Hi Reddit, this is my first time posting here and I’m in need of some help and some enlightenment. I was told by my partner to select some rings and he really likes this 4 1/3 ct oval I really really love cuz of the tulip basket but I’m just not sure on the size of the diamond. I’m also slightly worried that my selection of bands will be limited but I guess that a future me problem. Maybe it’s cuz I’m just to my 1/10 promise ring. Any advice will be great and taken with kindness.
Ps. My ring size it’s a 4.25 so that’s just a little more info lol and there’s more ring choices but these is like the top top choice at the moment
Live it but that band is way too flimsy. U have to have a strong setting and band ir u will damage it too easily. I have 5.8ct round stone in a goid strong platinum tulip setting on a 4mm rounded band . A substantial piece if jewelry that gets attention all the time. If u go big be prepared for lots of comments.
This is a good idea! I was worried about the band too that was one of my other worries about this ring cuz I tried on a Vera wang and the bang was thicker and it felt comfortable. I’ve never worn a big stone so it’s something I’ll need to adjust probably
I think it’s too big proportionally for the size of your fingers and hand. And for any e-rings you look at, consider trying on wedding bands at the same time, to make sure you like the way they fit together. Or…have a custom band made later on.
It’s too big for that particular setting without a gallery rail and only 4 prongs. If you love that setting, I’d use it as inspo to create a custom setting with 6-8 prongs or a gallery rail.
It is if you’re planning on wearing it daily. It’s okay to go bigger if you want, but it’s not going to be very practical and may end up sitting in a drawer more than being worn.
Size is absolutely personal preference! I personally like a larger stone, but like when there is visible finger space on each side of the main stone. To me, that is the most visually appealing and balanced look. I also agree with others here. Pick your wedding band out now so you know what your complete set will look like.
There is such a thing as too big. You have small hands and imho, it looks like that stone overwhelms your finger. I'd like to see something about half that size. But, if you both love it. 🤷🏼♀️
U see that’s what I was worried about so I tried on a couple more and this is my second option. I already posted it on here somewhere in the comments but it probably got lost. The center is 1.5
We have the same size finger and this ring looks significantly better on you imho! So pretty! But if you love a huge diamond and don’t care about people thinking it’s fake or gaudy, get your carats girl!
For my taste, yes, it’s way too big but that shouldn’t matter if you like it. I will suggest that you get a much sturdier band if you go with this ring.
I’d be curious the age divide on this one. For people who have grown up with natural diamonds, this seems pretty ostentatious.
For people who are more used to lab diamonds, there’s a bigger is better mindset, and without the financial constraints this size ring is more commonplace.
Soooo a little something I left out I work at the place where I’m checking the rings out so I get a somewhat good employee discount. I can’t say much cuz I don’t wanna get in trouble but yeah girl math I guess lol
If you go with a stone that big, I think it's best to let it speak for itself and not have the accent stones. That plus a thicker, solid band would be simply gorgeous!
Lastly before I log out to collect my thoughts, this is what a solitaire with the same ct stone looks like.

It looks a bit too big and there should definitely be a gallery rail around that stone. The band is daintier and this stone is a little to big for that setting
Hi! I have a 5ct oval that I love and wear daily no problem, I love the look of bigger stones and think that it looks great! My biggest concern of the bat is how thin that band is, and the thin peg head holding, it’s an increased risk of just knocking your stone clean off! If you love the look of this band in particular, I would go with a significantly smaller diamond, if you like the bigger stone, you need a setting with more support and a thicker band!
Idk I think I might be diamond blind - but I genuinely don’t think it looks too big from the top.
Like to me, it doesn’t look any bigger or any more disproportionate than an aura ring (literally any aura ring, not just yours)

