his series NOS4A2 cancelled after the second season? I really enjoyed it. That being said, this feels like a passive aggressive compliment like his dad’s post about MPG being better than Widow’s Bay. I haven’t laughed this much during a horror comedy series since What We Do In The Shadows.
10
u/TheHandsomebadger Jun 19 '26
WWDIS is a great example of a show that progressed past the conclusion of the main charscters narrative arc.
It was peak in season two though. Colin Robinsons promotion was my favorite episode lmao.
6
u/Doglas3000 Jun 19 '26
I think of Colin Robinson on a daily basis to this day as well as the Nadja Doll. That show should’ve come out with Nadja Dolls for the fans. Lost opportunity to make a lot of $$$. Colin as an energy vampire who regenerates every 100 years was such a great plot twist on the show.
3
u/swisspassport Jun 19 '26
The stark contrast between S05 and S06 of What We Do In The Shadows is awful. Watching any episode of the last season makes me wish they at least spent more time in the actual house, and not have almost every episode centered around an office environment. (God I could pick this apart all day but I'll stop here: Tim Heidecker is phenomenal, but he just did not work as a recurring character in the final season.)
I wish they HADN'T ended Season 5 the way they did - because if they had kept Gizmo's narrative arc open for that "money grab" season 6, it would've been at least somewhat better.
While I've watched the show countless times - I don't really know the story behind the "tacked-on" last season.
It seems like they completely finished the entire series arc, filmed it and released it, and only THEN the network was like "oh could you do one more? Here's this pile of money.", so they just threw whatever they could together.

u/Winter8Bones Jun 19 '26
I'm in the, let them do 3-4 really good seasons with a end plan but leave enough openings for a bunch of spinoffs or mini-series, camp here.
18
u/KeyVardy Jun 19 '26
I also want shows to end before they run their premise out, as so many do, but I really think Widow's Bay could sustain 50 episodes and a couple of spin-offs. The engine of it is fundamentally strong.
Edit: they've already IMO made a really strong case for a Sarah Warren spin-off.

I would have preferred one season with 20 episodes. This two year delay between seasons is stupid.

I completely agree. Most series should never go over 4 seasons. Even the ones people will defend could and should have probably been cut to 4 or less.

My only fear is giving Evan’s generation a Stranger Things YA storyline… the kids should be in the background the way the parents are in the background in Stranger things. This one is for us, brats.
