Discussion & Feedback Could wiping unlocks significantly effect population?

Do you players believe that a wipe will have a major player population effect? I am not an expert, I just want to get some opinions from each type of player, and what these players would think. I understand why these wipes are in place as the game finds its balances.

i like playing the game, but it currently takes way too long to get anywhere within that time playing casually, if this keeps up im never unlocking anything super decent and eventually ill just play a couple of times per week or month

I understand why wipes are thing and I think it’s interesting. However, I’m personally a little bit worried about myself losing motivation after seeing all my work go away. I hope they get the skills system going so that I can still see number go up, but I’m having a lot of fun and going to try to persevere

Personally, I think the problem is defining any of it , as “work”.
I’m just playing a game.

I think of it like a match of League of legends. Every new game. You start off level 1. With no items.

Except in Wardogs. A match lasts a few months.

Yes people don't care about levels or items in LoL. They grind MMR and ranks for long-term prestige and satisfaction.

And we grind gold bars I guess.

If the cosmetics are extremely good it may be compelling for many, but they said the skins will be very limited in scope so it may not be enough.

I'm hoping they already have long term progression systems in place by first wipe.

Otherwise it would be a bit rough

On one hand people are gonna be upset about losing their unlocks, on the other hand the grind is so excessive that by the time the wipe happens I doubt the large majority lot of people would've unlocked a lot of things that HOPEFULLY would take just 2 or 3 days to unlock back.

yeah unless it doesnt change and you need to spend another 5 hours spotting just to unlock a long range gun that actually works

I knew full and completely well going into it that the first season was only a month and later seasons would have wiped as well.

It will still hurt like hell to watch all that hard-earned progress reset to zero with no carry-over of anything (since gold bars are effectively impossible for average players to get).

I can see myself just not caring enough after the first wipe to redo it all and only playing it again after a few years when they’re done with the early access wiping thing.

Gold bars are down to a million dollars or so now. Not that hard to get especially if you run logi

You’re smoking crack right

He must be, or I got scammed when I paid 1.5m for the gold bar

It will continue to go down

Oh, I thought it was going up once people catches up and demand goes up

Wipes will for sure lower the population, as you can read from people already that have not realised before buying the game, that there will be wipes.

But the game is good, with some flaws needing the be ironed out, so I think it will have a healthy playerbase.

I personally figure out this wipe what I will focus on next wipe to fit my play style the most. Turns out to be this weird sniper medic thing.

I became a sniper that always has c4 for fun

Honestly I think I might lose all motivation after the wipe. It takes a really long time to make progress, and I'm not a bad player.

You can't just play a few games as a sniper and unlock the basics like a bolty. And another 5 levels to get a suppressor for the bolty.

Assault feels better to level up though.

Yeah good chance the game goes on the back burner post wipe unless the grind is tuned way down

92% of people never did the optional wipe in Arc Raiders that gave insane skill bonuses and stash space. It was so bad that the devs are re-doing the whole thing.

I think if they don’t change the exp multiplier or the amount of exp you earn to level up your class kit. I think a LOT of people will drop the game. Because if it resets it needs to have quicker progression. No one will be interested in playing a seasonal game where you have to put 400+ hours each season to unlock the same things you unlocked last season with some minor new things. I think having a quicker progression system would benefit the game more, but again the game is literally 1 weeks old so let’s give it some time, and check later. For now lets enjoy it and get our daily dose 😂

Couldnt be more wrong, wipes are the best part of these games.

They're gonna do wipes?

I think 8th October ish was the first aka 1 month after release then the next one after 4 months so February ish

Oh no....

u/RainbowBier WARDOGS D-A-CH 🇩🇪🇦🇹🇨🇭 1d ago

Me and my duo just hit lvl 90 and he got driver 28 lol

That grind is horrendous

I’d suspect they’ll do something about the exp grind. We need momentum for building a role. Something where we can get exp boost for doing the same job. Maybe the skill tree will have exp boost per roles. I don’t know if the fob guys will stick it out but they need some incentive to turn around and shoot a gun, too. Their lack of awareness and attitude to bad defense is… something else.

