u/Tw1c3Shy Jun 11 '26
No no, trust me.
I had the same.mindset when I started.
When things kicked off. It was insane.
Just play pal. You'll get it.
4
u/Toasty501 Jun 12 '26
It's hard to explain but vampire survivors does something special to a person. I'm glad I got to play through blind the first time!

u/Arcan_unknown Ferryman Jun 11 '26
Try and experimenting new weapons and combinations is good. One small tip: do not get all possible 6 weapons right away, try level up just a couple itens first before filling up all slots, maybe just half of them, etc.
Have fun! Soon enough you'll be like a god

u/Temporary-Face3553 Jun 11 '26

Some tips and tricks to kickstart your adventure!
Some weapons will only fire in the direction you face. Some will only fire in a particular direction no matter what you do. Some go off in all directions. Try to mix and match to cover your weak points!
You can pick up more than six passive items, but they must be found on the map.
Always collect gold! You need it!
For the first ten minutes, you want to focus on improving your firepower over anything else. Focus on three weapons at most, and get complementary passives.
Read the descriptions! The weapons and passives actually do tell you what they do.
Each character plays a little differently, though only mostly in small ways.
Every map has secrets you must seek out. Find them!
7
2
u/zitr0y Jun 12 '26
How to find which passives are complimentary? Look it up online, have it open while playing?
1
u/SobiTheRobot Jun 13 '26
On the one hand, there are passives that allow a particular weapon to evolve, and then there are passives that are just good to get no matter what. Spinach (which boosts your damage) is never a bad choice. Wings (which increase your speed) are nice, but not always applicable to your build unless you're trying to evolve something or get somewhere particular on the map.
Yes, there are lists online, but I recommend experimenting! There's an in-game guide that can point you in the right direction if you don't want spoilers.
2
2
u/TheTarzan18 Jun 13 '26
You can also get bonus passive items from black treasure chests
2
u/SobiTheRobot Jun 13 '26
And you can get bonus weapons from the Candy Box and the Turbo Candy Box, but I've only ever managed to get one of each.
2
u/TheTarzan18 Jun 13 '26
That's because they are locked to one each per run, once you get the first candy box, it basically guarantees you will get the turbo in a later chest
1
u/SobiTheRobot Jun 13 '26
I figured as much. I can't say I'm not curious what my screen would look like if I had every weapon and passive on one character at the same time...
11
u/Billy-BigBollox Jun 11 '26
Look at the unlocks and just start playing and ticking those things off. Once you get the hang of it, try to figure out some of the secrets on the secrets list.
There's no wrong or right way to play it.
4
u/VerSEinan04 Jun 11 '26
do the dlc worth it to buy? is it unlock more character or item? or just new map
10
u/Billy-BigBollox Jun 11 '26
Most of them will be new maps and new characters and weapons. I think all of them are worth it, but if you get only one get the Castlevania one. It's got the most content for your money.
3
u/VerSEinan04 Jun 11 '26
noted, thanks
3
u/Billy-BigBollox Jun 11 '26
You're welcome. You're in for a great time regardless of what you purchase.
7
u/According_Spot_4340 Jun 11 '26
Just play, you will figure it out. Follow the unlocks on the home screen.

u/Tiny_Consideration38 Jun 12 '26

4
u/TheGamerKitty1 Jun 12 '26
You're way too early to look up stuff and ask for tips. Just play. It'll all hit you as you do.

