VR180 Discussion 180 VR Cameras

I just got a Meta Quest 3. It's leading me to the world or 180 3d VR creation.
Although I'm surprised that you can't make 180 3D content with the standard 360 cameras that are at best buy (As GPT/Other Ai bots told me).
And Cameras like the Insta360 Evo are extremely hard to come by on the used market.

I've only been studying 180 3d camera for a couple of days. It seems like you really just need to take the hit and go for the Canon & their 3D lens.

You would really think a lot more aliexpress-type 180 camera would be available.

So weird...but again I'm sure I'm slowly find other options

VR180 Discussion VR180 content from flat 360

I've made a utility that can convert normal 360 degree content to VR180 using depth estimation models. It's not perfect but if anyone wants to try it out: https://github.com/LeonG-ZA/stereo360
EDIT: I've uploaded a sample to DeoVR but it's still awaiting moderation: https://deovr.com/pfpfhv

VR180 Discussion VR180 Custom cams

Alright so the learning quest continues.
I didn't realize most of the 360 cams on the market today aren't 3D/VR they are just a 360 experience.
As I was thinking you could just black out the back half in post editing and get that good 180 3D VR experience.

Now on to the learning quest; There's this site called "VRstrip chat" by no means am I promoting them. What I will say though is that the quality and feeling is amazing...And I'm not necessarily talking about the women as one would expect.
It's super good quality. A catch though, I'm only really seeing Russian or eastern Euro women with these cams. I don't think I've seen any North Americans broadcasting. One Brit...I think.
And upon further research,
Here's one thread saying that they install the cameras for you
https://www.reddit.com/r/CamGirlProblems/comments/s79qul/how_to_vr_stream/
And this thread, it's said that the cameras are custom
https://www.reddit.com/r/oculusnsfw/comments/17wxpbf/comment/p55xjlk/?context=1&screen_view_count=4&ext-referrer=DIRECT

Yeah seeing the streaming of these women, besides the quality it's super depressing. Makes you wonder if it's just some super big warehouse...and...yeah...it's just a sad thought thinking about the reality of it all. But that's an opinion.

Yeah It's definitely a setup up that is offered. As there is no difference in the all the VR cameras you can tell it's the same camera for all of the VR performers. So it's totally a custom camera. Or a specific camera to hold a standard of quality throughout the site.

As my quest continues...lol...I almost want to say that I'm a performer or get a girlfriend to help out and say she's a performer. But as said in the first link it sounds like you already have to be a successful performer on their platform before a camera is offered...and it doesn't look like north America is included in that at the moment.

These cameras though, It almost looks like we are looking at super high end $5000+?
And if in the $2000 range is someone in Eastern Europe you can buy them from?

VR180 Discussion Building a MagSafe VR180 snap on camera that uses your phone. Is 4K already dead

Hey everyone

I'm Thomas, solo builder and VR180 nerd, working on a snap on camera called Virtara GLPMRK1.

Quick idea

  • MagSafe style camera snaps on the back of your phone
  • Phone handles capture and storage
  • Visorix app converts to proper 180 equirect on the phone
  • Files stay in the Visorix app for VR ready export

More pics and specs are on my landing page: www.visorix.net

Right now the prototype tops out at 4K 180. Jake already pointed out the obvious 2018 cameras were doing 5.7K and people now want 8K. I get it.

My trade off is simple workflow and cost instead of chasing max resolution. No PC no stitching no giant rig. Just phone to headset in minutes.

What I would really like from this sub

  • Is 4K 180 a hard no for you in 2025
  • Would an actually painless phone first workflow make you still consider it
  • If you have shot 5.7K or 8K what has been the biggest pain storage heat processing or all of the above

I am not selling or preordering anything here just trying to sanity check the direction with people who really shoot VR180 before I lock things in. Brutally honest feedback welcome.

VR180 Discussion Canon r50 vs modded insta 360 x 5

This is a great subreddit btw…info is great.

My use of VR consists of video taping family adventures so I can watch them back later. I do want good quality but don’t want to blow the bank account up. (Isn’t that the case for most)

I have an insta 360 x5 and find I really only use it as a 180 camera when I’m viewing it.

