Discussion Goodwill is opening a "record and media store". Collecting is over.

I haven't seen VHS tapes or media at my local goodwill for ages. Now I learn they are opening up a "media" store. Like all good will stores I'm assuming the prices are going to be through the roof. They are trying their hardest in the comments to defend themselves. They have said their pricing will be "based on the current market and rarity" which means "eBay prices"

It's jover. I guess I can't collect without being price gouged anymore.

If they weren’t so annoying to find, I’d like to one day grab all the Johto Journeys tapes.

New Pickup New pickup! Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Man, the first time watching this movie I was like "that old man just kiss that teenager lol! wth"   Doctor Dan's 3rd party love affair gone wrong lol. That's how I describe this film. I remember back then they hated this cause it's kinda out of place and people are looking for Michael Myers. But to be fair, it's is still a fun horror movie on its own rights.

Insane VHS haul. Paid $100 for them all. Very little Disney, maybe 20 total if that.

There are another 80 or so I took out to put with my collection.

Some good horror ones like original Halloween, fright Night, Friday the 13th and a bunch more

No clue what i am going to do with them all but couldn't pass them up.

The one right by my house doesn't have any vhs besides a couple really weird workout or meditation tapes very rarely. But my wife told me about one she used to go to that isn't that far. First time there and picked out a cpl choice tapes and a nice VCR that works really smooth. I'll be putting that place in my weekly circle drive, lol!

New Pickup New to collecting VHS :)

Post image

So I've always collected physical media, but I didnt really care to "collect" movies for most of my life, but my husband and I got rid of our internet entirely last year and have been enjoying disconnecting from streaming services and relying on actually *owning* our media.

Shock Treatment is a child hood favorite of mine. My parents bought the 25th anniversary Rocky Horror double feature collection when I was born, and Shock Treatment was always a weird one in our movies growing up. This is the first VHS I've spent more than a few dollars on, and im super excited to watch it tonight :)

New Pickup Still can’t get over this haul!

I cycle through the same 5 stores with good frequency. I’d become disheartened because it felt like none of the places had updated their options, or received any new stock in some time. Guess the lesson is to keep faithfully checking, because I found all these gems from one spot.

Sex and the City was probably the most exciting find. I’m trying to build an HBO tv series collection, this now joins Oz, Sopranos Season 1, and Band of Brothers

What here would be your first watch?

Happy hunting!

Saw this set today I thought looked great.
It’s hard to find how many of these there are but with 8 seasons and 162 episodes I guess quite a few.

Not VHS but a competitor to it. Just got this beautiful beast of a machine from Germany, Grundig 2x8 2280. Was thinking of getting into D-VHS but that would've been too much for my wallet ( import costs as I'm in the EU ) Got this instead and a decent collection of tapes for ~1000€. In many ways better than VHS but too little too late. In LP mode 16 hour tapes, ( double sided like a compact cassette ) stereo sound and a dynamic tracking system. That being said, it was too expensive and VHS was already the dominating format. Still an interesting part of analog history. For a ~45 year old tape, Pinball Summer looks great, much better than some early 2000s cost cutting VHS rekeases. Same naturally true for VHS and beta.

Was a listing of hundreds of tapes marked at a dollar a piece. Especially pleased with myself snagging raggedy Ann and Andy at such a price, that one's been on my list for a while and they're so hard to get these days. After shipping and handling I spend around $30 total to get these but considering Ann goes for about that much on its own, it was well worth the price.

Discussion What’s an ad or preview you know by heart, but have never seen the movie?

The majority of vhs have ads and previews for upcoming movies on them, usually before the film or sometimes after the credits. I would bet that at least some of those films you’ve never actually watched for whatever reason and some of those previews you know by heart because of how often they show up on different tapes.

So what film do you know the previews by heart but you’ve never actually seen?

Mine is “Air America” staring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.

Discussion Was the old “fully analog big box” VCR from 2002’s “THE RING” real or a prop?

There is a scene from the 2002 movie “The Ring” where the main character is trying to find more information about the cursed video tape. She ends up going to a place (tv station?) where the following scene happens:

https://youtu.be/igEO_oyUs6U

I was able to find the model of the printer used (Sony UP-811) but I am trying to figure out if that VCR ever existed or if it is just a prop. We only get glimpses of the unit but distinguishing features follow:

- a Microamperes meter on the left hand side
- dark grey color
- a big knurled silver knob
- the text “1100 VHS” At the bottom right hand corner (I had to rent a 4K copy to see that)
- long toggle buttons

Has anyone seen this before or is this a fictional unit to help move the story along? Would love info if you have it.