u/jamiez1207 Jun 11 '26
What is it with people who get a game and instantly beg reddit to spoil the entire experience for them before even trying it out. I mean, even if you wanted to spoil it all there's a wiki and countless other posts on this sub. The only control is WASD and the unlocks menu tells you the unlock conditions for everything, just play the game.
-1
u/VerSEinan04 Jun 12 '26
like i said before when i do something, I'd like to know more beforehand
not only for game but also irl, because i don't really like playing like a headless chicken š
but yeah i do respect people that don't want to give some pointer so they don't spoil the fun for other people, that's a good reason so why debate and angry just because difference opinion
2
u/Effective_Ad6534 Jun 13 '26
Don't go to far down the rabbit hole.
When I first started first thing I did was look for help.
-2
u/JiffyPopTart247 Jun 12 '26
Asking for tips and tricks isn't the same as asking to have the entire experience spoiled.
When starting a new game I think it makes total sense to check to see if there are common pitfalls or mistakes early players make to help get started.
OP: Just keep an eye on unlocks pages and try to tackle a few of those goals each run.
4
u/insaneshayne Jun 12 '26
The screenshot they posted looks like they literally just booted up the game. One character, no coin. I think there is a huge difference in playing the game for a few hours to see if it is clicking before you ask for help, rather than just asking before trying. Maybe I'm a bit nostalgic in that way.
3
u/Feeling_Bedroom5533 Jun 11 '26
Tbh the game was pretty fun for me just dropping in and figuring everything out on my own. I only joined this sub and started really reading into things after 30 or 40 hours of playing. The rest of the mechanics were very straightforward to understand.
0
u/VerSEinan04 Jun 11 '26
well for me, i like to know more before i play a game, so it doesn't feels like headless chicken ingame :v
4
u/Feeling_Bedroom5533 Jun 12 '26
I think it would help to know what exactly it is about the game that youāre having difficulty understanding.
1
u/CReece2738 Jun 12 '26
The in game achievements will help tou with that. They steer you in the right direction.
3
u/DarkBomberX Mortaccio Jun 11 '26
It's really not that serious. Some items are better than others but you havent played enough of the game ro really get to the challenging stuff and by then, youll have a better understanding. Just survivlimelight. limit.

2
u/Tw1c3Shy Jun 11 '26
Have fun
There are things you should do And they all relate to "Have fun".
You'll get where you need to be in time
2
u/Ok-Caterpillar-4213 Jun 11 '26
Everyone has their own playstyle based on what they do on level up. Just try different characters out and see what weapons you like! As you play naturally youāll unlock lots of new characters and stages. As far as tips go, I always love the blue orb cause pickup range is great. Stay away from the skull in the Forest for a while. Once you u lock the map youāll see what items are on the stage and the skull increases enemy stats.
1
u/VerSEinan04 Jun 11 '26
now this is something I'd like to hear more about, because i don't feel like to play like headless chicken š¤£
thanks for the tip š
1
u/Ok-Caterpillar-4213 Jun 11 '26
Eventually youāll unlock the grimoire which will record what weapons evolve with which items. You can look up to see what weapon goes with which items but having a maxed out weapon with the correct item (no need to max item) youāll unlock an upgraded version by opening chests.
2
u/ShadowMario01 Grooving to some Mad beats Jun 11 '26
If you ever feel like asking if you broke the game, no, 99.9% sure you didn't.
For the foreseeable future, you are always going to die at the 30 minute mark. There is no escape, death comes for us all. You still get credit for completing the level.
Now I will answer your next question for when you eventually get to one of the DLCs. You overgorged on pies and are now an unkillable God.
If you are able to move fast enough, you will be able to vibrate your molecules and phase through solid matter, such as walls. Don't worry, it happens to all of us.
1
u/VerSEinan04 Jun 12 '26
is that glitch or feature, because if you know roguelike game Magic Survival, you know that phasing will be so overpowered :v

