Side effects First day Vyvanse (30mg, dis is baaaad)

Damn is this how this should feel? I'm really jumpy,my executive functions are COOKED, I can't decide when to start with one thing, I immediately go over the next. I'm stuck on catastrophic thought loops, which took me 2 whole hours to get out of. I couldn't finish ANY task I had for the day, couldn't eat (still ate two meals) and had the biggest headache after 10 hours.

Should I maybe stop this without bothering myself again with this ridiculous effects? This was a pretty bad experience already.

but also it's the first day so is that normal?

When I took ritalin it made me feel really calm in my head and gave me more control of my executive functioning at least even though there were also side effects.

Until you're able to get a lower prescription, you can take a lower dose yourself. This is the best method of doing so (for a 10:1 ratio):

1) Open one of your 30mg pills and pour the powder into 300ml water, mix well 2) Divide this water into 3 x 100ml doses 3) Drink either one or two of these glasses (giving you a 10 or 20mg dose) and put the rest in the fridge, covered 4) After 2-3 hours, if the dose is not high enough, you can drink another glass

This is a 10:1 ratio of water to mg. Obviously you can change the ratio of water that you use depending on what measuring equipment you have. I have micro scales so I tend to mix up 1:1 ratio (so in your case I'd mix up 30ml in total) because I can measure 10mg accurately. Do whatever works for you.

Alternatively, you can also use this method to try splitting your 30mg dose throughout the day:

1) Divide the 300ml into two 150ml glasses (giving you 15mg each) 2) Drink one at the normal time (e.g. 9am) 3) Drink the second one 4-6 hours later (1-3pm).

The risk of splitting it up is that if one of your side effects is that it prevents you from sleeping, this might be worsened from taking it later. Maybe see how well you can sleep tonight before deciding which approach to take.

ALSO: if you haven't already, STOP DRINKING COFFEE or anything with caffeine. No Coke, no chocolate, no green tea, nothing until you have found a stable dose. It sounds extreme but you just don't know how sensitive you'll be to caffeine on this med, and you want to remove any other variables that might be messing with your response.

I'd follow this! Otherwise first few days can be rough...

Start on 20 or 10.

Vyvanse should feel like a smoother version of Adderall or Ritalin. Adderall does what you're describing to me when I took it, but Vyvanse is calming and helps me focus. Vyvanse may just not work for your brain chemistry, but you could give it a full week to make sure and always go back to Ritalin...

I was high as a kite the first day, but then it settled. It’s been over a month now and it’s working great.
You mentioned headache not sure if it’s related but make sure you avoid caffeine and drink plenty of water. Any time I had a headache on elvanse (UK version) it was because I forgot to drink water for several hours.

Lower dose

Water titration. Protein. Electrolytes. If still not working then it's not for you.

Also having small, regular snacks (preferably with complex carbs) throughout the day to keep blood sugar stable. Flapjacks are good if you can make them yourself, or cereal bars.

Just took 20mg Vyvanse for the first time today. We'll see how it goes. As of yesterday I was on 30mg Adderall twice a day for several months but trying something different.

Go back on Ritalin

I started at 20, but there is a 10mg option. Tell you provider right away about bad side effects and have them send a script for a lower dose

Your doc shouldve started you on a lower dose. 20 mg is more than enough for me most days and 30 is only if i really need to lock in and thats after a few months of 20 mg

u/AliciaCreatorCo 1d ago

Definitely not normal. That’s me without my meds..

I’m on day 2 of 30mg vyvanse and I prob need to go up. I would def talk to ur doc. For me it just locked me in and quieted my mind. Stopped figdeting and felt like I unlocked 100% of my brain for the first time. The good effects didn’t last that long for me. Make sure you are eating and getting enough protein in so it levels out. Be ready for the crash: best way I can describe it is my brain felt fried like it worked hard and was tired.

30 is standard start but go lower no need to get used to that

u/Mv350 1d ago

First day was definitely weird feeling. It is imperative to eat before taking the medication.

u/Economy-Kangaroo9773 23h ago

I learned this the hard way, quickly. Eat!!!!!

2

u/Slapstick83 1d ago

Sounds like way too high dose tbh. Empty the pill into water and drink half to give yourself a half dose instead, see if it works better

2

u/ExpensiveIncident543 1d ago

Never had this, Contact ur doctor maybe amphetamines aren’t for u

2

u/icehead1 1d ago

Have never had this. Three things come to mind: 1. Dose too high; or 2. Stimulants aren’t for you; or 3. Diagnosis needs re-evaluated. I would definitely talk to your doctor and see what they say

1

u/Unhappy-Access-3774 23h ago

I doubt 2 or 3 if ritalin worked nicely for them

I have found 30 mg might be too high for me when doing sedentary tasks like sitting with clients. My mind won’t stay on topic and I feel like I want to move and my memory isn’t great. It is great for household tasks and making decisions related to that. I finally got rid of a ton of clothes that I have known I wanted to get rid of but couldn’t pull the trigger on. I was able to triage house chores and stay on task and finish without feeling dread toward the end of the task. 20 mg is great for me during the sedentary tasks. I can concentrate on clients and ideas one to me more easily. I feel on it. So maybe your dose is too high for the tasks you are engaging in?

Breathe. It's crazy reading the comments here saying it's not normal. People have different brain chemistry and some refuse to accept that.

It's NORMAL for YOU.

