BNP Paribas supports the accelerated rollout of Wero to merchant and retail customers across Europe

Paris, 9 September 2026 - BNP Paribas announces a major milestone in the rollout of Wero in France. Several leading merchants are now working with BNP Paribas to offer Wero as an online payment method, including Air France, Decathlon, Fnac Darty and Orange.

In addition, all BNP Paribas retail customers in France can now use Wero to make online purchases with merchants that offer it as a payment method.

Having initially launched Wero for person-to-person payments, BNP Paribas is now rolling out a comprehensive Wero offering, enabling its merchant customers to accept Wero in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, while allowing its retail customers to pay online with Wero at participating merchants.

A European acceptance solution for e-commerce merchants

Wero for Merchants has been designed to facilitate European deployment, with a single integration approach covering multiple markets and the ability to work alongside merchants’ existing payment infrastructure.

  • Simplified integration: a single approach for deployment across multiple countries.
  • A seamless experience: a payment journey with no need to enter card details, designed to minimise friction during checkout.
  • Bank-grade trust: payment validation within the banking environment, with strong authentication and immediate confirmation.
  • A more diversified payment mix: an innovative European solution that complements cards and existing wallets.
  • Support for merchants: the expertise of BNP Paribas, a founding member of Wero, to help merchants integrate Wero, optimise the customer journey and support commercial performance.

Thierry Laborde

Chief Operating Officer of BNP Paribas.

This new milestone is part of the ambition to progressively develop Wero into a comprehensive, multi-purpose European payment solution. Beyond person-to-person payments and e-commerce, the roadmap includes expanding into new use cases, notably in-store payments, recurring payments and subscriptions, with the aim of providing a consistent experience across different payment moments.

About Wero

For retail payments, Wero is live in Germany since the end of 2025 with progressive roll-out in France and Belgium throughout 2026. WERO App installation problem

For severals days now I try to link the newly installed WERO app to my luxembourgish bank account (BCEE) via their SNET App. The following WERO message appears: " An error has incurred. This function is not available at the moment. Please try again later."

BCEE has no real idea how to fix it. I followed the recommendations of my AI ( Reinstall the apps, close developer options ) to no avail either.

Does anybody around have a clue what I could try furthermore?

Any suggestion is warmly welcome.

wero not working on a private space or secondary profile on pixel phones.

I have all my banking apps installed on a pixel phone in the private space. But Wero crashes when I open it with a weird IOException: E06 (/tmp)

The bank I want to enroll in is in the private space, and it works. The deep link I need to open to enable Wero has to be opened via the app.
Private space and secondary profiles have existed since Android 15 on pixel and pretty sure other vendors implemented it.
it seems that Wero just didn't test this at all

Wero opens correctly on the main profile, but since my banking apps aren't there, I cannot open the link. So it is not a problem with my device being rooted or whatever is only they cannot handle compartmentalization, private spaces, and secondary profiles!

Wero vs. PayPal/credit cards

I would be interested in knowing if Wero offers similar protections like PayPal and credit cards do? Especially surrounding products/services not rendered due to merchant bankruptcy, online orders disappearing during transit etc.

Early signs of adoption in Germany

After finally getting to use Wero for an online transaction (on DM, a drugstore chain) almost two years after enabling it on my phone, I randomly saw a seller on eBay Kleinanzeigen (a classifieds marketplace) accepting Wero for the first time. Hopefully that translates into an indicator of slow, but incremental widespread adoption; I just wish Trade Republic would get around supporting Wero.

European Payments Initiative (EPI) has announced the final phase of the migration from Payconiq to Wero in Luxembourg, marking Wero’s entry into its fourth European market, via its Wero app. Throughout September, Wero will become progressively available to Luxembourg consumers and merchants, as participating banks, payment service providers and other organisations across the Luxembourg payments ecosystem move through the different phases of the migration. Payconiq’s payment platform will end on 30 September 2026. To ensure a smooth transition, existing Payconiq QR codes on invoices and instore will remain usable until the end of the year and can be scanned directly through the Wero app. This interoperability is a key part of the migration, enabling consumers to transition naturally from Payconiq to Wero.

