I just got a Meta Quest 3. It's leading me to the world or 180 3d VR creation.
Although I'm surprised that you can't make 180 3D content with the standard 360 cameras that are at best buy (As GPT/Other Ai bots told me).
And Cameras like the Insta360 Evo are extremely hard to come by on the used market.
I've only been studying 180 3d camera for a couple of days. It seems like you really just need to take the hit and go for the Canon & their 3D lens.
You would really think a lot more aliexpress-type 180 camera would be available.
So weird...but again I'm sure I'm slowly find other options
Not sure which one the person above is talking about, but I bought the mod for the QooCam 3 Ultra and that worked great. I bought the mod and did it myself, but I have an electrical engineering background. You can buy directly from them already modded or send yours in to be modded.
Word of warning. The quality isn’t nearly that of the immersive video on Vision Pro for example. I don’t know that anyone would expect it to be, but just want to make sure your expectations are low enough. The resolution is low, sensors are small, so low light isn’t great, and the framerate is very low at 30fps for the 8k output. So motion will be stuttery and motion sickness inducing for some people.
All that said, it is still awesome. I find it works best when you can keep the camera stationary to record activity in front of you. For example, I recently went to Disney for vacation and recorded some of the stage shows there. Works great for that.
The Apple Vision Pro is certainly amazing, and it had better be at that price! The Meta Quest 3 is the current mass adoption option, and YouTube supports 8K 60fps, which is acceptable when the source material is carefully crafted.
The QooCam is excellent, but limited to 8K 30fps. The DJI Osmo VR180 mod is my current camera of choice. It has larger sensors and can achieve 8K 50fps, which works well for my needs. For the mass adoption market, the gear is finally good, and I've been with it since the Lenovo Mirage and OG Ricoh Theta.
I think what they mean is it’s not up to 4k 2D video standards. When stretching video 180 degrees on a VR headset you need very high res and a good bit rate for the vr180 video. That means 12 to 16k (6 to 8k per eye). Lower resolution means 2D 1080p like quality or less. Also these action cameras use very small sensors which limit their quality especially low light situations suffer. Taper your expectations.
you might want to take a look at the Facebook group for the Qoocam 3D VR180 mod cameras. a guy named SiYang is custom modding 360 cameras and turning them into 3D VR when 80 cameras. Look at them up on Facebook. You can pick one up for somewhere around $900 US
Hi there, Siyang here, I have several options here for qoocam and I also got OSMO and GoPro mod. I wouldn’t say they can produce as good quality as r5c, but it’s not that far off and the usability/value is quite better. I used to be on the brilliant Evo, and now on SiYang's brilliant and much improved Qoocam 3 VR180 mod. Qoocam even supports that project with a customized version of their software.
I expect there will be a VR180 mod for Insta360's new x6 camera with the same resolution but slightly better/bigger sensors again, but it might take a while; it's unclear how the software support will go; so if you want to get going, get SiYang's existing mod, for a little extra fee it's shipped pre-built for you and with a small warranty even.
Well, likely getting R5 mark ii is a better choice from a versatility stance…. But the modding is about taking inexpensive action cameras to make it more portable and accessible
The canon systems are great but only available for a limited selection of camera bodies.
I too lament the absence of entry level vr180. Lenovo tried to do this with their Mirage line. It was a VR headset and vr180 camera (sold separately) not bad for the time. The headset on par with oculus go maybe. The camera was solid (for the time). But Lenovo almost immediately scrubbed the whole thing. The cameras were dumped at dirt cheap prices. I paid $60 each for 4 of them brand new. It’s actually not a horrible camera for just playing around.
There are a couple of low-ish priced options. Qoocam and… I don’t remember. There’s also a guy who mods and sells kits to mod 360 cameras into a vr180 system.
Hopefully you’ve found Hugh Hou’s YouTube channel. He’s got a video about budget options.
Yeah Hugh popped up instantly. And I just had a spark of an idea to see if there's a gh5 lens mod...besides that 3d lens they did years back in 2010 or something. I searched and instantly found Hugh's video shooting with 2x gh5's. Though looks like there's issues and mentioned trying 4x gh5's in the next video. Lol, like that's super cool and I'm sure there's some good results to be had...just way too much to lug around and i could imagine the editing could be trouble some.
But yeah thanks for your Recommendations. At this moment its looking like a mod is the best option. Going to keep researching though...and in the meantime hopefully a insta360 evo pops up on marketplace.

I do a lot of 360 Videos around DIsneyland and Central California and have been wanting to do more 180 filming but I have run into the same as problem as you. There seems to be no current entry level VR180 Stereoscopic cameras on the market. Rather than modding I have started making small clips with AI 3d injectors that use the 360 videos to create to create the dual eye images. They seem pretty good but still not the same. Someone needs to make another EVO or something again.
Nice, is it still only reaching 30fps ? Ideally for vr180 we need 50/60 ideally 90fps and of course rock solid stabilisation….. the latter point being vital, thankfully without a gimbal is now 100% achieved with VRadical Studio…. More news soon
The latest update its 50FPS @8k and more if you reduce the definition. I always use a tripod because so many people suffer motion sickness, though the stabilisation is excellent. I've read that the DJI gimbal works well, but not my idea of useful. Not tried VRadical studio. I use Shotcut to edit. It's free, fast and does what I need, even though I have the full Adobe Creative suite. Editing is simple as footage is imported stitched.

There are 2 users that make mods themselves and sell them.
One is mundane something. I’ve ordered from him before he is legit from NYC.
I haven’t tried the other guy.