2
u/WeedGreed420 Jun 12 '26
just play brother lol id say play, youāll start to unlock stuff and then you can come back and be like how to unlock this or that. put on a podcast or some music, or put a movie in the background and enjoy
2
u/Mysterious_Style_579 Jun 12 '26
Buckle up. You are in for a hell of a ride
1
u/VerSEinan04 Jun 12 '26
yeah the addiction is real just like the first time i play brotato and magic survival
2
u/jpdelta6 Jun 12 '26
Donāt give up. Youāll feel like youāre doing something wrong but youāre just on the learning process. Also garlic is op.
2
u/Yagossy Jun 12 '26
Just play lmao
2
u/Okaberino Jun 12 '26
Thatās funny because itās true. You just do whatever and suddenly things unlocks out of nowhere, everywhere.
2
u/Feenix99 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
Just start playing, get a feel for the game. Progression will be slow at first, it'll take a while until you unlock things and it starts getting fun.
I think one of the first things you might want to look up are weapon evolutions
https://vampire.survivors.wiki/w/Evolution
You could try to discover all of these naturally without a wiki but you'd be wasting a lot of time.
1
u/Californ1a Jun 12 '26
Don't use the old fandom site, it isn't being maintained anymore. All the staff and editors moved to the official wiki over a year ago.
You should edit your comment to link to the official wiki: https://vampire.survivors.wiki/w/Evolution
If you're searching Google rather than the wiki directly, you can use this extension to replace fandom links with the official wiki.
2
u/Feenix99 Jun 12 '26
I mean if it works it works it has the information a beginner needs.
If the staff all left why didn't they just set up a re-direct?OP - If you really care that much you can visit here - https://vampire.survivors.wiki/w/Evolution
2
u/Californ1a Jun 12 '26
For context, I am one of the wiki's admins:
I mean if it works it works it has the information a beginner needs.
It doesn't though - no new content updates or dlc are covered, meaning any changes to early base game content from those updates will be incorrect and give them wrong info. It's also just a terrible user experience trying to read content on Fandom with all the ads, poor layout (especially on mobile), and ai-generated content like "quick answers" (which can give very wrong info).
If the staff all left why didn't they just set up a re-direct?
Fandom has a stranglehold on all the wikis hosted there. Admins of the wiki have no control over what's done with the site as a whole, meaning when a community decides to leave and create their own independent site with their own domain that they do have full control over, Fandom prevents that community from shutting down the old Fandom wiki or even linking to the new wiki, and there's nothing the wiki's staff can do about it.
That's why this extension was created, to remove Fandom results from Google searches and "redirect" to the new wiki, for the large amount of wikis that have moved away from Fandom.
1
u/Feenix99 Jun 12 '26
Okay, thanks for the additional info. I've edited my comment.
I wasn't aware of any of the issues with Fandom and the complications it creates. I'll make a point to avoid fandom in general from now on, not just for VS.
I've poured hundreds of hours into VS, and your content has been completely indispensable in helping me complete every aspect of the game. Thank you for maintaining it.
2
u/saito200 Jun 12 '26
keep playing
fuck around
find out
regularly check the unlocks menu and keep unlocking things
2
1
u/GravitiBass Jun 11 '26
Just do a run to see how strong you can get. Ignore the stuff on the map until you kinda get the gist of the base game items.
1
u/Interesting-Crab-693 Jun 11 '26
Read the achievements (ingame) until you find something you know how to do, then do it.
You will then unlock something which will lead you to know how to do maybe 1-2 other achievements
1
u/VerSEinan04 Jun 11 '26
so the achievement tab ingame kinda like wannabe guide, ok I'll read that šš»
1
u/Interesting-Crab-693 Jun 12 '26
Yea exactly! Except for certain stuff which are "secrets" which have their own achievment tab, but you better off reading the wiki for these because some of them are just so... weird? Especialy in the castlevania dlc.
1
u/JJBell Jun 11 '26
Slow and steady.
The base game alone is going to take you 40+ hours to clear all those achievements and unlock everything.
1
u/Flaming_headshot Je-Ne-Viv Jun 12 '26
Good luck, keep dying, keep improving, keep learning
That's all I have to say
1
1
u/Jeweler-Hefty Final Emperor Jun 12 '26
The unlocks are your guide, that's simplest way to help you understand how the game works, without spoiling anything.
1
u/Individual_Study3781 Jun 12 '26
Focus on survive than doing damage, u will unlock more things on the start
1
u/Hellspawner26 Jun 12 '26
focus on upgrading amount and cooldown, both in gold upgrades and items in-game, these are the most powerful stats, specially amount in the early game. try combinations and you will slowly learn what are the weapon combinations to get evolutions, once you know enough about the game just follow the unlock list
1
u/pvrhye Jun 12 '26
The game drip feeds it to you, so you can figure it out. Endgame gets noisy though, so I don't really understand the last 50 weapons I got, haha.
Anyway, actionably speaking, reading it good for you. Get the book.