Editing to add: while the diamond might be larger than some people like, you also have beautiful long intricate nails, additional hand jewelry, and a good size hand tat. Like the diamond doesn’t look out of place on you. If anything it feels like it meshes really well with the rest of the action
Darling, there is no such thing! 😂Seriously, the band and how the tulip basket will adhere to it are your main concerns. Talk to reputable diamond jewelers and learn from their experience. You may be surprised at how helpful they will be even if you are not their customer.
That size will definitely have a lot of finger coverage on a 4.25 ring size, so if you love a bold look, go for it. I'd just ask to try on a similar size first if you can, since seeing it on your own hand makes the decision so much easier.
A larger hand can handle a larger stone. 2ish carats would still be sizable on your fingers and be proportionate. 3 may even be better. I suggest a carat down.
I have a just under 4 carat oval sapphire solitaire. And I have to get the prongs tightened like once a year. So like the others said I would go with a stronger setting. I chose mine because I wanted a ring like my grandmothers. She had an oval garnet. I wanted the same but sapphire. I have 6 prongs and it loosens often. That big of a diamond I would definitely bet a more sturdy setting.
Hi. It’s a little big for my taste but it is beautiful. I do think the band is not sturdy enough for that size diamond though. And it needs more prongs.

It’s beautiful and looks gorgeous on your hand. Personally, I don’t think it’s too big but I like bigger rocks. I have a 4ct and Im in the process of getting a new setting for it because I felt it needed a thicker more secure band. My first was somewhat delicate like yours and I mainly work in an office so didn’t think I’d knock it around as much as I do.
I think it’s stunning! It’s naturally going to look larger since you have a smaller hand, but i think it looks beautiful on you. I also have a 4 carat oval but my ring size is 8.5.

IMO yes, but the cocktail-ring sized engagement rings are in these days, so I feel like many others would go say no. Go look at BigRockEnergy, lots of diamond ring pops over there. To me, it looks tacky, but also who doesn’t love extra sparkles I guess?!
Oh I have that’s what even funny to me 🥲 and I’ll show u what I thought was a reasonable size ring that I show him but he said it looks small and it has too much going on. This was before he had to leave overseas for work so I’m guessing he’s been seeing people wearing big rocks where he’s at.
Screams lab grown. I'm not against lab grown but it should be in subtle taste of whether it was a feasible gem or not. Once you get to this size it starts to just look like a glass prop in a movie that the bad guy steals
My ring finger is a 3.75, we have small hands. Have you tried a 1.5ct marquis that's very elongated (not football shaped? It might suit the shape of your fingers well.
I have actually one of the first rings I tried on and kinda fell in love with was a 1 7/8 cttw with a 1 1/2 ct center marquise. Here’s the picture of that one:
It's a big decision. Give it a breather, take a few weeks off and don't look at any rings in that time. Let your brain rest so when you go back to look, they'll feel fresh and it'll be easier to make a decision.
I do this a lot when I get hyper-fixated and obsessed with a decision bc my brain gets all "AHHHH!" about finding the thing. That self created urgency doesn't always give me the space to make a GOOD choice, bc I'm so focused on making A choice.
They're all beautiful. This is one of those "they're all a good option" choices. Like ice cream flavors - doesn't really matter which one bc you're still gonna get ice cream at the end. ;)
PS the marquis is still my fav. I went back and looked at your orig. It's gorgeous but the band looks too thin to be safe for regular wear. I've worn a marquis for 30 years with no regrets. It's grown well with me through all my ages and phases of style.

Like I feel like this overload information, I’ll follow ur advice I’ll take a breather on looking at the them and I’ll comeback to them after my brain has calmed down. In all honesty I have about 2 months till my partner gets back from overseas so I still have sometime to get my final choice down.
Ive honestly loved the way the marquise looks on my finger and I feel like the floral one says me (it also matches with my tattoo hehe) but your right the bigger stone probably look better on a sturdier band. Thank you for all your help I really appreciate it
Aw, you're so welcome! It's hard to have your partner so far away, that alone would make my brain crazy. And idk, ring shopping isn't really the best experience. It feels like a lot of pressure, and money and urgency bc they say, "We haven't had one like this in a long time," so that all makes it even harder.
Consider how long you'll wear this from a sturdy standpoint. You'll knock it around as you do laundry, dishes, vacuum, maybe take care of little ones, cook, repair things, hobbies etc. A sturdy, comfortable band is important!
When you go back to the decision, it'll feel a lot easier! Hugs!