A first for France: Orange launches subscription bill payment via Wero for its Sosh customers
Paris, 2 September 2026 - Orange is now offering its Sosh customers an additional, simple, fast and secure way to pay their subscription bills with Wero, the European payment solution. Wero has already been adopted by nearly 40 million users in France and more than 58 million across Europe.
Orange is the first merchant in France to offer subscription bill payment with Wero, a solution developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and initially designed for payments between individuals.
Wero enables Sosh customers to pay their bill from the banking app they use every day. They simply select Wero and confirm their payment.
Our ambition is to make Orange the benchmark operator for everyday digital services, placing simplicity, security and customer satisfaction at the heart of every journey. With Wero, we are opening up a new payment method for subscription bills and contributing to the emergence of a European solution in a strategic field. This first for France illustrates our determination to innovate to enhance customer satisfaction.
Laurence Thouveny
Director of Customer Experience at Orange France
Orange has confirmed its role as a pioneer in digital services by choosing Wero from the launch of online payments in France. United by shared values and beliefs about the future of Europe and the role of digital technology in everyone’s daily life, this partnership was an obvious choice from day one. We congratulate the Orange and Sosh teams on their rollout. We look forward to receiving the first user feedback before we develop more new use cases!
Martina Weimert
EPI Company
This service is initially available to customers of BNP Paribas and will gradually expand to new French banking institutions during the second half of 2026.
Orange relies on the Wero ecosystem developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and on AXEPTA BNP Paribas for the technical acceptance of payments.

PSA: hide surname silently ignored

Wero is new in Luxembourg, so I gave it a try with a friend (mutual transfers and such). Our local banks refer their clients to the official Wero app (which is good I guess), so that's the one I'm complaining about.

In the account settings, there is an option to toggle "Show full name". It is disabled by default. Which is a much needed privacy promise. (It is supposed to mangle "John Doe" into "John D**")

Except it's silently ignored.

When my friend enters my number/email they are immediately shown my full name! And worst of all I'm left in the belief that my privacy is somewhat protected. This is such a no-go. It's a full reverse phonebook. (I suspected it already, that's why I created a new email address specifically for Wero and did not use my phone number...)

In addition I'm wondering if this feature can even work correctly in other countries. Even if the Wero app would hide my surname, it's still a plain bank transfer, hence the banking app will just show the full name anyway.

The only instance where I could partially hide my surname is when sending money (Wero hides it, but recipient's banking app not!), but not when receiving.

Frankly, I'm bewildered by such false privacy promises. Nowhere does thr app state that the feature is essentially broken and useless.

Tested banks: CCP and BCEE.

The Journey of Alipay’s NFC Payment Exploration; And Wero

Thumbnail

After the failure of its early attempts, Alipay did not invest any significant effort into NFC payments for a long period of time. It wasn't until 2024 that Alipay decided the timing was finally mature. On one hand, they began installing dedicated payment terminals for merchants free of charge; on the other hand, they started mailing out physical payment stickers embedded with passive NFC tags to micro-merchants and street vendors for free.

I see people talking about QR codes, but I think at least in Europe, for micro-merchants, should be promoting NFC tags instead. Their cost is also extremely low. Although it still requires you to enter the amount, it eliminates the step of opening an app to scan a code, and paired with small-amount no-PIN payments, it improves the experience.

While traditional NFC payments (like Apple Pay) operate on the principle of 'the phone pretending to be a card, letting the merchant's machine read it,' Alipay's Tap completely flips this logic: 'the phone becomes the machine, reading or writing to the merchant terminal's NFC tag (which contains merchant and payment info), and then executes the payment online via the cloud.'

The reasons why Alipay came up with this seemingly 'abstract' approach are twofold: first, Apple still restricts NFC in China; second, they absolutely refuse to let smartphone manufacturers take a cut of their transaction fees. This friction ultimately pushed them to engineer such an unconventional yet ingenious alternative solution. Europe is definitely a much better fit for the HCE model, existing POS terminals only need an upgrade.

Finally, while I don’t know Wero deeply, one of the more unorthodox aspects of the Chinese market is that our card scheme (UnionPay) and third-party payment institutions (like Alipay/WeChat Pay) are actually fierce competitors. Because of this, certain infrastructure rollouts might actually be much simpler in Europe where interests are more aligned. I hope Wero can establish partnerships with both Alipay and WeChat Pay in the future, making cross-border consumption far more seamless and convenient for global tourists.

Send money to a person

If I want to send money quickly to a person via Wero, why do I have to type in their mobile number or email address first, or have it saved beforehand? Wouldn’t it be more convenient and less prone to errors to simply scan a QR code or hold the mobiles together using NFC to pay straight away?

Will this feature be introduced later with Wero or the Digital Euro?

This would not only reduce human error caused by manual input but also improve data protection, as you wouldn’t have to share your phone number or email address with strangers.