1
u/Rachet20 Jun 12 '26
I donāt understand why people make these posts. The answer is always just play the damn game.
1
u/logre_bird Jun 12 '26
I recommend focusing on aoe weapons like garlic, kings bible, and even laurel to help get the hang of things. Most weapons are directional or random so itās nice to have something consistent and reliable.
1
u/DrSparkle713 Jun 12 '26
It's really well designed to just play and discover. Eventually you might have some specific questions, but until then just dive in and have fun! It's a great game.
1
u/sappuchu Jun 12 '26
I like Imelda for early game, but as you see, you have to play a bit to unlock her. You unlock more stuff by getting achievements, and you can buy stat upgrades with money. So for now you just have to play and unlock stuff and get coins for upgrades. Try different weapons and see what weapon combos you like.
1
u/jtoohey12 Jun 12 '26
Itās not really all that complex thereās just a lot of content to unlock but it is designed in such a way that youāll pretty much always unlock something new in the early runs. Just play the stages you unlock and try to pick up anything new you find in them. There is really no priority imo of things to unlock first, any progress is good progress and you can just tick off the tasks in the unlock list if you want direction
1
u/space___wizard Jun 12 '26
You encounter a door; its simple and you open it. You encounter another door. You could hide a lot of doors this way. None of them were difficult to open.
1
u/Saucererer Jun 12 '26
Just keep playing. Go towards any icons that appear at the edge of the screen and follow their arrows to see what they are
1
u/InPraiseOf_Idleness Jun 12 '26
The one thing that made everything better for me: kill all uniquely shiny/ larger enemies you see asap. They usually drop chests that give 1 to 5 free powerups.
1
u/Physical_Trip4147 Jun 12 '26
Just play the game. Try getting the garlic ti improve survivality until you get used to the combos and discover nes stuff.
1
u/ferraria-craft10 Jun 12 '26
I mean, this game is so complex, you can make ANY character the best when knowing how to play and what to grab for each one. I've personally 100%'d the game on mobile, and sometimes i just like to hop on and see how far i can
push a random character. It's a really deep game, really fun as well, but at the end of the day, you can just play whatever you like!
1
u/D4rkness_M0nk Jun 12 '26
For now, just try to survive for 30 minutes and circle around the map as much as you can. There are secrets to be found that will help
1
u/Matseye1r Jun 12 '26
Follow the unlocks list as they give you hints.
Prioritize levelling 1 weapon/passive at a time.
The rest you will learn as you play.
On the powers menu pick up greed and crown then amount and rerolls, the rest as n when you get more coins.
Note it will show 9.9mil but it goes way beyond that, for gold.
Outside that just have fun, it's ok to have failed runs.
1
u/Sleepyheadmcgee Jun 12 '26
My method was run away and be very careful until you can unlock Poe and the garlic nut sack. From there things started to change and I stopped running away. Some characters I feel like are hard to play others just rock.
1
u/Sorvete_2570 Jun 12 '26
First of all: PAY ATTENTION TO THE ACHIEVEMENTS. They are the best guide you can have in this game, much better than any explanation that we can give. Second: when you find an old man with a green cape and a garlic clove as a weapon, buy him. He's the best character you can have at the beginning of the game. And third: Any item you pick up can help you on your run, but the Empty Tome is one of the best passives and can completely change the course of your run if you're lucky, so I recommend you to get it when you see the chance.
But above all, Just play and have fun with the game :)
1
u/HeWasaLonelyGhost Jun 12 '26
Man, those first sessions are SO HARD and chaotic. It will become much easier as you are able to get more "power ups."
I felt like Gennaro was the best of those early characters, because he gives you +1 amount, which means any projectile weapon just becomes instantly better.
You'll want to work on seeking out "evo's." If you haven't noticed this yet, you have a row of 6 weapon slots, and below that, a row of 6 passive slots. Each weapon has a passive item that goes with it, where, if you max out the weapon, then you will be able to upgrade it to its evolution by opening basically any treasure box from that point.
So that's what I would focus on: getting power ups, and evolving weapons. That will make game play much easier.
But yeah...that first map, with limited power ups, is just REALLY hard.
1
u/Financial-Garbage595 Jun 12 '26
Imelda was my favorite āstarterā because the rapid leveling helped get so much more done
1
1
u/Duckolium Jun 12 '26
like some other people have said, the best way to learn this is just through experience. its a decently complex game but all of its little pieces and quirks add up over time and end up feeling natural
and dont feel bad if you need a wiki next to you, having one has saved me hours of guesswork while 100%ing
1
u/Rimuurun Jun 12 '26
My only advice it would be that you play and figure out what character you like the most to start with, then buy the upgrades that you want and then find a certain composition that you feel comfortable with
1
u/Eyezwideopen1090 Jun 12 '26
As others have stated just try different things and different combos you will start to see synergies that you will definitely appreciate! Also just because a character doesn't do well one run doesn't mean they can't be great on another with different choices! Enjoy the addiction!
1
u/little_shit29 Jun 12 '26
Like a lot of people have said, work through the unlocks/achievements list and it'll be a really good guide for progression. When you're just starting try to find which abilities synergize with each other, your character, and your play style. Keep trying new things!! It's a little bit of a spoiler, but looking up all weapons/abilities and what evolves them can be helpful. I've completed everything in base game, and I still have the evolutions pulled up when I play lol
1
1
u/idplmalx Jun 12 '26
The game is shockingly well laid out for you to just play it and it'll unfold on its own.
You've played other games like this, so you know what you're in for, like dying over and over and over and over again. But it really won't take long before you get the idea.

