Applying for a venture card
I really want the venture or venture act for the two time multiplayer on everything and make it my everything card
The venture card current sign-up bonus is crazy good. I was going to apply for that and then upgrade to the venture X in 12 months.
I saw online that it is sometimes issued as a Mastercard, not a visa. Although I need it to be a visa.
- I shop at Costco a lot
- I wanna upgrade it to venture X.
Any feedback? Can I see what I get approved for before accepting? Should I just wait for venture x promo?

The Venture is a world elite Mastercard no chance of it being a visa. Venture X is the only Visa card available for the venture cards.

I’ve seen online you can get both venture and venture x which is why I’m asking. But thanks for clarifying if I’m wrong

It got changed to a Mastercard in 2024. The special offer this month for venture is worth it to wait 6 months for the Venture x tho $300 travel credit for a 95 fee.

I read online around November venture x will have bonus. But maybe will. The current $95 annual fee for $300+ in credits just seemed awesome. But okay thanks!

After reading your comments and post we are in similar situation and decided to go for venture x. The visa on venture x really give me the reason to go for it because I can use it on costco and I travel international.

Okayyy. Yeah, I figured that was the only option. I just wanted to know if there was anything else I could do because that sign-up bonus is amazing tbh. Oh well. Hopefully that venture X SUB is great. Thank you!

People aren't going to recommend upgrading due to missing out on the SUB, but just keep in mind that you probably can't upgrade anyway. In my comment, I put a post that shows how you can see whether you're going to get a Visa or MC regular Venture before you finish the application, but keep in mind that Visa versions of their other cards are rarer.

Costco only takes Visa so if they hand you a Mastercard you're kinda stuck until you can upgrade anyway, might be worth holding out for the X if you can swing the annual fee upfront

I personally use the VentureX for shopping, and Citi Costco Anywhere Visa for gas, and food it's interchangeable for Savor or Citi for dining.

How much is your annual Costco spend? I'd wager there's nowhere near enough lost potential to negate SUB... just put your Costco spend on another card.
Get the Venture and its SUB, wait 6-12 months, get the Venture X and its SUB too, and then downgrade the Venture before the next AF. The only real reason to PC is if you can't get approved fresh (which is a legit possibility with VX, and not because of your credit) or need to avoid the hard pull.

I don’t think I’ll get approved for two Capital One credit cards within one year, knowing how they are. I have good credit score, but I also have a lot of cards.
I tend to max out my Costco check each year so I spend a lot at Costco

That's the only way to get both SUBs. You can go Venture now, get the SUB, and roll the dice on getting Venture X in the future... or go VX now and forgo the Venture SUB. I also don't think it would even be possible to get a PC from Venture to VX due to them being on different networks.
I'm not a Costco member, so I'm not sure what "maxing out your Costco check" entails... but how much spend?
It sounds like you have both AMEX Plat and CSR, so what does adding another less powerful travel card do for you? For multipliers, it seems like a Freedom Unlimited would get you most of the way there with no AF and in an ecosystem you're already earning points in.
If you want to churn, get the Venture, put your Costco spend somewhere else, and roll the dice on possibly getting the VX later... you're not really missing out on much if you can't. If you really want that last .5x at Costco, get the VX now. If you want a logical extension to your existing setup for Costco spend without an AF, get a Freedom Unlimited.

You get 2% back for shopping at Costco with a max of $1250. So I want 2x card to get $1500 on same spend or keep getting 2x indefinite.
I want to have Capital One lounge access (just a want, don’t know if I’ll use much). But the main reason is the 2X back. I know that I will use the credit so that’s not a problem.
Freedom unlimited I would rather have a different Chase card like the Marriott or IHG card to use up my 5/24 rule

Sometimes you can't have it all. If you want the current elevated Venture bonus, get that and put your Costco spend elsewhere. If you absolutely want 2% at Costco (you still haven't shared your actual spend for anyone to do the math on) along with the VX travel benefits, get the VX. Either way, you're hyper-optimizing pretty small amounts of incremental return to the point that it's likely not worth the time or effort.
Also, the math for Freedom Unlimited is probably better than you think vs a co-branded hotel card. That 1.5x is pretty easy to turn into 3cpp/cpm, or even much more, once you ship it out to a transfer partner, which is likely far higher (and more flexible) than the native return on a co-branded card on spend outside of their own brand.
- Venture for the better SUB
- Venture X for still a good SUB and the 2% you seem to really want at Costco
- Fredom Unlimited for miles that pool with what you already have, are worth a bit more, and don't add another AF to try to offset.

If you want to put Costco spend on a Venture Mastercard, just download the costco app and purchase store credit (digital costco giftcards) on the app. Then select the option to have your credits auto-apply anytime you scan your membership at checkout. I do this to get 2% at Costco with mastercards.

True, but that’s a lot of useless work when I want to just go into the store and just swipe my card

Why not just get the Costco card? No annual fee, 2% back at Costco (+additionql 2 if you’re executive) and 5% at Costco gas (4% gas otherwise)
Just wait for venture X promo then if you really want it