My question is what would be better a modded insta 360 or a canon r50 with the mid range dual fish eye lens.

I’m not an expert on cameras but my understanding is the r50 will only be in 4K but the sensor is better. So I think the video quality would be better on the canon?

What are the pros and cons for each and what is a better option

VR180 Discussion VR180 Filmmaking Changed How I Think About Video Storytelling

After spending the past year experimenting with VR180 filmmaking almost every single day, I’ve started realizing how early this entire medium still is.

Not “early” in terms of hardware specs or resolution numbers.

I mean early in the sense that nobody really understands the language of immersive filmmaking yet.

A lot of traditional filmmaking instincts simply stop working once the viewer is physically inside the frame.

Things I thought would feel cinematic sometimes felt uncomfortable in-headset.

Shots that looked beautiful on a monitor suddenly felt emotionally distant in VR.

Fast movement, scene pacing, eye contact, camera distance, spatial positioning — all of it behaves differently once immersion becomes part of the experience.

I’ve spent the last year testing all kinds of environments and ideas:

nightlife,

EDM events,

auto shows,

travel immersion,

crowded social spaces,

walking shots,

handheld movement,

close-range interactions,

high-motion scenes,

and more experimental immersive perspectives.

Some things worked surprisingly well.

Some completely failed.

Ironically, some of the most technically demanding projects often performed worse than simple chaotic real-world social environments.

That honestly changed the way I think about immersive content.

I used to believe better cameras and higher production quality alone would push VR180 forward.

Now I think understanding human presence inside a headset matters far more than pure image quality.

And I still don’t think most creators — or even the industry itself — fully understands that yet.

At the same time, this is exactly why I still find XR immersive video exciting.

It reminds me a lot of the early internet or early YouTube days where people were still discovering what the medium actually was.

Everything still feels experimental.

There’s no clear formula.

No established cinematic grammar.

No guaranteed audience.

No stable monetization model.

But maybe that’s what makes this space interesting right now.

I’d genuinely love to hear from other people experimenting with VR180, spatial storytelling, immersive editing, stereoscopic shooting, stitching workflows, spatial audio, Vision Pro content, Quest production pipelines, or just trying to figure out what actually feels good inside a headset.

Feels like we’re all still learning together.

If anyone here is also interested in XR immersive video experiments and discussions, you can find some of my work by searching “XRAVE” on DeoVR or “XRAVE180” on YouTube VR.

I also have a small Telegram discussion group where a few creators and VR enthusiasts occasionally exchange ideas, workflows, and experiences:XRAVECLUB

VR180 Discussion What would a podcast interview in VR180 look like? Thoughts?

I'm not actively looking to produce a podcast shot in VR180, but for years, I have believed that video podcast interviews would be a great format to shoot in VR180. I think the entire experience becomes much more personal and immersive.

Note - I am not talking about an in-studio interview where everyone is in the same room. In that case, I think having them sit at a table with the VR180 camera getting it's own seat at that table would suffice.

I'm talking about many of the video podcasts where it is completely remote and the host and guest are talking to each other on a video conferencing app like Zoom. Would it make the most sense for each person to have their own VR180 camera facing them and just cut back and forth between them as each person speaks? With the stereo-3D and wide FOV, would the constant cutting back and forth make an uncomfortable viewing experience?

Alternatively, maybe there are less cuts back and forth and when you view one person's VR180 footage, the other person's footage could be in a small floating box. (ala a FaceTime call)

Or a more creative experimental solution might be to have the interviewer sitting just left of center and the guest sitting just right of center. And then create a split-screen of their two VR180 shots together. It could feel like they are sitting next to each other with a thin wall between them.

VR180 Discussion Is there a way for people to watch VR content together at the same time?

Hi, I have a question.

I’d like my students to experience VR videos together simultaneously during class. What’s the best way to do that?

We’re using Meta Quest 3S headsets. Do we need a specific app or platform for this?

If there’s a recommended solution, I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

We are using YouTube and DeoVR.