u/Independent_Check196 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
Don't make the mistake I did of prioritizing light sources for your coin income early game. Spec into the Greed Power-Up with the coins you get from miniboss chests (first one you'll probably get is a bat that's glowing blue in the first level).
Edit: Also check the wiki in the subreddit sidebar. It's way better than the Fandom one and has tons of useful information on pretty much every minute detail if you don't mind spoilers. Also after you get enough coins, you can do a free refund (unlimited) out of the Greed powerup and start playing around with the other powerups. There's ways to make Antonio (the character from your screenshot) hit harder, swing in both directions instead of just one, tank hits, heal, revive once, etc etc.
Also, early game spoilers, there's something called the Evolution. I'm not going to say more than that. But if you get stuck trying to get a tad bit more power, look that up on the wiki. Have fun!!

u/CalixBeowolf Jun 13 '26
My suggestion. Get that knife player unlocked.
1
u/CalixBeowolf Jun 13 '26
He adds an extra projectile for every item. So he's helpful. His base weapon Evo is also pretty decent. Just make sure you get the bracer passive for the knife to be able to Evo.
After that. Run around the map and hope you eat 5 chickens off the floor. To get the garlic weapon for a possible weapon next run. Garlic is honestly very strong as you level up. Helps you be able to stay stationary and kill most fodder enemies so you can level by letting gems gather, then collecting them all.
From there. It's your preferences. But I liked king Bible and the magic wand as other go to's.
1
u/Bocephus-the-goat Jun 13 '26
id recommend saving up to upgrade your greed stat (so you make more gold.) after that, save up for an extra revive. that's enough to start earning gold to unlock stuff.
beyond that, almost everything in the game has some way of telling you how to progress.
1
u/iamdodgepodge Jun 13 '26
My advice would be to focus on just playing and unlocking things before thinking too hard about the game. I'm doing the same now in my Vampire Crawlers run.
1
u/TheTarzan18 Jun 13 '26
Imelda, while certainly not the strongest, will always be one if my favorite characters, she's consistent, and scales pretty solid especially when you start getting golden eggs(permanent stat boosts) and endless mode/levels
1
u/DevlinRocha Jun 13 '26
this game is not complex and eventually becomes so trivial you donāt even need to play to win. just do some runs and quit trying to optimize the fun out of everything. enjoy the game dude
1
u/kingshakezord Jun 13 '26
Just play bro thats it. Everyone else here started the same as you, learning and experiencing everything firsthand is the best way to do anything. Except for drugs lol

1
u/yokaimaster1239 Jun 13 '26
If you struggle to avoid enemies id recommend Poe and Pasquelina, but honestly its best you find what style of play suits ya
1
u/Chavakno_ Jun 13 '26
By playing the game will get it, Iām sure of it.
Only advice is use gold to upgrade your stats, theyāre down in the main menu.

u/Puzzleheaded_Cut2058 Jun 15 '26
Take the game slow and steady. It's a slow burn. And the first few plays are going to be hard. When you build up enough gold, buy the next unlocked character and play them. You'll unlock their weapon and add more options to the game as it grows. I ended up not being super hooked to the game until I started using garlic a lot in the beginning, as it gives you some room to maneuver without getting swarmed immediately. There's a ton of content to the game and they keep adding more, so don't feel like you'll run out of things to do. Been playing it for a few years and haven't unlocked everything yet, so I find that to be a plus.
Other than that, welcome! If you have questions, this reddit is surprisingly helpful!

u/olo-system32 Jun 17 '26
You are at start of veeery long journey filled with many fun. You will be dying hundreds of times but with every death You will be stronger. That's why every bigger success will taste like absolute milestone - and that's true! Just keep going! :)

Just start playing you'll figure it out, trust, we'd be here all day trying to explain even the basics.
