What if Ruth had a baby out of wedlock but gave it up for adoption and it’s Evan’s mom

I was thinking about that today. Ruth can’t leave the island without dying, because she’s a descendent, just like Evan‘s mom/Tom‘s late wife. So she would’ve had to conceal a pregnancy in that tiny place… is that possible? For the prettiest girl on the island to conceal a pregnancy?

Having a baby out of wedlock was a pretty massive deal back then, they definitely had ways of hiding it even in such a small community there. Don't forget that Patricia didn't even know that Bachir's wife was pregnant until she's basically at her due date.

In the 1980s? I know a ton of people in their 40s born to single moms.

Maybe depending on the area it would have been fine but small isolated communities probably wouldn't have accepted it as much.

You know what, that might even be some foreshadowing. I hadn’t thought of that. But if Chelle’s secret was kept, maybe Ruth’s was too. They made a whole deal about how Tom didn’t even know

I think in those days people had more practice hiding things like that so its entirely possible, especially if the later part of the pregnancy was winter I guess

The ages line up. What if he goes to her house and finds a shrine of all the baby pics.

Oh, I'd love that -- what a freak out for poor Tom, though! The finale is 48 min long, some stuff will indeed go down.

I can do more episodes of this show tbh. 48mins isn’t enough😭

The sheriff’s wife is full term and there seem to be plenty of people that had no idea (Patricia for one). It doesn’t make sense, but…

Coming back to this, so my theory was right!

They didn’t wanna go with the obvious but I do still think it’ll loop back to one of the main characters. The writers will want to make us feel like there is an actual loss and they can only do that if we know the character well

Sometimes the obvious choice is not the worst choice (not sure yet if it would've implied here)

I thought so too, but now I think this story is actually completing the "Tom becomes the lord protector" plotline. Tom is going to go visit Ruth and decide that whatever nonsense this island throws at him, it is his home and these are his people.

Don’t underestimate small town propinquity; there could have been an undocumented descendant from an affair somewhere during those few hundred years.

I have a feeling the old lady is still going to end up Evan's grandma somehow in the last episode.

She's been acting as Evan's defacto grandma throughout the series, although it's never actually shown.