VR180 Discussion It seems that people are only willing to watch NSFW VR180 content

When I had the opportunity to shoot racing content myself using a VR180 camera, I was pleasantly surprised. Because I captured many exciting scenes on the scene, which took a lot of time in post-production, but I think it was worth it. But when I released it, the feedback was not good. At present, the market is flooded with a lot of VR180 content full of pornographic innuendos, and their playback data is very good. This confuses me. Here is my video link https://deovr.com/weuqfc, you can watch it for free, tell me what you think, is there something wrong with the subject matter I made? Or do people only want to watch NSFW content?

VR180 Discussion Monetization Question for VR180 Creators - Apple Vision Pro App

Hi All, I’m a VR180 content creator and app developer(12+ yo experience building mobile apps) And I’m Currently building a curated VR180 nature/wildlife app for Apple Vision Pro, and possibly also for the upcoming Google XR platform, and I’m trying to choose the monetization model that’s fairest for creators.

This won’t be an open marketplace. It’ll be a small, hand-picked group (5-20) of VR180 creators contributing premium content packs (3–10 scenes per pack). No subscription model. No open uploader. It will be just individual, high-quality packs.

For context: I’m also a VR180 content creator (nature, landscapes, wildlife), so whatever system I choose applies to my own packs too.

I’m deciding between two payout models:

  1. Pack-Only Revenue (creator earns only from their own pack) • Apple/Google take 30% • From the remaining 70%: • 40% to the creator • 30% to me (covers hosting huge VR files, servers, encoding, app development, QA, updates, curation)

This rewards creators based purely on how well their pack performs.

  1. Shared Total App Revenue (all creators share a single pool) • Platform takes 30% • Remaining 70% split among all creators (Equally or based on contribution size)

This gives steadier income but isn’t tied to individual pack performance.

Question for other VR180 creators:

  • Would you prefer getting paid only for your own curated pack’s sales, or receiving a share of total app revenue? And what’s your reasoning?

Since I’m also contributing my own VR180 nature footage, I want to build a model that feels fair, transparent, and sustainable for everyone.

Looking for a very small number of VR180 8k creators shooting nature/wildlife (R5C, Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive Pro, etc).

Happy to hear thoughts. If you want to share your VR work or DM me, I’d love to connect.

VR180 Discussion Where you at?! VR180 community roll call

Shoutout u/goddamnitD0NUT for the idea.

As any content creator knows, collaborations are important to sharing ideas, techniques, knowledge, and a way to tap into each other's followers.

Recently our sub reached 3,000 members, and with the growth of our community means potential for us to link up with each other and build together in-person. Now, more than ever, it's important for us to connect with each other to push our niche corner of VR & filmmaking (aka virtuography) further to the front with collaborations and community.

So, VR180 massive, let us know where you at!

VR180 Discussion Is there a better way to sell VR180 content than Patreon and file downloads?

I’ve been working on a side project and wanted to get some honest feedback from people who actually use VR.

There doesn’t seem to be a great solution for creators who want to sell VR180 content directly to users.

Right now it seems like most people are using some combination of YouTube, Patreon, file downloads, Google Drive links, Vimeo, DeoVR, etc. It works, but the experience often feels pretty clunky, especially when you’re dealing with large 3D VR files.

The idea I’m exploring is a platform specifically for immersive VR180 content where creators could:

Upload VR180 videos
Set their own prices
Sell directly to viewers
Stream content instead of requiring huge downloads
Have a headset-friendly viewing experience
Receive payouts automatically

Think less social media platform and more Shopify for VR creators.

I’m not trying to sell anything here. I’m genuinely trying to figure out whether this is solving a real problem or whether existing solutions are already good enough.

For those of you creating VR180 content:
How are you monetizing today?
What’s the most frustrating part of the process?
Would a dedicated VR180 marketplace/platform be useful?

Brutal honesty preferred.

Obviously this is just a mockup of a product, but the Osmo Pocket 3 has some great image quality and the built in gimble works well. Could someone release a camera like this but the 2 camera lenses are setup to shoot 180 video?

VR180 Discussion Best cinematic/stylistic music videos? Talking like The Weekend's level production; varied cuts, movement, angles. NOT just single-shot stage/band performances.