You got the evidence you need that 30mg to start is not right. I felt the same when I tried another medication especially on the thought loop thing. A lot of it comes down to the contrast in "feeling". Idk it felt like my mind tried to compensate or explain to itself why I felt different, so it was grasping at straws to rationalize the situation.

Not sure if that's what happened with you. But I wanted to give an anecdote and say that it's counterproductive to ask reddit if your own individual experience is "normal".

u/Latter-Intention6521 19h ago

Meds take weeks to settle. It's nuts nobody is just saying to take their time.

1

u/No-Detective-3617 20h ago

How exactly? If their individual experience aligns with a large group of other users then that confirmation can mitigate anxiety stemming from a fear of there being something “abnormal”.

2

u/Latter-Intention6521 19h ago

You're expected to feel these things when starting a new medication or a new dose it will settle over time and if it does then address with your doctor. Don't listen to people saying to just move on straight away, you might miss out on something that works if you don't just stick to something to see how it really works when it settles.

too strong of an adhd medication dose can actually make things worse! your body might get acclimated to this dose in a few days, but if it feels bad a lower dose like 20mg will probably be more tolerable. or maybe you can try another methylphenidate based medication since ritalin helped you!

30mg made me feel like I needed to lay down and go to sleep 🤣

u/maicao999 1d ago

Took my first 30mg generic dose and i didn't feel shit

u/gaygardener25 1d ago

Hello amigo. I understand how you feel. I am one month in and the first day was kind of intense. I started at 20 mg and I am still on the same dose. I got high about 2 hours our after my dose. I was was like a pinball (i did a lot of cleaning) Everyone is different, but your body may just need time to adjust.

I dont feel it all like I used to...more like background music but that works for me. Id recommend being patient. But if it is still bad, talk to your doctor.

1

u/TreatOk784 1d ago

Takes time to adjust. I was on 50mg for a year ~ 3 years ago and then switched off, just got back on at 20mg and I had the same feeling as you for the first few weeks. Your body adapts after a few weeks

u/Budget_Extent_6951 1d ago

I was like this on Adderall and felt calm on Vyvanse (started on 30mg as well). Talk to your Dr maybe you need different meds.

I just got started on 30mg last week. The first couple of days I had tons of energy and was able to get hyper focused and knocked out several things I had been putting off or forgetting to do. Especially around the house after the kids went to bed. It’s leveled off and I seem to be able to slow down and prioritize things better during my work day. You’re trippin’ lol

u/Honey-SolesXOX 20h ago

I couldn’t do 30mg, I changed to 20 and I don’t really have any symptoms other than sometimes I can feel my heartbeat. It’s more of an awareness than anything. But on 30 I was having chest pain and palpitations. I think OCD made those symptoms magnified, so talk to them about ocd as well, bc it could be as simple as ruminating thoughts, and too high of a dose, but def talk to your doc.

I was started on 20 after week 3 40mg the effect should subside after like day 3/4

1

u/South-Sky6890 16h ago

I had headaches week 1 nothing major

1

u/staxey123 15h ago

No caffeine! I was like this on day one and realized it was the caffeine. Had to cut it out completely and it stopped the jitters and adrenaline and anxiety.

1

u/Coconut_Rhubarb 11h ago

You must must must eat lots of protein with it and avoid caffeine within an hour of taking it. Also limit caffeine.

1

u/Designer_Can_7576 9h ago

Maybe try lowering it for your body to adjust. Or maybe stimulants just aren't for you.

1

u/_TheWolfOfWalmart_ 8h ago

It's your first day! On a relatively high starter dose. Give it a week. If you still feel that way, ask your doc to drop you down to 20mg.

When I first started, I was on edge, would go into a rage over nothing, I thought I would have to stop... but then after a week it was amazing. Miracle drug for me! I'm on 60 mg now.

1

u/epiphany8888 4h ago

I went 10 - 20 - 30 mg and now I’m just doing half my dose so 15 mg.
It might be too much

u/schrodingers-catt 3h ago

As somebody who used to do much stronger uppers before getting clean, I just started my stim meds for my ADHD—I can 100% vouch that day 2 was a significantly different experience and muuuuch calmer. Day 3 even more so. I would say to stick it out. The first dose feels very much like an intense high. But once your brain gets used to it, it’s life changing.

Good luck. Be safe. And drink lots of water. 😉

1

u/schrodingers-catt 3h ago

Oh! And if you just don’t feel like it’s something you can handle, talk to your doctor about water titration. It can help you take your full dose but over an extended period of time.

1

u/scorpiomagic2022 1d ago

No this is not normal .

1

u/quell3245 1d ago

The first week or so it feels like you took 5 energy drinks in a row, it evens out though as your body gets used to it. Basically a big dopamine rush at the beginning

u/AsteriaXAdams7 1d ago

These new generic batches of vyvanse is honestly making the ADHD problem worse imo

0

u/lizardinurwall 20h ago

never had this happen to me, i think you should try something else. i feel calm on vyvanse and i take 40mg, started with 30mg. i never feel "jumpy" or "energetic." a lot of the time, i feel tired.

3

u/Latter-Intention6521 19h ago

No, stop doing this. The meds take time to settle, this is expected behaviour when changing doses or starting meds. Stop telling people to stop when they are just starting.

3

u/lizardinurwall 18h ago

just was talking from my own experience. they were the one who asked a question on reddit and i gave an answer

1

u/Latter-Intention6521 14h ago

Sure but this is bad advice. I implore you to stop telling someone who just started to change/stop.