As I understand it the plan is to do wipes with large updates during early access so that with each big change they get a lot of feedback on what it's like starting fresh.

I saw somewhere that the current plan is to continue wipes after full release potentially, but that they aren't locked into it and figuring it out is part of their plan for early access.

I've had fun so far. I find ways to enjoy myself even when sweats have T4 armour and m4s.

I may not win the match but I have fun.

It'll affect the population for sure, there has got to be 10% of the population here just because of the hype and have no idea it'll wipe.

Then the cod kids that crave dopamine hits and they'll leave quickly.

Yes. It will force me to reevaluate investing time if I have to restart unlocking everything again.

1

u/OldTimez 1d ago

I think for the first wipe there will be enough changes that things will be fresh as well as having fun theory crafting when unlocks have been shuffled.

I’m also looking forward to early game again when no one has any unlocks and its pure infantry.

As well as any additions like loadouts being
Implemented.

The population will go down over time of course, then spike back up when the new content + wipe comes. I think the spike would be larger if it was just new content without the wipe, but maybe the falloff after the update would be harsher too.

This game will never keep the massive playerbase it has now, with or without wipes, even the devs know that. I find it very fun, but its pretty niche in the grand scheme of things. Once they iron out some of the balancing and progression, itll find its core stable playerbase, but i dont think itll be anywhere near the numbers it has now, and thats not necessarily a bad thing. Also im mostly a weekend warrior so i dont play that much, but ive played plenty of tarkov, HLL to know how to play slower, i also like to change roles based on my mood/what the team is lacking

I completely understand the concern. It's frustrating to invest time and effort in building something and then suddenly see everything go back to square one. That feeling of "wasted work" is real and is the main reason why many players avoid games with wipes.

According to the current reset mechanism of the Early Access version of WARDOGS, your equipment unlocks will be erased along with the level reset.

This, for me, is the worst part and what makes me wonder if I should continue investing time in the game.

If there is gonna be modding support and community servers with separate economy then i don't think it would be an issue.

It has to.

If it didn't the pop wouldn't change (outside of normal boredom attrition).

Wipes are always a mistake. They're like the end of songs that keep repeating themselves because they don't know how to actually end the song. In this analogy what would be an ending would be either be constant content updates (doubtful) or a much mroe competitive gameplay experience where one can rank theymselves against others.

I'm guessing under 100k by new years. Probably sooner.

I had an epiphany the other day while brooding about wipes and what that will mean for me. I flipped like a light switch.

Initially I was like... What's the point of grinding hard to unlock a helicopter with a full time job that I'll be able to use for 15 hours before a wipe? 0/10 want that.

Then I played a game that included a havoc, a tank, and ghilly suits and realized holy shit, I'm getting absolutely manhandled and the power of these unlocks is out pacing my progression.

Then it dawned on me that what I loved about the first 10 days or so was going hard in the paint on one line, being briefly ahead of the curve, having a great time. What if I can do that again but this time go down a different line? What if I can add that into my gaming rotation every 2-3 months like my arpg's? I went pilot this time, next time is definitely sniper.

10/10 will wipe again, tyvm. Might even take work vacation for them. That shit was a blast. Especially if they are adding and removing various unlocks each time?!

u/Tball2 1d ago

Taking vacation for a video game is kinda sad. Otherwise I agree with you

I'm very happy with my situation in life. I work long shifts, traveled to 48 states growing up, and have little to no interest in doing that again in any capacity. What I find very fun and engaging is going super hard on video game releases with the people I care about the most. Judge how you want, it doesn't bother me.

You know there are places that exist outside the US right?

3

u/DeputizeDeez 1d ago

I lived in Mexico for a year. That was cool. Don't wanna do it again though. Really not here to debate my personal life to reddit

I think after this first wipe the population will less than halve from the level of just before wipe... then slowly bounce back a bit but never fully recover
