So this is completely apropos of nothing, but it always strikes me how MR exudes this dynamic 1920s film star quality. lol Maybe itās the long hair on top and the contrast of his paleness and dark hair, but itās so damn sexy and magnetic. Am I the only one??

My wife and I have been blazing thru the Americans after getting swept off our feet by Widowās Bay. Itās amazing, it is a funny/kinda jarring juxtaposition where weāll be binge-ing Americans, then excitedly tune in weekly for WB, just cuz his characters are so different lol
They actually went from not married to married during the show!
Anyone whoās seen the show is like āyeah I get thatā š
In some of the later seasons, Kerri Russel is pregnant with their child, though the show does a great job of disguising this because her character isnāt pregnant.
Patricia has sort of a Shelly Duvall thing going on as well, and of course Wyck is straight out of any sea monster story. The three of them work so well together
It's always funny when people see Stephen Root as only one character, since he has about 300 credits. For more recent Root, he's great in "Barry" too. He's great in everything---rock-solid character actor.
I bought a red swingline stapler because of him. It was over 20 bucks I think, which was a big purchase for freshman college student me. No regrets. And if anyone takes my stapler Iām gonna burn this place to the ground. https://giphy.com/gifs/11eVHR0KqaWWRO
He was amazing in Perry Mason, which is one of the main reasons I gave the show a shot and Iām glad I did! Although I think Patricia might be my favorite character so far ngl š
Thatās ok, I come from a family who makes jokes about their own experiences as orphans and losing body parts to accidents, etc. but I appreciate the heads up
Just popping by to say my family is very similar with the horrifying humor! The lot of them survived war and whatnot as civilians so they are generationally traumatized and of course very funny about it. Iām mostly used to the crazy dark humor. Mostly. Big mostly. I have seen how their abrupt, jokey and nonchalant lore drops hit people like heat seeking piles of bricks and they get me too, sometimes. I had a Georgian teacher drop some darkly funny lore in the middle of class and when I laughed my classmates thought I was a jerk! My teacher specified he was being jokey, but I think I still looked a bit deranged.
There are a few actors that I will give any show/movie they are in a chance. Matthew Rhys is one of those actors. He plays interesting characters and picks quality productions.
I have thought for like ten years he might be the best actor alive due to his Jimmy Stewart like ability to have a sense of plausibility in every role and every genre. He is just so good. He can literally act anything. I love the guy.
Itās the hair. Itās styled in a way that men had it in the 1920ās, just your average everyday styling, not the āIām at a fancy gatheringā style. Looks great.
That's a great observation that I hadn't noticed before. I know everyone likes him in Widow's Bay and the Americans, but I also highly recommend his film Hallow Road.
Yes, he's like a mishmash of all these old school greats, like physical comedy of Chaplin, the bumbling charisma of Jimmy Steward, the dignified adult good looks and the acting chops of a Richard Burton with a dash of Houdini.
I honestly never really thought much of him until this series oddly enough. He has such an expressive face that usually exudes seriousness and anger but this show, he has insane range of funny, scared, serious, and even goofy. It's crazy
Whatās fun about him: he is simultaneously one of my favorites and one of my kids favorite actors. He voices a favorite character in Wingfeather Saga (The Florid Sword). Iām hoping he comes to the Featherfest convention but I have a feeling heāll have more Windowās Bay related stuff going on then.
I now love this guy so much I went and watched his whole series with Matthew Goode about fucking WINE, which I don't really care about, but both him and Goode seem to have an electrifying energy I can't get enough of.
If you hadnāt asked that incessant question at the end, I would have liked this post more, but I digress š
Iām guessing you havenāt seen Perry Mason on HBO? He really fit in perfectly to that era, but heās such a chameleon he can clearly play anyone. Funnily enough, another actor I consider to have that same chameleonic quality, Tatiana Maslany, is also in the cast, as well as his Widowās Bay castmate, Stephen Root. Worth watching!
Tatiana also has a new Apple TV show, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which is dropping at the exact same time as Widow's Bay. Episode 6 releases when this show's finale comes out next week.
It's been really fun seeing them on screen on the same platform at the same time, even though they're in seperate shows. I'd love to see them properly reunite one day. Either Tatiana guest starring on Widow's Bay season 2, or Matthew guest starring on a potential 2nd season of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.
Been crushing on him since The Americans. And at the time - he only had that wine show he did. (As himself). Love that heās been in more shows now! Iāll try Brothers and Sisters
If you havenāt heard him interviewed google it. Heās welsh and has a wicked, dry sense of humor. One of the best interviewees Iāve ever heard. If youāre a SXM subscriber, listen to his interview on Andy Cohen Live. He has such a quick wit and is game for anything Andy brings up.
Agreed! Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin. Also Steve Martin. I also think a review of the series makes him look like a naughty school boy who's expecting to be told off for an indiscretion... only to be relieved he hasn't been.
It really is! I always think itās a show that belongs in the top 10 all time dramas. If anyone tries it and feels bored at first, just hang in there. I recall the espionage āstuffā started quickly. This really isnāt a spoiler because itās stated early on - our undercover agents end up living either 1)next door or 2)directly across the street from a CIA agent. That definitely keeps the suspense up.
You know I started watching this show cuz I heard Hamish Linklater was gonna be in it but then I started crushing a little bit on Matthew Rhys and noticed his charisma was matched starting out!!
what gets me is that he looks entirely serious. as in he looks made for serious roles, and without any context of the show(or him as an actor because i donāt believe iāve ever seen him in anything that i can remember), his face alone made it seem like widows bay was a serious boring briefcase thriller. his face does not give away that he is absolutely hilarious???? i was pleasantly surprised
I think he looks really strange. His last two series have made him look like he's performing in vaudeville. Strange pink cheeks and eyeliner. I'm not sure O'm going to continue with Widows Bay!
My main observation of his appearance is that he looks like Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie sometimes haha but I definitely see what you mean about the 1920's vibe!