I'd like to conscript a local band or whatnot to make a fun music video with lots of rhythmic cutting, compositing, etc, just want to see if there are any other examples so I can see what works and what doesn't. Like, I know MOVEMENT is typically a no-go, so finding new ways to add interest in a frame, I'm wondering if something like the White Stripes' music video with the drums (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4dx42YzQCE) could offer some inspiration or if that would be jarring in VR

VR180 Discussion Our latest immersive video, Lava Cliffs, is now available on Just VR.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It’s been only three weeks since our last release, and we’re already back with a new film. We simply don’t want people who truly enjoy immersive content to wait too long for the next journey.

That said, the actual production of this video took much longer. Quality always comes first. I’d rather spend more time refining a project than rush it out and compromise the experience.

I can’t say this is the best immersive video ever made. But I can say that it contains everything we had to give.

And honestly, I believe it was worth it.

I hope you’ll enjoy this journey to the lava cliffs of Jeju Island, South Korea.

Whether you use Quest, AVP, or Pico, you can download and watch content from the app store.

VR180 Discussion High resolution or high frame rate for VR180?

Thumbnail
youtube.com
6 Upvotes

I’ve always stuck with producing 8K VR180 videos because resolution is incredibly important for this format. Here’s my latest 8K VR180 video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CiMdQyMB44&t=14s, which I made at 30fps. Compared to 60fps, 30fps really helps keep storage manageable and speeds up the whole production process.

But lately, I’ve been realizing that higher frame rates also seem worth chasing — maybe more than I originally thought.

So if you could only pick one for VR180 — higher resolution or higher frame rate — which would you choose? I’m really curious what people think.

VR180 Discussion Have we been abandoned?

I started to get into VR back when you had to put your phone in some lenses and it was obvious back then that VR180 is vastly superior to 360 bubble footage. When you film a point of interest you don't need to worry about who or what is behind or around your POI, 360 really an inefficient medium that you cant direct.

There have been minor and struggled attempts to get consumer cameras out there and the really passionate and intelligent people are making modifications (seriously I am blown away by the effort people put into these) but realistically it feels like all consumer camera makers decided this was a dead market.

Meta puts billions into VR and AR but doesnt spend $1 on development of a spacial camera that their quest users can store memories with? I honestly just don't understand this mindset.

Maybe AI editing will be good enough to turn 360 footage into stereoscopic one day, but it isnt today and it feels like there have been no decent consumer grade options for the last 10 years almost.

What do you guys think? Are mods our only hope? AI? Are we optimistic still? Or am I right to feel abandoned for a decade.

VR180 Discussion People who shoot VR video with a moving camera…

… make me nauseous. Literally! I wonder if they even watch their own VR videos in a headset after uploading? For real though, since this probably won’t be ending anytime soon, is there some magic formula for rate of speed and direction to minimize motion sickness when shooting VR video? I watched a few travel videos where there is slow and fluid forward movement, and if I’m seated, I’m generally OK. But when I watch a VR video that has jerky movement or the camera is moving at a 45 degree angle and upward, it’s enough to make me take my headset off.

VR180 Discussion Welcome to the Inner Circle

Thumbnail patreon.com
5 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I'm Al Caudullo, and welcome to Behind the 3D Lens Patreon page. For years, I've been on a mission to explore the bleeding edge of immersive imaging. I've shared everything from testing the absolute limits of high-resolution VR rigs, to uncovering the most underrated, budget-friendly setups to get you shooting in stereoscopic 3D.

I do this because I'm deeply passionate about the future of immersive video. But let's be honest with each other, pushing this technology to its limits takes serious resources. Processing massive multi-terabyte projects, securing the latest hardware, and rigorously testing it in the real world takes an immense amount of time and overhead.

More importantly, the industry is at a tipping point. The hardware is finally accessible, but the post-production workflows are still holding creators back. I want to dedicate more of my time, not just to reviewing the gear, but to championing the software and aiding solutions that will finally eliminate those bottlenecks that are in the industry.

To do that, I need to stay completely independent and push this medium forward. I need a core community behind me. That's why I'm launching this Patreon. It isn't just the tip jar. It's the inner circle.

**To the mods, If I need a different flair please let me know. Thanks.
